Video games giant Nintendo is returning to this year's Nuremburg Spielwarenmesse after a four year absence.
Despite the shortage of space on the Nurnberg fair site, Nintendo will have a major presence in the 500 square-metre Paris hall in CCN West.
Dr. Bernd Fakesch, general manager of Nintendo Germany explained the firm's decision to return: “Our new home console Wii, which has been on the market since December 2006, is intended more for people beyond the classic video game target groups, such as older adults. The International Toy Fair is also increasingly aiming at these people in 2007. Nintendo’s presence in Nurnberg therefore fits in perfectly with our strategy, which is aimed at extending the market.”
Ernst Kick, CEO of Spielwarenmesse, says Nintendo’s decision is longterm confirmation of the concept of the International Toy Fair: “The participation of such an innovative company makes it clear that we have touched the pulse of the times with our arrangement of the contents of the International Toy Fair and the special Toy Generations show in hall 9. The Nintendo commitment opens up an exceptional opportunity for the national and international toy trade to successfully develop new target groups with an attractive range of products. We assume that the trade will recognize and specifically seize this chance.”

During our patrol of the CES 2007 showfloor, which stretched onward for what seemed like miles, we came across several examples of studios using Nintendo's new generation console as a means to attract people to their booths. And it worked like a charm every time. IBM had a Wii on display and a copy of Wii Sports in the back of its showfloor presence. Dolby did, too.
Dolby had a number of new audio technologies to preview at the electronics event, but it was trumpeting an oldie but goodie, Dolby Pro Logic II, to spotlight Wii. Passersby could not resist the temptation and continually streamed in to watch and play Wii Sports.

A local Texas news station is warning parents that a broadband-connected Nintendo Wii can be a "porn gateway." "It's very upsetting something this popular—a kid game—can go that direction so quickly," says one parent. Some adult websites have tailored their content to be viewable on the Wii Opera browser, which apparently has some parents up in arms.
Of course, the reporter fails to mention how the parental controls allow parents to either disable browsing completely or restrict which "channels" kids can browse. They also apparently didn't know the porn industry is adapting to the Wii because the console is used by adults, who have every right to view boobies in between bouts of Zelda. "We need to keep them protected from people who want to invade a fun game like the Wii," proclaims one parent. Indeed.

Okay, before y'all fall over yourselves telling us that he's using a special cartridge allowing him to pipe in a video signal to his Game Boy Advance, let us beat you to the punch -- we know that. It still looks pretty cool playing the Wii on a GBA screen. Though why you would even want to do this is an entirely different matter. Also, just forget about that sucker being portable. For now, it's just a nifty little "Gee whiz!" feature that'll make you pine for a Wii Boy Portable one day. We can dream.
Peep the vid after the jump and imagine everything else you can play on that tiny screen, thus destroying your eyesight and/or going blind. You've been warned.

Who needs a Wii when you have friends that are willing to make asses of themselves? That seems to be the message of this video, in which a depressed would-be Wii owner uses a TV remote to "control" real life versions of Tennis, Golf and other games. We especially like the scene where our hero controls Punch-Out! on the NES by jumping around and calling out "left" and "right" to guide a friend holding an actual NES controller. How's that for intuitive controls?
While the video is hilarious, it's also a good reminder that playing the Wii is no substitute for real life activity. Why not put down that copy of Zelda and pick up a friend for a fake sword duel. If you're tired of Wii Tennis, why not go out and, y'know, actually play some tennis. There's a great big world out there just waiting for you to make an ass of yourself, so go play.

Newsweek's N'Gai Croal pinged us with his take on how the iPhone will shake things up. He blogs:
The iPhone isn't a direct challenger to Sony's portable gaming ambitions--that would be the wildly popular Nintendo DS--but it most certainly is a threat to Sony's mobile media and communication ambitions. After all, the iPod has iTunes (with music, movies, TV and games); while the PSP has the Playstation Network (for PS2 games that can run on the PSP's emulator and...nothing else right now--more than two years after its launch.)
But what about the DS? Croal says:
The iPhone won't stop the DS from selling like ice on a hot summer day, but it could cause a lot of casual DS owners to put it in a sock drawer and forget about it. But for now, it looks like the only thing that's being shaken up is Apple as the company gets entangled in a legal dispute over trademark infringement. Portable gaming, for now you are safe!
For more about the Iphone check out our Apple News Site.

If you thought making dinner in real life was a blast, wait 'til you see what you can do on a console. Publisher Majesco is bringing Cooking Mama: Cook Off to Wii later this year and we have a healthy dose of new screens to serve.
Game designers are determined to use the Wii-mote to mimic just about every bodily motion or mundane activity we partake in on a daily basis and turning it into big fun - and Cooking Mama looks to be no different.
Rather than being a 'Wii-make' like the Trauma Center port from DS, Cook Off was built from the ground up to satisfy multiple cooks in the kitchen. For the Wii version, you'll hold the Wii-mote in different yet completely natural ways to slice, chop, grate and stir your meals to make everything from international dishes to desserts.
Also new to Cook Off is a Cooking Challenge mode which pits you and a friend against each other, letting you satisfy your MasterChef desires in your living room

Gunpey, the puzzle-music game on PSP and DS, has been picked up by Atari which will publish the game in Europe in March.
The colourful puzzle game has players flip rising panels, lining up the markings within the panels to make them explode before they reach the top of the screen. Confused? Check out the DS and PSP screens below.
Both games feature wireless link-up for multiplayer gaming, and platform-exclusive content includes 40 interchangeable skins for the PSP version, while the DS version boasts extra special moves that temporarily disrupt your opponent's screen in versus games, and the option to create your own music.

Extended versions of The Godfather game previously released on Xbox, Xbox 360 and PS are on their way to the Wii and PS3, with extra content and enhanced controls.
The Godfather The Don's Edition is the name of the version coming to PS3 whilst the Wii game will be titled, The Godfather Blackhand Edition.
Both games will feature new missions, new ways to find dirty cops for your dodgy deals, and the added ability to follow the path of either an Enforcer or Operator, offering you different "perks and abilities".
The Don's Edition on PS3 will also have new Shipyard and Rail yard transportation hubs which will presumably increase mobility throughout the city, whilst the Blackhand Edition on Wii will have you swinging the Remote and Nunchuk to fight, and pointing the Remote like a gun to shoot your enemies.
The already-released Godfather game is a decent urban-gangster romp and, even though it's been out for a while already, with the new features added these versions, they could be well worth a look for Wii and PS3 owners this spring.
Both games are due in March in the US, and presumably shortly after in UK.

Game controller technology is a major factor in the development of videogaming, reckons id Software's John Carmack.
"For years, I've been saying ... how IO [input/output] devices are where the really big differences are going to be made in gaming," Carmack said in an interview with Game Informer, when asked about game development for Wii.
"You can get ten times the graphics power, and you can make a prettier picture, but when somebody makes a new IO device that really changes the way that people interact with the game, that's going to have a larger benefit there.
"So I'm really pleased with what they're (Nintendo) doing with the Wii and with the DS-and they're doing innovative things," he added.
But don't get too excited, Wii fans, because there seems to be no chance of Quake coming to Wii: "But our current generation of game technology is not targeted at the Wii. Maybe that was a mistake on our part originally, but we have been looking strictly at the 360, PS3 and PC as what we want to simultaneously develop on. We probably aren't going to be able to hit the Wii with the same technology platform."
Carmack also revealed a keen interest in taking Wolfenstein to the big screen: "One of the things we're working on now, although the rights are currently all back with us, with Wolfenstein in development there's interest in a Wolfenstein movie."
Let's hope it turns out better than the Doom movie.

After months of almost worrying silence from Nibris since announcing the game Sadness for Wii, the developer has has finally open piped up with firm details about Sadness and word that it is working on a further two games for Nintendo systems.
According to cubed3.com, Nibris has confirmed a Wii version of Raid over the River, an up-scrolling shooter previously announced for DS. The two versions will apparently link with each other, presumably using the wi-fi capabilities of the Wii and DS consoles, although Nibris is keeping tight-lipped on what features this will offer.
According to the site, Nibris is also working on a new shooter-come-puzzle game for DS called Double Bloob, in which players have to destroy different coloured Bloobs (we like bloobs).
Although Cubed3 says both the Wii and DS versions of Raid over the Moon will strangely "launch Q3 2008", last word from Nibris suggested an early 2007 release for the DS version.
Release dates for Double Bloob and Sadness remain to be confirmed, but CVG has contacted Nibris regarding the matter and awaits a reply. Lets hope they don't go AWOL for another six months.
