Japan's NTT Docomo unveiled a horde of new handsets, including this white dual screen clamshell from Mitsubishi. Jumping on the "Touching is Good" bandwagon, the bottom screen is a *surprise* touch screen (sound familiar?). With The Land of the Rising Sun gobbling DS Lites as soon as they hit store shelves, can't blame Mitsubishi for skiing in Nintendo's wake. What else, the cellie's a FOMA branded mobile, which means that it definitely doubles as a video phone as well, but probably not a music player. And the name of this product? Why, it's the D800iDS.

Seems lately the only time we post something about the Germans is when something bad goes down. So in the interests of parity, here's some more light-hearted news from the Fatherland: they like the DS. A lot.
The DS sold 500,000 units in 2005, which was alright, but in 2006 they sold a further 1,000,000, which is better. Combined with the GBA that has Nintendo owning 80% of the German handheld market (what, no Gizmondo love, Germany?).
Probably most interesting, though, is the claim by Nintendo (so take some salt with it) that 44% of German DS owners are female. That's staggering.

A reliable tipster says Best Buy plans to unleash at least 15 Nintendo Wii consoles at each of its brick-and-mortar locations on Sunday, January 21. Word has it there may even be from 35 to 45 consoles for sale at each location. However, when we contacted a Best Buy store manager in the area, he had no knowledge of any such shipment forthcoming, but said it certainly was a possibility since he'd received plenty of PS3 shipments lately but "no Nintendo Wii units in a long time."
Will Wii fanboys line up outside Best Buy stores coast-to-coast in hopes of scoring their favorite gaming console this Sunday morning? Maybe where you are, but here the Midwest, where temperatures are expected to be in the single digits on Saturday night, it seems unlikely. Around here, the Best Buy stores open at 11am on Sunday morning, so that would be a really long night.

Consumers looking to buy a PlayStation 3 in the US have multiple outlets to choose from, as over 50 per cent of all stores surveyed have units in stock.
Compared to the Nintendo Wii, which is in short supply in all regions across the globe, the PS3 is readily available in specialist and electrical retailers across North America, where Sony recently announced it had shipped a total of one million units.
"Our channel checks yesterday of 52 retail stores, from boutiques to big-box retailers, showed that 28 of the 52 stores had PS3 consoles in stock, while none had Wii consoles in stock," said PJ McNealy of American Technology Research.
While some have suggested the amount of stock available may be indication of slowing demand, Sony's David Karraker disputes the idea, instead pointing out that the company is doing such a good job of supplying retailers with available units.
"It isn't because demand has weakend, it is because we have kept the supply pipeline moving," Karraker told Reuters.
New hardware traditionally suffers from short supply at retail, as the demand from early-adopting consumers is fulfilled.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 came under increased pressure from retail following its launch in 2005, with supplies limited through the first quarter of 2006.
Despite the amount of PS3 units on store shelves, PJ McNealy pointed out that high levels of stock didn't not neccesarily indicate slow demand.

As the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia prepares to release 2006 software and hardware figures, Sony and Nintendo have both announced strong sales in the territory.
According to Sony, more than 2.2 million PS2 units have now been sold in Australia. During the fourth quarter of 2006, PS2 accounted for 56 per cent of all home console sales and 71 per cent of home console software sales.
In the same period, combined PS2 and PSP sales accounted for 42 per cent of all consoles purchased.
But the DS was the best-selling console of 2006, according to GfK Australia figures quoted by Nintendo. The Wii is also said to be performing well, with 50,000 units shifted in the three weeks following the console's launch on December 7.
Microsoft Australia has yet to release a statement regarding 2006 Xbox 360 sales. However, the console got off to a strong start when it launched in March, with 30,000 units sold in just four days.
IEAA is set to release full sales figures by the end of the week.

Despite growing speculation (and belief) that Driver: Parallel Lines is currently in devlopment for Wii, Ubisoft remains defyant in our plees to confirm its existence.
Rumours of the Wii port surfaced when it appeared in what internet reports claimed to be a leaked Ubisoft release list.
The then unheard of Cosmic Family, which also appeared on the same list, was officially announced yesterday, lending weight to the list's accuracy.
CVG contacted a Ubisoft correspondent today regarding the matter, and although they declined to confirm the rumour, they did say we can "expect Ubisoft to make announcements later this month."
With EA's Godfather confirmed to be Wii-bound, it seems there'll be no lack of urban gangster games on Nintendo's new console.

a small number of gamers playing the latest of Link's epic adventures, Twilight Princess on Wii, have encountered a glitch that permanently blocks their way forward, essentially forcing them to start again.
According to one forum post, it would appear that saving your progress at a specific point in the game (look away if you're avoiding spoilers) - right after thawing out the frozen Zora's domain - activates the glitch which prevents a subsequent cutscene, in which a new path is opened, from being triggered.
This prevents the player from being able to reach their next objective, and because this glitch occurs after saving your progress, your save file is essentially rendered useless. Those without an alternative save file are forced to start again.
If you've come across this, or any other glitch in Zelda, let us know in the Comments section below.

KDND 107.9, The US radio station whose 'Hold your wee for a Wii' contest led to the death of a mother of three, has fired 10 staff involved - including five on-air personalities - after reports suggest that they made jokes after listeners expressed concerns over water intoxication on air.
According to The Sacramento Bee, one listener had phoned it to point out the danger only to be told that the station was "aware" of it, while another host joked that contestants had signed a release, "so we're not responsible".
"We got a guy who's just about to die," a reporter with the contestents said. "Make sure he signs the release," the radio host replied.
Of course the banter eventually took a bitter irony as 28-year-old Jenifer Strange complained of a headache and was later found dead in her home in Sacramento California - the cause of death found to be water intoxication.
But despite the distasteful nature of the contest local sheriffs said that there are no grounds for a criminal investigation: "It's not as if she was somehow in their custody and they had a role to care for her. Rather, it was an invitation to a contest that was clearly ill- advised. She was exercising her free will," Sacramento County Sheriff John McGinness told the Bee. "If there's anything to suggest a criminal act by anyone involved in this, we'd pick it up and run with it."

These little DS ripoff keychains are called Revolve Games (or RG for short) and claim to have 26 different games, with each game having 99 levels, although games L-Z all seem to be variations on Tetris - excuse me, I mean Block Game. It also includes such compelling titles as Pinball, Double Pinball, Frog Game, Formula, and Tank Fighting. They also come in 8 colors, but are randomly packaged. From the pictures, it appears the top "screen" is actually just a mirror, and all gaming takes place on the bottom screen. Oh, and it uses watch batteries that you can change yourself, too. Only $6.20 USD. Gotta love that Engrish, though.

One of the biggest sellers for the Japanese DS late last year was Sega's Oshare Majo Love and Berry, a port of a girls oriented arcade card game. In order to replicate the arcade version, the DS version came bundled with a card reader device that plugged into the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot on the DS. The Oshare Magic Cards from the arcade version could then be used both for the DS and arcade versions of the game.
Today's news concerns those who love their Love and Berry but aren't interested in playing the arcade version. Starting 1/24, Sega Japan will begin selling the Oshare Majo Love and Berry Official Card Packs. Pricing is set at 210 yen for a pack of three cards. These cards can be used both with the arcade and DS versions of the game.
Included in the official set are 39 card types, selected from the various arcade card collections that have been released so far. On top of that are 31 rare cards and 8 super rare cards, totaling 78 card types, included at random.

Developer Nibris has announced it is working on a new DS title called Double Bloob, an arcade action game that appears to play similarly to the Capcom classic Buster Bros. Bloob's action takes place on one playing field with the player at the bottom and multi-colored blobs dropping from above. The player uses a harpoon to pop the Bloobs, which split into two globs until they are a small enough size to be completely destroyed.
As for your motivation, Double Bloob tells the story of a brother and sister team, Aen and Niua, who are out to save their dolphin friend Pongo. Pongo has been kidnapped by the Great Nasty Bloob. You will set out across 100 levels to rescue your friend, popping blobs and collecting bonuses along the way. Bonuses include dual-shot, a freeze item which stops the blobs for a few seconds, and a shield which makes the player invincible.
There are also antibonuses, though, including slowdown (slows player's movement), no shot (blocks player's ability to shoot for a moment), and antipoint (subtracts points from player's score).
As you destroy blobs you'll charge your super attack, which fires five harpoons at once. Shooting two bloobs within a second gives you double points.
Bloobs come with a variety of skills such as vanishing bloobs (which disappear periodically), sticky bloobs (which can combine to form bigger globs), and rock bloobs (made of a harder material and more difficult to destroy).
Double Bloob is being developed by Nibris, the Nintendo loyalists also working on Raid Over the River for the DS and Sadness for the Wii. Look for the Bloobs to drop in Q2 2007.

Publisher Ubisoft today announced that it is underway with a new property for Nintendo's Wii console. The game, called Cosmic Family, is a "space adventure geared toward young children," according to the company. It's being developed by Ubisoft's Barcelona studio and will ship around the world later this year.
"Cosmic Family is a great title for young Wii players and their families, with simple point-and-click controls that will be easy to learn and provide the freedom to navigate wherever players choose to go," said Tony Key, vice president of marketing at Ubisoft. "Families will enjoy playing this game together, as it unfolds more like an interactive adventure than a traditional video game."
In Cosmic Family, players interact with Mom and Dad Cosmic, as well as Big Sister, two small children, a dog, a cat, and a variety of monsters. The title throws a series of mini-games - more than 15 spread out across the five floors of the rocket house - at gamers. Minis include everything from piloting a rocket ship to brushing a monster's teeth, dressing up characters and nurturing plants. The selection of minis will undoubtedly make full use of the Wii remote. Ubisoft believes that Cosmic Family will "improve children's memory, hand-eye coordination, creativity and imagination."

Today Namco Bandai announced that Tamagotchi: Party On! for the Wii will be coming to North America this Spring. Party On! is a port of the Japanese launch title Tamagotchi Pika Pika Daitouryou, or Tamagotchi's Sparklilng President. The party game set in the Tamagotchi universe supports up to four players in a race to become the most popular Tamagotchi on Tamagotchi Planet.
"Tamagotchi Party On! is a seamless blend of both party game and board game as players swing, shake, and turn their Wii controllers in order to control their favorite Tamagotchi," said Naruo Uchida, Namco Bandai's Vice President of Localization. "It's the wackiest and cutest popularity contest ever as up-to-four players compete in fun mini-games to become the president of Tamagotchi planet."
Party On! allows players to choose their favorite virtual pet and either challenge their friends or go solo in over 15 mini-games that include shaking hands, finding lost children, and testing your public speaking skills. In order to win the election, players will have to call upon every politician's favorite political tool: the Wiimote.
Gamers can also use Gotchi points that they earn along the way to level up their characters and customize their campaign headquarters. With over six towns to win over and loads of popularity points to be earned, Tamagotchi Party On! hopes to inject some fun into politics. In Namco Bandai's own words: "Be happy! Be popular! Be president!"

With this new barrage of Sim City DS images comes a nifty piece of information -- players will be able to trade certain city elements over WiFi. That does add an interesting spin to portable city building, and we can't wait to hear more about it. In the meantime, however, screens!
