Nintendo of Canada is raffling off six hand painted Wiis by Canadian artists. Why does Nintendo of Canada get all the cool contests? The last cool thing Nintendo of America ever did was the Dragon Warrior giveaway with Nintendo Power back in the day. Yeah, we just brought up some old-school stuff there!
To win such an artistic Wii you must be a citizen of Canada and a member of their My Nintendo club -- oh, and you have to be over 13 years old. Winners will be announced on or around May 9. The Wii certainly lends itself to some artistic reinterpretation. Although painting your Wii would probably void any warranty

With the Wii's focus on controls, how does a franchise like SSX handle the transition? Snowboarding -- and Wii-only SSX Blur -- lacks a direct relation to the Wii's motion sensitivity, but the game still translates to hand movements. The steering mechanic, which relies on Nunchuk twists, fits well; it even seems like it had always been a part of SSX.
The tricks, however, are mixed; simple remote flicks feel like a gimmick, while drawing shapes for Ubertricks only works some of the time. Overall, the controls work well enough to keep me playing, but I sometimes stop in frustration after consecutive, unrecognized moves.
As far as graphics, sound, and other review standards, those all hold up in Blur, but aren't my focus in this analysis. (Look up scored reviews for other opinions.) Instead, I'll further explain how Blur translates a thumbstick-and-button game into a tilt-and-flail experience.
I've been playing Blur since its release, unlocking all of the runs and many of the game's extra features. The steering controls feel natural; I just gently roll the Nunchuk to turn and push the thumbstick for a little extra movement. Blur lets users change the balance between the thumbstick and motion controls from being even to turning one up all the way and the other off. I ticked the default up slightly, emphasizing the motion while reducing the thumbstick.
Unlike basic steering, the tricks feel more detached from the game. Players flick the Remote in different directions to flip or twist. However, I often feel like I'm swinging the WIi Remote randomly for these basic moves; Remote flailing may be the successor to button mashing.
The precise Ubertricks -- which require drawing certain shapes with just the Remote or both controllers together -- sometimes work well and sometimes don't. I like the challenge of drawing hearts and loops in the air because it feels like an accomplishment when performed properly. (People who don't like drawing hearts in the air might as well eat kittens.) These shapes are far from the random flailing sense of normal flips and spins.
But even after many hours with the game, the Ubertrick recognition still feels too loose. Sometimes, I can't do a single trick after many successive attempts. Thankfully, Blur lets players practice these finicky tricks whenever paused, so I can re-learn them even in the middle of a run. Other times, the game credits me for a different Ubertrick that has similar shapes as the one I'm trying to perform. Maybe it thinks I'm close enough, and it wants to keep encouraging my spastic gestures.
Blur's gesture recognition is usually close, but it has enough disparity between my motions and its response to sometimes be frustrating. I still have fun playing Blur -- the physicality of the Wii complements action sports -- but it's a game I recommend with caveats. Hopefully the gesture recognition will be tuned in future games and isn't a hardware limitation of the Wii.

As of writing, there's still a few hours to go until the day that pranksters worldwide like to call their own. Unfortunately that doesn't mean we get to escape from the droll task of reporting on outlandish and suspect game console rumors. This latest one is the most unlikely example we've seen for a while and it's not just the claimed features that stir our suspicions. The premise of the "Wii-volution" rumor is that Nintendo is on the verge of releasing a version of the Wii with an HDMI port and a 160GB Hard Disk Drive integrated into the base of the console. The evidence is an extremely pixelated and blurry photo which points to something on the panel of a black Wii. We're just speculating here, but we think that model could potentially be a developer's kit. And with that, we already feel stupid for in any way taking this kind of half hearted rumor seriously. Hopefully, tomorrow's efforts will be a lot more convincing.
Update: Not that we needed to tell you this, but the original source of the image suggests that this is definitely fake.

French gaming site Jeux-France has posted scans from the Portuguese magazine Maxi Consolas, featuring exclusive images from the soon to be announced NiGHTS game for the Nintendo Wii that has fans of the original peeing themselves in delight. In order to understand the article I contacted Kotaku's French correspondent, Google Language tools. Google?
Sega reveals finally the first images of NiGHTS Wii envisaged exclusively on Wii in the Portuguese magazine Maxi Comforted. This new opus of the series seems to preserve the same graphic style that the original play, one notes the graphics very coloured with many effects. Playable to 2 players, NiGHTS Wii was to propose an on-line mode, new characters, and new movements with Wiimote. The official advertisement of Sega should take place at the beginning of April, we will thus be entitled to more details on this play in a few days.
I had been keeping my fingers crossed for very coloured graphics with many effects. I'm also glad they are including new Wiimote movements, as the old ones were just...not in existence. They've got three full scanned pages over there, plus a kind of joie de vivre you just don't find at English-speaking gaming sites.

Typically, parents generally can't be bothered to exert more effort beyond sweeping a dozen artery clogging, obesity causing Lunchables into their shopping cart every two weeks then slapping them into Chubby Timmy's backpack. When I was in elementary school, I set the packed lunch bar low, only hoping for an PB&J sandwich that hadn't been flattened by a Red Delicious and praying that the bananas were some shade of yellow.
However, this Japanese mom goes to extreme lengths to keep her children interested in their food, creating gorgeously handcrafted lunchbox creations, most of them loaded with Nintendo character references. From Super Mario Bros. to Animal Crossing to Mario Kart, these food creations look too good to eat. Not that I'm a fan of carved Vienna sausages and boiled fish paste mind you, just that the craftsmanship is out of this world.

After teases from both Official Nintendo Magazine and European publication Game Reactor, a third gaming rag Maxi Consolas has beaten both mags to the world exclusive unveiling of NiGHTS Wii. Yes ladies and gents - it's real!
Over the four page preview Maxi Consolas provides the first screens and details on the long, long awaited sequel - and it is indeed looking very much how you'd expect (and hope) NiGHTS to look, with plenty of purples and pinks on the colour palette.
The Sonic Team-developed sequel is nameless at this point and according to the mag will be officially announced by Sega in "early April".
Nightopia will again be revisited with more human characters, enemies and bosses to battle, along with a plethora of new tricks and freedom of movement thanks to the Wii Remote.
Interestingly, there's also a two-player mode planned for the game along with "some online functions", though at this point it seems more likely to be the integration of WiiConnect24 rather than full-on online play.
So there you go then, an official NiGHTS sequel after 10 whole years. Expect the official announcement in the next few days - hopefully along with the first screens and media. Here's hoping it lives up to our expectations, eh?

While you've undoubtedly gotten your fair share of "multi-console" info on THQ's SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 yesterday in our exclusive interview, the brief chat we had with THQ reps was - while very informative - not too DS-friendly. New details emerged regarding the main career mode, the amount of effort going into the pure realism in this year's brawler, but tasty bits of info for pocket fans was left for another day. Apparently that day came sooner than we thought though, as THQ has revealed a few new details on the DS version today in the Grand Ballroom of the Atheneum Suite Hotel here in Detroit.

Tecmo gathered members of the press in Tokyo today to formally announce its upcoming lineup for the DS and PS3. While the focus of the event, at least as far as the television cameras were concerned, was on the first title, a new DS adventure game called DS Nishimura Kyotaro Suspense (we'll have details shortly), gamers everywhere are probably more interested in what came after -- a first look at Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword!
In case you haven't been checking IGNDS daily like a good little ninja, here's a brief update. Tecmo finally unveiled Team Ninja's top-secret DS project to the world this past week, and in the shocker of all shockers, it's a new entry in the Ninja Gaiden series. And a 3D entry, no less! To recap our initial preview, the game is meant to be played almost entirely with the stylus, with players tapping and slashing the screen to guide Hayabusa, shoot shurikens and slice up enemies.
Producer Tomonobu Itagaki was at the press conference, and as one would expect, he let the game do most of the talking through a live demonstration of a single level of play. This level started outdoors. After taking out a few enemies, Itagaki proceeded in-doors for a few more fights before facing off against a giant spider-like boss.

Nintendo Japan has announced its Virtual Console lineup for April, and there seems to be enough material to restart classic system wars. PC Engine fans can look forward to more Bonk, his late-life sidekick, Zonk, and Bloody Wolf. Sega fans can look forward to Rent a Hero. Nintendo fans? How do Punch Out, Ninja Gaiden, Final Fight and Star Fox 64 sound?
Here's what the April lineup looks like in its entirety.
FAMICOM
Punch Out (Nintendo, 500 points)
Elevator Action (Taito, 500)
Ninja Ryuukenden (aka Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo, 500)
Meikyuu Kumikyoku (aka Milon's Secret Castle, Hudson, 500)
Gradius 2 (Konami, 500)
SUPER FAMICOM
Hercules no Eikou III (Pione, 800)
Final Fight (Capcom, 800)
Kirby Bowl (Nintendo, 800)
NINTENDO 64
Star Fox 64 (Nintendo, 1000)
MEGA DRIVE
Rent A Hero (Sega, 600)
Puyo Puyo Tsu (Sega, 600)
Pulseman (Sega, 600)
Bahamut Senki (Sega, 600)
PC ENGINE
Final Soldier (Hudson, 600)
Narazumono Sentou Butai Bloody Wolf (G-Mode, 600)
PC Genjin 2 (aka Bonk's Revenge, Hudson, 600)
Kaizou Choujin Shubibiman 2 (aka Shockman, Hudson, 600)
Benki Gaiden (Sunsoft, 600)
PC Denjin (aka Air Zonk, Hudson, 600)
That's a whole lot of gaming in just one month. We'll close as always by offering the futile hope that most of these titles will make a quick trip to territories outside of Japan.

Latest News from the CnC DS Project:
There’s been a problem processing my new internet account so it’s going to be a little longer before I’m online which is rubbish. In the mean time here’s an update:
I’ve got some new GUI controls working including a tick box and a new ‘popup’ style GUI base class. Right now I have a popup colour chooser and a popup list control. Basically when you select that GUI item it displays a nearly full screen popup that lets you edit it. So normally with the list you see a single item, click it and the list of items appears you can choose from.
I’ve tied this in with the new WIP skirmish settings screen and you can now enter and leave a mission, though this is still unrefined but basically working. I haven’t done much checking for memory leaks but it’s looking pretty good so far.
Now the next part.. and I apologise because this is going to sound a pain to some people! I’ve started to put together all the editing tools (think map editor, unit editor and image convertor) for the game engine into a single C# application (yes it’s dot net). For those who remember I used to be doing this with Blitz but that has turned out to be a bad decision.. though it looked very pretty it was becoming very tedius to add to it. Now with the C# I can get loads of it done really quickly. I’ve been really impressed with how easy it is to do a lot of stuff. Though I don’t think I’d use this for a game for a PC tool its perfect.
I’ve started to lay the groundwork for some of the pretty graphics but I was relying on the net for this and so it’s going slowly

Grizzly Adams has released a new version of his Wii Menu Clone for the Nintendo DS:
Spread the Word
Its a clone of the Wii channels menu, on a smaller scale, with some artistic license taken. Right now its main purpose is to launch NDS files. Each program should have an 80x48 pcx icon in the qlshell/icons folder for it (not many icons have been made yet!) Soon I'll add a feature to load the icons from the same folder as the nds file, and also to load icons from within the nds file if all other attempts fail. I've got to recreate my source images for the skins because I recently had my primary hdd fail.
This should work for most cards, Don't bother reporting here that it works unless someone has already reported it doesn't. I'm interested in bug reports, so send away! Also, just so everyone knows, it doesn't have pen input yet.
Future plans:
Slot 1 / Slot 2 booting
Settings menu
Download channel (a separate app, usable on its own or together with DSChannels)
For now DSChannels only indexes nds files under the /Applications or /Apps folders on your card. You should be able to nest a level or two deep, but keep in mind that will increase scanning time at boot, and you cannot ever exceed the pathlimit of 255 characters (240 to be safe) including slashes and periods.

News from the Cyclowiz site:
The news are good today. First of all, we received two new Wii consoles for testing, one from Japan and one from Hong Kong. Both have the new drive revision that was spotted in Taiwan last week. Guess what, while the drive PCB is different, CycloWiz has been tested and is 100% compatible with the new boards ! Not only is it working as usual, but it is possible to install it using quick-solder method, as the alignement of the points didn't change. While CycloWiz works fine, this is not the case for some other mods for which a wire needs to be soldered directly to a chip's leg because they use an extra solder point that has now been removed.
We also added upgrade 3.0B to the download section. It's similar as 3.0 except that it's now compatible with D2B chipset. Users that already upgraded to 3.0 do not need to upgrade.
Make sure to read the Upgrade 3.0B README file before flashing your chip!

Not to be outdone by Capcom's Virtual Console plans revealed earlier this week, Hudson has announced five TurboGrafx-16 games coming to the the North American shopping channel this April: Battle Lode Runner, Bonk's Revenge, Bravoman, Dragon's Curse, and Shockman.
Bonk's Revenge builds upon the original adventure's headbutting formula, adding more complex levels and tightened graphics. Battle Lode Runner gets a similar visual upgrade from its Commodore 64 trappings, and it even features multiplayer action.
Dragon's Curse, or Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap in Japan, should be available to purchase by next Monday. Players will be able to take on the forms and powers of five different creatures in this side-scrolling RPG, questing to regain their original human body. Bravoman and Shockman sound like Mega Man spin-offs, and you wouldn't be too far off with that assumption! They're both action-platformers overloaded with robots and larger-than-life bosses.
All five of the Virtual Console games will be priced at 600 Wii points.
