With brain training games being old hat, Japan is craving for something new. Enter comedy training games. Ha. Developer Skip has created Arukime DS, a two to four player game. In fact, it's not possible to play the game alone! (Well, you can play it alone, but you'll need two DSes.) A question is posed, and the other players write funny or witty answers in a certain time limit. Gut busting responses are then selected, and the funniest ones get points in the form of cushions. Game is out in Japan mid-July. Sounds hilarious.

Apparantly it's quite difficult getting hold of total sales data for Virtual Console games (or at least that's their excuse), so for the Virtual Console Nintendo Power magazine have been breaking their regular sales charts up into specific platforms. In their June issue, they've listed the top 5-selling SNES games on the service (though there's a touch of confusion over whether it's just for February or for ALL TIME). Patchy listings and a lack of sales figures are hardly ideal, but we make do with what we got, and this is all we got.
1. Super Mario World
2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
3. Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
4. Super Castlevania IV
5. Donkey Kong Country

A while back I mentioned that Square-Enix was coming out with some "practical" games for the DS, and now the screenshots have surfaced for these gems of learning. World Walking series, Why Not Listen to Classical Music on DS?, and Flower Blooming DS: Gardening Life are set to come out, with Flower Blooming with the only semi-confirmed release in Q3 of 2007. These throwbacks to the Nintendo Touch Generation games will unfortunately be released in Japanese, which is predictable, but I often wonder why the only similar game that has been released in English has Brain Age. Not that it is norm, but I know people of my parents' generation who have picked up DSs of their own because they saw it in Costco and now are at a loss for finding other learning games. And, besides going to Costco, their hobbies happen to include travel, gardening, and listening to classical music. I see a market, folks! Let's turn these bad boys into English.

Via GameSetWatch, a link to the official blog for the animated film Castlevania: Dracula's Curse. The story for the film is being written by the iconic Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Planetary), and the blog has tidbits of information from the writer about what we can expect with the film. Encouragingly, the movie is very much not aimed at children, will probably be just the first of a planned trilogy, and is generally based around the story from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. From the GSW post:
"He explains, grinning: 'To make it work as a film, I had to introduce new backstory, and I went through five drafts of the premise and three of the full outline to get the material where [Koji Igarashi] wanted it. He remains absolutely passionate about Castlevania. After eight rewrites of pre-production material, I remain absolutely passionate about beating the crap out of [Igarashi] in a dark alleyway one day.'"

The ultimate pinball game is about to hit the Nintendo DS and this time it is set in the vivid and exciting sci-fi world of the Metroid franchise. In Metroid Prime Pinball players venture onto exciting Metroid Prime themed tables and take control of Samus Aran in her morph ball form. Whether you are a pinball or Metroid fan you can now enjoy classic pinball in the palm of your hand, all with a sci-fi twist as Metroid Prime Pinball launches itself across Europe on 22nd June 2007.
Inspired by the successful Metroid franchise, which has defined the action game genre for nearly twenty years, Metroid Prime Pinball allow players to experience a whole new pinball sensation, only on the innovative Nintendo DS. With tables spanning across the dual screens, players follow the pinball action whilst controlling numerous flippers to keep the ball in play. Metroid Prime Pinball also allows players to bend the rules and tilt the table using the innovative touch screen. To really make players feel part of the action, the game even comes with a free Rumble Pak, which will vibrate in time with bumps and explosions.
As player’s have come to expect from games in the Metroid series, Metroid Prime Pinball is jam packed full of secrets to uncover. Hitting certain points of a table will allow players to venture into one of many mini games featuring enemies from the Metorid Prime series. Here they must take on Shriekbats in Shriekbat Shootout, battle their way through Beetle Blast and overcome games like Triclops Terror in order to increase their score. Players can collect points and bonuses to improve their scores by defeating enemies, collecting items and guiding the ball into ‘hard-to-get-to’ areas of the table, all while keeping it safely above the flippers. Metroid Prime Pinball also features the all time classic pinball mini game – Multiball! Introducing three balls to the table at once, allowing players to earn jackpot points.
Metroid Prime Pinball features two exciting single player modes for players to experience, with stunning effects like rain environments and water reflections. In Multi Mission mode, players can unlock four bonus tables based on worlds from the franchise, such as Phendrana Drifts. Collecting artefacts and completing challenging objectives in the mode allows players to progress through the game’s tables and ultimately open the final level where the big enemy boss, Metroid Prime, awaits. Players can also select their favourite table and challenge the highest score in Single Mission mode.
If that isn’t enough of a challenge, Metroid Prime Pinball also allows players to compete with up to seven others simultaneously using Nintendo DS’s wireless capability in Wireless Mission mode, and all from just a single game card. Think you have the skills to take on and defeat your friends in a lightening-fast game of pinball? Well now you can prove it by setting a target score, which your friends must beat to take the glory.
Metroid Prime Pinball flips across Europe on the Nintendo DS on 22nd June 2007 for the estimated retail price of around €40 (£30 in the UK).

Legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has told Entertainment Weekly that he believes Twilight Princess didn't do well in Japan because there are fewer and fewer people interested in playing big RPGs.
When asked his opinion on why Zelda isn't doing well in Japan, Miyamoto replied, "Well, I think a lot of people who bought the Wii are not necessarily the types of people who are interested in playing that kind of game. And a lot of the people who would want to play it [due to chronic shortages of the console] can't find a Wii! But mostly, I think it's that there are fewer and fewer people who are interested in playing a big role-playing game like Zelda."
In the interview Miyamoto also expressed his wish to create a game that makes those darn kids respect their elders: "In Japan, there are a lot of trains that have sections reserved for the elderly or pregnant women. Young people in Japan sometimes sit in them, but if people come up and need them, you are supposed to get up. But most of the kids don't! It really upsets me. If I could build a game that somehow made the young people respect their elders...
"And there is another issue bugging me. In Japan there are a lot of people who freelance or work under the table - people who don't pay any taxes. I look at places in the world where people understand that paying taxes to the government helps society. In Japan there's not that understanding. So [social responsibility] is yet another issue I might address in a game. But I probably sound like an old man when I bring these things up."

We thought the 'Sports pack' range of Wii Remote extensions, which includes tennis racquet, golf club, and a steering wheel cases were about as crappy as it could get for Wii peripherals but we were wrong.
Chinese-based peripheral company, Firstsing, who was also responsible for the sports pack, has now released a USB-powered cooling fan which plugs into one of the Wii's USB ports and draws air from the vent at the back - where Nintendo has already positioned the built-in fan.
It is said to provide extra cooling for what we reckon is the one console that doesn't need any help in keeping itself cool, unless you live on the surface of the sun. What a pointless waste of money.

We're all hoping that Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles will be so much more than just another on-rails shooter, and the latest details in issue 17 of Official Nintendo Magazine UK gives us plenty of reasons to believe it going to be fantastic.
ONM points out that most of the game played in co-operation with another CPU-controller character, suggesting a two-player option in the final game.
Capcom, according to ONM, neither confirms nor denies the possibility of a two-player mode, but it would certainly need to be split-screen to retain the player's ability to move the camera around with the Nunchuk.
ONM also details some interesting nuggets on the controls. Highly destructible environments let you shoot out plates, chairs, candles, windows, drawers, clocks and more to reveal hidden items and guns. You then grab items by pointing at them and pressing A. Reloading is, oddly, done by shaking the Wii Remote.
Bigger guns don't only give you extra zombie-shredding power but also allow you to open up new paths, like shooting through wooden doors with the shotgun.
Playable characters include Chris, Jill, Carlos Oliveira, Rebecca Chambers, Billy Coen, Albert Wesker, Leon Kennedy and Clair Redfield. Different characters have their own special signature moves (like a roundhouse kick or a knife slash) that are activated by pointing at nearby enemies and pressing A.
You can read the full eight-page preview - which is part of a colossal 16-page Resident Evil feature - in issue 17 of the Official Nintendo Magazine UK, on sale May 11 for £3.99.

With the average second-hand copy of the GameCube version of Resident Evil 4 costing around £15, would you really want to pay £25 more for the motion controls of the Wii version? No? Capcom didn't think so either.
That's why the Capcom shop lists the Wii remake for the budget price of $29.95 over in the US. While this converts to around £15 we don't expect it to be any less that £20 over here.
So it's now about £5 for the new and improved controls. That's more like it.

The latest out of the internet rumour mill is that the latest Alone in the Dark game, currently announced for PS3, 360 and PC is also on its way to Wii.
Reports suggest this is one of eight games that Atari has in the making for Wii and DS. Other games include Tabulga 2, Lucky Luke, Cooking for DS, and Asterix Olympic Games and Fashion Academy for both DS and Wii.
According to DS-x2.com, these games were listed on the websites of "several European retailers", but fails to supply any links.
Atari is currently separating the truth from the bull, and will be getting back to CVG shortly.

Considering UK team Rare, developer of the seminal FPS GoldenEye 007, was sold to Microsoft from Nintendo and EA lost the Bond license to Activision recently, chances of the classic appearing on Virtual Console seemed slim-to-none.
But, when asked about the possibility of the James Bond shooter appearing on Nintendo's Virtual Console and/or Microsoft's XBLA, the answer given was "GoldenEye is caught up in a convoluted web of rights the likes of which would make the Weaver from Perdido Street Station jealous. That doesn't mean it won't happen, just that a lot of people with a lot of different perspectives are involved."
However, that answer hardly sheds any new light on what we already knew. Adding to this, a question was asked about other Rare games from Nintendo systems appearing on the Wii's retro service, and the response was:
"This is where we finally edge into territory that could see Scribes neutron bombed from management level. The only Rare-developed title on Virtual Console right now is the original Donkey Kong Country, and unofficially there's a strong likelihood that its sequels will follow. But the Donkey Kong series of games is a Nintendo-owned franchise starring an established Nintendo character, whereas something like Banjo isn't (and even Diddy Kong Racing is less clear-cut), so it's nowhere near as easy to call. Especially when you also consider the existence of Xbox Live Arcade. So right now, the best answer we can offer (for either download service) is 'it's possible'."
