Tuesday night at the Fox Studios lot in Los Angeles, Electronic Arts revealed the tentatively titled The Simpsons Game, a new action effort for just about every console, from PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to Wii and PlayStation 2. The game is developed internally by EA's studios and comes from talent that worked on preceding company hits, including Medal of Honor and Need for Speed. Running fewer than five minutes, EA spotlighted a very short demo of the project and pulled back the curtain on some of the play style and storyline details. Here's what we know so far:
The Simpsons Game has been in development for two years and features an original storyline penned by show writers Tim Long, Matt Selman and Matt Warburton. The title begins as the Simpsons discover that they have been forced to take part in another videogame, and the developer has used this premise as a setup to parody a variety of pop culture topics, including EA itself. Nobody and nothing will be safe, according to the title's producer, who readily admits that the company hired a team of lawyers solely to protect the potentially scandalous nature of the endeavor's subject matter. The Simpsons head writers conjured up a significant tale encapsulating some 53 minutes of spoken dialog -- approximately 8,000 lines -- delivered by all the major voice talent from the acclaimed television series.

With Wii news slowing down a bit in the last few days, the IGN Wii team decided to venture to our nearby local import shop and grab a few new titles to feed the Japanese Wii. Amongst the list of games were train simulators, mah-jong games, and a plethora of already-released US titles at a sweet markup. Brushing off the distracting Wii fodder in front of us, we rested our eyes on Eyeshield 21. After playing a few hours of the manga-based football title, we've come to a conclusion; Eyeshield may not be a must-have Wii game for American system owners (importing a system and games can be costly), but for anyone in possession of a Japanese Wii, Eyeshield may be the perfect game to combat the summer-time blues.

The Wii is the biggest thing since the DS over in Japan, and it looks like publishers are starting to take notice. In addition to the surprise announcement of Soul Calibur Legends, the latest issue of Famitsu is home to three Wii unveilings.
First up to plate (ha ha ha ha ha) is Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball Wii from Konami. This big-headed baseball game seems to be the Wii version of the PS2's Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 14, which is also unveiled in the issue. The Wii version will include an exclusive "Remo Pawa" mode where you use the Wiimote to swing and pitch. Both versions are scheduled for Japanese release on 7/19 at a price of 6980 yen.
The next title is a bit more mysterious -- so mysterious, in fact, that Famitsu doesn't even provide a title. Tecmo is bringing what it labels as a "new style action game" to the Wii. The game appears in Famitsu's release list as "Shin Kankaku Action Game," which is just the Japanese for the stuff in quotes in the last sentence. Details? Absolutely none at the moment.
Finally, one for the non-gamers out there. Hudson will be bringing its Jigsaw Puzzle series over from the DS. The first Wii installment, Jigsaw Puzzle Kyou no Wanko (roughly translated to English, Jigsaw Puzzle: Today's Dog) is set for release on 7/26 at a price of 3800 yen. The game features puzzles based around the Kyou no Wanko segment that airs early morning on Fuji Television.
Of these three games, only the Tecmo one has a chance of seeing release outside of Japan. But, then again, it could end up being some sort of action-oriented pachinko paradise game (Tecmo makes a pachinko series for the PS2 that utilizes the Bumpy Trot engine). Start speculating!

JSR has posted some info on his upcoming app for the Nintendo DS, basically you can use your Nintendo DS as a phone.
DSiP - VoIP for Nintendo DS
by JSR
_ i n f o
DSiP is a Softphone for the Nintendo DS (Voice-over-IP software). It's based on the standardised SIP protocol which is most commonly used in open VoIP networks.
You need a SIP account, which is generally offered by your ISP, in order to use the softphone. With it the softphone can be used to call friends on any type of line, such as a landline, over WiFi.
This softphone was written from scratch. It's designed as a lightweight softphone, and is fast enough to run on the DS.
_ n o t e s
The softphone is currently in beta stage. The first stable build will be released publically in June.
I'd be grateful for any donations, as a lot of effort was put into this softphone.
You can donate over PayPal to my PayPal account: jsr(_)star(@)hotmail(.)com
Feel free to wait for the stable build before donating, it's all up to you. Thanks a lot!

Eke-eke has released a new version of the Genesis emulator for the Nintendo Gamecube and Nintendo Wii:
Hi,
here is a new update for Genesis Plus with some of the last sound fixes as well as some internal emulation fixes (see below for more details).
08/05/2007:
- corrected L & R buttons assignment: fixes Genesis X & Z buttons being inverted
- VINT timings are now a little more accurate: fixes Sesame's Street Counting Cafe
- SN76496 MAX_OUTPUT back to normal
- modified FB_WNOISE value in SN76496 core according to John Kortink's last informations
- added support for Maxim's PSG core, same as used in SMSPLUS (it becomes the default PSG core)
- updated FM core to the latest MAME version
- corrected DAC output level (fixes voices and some special FX being too low)
- added support for Gens YM2612 (FM) core (MAME's one still remains default FM core)
- added configurable preamplification for each sound cores (see Emulator Options)
- added some other configurable sound options (boost overall volume, FM improvment for Gens YM2612)
Some notes about this release:
1/ I didn't forget to include the injector executable this time, you can find it in the /pcutils directory
2/ I added a special version for PAL Wii users who have display problems (dark bar on the screen) with regular versions. This version runs at 50hz and use special resync mechanism to prevent NTSC games running too slow. NGC (PAL or NTSC) users or NTSC Wii users should use the regular dol as the frame timing is more accurate in this one.
3/ You can now switch between sound cores and adjust the volume level for each one (PSG & FM), default values are automatically reset when switching between cores.

Clunky machine-translated rumors circulated yesterday that Square-Enix was working on another 3D remake of a Final Fantasy title for DS: Final Fantasy IV. Today, Japanese magazine Shonen Jump confirmed the speculation with a few grainy images. The game will use the same engine as the FFIII remake with at least one notable addition: skin-tight leather outfits.
The inevitable re-hashing of yet another Final Fantasy game by Square Enix. We would complain, but the thought of FF IV in 3D sooths our inner demons. Gamers who missed the original release can enjoy modern 3D visuals, Square Enix can make loads of cash while expending minimal resources, and veteran gamers can re-visit an old game in an entirely new way.

Nerfing usually has a negative connotation in gamer society; however, this is one nerfing we'd be happy to take. Unlike the utterly useless Wii peripherals created by Nerf, this DS Lite case is pure squishy goodness. Sister-site DSFanboy brings us the details on this case that you just want to fit your DS snugly into and drop on the ground to see if it breaks (but seriously, don't do that). The case retails for $12.99 and gives some extra girth to the DS allowing gamers with big hands to reduce those lovely hand cramps some experience.
PDP, the company that makes the product, says that the cases are available in most major electronic store outlets -- including Wal-Mart. If you're a commuter this may be a great case to have when dropping your DS into your bag. It's also probably good for you gamer parents that just can't trust your kid not to break your toy.

Well here's one rumor that got confirmed pretty damn quickly. A reader sent us in a scan from Japanese magazine Shonen Jump, confirming that a Final Fantasy IV (2 stateside) 3D remake is in the works for the DS.
I know I should be impressed by Cecil's new 3D look, but it's giving me this odd sort of Viewtiful Joe vibe. Honestly I don't think this game needed to be remade. It was perfect as it was and this...this just feels wrong. Like meeting a cute young girl who sounds exactly like your grandmother when she talks. Disturbing.

The first of three collaborative titles between EA and director Steven Spielberg will debut on Nintendo Wii, the company has confirmed.
The title was described simply as "Wii Spielberg" in an EA conference call this morning, and it will join the recently-announced EA Playground and Boogie as console exclusives on Nintendo's platform.
The Spielberg deal was first announced way back in October 2005 and we haven't seen anything of it since. Thankfully this first Wii title has been slated for release before the end of 2008 fiscal year - so we should be seeing more of it very soon.
EA's support for Nintendo's console has never been questioned but considering the cinematic capabilities of the PS3 and Xbox 360, it's somewhat of a surprise that Spielberg has decided to make his game debut on Wii.

In his latest attack on the world of videogames, Jack Thomspon is calling on fast-food chain Wendy's to cancel a Kid's Meal Wii promotion.
Reported on GameAlmighty.com, Wendy's is including Wii-related toys such as Mario, Excite Truck, Wii Sports, and the Wii remote with the meals; but it's the console's association with Rockstar's forthcoming Manhunt 2 which has caused Thompson to call for the promotion to end.
In a letter sent to Wendy's CEO Kerri Anderson, Thompson said,
I should like to alert you to the inappropriateness of the above upcoming promotion at Wendy's, in light of the below information.
On July 10, an extremely violent video game will be released for "play" on Nintendo's kid-friendly Wii game platform. It is called Manhunt 2. It will feature, according to video game news sites, beheadings with hatchets, bludgeonings with baseball bats, the jamming of syringes into eyeballs, cutting opponents' testicles off, and "environtmental [sic] kills" in which common objects in the field of vision, such as electrical cords to strangle victims. I attach news reports in these regards.
What makes this Nintendo Wii game all the more troubling is the nature of Wii platform itself. Instead of holding in one's hand the typical game controller, the player holds motion capture devices, so that by moving one's hands and limbs one is actually acting out with one's own body the violent behavior. The American Psychological Association in August 2005 found a direct causal link between the play of violent video games and increased adolescent and teen aggression. One pro-video game industry site is referring to Manhunt 2 as a "true murder simulator" when played on Wii.
A dear friend of mine worked for Wendy's and with Dave Thomas closely for years. From that I know that Dave Thomas never would have tolerated the use of Wendy's good name to promote Nintendo's Wii, not with this game available on the Wii platform.
Please cancel the Wii Kids' Meal promotion immediately.
To date, the Wendy's promotion has not been cancelled.

If you've got some mad Yu-Gi-Oh skills or reckon you can shout even louder than the nutty characters in the cartoon then you might want to haul your ass down to the Emirates Football Stadium in London and compete in the Yu-Gi-Oh World Championships.
The UK leg of the tournament, partly hosted by Konami, is taking place this weekend (May 12/13), and is part of a huge Yu-Gi-Oh event held at the stadium.
If you're a ninja at Yu-Gi-Oh World Championship 2007 on DS and fancy a punt, all you have to do is register at Konami's site, and get down there with your DS in hand.

Boogie will have you singing, dancing and generally embarrassing yourself on Wii, and here's the first footage giving you a taste of the funky flavours to come.
The short and relatively low-res video features a girl busting her moves on stage, but doesn't really show how the game will be played or what the game will really look like. For that, you'd do better to look at the new screens below.
Hopefully EA will show off the game in more depth in coming weeks.

EA Playground, the publishing giant's pop at appealing to the Wii Sports crowd, will not support online play for either the DS or Wii according to Game Daily.
EA has already confirmed that all of the mini games packed into EA's family-orientated title will be multiplayer-compatible, and that players will earn stickers during their exploits which can be traded with other players.
But you'll be linking up directly to do any of this, if reports turn out to be accurate. EA, however, refrained from confirming either way.

PC gamers have been hammering it for weeks but on Friday Xbox 360 owners will finally get their grubby mitts on EA's third, long-awaited Command & Conquer installment.
If EA chatter is anything to go by Xbox 360 might not be the end of C&C3's console campaign either: "We haven't officially confirmed anything, but I don't see why it's not feasible," Senior Producer Mike Glosecki said of a PS3 version, in an interview with Gameplayer. "The controls are practically the same."
Although trickier, a Wii version with motion controls obviously brings up a lot more exciting possibilities for the RTS legend - and it looks like EA is pondering as well. "There isn't as much under the hood," says Glosecki, "so it obviously won't look as good. But as far as control goes, I don't see why it can't be done."
:
As for the future of the 360 version, Glosecki promises new multiplayer maps on Xbox Live Markeplace "over the coming months".

Previous versions of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon allowed players to face-off online, but the Wii version doesn't. Why? Midway points the finger at Nintendo.
"Obviously we had online on other platforms so it wasn't going to be a technology challenge for us," said the game's producer, Shaun Himmerick, to advancedmn.com. "Nintendo didn't have their online system ready for us when we would have needed to implement it," he continued.
Nintendo must have been hogging the online tools for themselves then, because Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is set to release in June, after Nintendo's own Mario Strikers Charged - the first online Wii game in Europe - which goes on sale later this month.
To prevent Wii owners from feeling completely shafted, however, Himmerick goes on to reason: "That is a big reason we focused on giving the single player experience even more attention to perfect the new controls system, the addition of Endurance mode and an additional Kharacter."

The latest issue of Japanese mag Famitsu (we've never heard of it) lists a brand new Soul Calibur game for Wii.
According to a rough translation of the mag Soul Calibur Legends - as it's being called - lets you "meet the Soul Calibur characters and fight using the Wii Remote", though probably not necessarily in that order.
We haven't been able to get anything out of Namco Bandai yet but speculation is already writhe on good old internet forums. Is it an adventure spin-off? Will the new controls work? Will Link be in it? We'll let you know as soon as we hear anything more.
