In news that is sure to set tongues wagging and arms waggling, IGN reports that Lara Croft will soon raid a more modern tomb -- your Wii's game shelf. In a press release issued by an international Eidos branch, Tomb Raider: Anniversary is stated as being in development for Nintendo's popular console. Previously, the remake was only slated for release on the PC (including GameTap), PlayStation 2 and PSP.
With Eidos holding out on costly PS3 releases until 2008 and with no Xbox 360 version of Anniversary in sight, it seems the Wii is benefiting for once by being lumped in a similar technological bracket as the PS2. It makes for a quick and financially sensible port, it's only challenge being the tacking on implementation of unique motion controls. We're hoping for an ice-cold virtual hand to poke Lara into position for those tricky jumps.
No Anniversa-Wii date has been set, but other platforms begin festivities on June 5th.

IGN is currently running with a rumor that the long-running, internally published magazine Nintendo Power may be ceasing operations within the year. The site's sources tell them that "mass layoffs are underway and that employees are being told to look for new work by September."
IGN's Matt Cassamassina speculates that the magazine may be shutting down due to the company's recently discussed relocation of certain operations outside of Seattle and competition from other publications.
The officially sanctioned Nintendo magazine saw its first issue go out to the NES faithful in the summer of 1988. I was one of the original subscribers and pored over that issue with the obsessively nerdy intensity only a preteen Nintendo fanboy can.

I found this about a month and a half ago, so you may have seen it now - but if not, check out Ecolis, an incredibly appealing RTS for the DS. I am absolutely not an RTS player, but looking at these screens makes me want to buy the game right now. Cute sprite things in isometric 3D backgrounds with a chunky pixel map on the top screen...I'm sold! The character design is really solid too.
This is actually an internally-developed game from Interchannel (I believe it's internal anyway), which is what's left of the NEC gaming legacy. NEC had NEC Avenue for internal development before, and Interchannel for publishing and development...then Avenue disappeared. Then NEC Interchannel started to die as the dreamcast fell...then it got sold, and just became Interchannel. And now here we are, crossing our fingers that Ecolis is the second coming. It's coming at some point in 2007...

Balancing budgets, reducing pollution, and addressing traffic congestion sounds about as exciting as watching grass grow. But Will Wright's SimCity proved that building and managing your own city could be both fun and addictive when it released in 1989.
The new version - scheduled to release in June 2007 - injects an assortment of DS-centric gameplay features, adding some flare to this pocket-sized iteration of the PC classic. You'll blow in your microphone to put out fires and kill rampaging monsters by tapping on them with your stylus. We also saw a special event where Santa Claus came to town. Tapping him with the stylus will force the jolly St. Nick to drop gifts for your sim-citizens.

The original Acclaim went under in 2004, but its last few projects haven't let a little thing like the death of their publisher keep them from being released. After Acclaim's bankruptcy, THQ quickly picked up and later released the street racer Juiced, and last month XS Games released The Red Star while Aspyr brought Made Man (formerly Interview with a Made Man) to retail.
Yet another Acclaim game is set to arrive at retailers, as a Warner Bros. Interactive representative confirmed for GameSpot today that it will be distributing the defunct company's driving game Emergency Mayhem. Originally announced for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, Emergency Mayhem is being adapted for the Wii by Codemasters, and is one of a handful of the publisher's titles that Warner Bros. will release in North America.
No details have been revealed about the game in its current incarnation, but as introduced at the 2004 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Emergency Mayhem was a tongue-in-cheek action-driving that put players in control of fire, police, and medical response vehicles in Crisis City. True to its name, Crisis City is beset by all manner of calamities, and the Crazy Taxi-styled game required players to navigate traffic to reach scenes of trouble, where they would then play minigames to put out literal and metaphorical fires.

We're approaching six months after the Wii was released here in UK and it's still sold out across the country, but while reports suggest an increase in stock, retailers are still unsure when the situation will improve.
Wii Play moved up to number two in the all-formats chart, which Chart Track put down to renewed Wii hardware stock. "Nintendo chose to release quite a large supply of Wii stock last week, meaning that those eager to get their hands on the innovative new system would finally get their wish, thus impacting greatly on the UK charts."
CVG spoke to HMV, GAME and Virgin Megastores in London, who said Nintendo has typically been delivering units on a weekly basis but those are quickly snapped up. HMV stores told us they for 30 units each last week, which were gone by Saturday morning.
GAME and HMV said they expect the situation to improve by the end of May, with deliveries having steadily increased in recent weeks.
But don't get too excited because none of the three retailers had any Wii units in stock when we asked.

Staring those bizarre virtual pet creatures, Tamagotchi: Party on! is a four-player party game, which Atari is readying for an August release over here.
Party On! is the first 3D Tamagotchi game and takes on the Mario Party series with a similar board game-style design, with players facing off in a selection of humorous mini games.
It's worth noting, though, that despite the virtual pet background these creatures are famous for, there are no virtual pet mechanics in this game.

Eidos has unveiled a new publishing label dubbed SoGoPlay to target casual gamers.
Four key factors form SoGoPlay's mission statement; compelling gameplay, immediate playability, mass market appeal and an affordable price. The first crop of titles from the SoGoPlay stable includes SPY-Q and Nervous Brickdown for DS and Merry-Go-Round Dreams for PC download. There will also be a number of PS2 and Wii titles ready for the autumn.
"Sales of casual games both online and at retail have exploded in recent months and we intend to harness the existing growth potential in the US as well as position ourselves ready for the anticipated boom to come in Europe," said Lou Fawcett, head of casual games at Eidos. "But it's not just PC games that we're focusing on, it's also console and mobile games that have a broad appeal. We're aiming to establish SoGoPlay as the flagship casual games brand."

A seemingly narked Bungie has responded to comments made by Nintendo legend, Shigeru Miyamoto who claimed he could make Halo.
Last week Miyamoto was quoted saying: "I could make Halo. It's not that I couldn't design that game. It's just that I choose not to."
Taking that as a personal challenge, Bungie's Frank O'Connor told Joystiq: "I just want to go on the record and say that Bungie is hard at work on a side-scrolling platform game featuring some plumbers - I'm not going to say what their ethnicity is, it's none of anyone's business."
He went on to say: "We took [his comments] as a gauntlet, a sort of glove slap, and we're going to respond in 2D scrolling style. That's all I'm saying."

Wii owners only get one title this week. Sad, we know, but at least it isn't the weeks and weeks of missing titles like it was back in January and February, so perhaps we can take some comfort in that? Regardless, if you're dying for a new game, Activision has you covered.
This week's release is:

Sega Studio producer, Takashi Iizuka has made it known that he would like the upcoming NiGHTS: Journey into Dreams for the Nintendo Wii to utilise the Nintendo W-Fi Connection when it arrives on the console later this year.
“Currently, we are investigating a number of features that will utilize the Wii network capability,” Iizuka told IGN, “but, at this time we have not decided on any specific functionality yet.”
On a similarly vague note, he went on to tell the gaming website, “Ultimately, we would like to have multiplayer functionality as well as a way to tap into the Nintendo network where players could share their game experience on a world-wide level.”
Of course, whether this means, just an online leader board or, in actual fact, a fully functioning console-to-console multiplayer element in still unknown, although we bet that the majority of gamers would be praying for the latter. We already know that the game will interact with the Wii’s Weather Channel to synchronise weather conditions depending on the time of year, so who knows?
The Sega employee also revealed that work on the new Wii-exclusive title and follow-up to the Sega Saturn favourite had begun last year. He went on to explain some of the challenges that the firm faced in developing controls for the Wii remote:
“Initially, we envisioned using the Wii remote as sort of a “magic wand”, where NiGHTS could be directed simply by movements of the controller,” he revealed. “But with any new input device, we were finding some limitations using just the remote. That is why we are also designing the game to be played using the remote with the Nunchuk for a more “traditional” control configuration.”
Sega of America’s Vice President of Marketing, Scott Steinberg, has previously promised us the following in relation to the game’s control method, so we remain hopeful that the company can pull off something special:
“We plan to deliver a gameplay experience never before seen on the Wii with NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. The game takes full advantage of the unique Wii Remote controller enabling gamers to guide NiGHTS through spectacularly designed dream worlds intertwined with a story about hope and courage.”
