Despite some signs of trouble earlier this year, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told Kotaku why third-parties have a bright future on Wii and DS.
The company that's been riding high on its own Wii and DS successes has recently had some trouble convincing people that marquee games from publishers other than Nintendo can do well on Nintendo's machines.
Sega's hardcore-hyped MadWorld launched on the Wii with 66,000 copies sold in the U.S. in March, according to the NPD group.
Take Two's Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars — the best-reviewed game on the DS — launched that same month with fewer than 90,000 copies sold in the U.S.
"There is no magic number that says x = profitability," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told Kotaku during our E3 interview last week, further clarifying earlier comments on the matter.
Two non-Nintendo games he expects to perform well are Sega's The Conduit and EA's Dead Space Extraction, both first-person games with a darker tone that Nintendo's standard. "I am really optimistic about The Conduit," he said. "I think it looks great, plays great. I think Dead Space Extraction is going to be fabulous given the early builds that I've seen. So, I do think that we will continue to see not only great titles, but great sales, on higher-rated M and T type of titles on our platforms."
Fils-Aime addressed the seeming struggles of some of those M-rated games on Wii and DS from earlier this year.
As other Nintendo reps have said before him, Fils-Aime thinks Chinatown Wars may have been counted out too soon by people focusing on its launch numbers. "In the handheld space, with Nintendo platforms specifically — whether it's Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS — the fact is that first month sales really don't matter," he said. "You have a title like Mario Kart, in its first month, a holiday month that did just over 200,000 copies. New Super Mario Brothers, which launched in the summer, did over 150,000 in its first month. Those are not huge numbers, yet both of those have gone on to sell more than four million units apiece and to be in the top 10 total industry titles for the last two years running. So, first month doesn't matter in the handheld space as long as it's a high-quality game, which Chinatown Wars is, has some continuous level of marketing support — whether its retail marketing, consumer marketing, online — as long as you keep the buzz going it will continue to sell millions and millions. And that's my expectation for Chinatown Wars. As long as the team at Take Two and Rockstar give it a long life, it will do very well."
Reggie said he would have liked to have seen higher sales for MadWorld but doesn't think its launch counts out other M-rated Wii games. "The challenge with home console is that for a 'gamer game' you need to have the buzz and the expectation early and you need to support the title for a number of months to drive the sales. On both of those fronts, I'm not sure MadWorld was able to do that."
It's not an M-rated Wii game, but EA Sports Active just had a blockbuster debut of supposedly more than 600,000 copies sold in its first two weeks, according to EA.
Those are the arguments. Don't count Wii and DS third-party games out for 2009 yet, Nintendo says. There will plenty of high profile games to test that.
The Conduit is out this month. Dead Space Extraction ships in September.

Browsing through Pocketheaven forums i noticed this post by DCEmu Member/Coder Ingramb:
If a new version comes out, it will use a folder rather than the root. Never got around to doing this. If someone wants to release an unofficial version with this enabled, that's fine with me.
Frame skip wont help too much, because as JLSoft says, video rendering is fast. Loading data from the card is slow. Emulating the CPU is slow. These things are harder to skip unfortunately.
When is a new version coming out? Not really working on NeoDS for now. There are other projects I am interested in. I would like to return at some point, but there is only so much time. We'll see. In the meantime, the source is out there. If anyone wants to release versions that adds some commonly requested features like loading roms from a different folder, that's cool. I'm even willing to offer some help, either through this board or via email.

MetaFight has updated Harmonium to v1 beta2
Harmonium is, to put it plainly, a musical doodling tool. The user can manipulate notes on a 16x16 grid to create melodies within a pentatonic scale. On top of this already addictive concept, you can bring things to life by enabling Conway's Game of Life!
It's not the easiest thing to explain, so just try it!
It is important to mention, as well, that the concept behind Harmonium isn't my own. André Michelle has a very similar application on his website which served as Harmonium's inspiration.
Changelog
11 June 2009, v1 beta2
Implemented a few features I'd like feedback on before implementing the rest and releasing v1.
New features:
Adjustable tempo
Adjustable volume
2 new GoL modes
Grid shifting
64 grid history
New timing mechanism means even playback
Typematic to make grid shifting and history browsing faster and easier.

Square Enix has been promising a June Japanese date for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles My Life as a Dark Lord for some time now. Today, things got specific. The game is now due for Japanese release on June 30.
Pricing is set at 1,000 WiiPoints. This is 500 WiiPoints lower than the game's predecessor, My Life as a King. It's possible that Square Enix will be offering paid download content for Dark Lord as they did for King, although the company has yet to make any announcements towards this end.
To go along with this announcement, we've managed to get our hands on some new screens of the game. Check it out in our media section.
Also be sure and visit the download section of the game's official Japanese site for some sweet wallpapers.
My Life as a Dark Lord is expected for stateside release some time in 2009.

With all the rapid-fire 3D action, Metroid: Other M may not look anything like any Metroid we've seen before, but according to Reggie Fils-Aime, it's a return to a more familiar Metroid style. "A year ago, someone could have asked me, what's going on with Metroid?" Fils-Aime told GameSpot. "When are we going to go back to the more traditional Metroid series versus the path that we went down with Prime? Here's the answer: Other M." The more traditional series -- with a "harder edge," according to Fils-Aime.
Reggie would like Other M to sell a bit more than the traditional Metroid game, however. "Metroid, for us, is a key franchise. And, in our view, really, since the SNES Metroid, we haven't broken through in terms of 1.5, two million units, and that's our bar," he said. He also told GameSpot that he's beginning to hear feedback from other companies, hoping to work with Nintendo in the same way Team Ninja is on Other M.

Scientists are investigating the use of Wii Sports as a form of treatment for Parkinson's sufferers. After a four-week study, researchers found that rounds of tennis, bowling, and boxing improved rigidity, movement, fine motor skills, and energy levels as well as decreasing the occurrence of depression. It is thought that combining exercise with video games helps to increase levels of dopamine, a chemical that is deficient in Parkinson's. The therapy is gaining notoriety under the name Wii-hab.

A patent infringement lawsuit brought against Nintendo over parental control technology has been dismissed.
According to a statement issued by Nintendo, Judge Manuel Real of the US District Court of Los Angeles granted Nintendo's motion for summary judgment of non-infringement on June 8.
"We are very pleased with the Court's decision," said Nintendo of America senior vice president of legal and general counsel Rick Flamm.
"Nintendo vigorously defends patent lawsuits. At the earliest stages of this case, Nintendo convinced the Court to dismiss this case as Guardian's patent had nothing to do with Nintendo's products."
The patent in question - US Patent 4,930,158, "Selective video playing system" - was filed by Guardian Media in 1988. It is essentially technology created for the sake of parental control, allowing a user to block objectionable content from being accessible.
Guardian's case against Nintendo is part of a larger suit against several companies that employ similar tech.

Famitsu were right to sense more Tingle from Nintendo, because a teaser website for what must surely be a new game starring the company's most...eccentric little man has gone live.
There's a brief cameo from Tingle, there's a fortune teller surrounded by skulls, and there's a section where you can write in and say what's on your mind. And that's it. A trailer will go live on the 18th, which is next Thursday.
Could it be a sequel to Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, a quirky but somewhat excellent RPG for the DS that was released in Japan and Europe, but not the US? Let's hope so!

Sleeman and Whiteside form new publisher; Key kids licences already signed up
The demise of Pinnacle Software hasn’t slowed some of its former senior management – two of its staff have already formed a new publishing outfit.
P2 Games is formed by Peter Sleeman and Gerry Whiteside and will focus on DS, Wii, PC and digital download games.
Previously the two had spearheaded Pinnacle’s push into publishing games prior to the collapse of its parent firm.
The new publisher’s first signings are top kids brands Tracy Beaker and Peppa Pig, with Wii, DS and PC titles due within months.
Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracy Beaker The Game will be available on DS and PC from August 28th. Meanwhile Peppa Pig The Game will be released for Nintendo Wii on September 11th.
The firm is already keenly courting other licensees for boxed product and also independent developers for original IP to release digitally.
Sleeman explained: “We look forward to re-kindling our strong developer relationships and we are actively looking for new innovative gaming content and brands that will help us to achieve our goal of chart success in 2009 and beyond.”
Whiteside added: “We’re delighted to be back working together and truly believe that the wealth of our experience can add real value to the video game industry.”

While North America gets to enjoy a brand new Mario vs. Donkey Kong game on the US DSi Store this week, us Europeans will have to make do with Smash Bros. on Virtual Console. Not that we're bitter or anything.
Elsewhere in this week's European Nintendo downloads is Cocoto Platform Jumper for WiiWare and a pair of similarly not-very-exciting-sounding DSiWare games.
Here's the list:
Virtual Console
Super Smash Bros. (N64 / 1000 Points)
WiiWare
Cocoto Platform Jumper (Neko / 700 Points)
DSiWare
Asphalt 4: Elite Racing (Gameloft / 800 Points)
Sudoku 150! For Challengers (Hudson / 500 Points)
