Frontier boss David Braben reckons the problem with Wii review scores stems from the type of critic assessing the game.
"Ruling out a source of information is never a good idea," Braben told Eurogamer, responding to Peter Moore's declaration that Metacritic is irrelevant to the success of a Wii game.
"The main problem he is alluding to is that family games tend to get reviewed poorly, if at all, by many mainstream review sites, typically dropping 10 or more percentage points as a result. Anecdotally, this is because most reviewers are what are often called 'core gamers' - and these family-focused games tend to appeal less to them (us!).
"It throws up a difficult dilemma for those reviewers," he adds. "Are they reviewing the game for those people likely to play it, or for those people who form the bulk of their readership? Clearly it has to be the latter, as that is why they are writing the review, why they are getting paid, but it devalues the accuracy of reviews as a measure of quality for family games, as most reviews are targeted at these 'core gamers', despite the fact the core gamer is unlikely to play it whatever the score."
Peter Moore argued that an advert on a website for a woman's magazine drives as much interest and consequently sales as a high review score. Examples are common and frequent: Punch-Out!!, MadWorld, Boom Blox, Okami and No More Heroes all reviewed well but sold badly in the UK. Conversely, Carnival: Funfair Games received 5/10 on Eurogamer but still enjoys a top 40 spot in the UK All-Formats chart one-and-a-half years after release.
"At Frontier we also use review scores as part of a forecasting process, but this is an indication of perceived quality, and this accuracy problem for family games is an issue that has to be allowed for. So, though I agree with Peter Moore that there is an issue here, it is more one with family games - indeed any games that do not include conventional dedicated gamers in their main audience - which are very common on Wii," said Braben.
"If there were an equivalent rating to Metacritic that only indexed family review sites, MetaFamilyCritic say, indexing the 'mommy bloggers' to which he refers, then he is not circumventing review sites - simply using a more appropriate collection that better match the audience.
"It is not really the Wii that Peter Moore is complaining about but reviews of family games in general. 'Core gamer' games on Wii still track forecasts based on Metacritic scores just fine," he concluded.
Yesterday, various industry sources argued on Eurogamer that success on the Wii is dictated by the size of advertising budget available, or the strength of brand in question.
The Wii titles present in the UK All-Formats top 40 this week support that theory.

Augmented reality (AR) has mostly been limited to research labs and the occasional cool webcam trick, but it's slowly becoming more plausible as a means for new forms of portable games. We saw one such title -- Sony's Invizimals for PSP -- at E3 and were wowed by its insertion of CG objects into "reality" using the system's camera add-on. Now a tech demo from Georgia Tech Augmented Environments Lab and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD-Atlanta) gives us a glimpse at even more possibilities for these games on devices such as iPhone, PSP and Nintendo DSi.
Titled ARhrrr (geddit?), the game is a zombie shooter in which a flat tabletop map produces a cityscape seen on the handheld (in this case a prototype device from Nvidia). The city's populated with zombies, the handheld can be moved around at any angle and the overlayed city rotates accordingly. The idea behind the demo is that players are controlling a helicopter flying above the outbreak and can shoot zombies by tapping the screen. It's limited, but nonetheless really cool.
We've popped the demo footage after the break to rock your non-augmented reality. It's pretty impressive. So, what implimentations of AR on handhelds would you like to see?

Retailers have begun to price highly-anticipated Hero titles from Activision before the publisher has stamped an official RRP on the items.
Amazon.com is currently listing DJ Hero, the next title in the best-selling music franchise, for USD 119.99 (GBP 73), complete with turntable peripheral, ahead of its October launch.
The Band Hero Bundle, which comes complete with guitar, drums and microphone, is listed by Play.com for GBP 149.99 on Wii and PlayStation 2, and down for release in November.
Activision's Guitar Hero boss Dan Rosensweig recently stated that international growth outside of the US was one of the main focuses for the company's music brands, with DJ Hero in particular targeted at a more European audience.

Here's a batch of Ashes Cricket 2009 screenshots, to coincide with news that English batsman Kevin Pietersen will be the "face" of the game.
Pietersen joins Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne and Sir Ian Botham in Ashes Cricket 2009's player line-up.
"I am delighted to be involved with the official game of the Ashes," said 'KP' (like the peanuts). "The game looks fantastic and I'm sure both England and Australia fans are going to relish the opportunity to take part in a virtual Ashes series. Representing your country in the Ashes is a huge honour and I can't wait for it to start."
Codies promises to "build on the heritage" of its classic Brian Lara series with "great batting, bowling and fielding gameplay and authenticity".
It's out for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC in August.

.: MIK:. we propose a new version of its utility "GameUP" that will allow you to download and install homebrews directly on your Linker from your DS and a wifi connection. GameUP reflects the Homebrew Browser for Wii.
Quote:
* New make more clear
* At the fist startup, GameUP will create a folder (in the root) that will be used to manage all the files Gameup needs (no more bmp and txt files into the card spread)
* Fixed a bug in game listing (repetition of some elements when small print out a list after a bigger one)
* New games are uploaded even marked on the DS through a small green mushroom next to their name into the list so you can immediatelly see what's new in the game's archive.

Bed racing, fish throwing and skydive ironing are just some of the supposedly "real life" sports going on in these new shots of Sega's Wacky World of Sports on Wii.
"Wacky World of Sports takes players on a trip around the world to try their hand at some of the lesser known sports of countries including Italy, the Netherlands and Australia," says Sega.
Are they real sports? Sega says yes. "Tuna Tossing has been a popular sport down under for a number of years now, but just how far can that tuna be thrown in the comfort of the living room? Drag out an old armchair to take part in Furniture Racing, but make sure Grandma is not still sat in it, as those chairs are fast! And if that's still not bizarre enough, how about ironing a shirt at one thousand feet in the Extreme Ironing event?!"
It's down for "late 2009".

BlazerRazor has posted some details and a screenshot of whats coming in the next release of his app for DS:
Remote Touch DS gives you the opportunity to remote-control your computers mouse, keyboard and other things from your Nintendo DS hand-held console. This solution is not like remote desktop, but more like an advanced remote control.
The solution is client-server based, obviously, and requires you to have a server running. It is not plugged with synergy, it is my own solution. The server receives commands from the Nintendo DS and acts according to them.
Next upcoming release (0.2):
Updating and calibrate keyboard.
Moving left and right mouse clicks to left and right key, and y and a - better comfort.
Be able to enter TCP and UDP on client-side (only server-side has this option now).
New media control extended (MEX); with extra features, great for media center and similar.
If you have something you would like added, make a wish in this thread

The Nintendo Wii is one of the most popular consoles on the market. It introduced new motion controllers and concepts that are now being copied by its rivals, but in terms of technology it is nothing more than an upgraded GameCube, which is blatant when you compare it to the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.
However, there has been a big amount of speculation on when the Wii will eventually get HD and be on par with its main rivals on the market. Analysts pegged the change around 2010-2011, but it now seems that the president of the company, Satoru Iwata, doesn't share that optimistic view.
He recently talked to VentureBeat about the HD upgrade of the Wii and revealed that: “ If we have an opportunity to make a new console, it will probably support HD because it is now common throughout the world. However, as far as the Wii is concerned, we have not found a significant reason to make it HD-compatible at this time.”
The executive went on to say that: “What is the significant meaning to the users? I don't think we should do it unless we find that reason. If we decide for other reasons to make new hardware, then HD is one of the things we would naturally add. As for timing, it may be three years from now, five years from now or eight years from now.”
It's worth taking into account the fact that analog broadcasts in Japan stop in 2011, meaning that an HD Wii might be possible around that time or very close after it. Nothing is for sure though, as Nintendo was always very independent when it came to its hardware releases.
Hopefully, we will see a Wii capable of much nicer graphics in the near future, in order for the console to sell even better around the world.

A MAN from West Yorkshire who beat his ex-girlfriend to death in her home was today jailed for life after being found guilty of her murder.
Suleman Khan, 24, stamped on Amy Booth's head with such force that the soles of his trainers left an imprint on her face, Bradford Crown Court heard.
He made off with a flat screen television and a Nintendo Wii games console after the attack, which happened at Miss Booth's home in Wellington Place, New Road, Halifax, in December last year.
Khan, of Dunkirk Terrace, Halifax, who was also convicted of robbery, was told he would spend at least 20 years in prison.
The court heard that he had been jailed for five months in 2007 for a similar assault on Miss Booth.
Detective Superintendent Chris Thompson, of West Yorkshire Police, who led the murder inquiry, said: "This was a very difficult case for all of those concerned with the investigation into this senseless and brutal assault against a young and vibrant young woman.
"Bringing Khan to justice was a real team effort involving skilled and dedicated officers from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, divisional CID, the Forensic Science Service, Crown Prosecution Service and prosecution barrister.
"This was a meticulous investigation and the evidence against Khan was overwhelming, but despite this he subjected Amy's family to a difficult and traumatic trial.
"In court Khan claimed Amy had provoked the attack but he was a violent and controlling bully whose sole motivation for this, and an earlier attack in March 2007, was to punish her."
Divisional Crown Prosecutor for Calderdale Jane Cryer said: "This was a vicious attack on a young woman in her own home and we extend our deepest condolences to Amy's family and friends. We have worked closely with West Yorkshire Police from the outset.
"We realize that nothing can heal the pain of Amy's family and friends but we hope that this successful prosecution brings some measure of comfort to them.
"The conviction of Amy's killer within six months of her death is due in no small part to the professionalism, commitment and hard work of those involved in every stage of this prosecution.
"It is some small satisfaction to see that justice has been served in this case."
Mansoor Ahmed, 28, of Mayfield Drive, King Cross, Halifax, who had also been accused of Miss Booth's murder and robbery, was acquitted by the jury.

Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 may be a fighting game linked to an anime license, but Tomy is keeping it competitive. By that I mean, developing the game for competitive fighting fans first.
Tomy gave me a look at how players can balance fights. You can adjust life, chakra recovery rate, and seemingly little details like toggling invincibility while side stepping. Players can even set matches so a rival has to land a special attack to win a fight. Think of these as a lite version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix’s dip switches. Settings can be configured for offline and online matches. That’s right Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 has online play and Eighting is developing online code. Hmm… I wonder what other Wii game could benefit from that.
Details about the online mode are still in the shadows. Right now it supports two players and has two settings. Friend mode lets you challenge a friend. Rival mode searches for rivals without the need for friend codes.
Eighting is also changing the move sets for existing characters so this game won’t be exactly like EX1. For instance, Deidara has a unique throw where he plants a bomb on his opponent’s face. All characters also have two new getting up moves. You can either do a rising attack and hit a player trying to squeeze in an extra hit or teleport to safety. All of the enhancements like character swapping and hand signs from Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution 2 will be in this game too.
I asked about the 30+ characters number and the only thing Tomy could confirm is the game covers the Rescue Gaara arc. It might go beyond that, it might not. They also said this game will have surprises in the roster.
Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution 2 introduced Gaara’s teacher, Baki, and a slew of made for the game ninja. Which characters can Tomy add to this game? Chiyo? Characters from the Kakashi Gaiden manga?

World of Goo developer 2D Boy, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter and an industry-leading developer all support Peter Moore's claims that review scores are not as important to the success of Wii games as enormous advertising budgets.
"A lot of these games that you think are the perfect game for Wii don't sell because companies don't have the money to market them," a high profile member of an industry-leading developer explained to Eurogamer. "Whereas Nintendo is spending gazillions of dollars marketing their games.
"It's fool's gold, the Wii. It looks great, but it's very hard to get money out of it. It's an empty mine for most software developers, including the big ones. It's Nintendo games that people buy on those platforms, and a few others.
"If you spend the money to go after the audience on Wii, it's pure risk," the source added.
There are notable examples of Wii games reviewing well but falling on deaf wallets - even Nintendo titles. Punch-Out!! still hasn't broken into the UK All-Formats top 40, and MadWorld, Okami and Boom Blox all quickly sunk without trace.
Peter Moore argued that Metacritic averages are "less critical" to the success of a Wii game than they are to PS3 or Xbox 360 titles; he said he can generate just as much interest for an EA Sports title from a well-placed advert on a website for a women's magazine.
"Peter is a wise man. I would never question anything he says, as I was taught to respect my elders," Michael Pachter told Eurogamer.
"I think that Metacritic scores are irrelevant for people who don't look at them - how's that for obvious? While there are many Wii owners who are hardcore and who care very much about scores, there are many - perhaps half - who are quite casual, and wouldn't know Metacritic if it fell on them.
"Clearly, somebody's buying Carnival Games, Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum, etc.," he added. "A well positioned game with an interesting concept can sell well on the Wii regardless of review scores, and I think that is what Peter's talking about."
But not everyone has the luxury of bottomless banks. 2D Boy, developer of World of Goo, explains that from an indie perspective, Metacritic scores matter "a lot".
"It sounds totally reasonable that reviews don't matter for AAA blockbusters and sports game franchises, just like reviews don't matter for Will Smith movies," 2D Boy co-founder Kyle Gabler told Eurogamer. "The audience already knows what they are going to get.
"But for indie guys like us, Metacritic and review scores matter a lot. In fact we link directly to them from our web site. So does Steam. It makes a lot of sense - potential players don't feel comfortable dishing out cash for some random unknown indie game without an aggregate thumbs-up from solid reviewers."
At least we're not out of a job just yet.

That's the first Professor Layton game. And a DS Lite. Despite the current availability of a new DS system, and the impending launch of a new Professor Layton game, Nintendo is planning a UK release of a bundle containing a black DS Lite and the extremely popular first Professor Layton game, due in stores June 19.
MCV suggests that it's being positioned as a Father's Day bundle, but we could see it selling well beyond the gift-giving occasion, due to two factors: first, the enduring hit status of Professor Layton, and second, wow, is that ever a classy-looking box design.

Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto has said he'd "encourage" Retro Studios - developer of the Metroid Prime games - to come up with another idea for the series.
"With regards to the Prime series, if the team at Retro comes up with an idea that does bring a sequel to the series to fruition, I by all means encourage them to do that," he said.
"But I'm not directly involved with the Prime games. In terms of the Metroid series stories that I've told, the games that I've been involved in, I started with the NES Metroid and took it through Fusion.
"I'm hoping to tie the Super Metroid and Fusion stories together, and until I do that I can't think about what happens after Fusion, but if the concept does come to me I'd like to continue the story and see how far it can go," he told Wired.
Sakamoto also spoke of his aims with the upcoming (and sweet-looking) Metroid Other M. "Within the greater Metroid series, the Other M story will tie together the stories that took place in Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion," he said.
"One of my goals is to present Samus as an appealing human character, and that involves explaining a little bit about what happened in her past as well as the characters that influenced her. The story will play a big part."
