MAME Wii is an Arcade Emulator based on SDLMAME. Many games for early arcade boards can be played with varying amounts of success.
Issues
Lots of ROMs are supported, but not all of them. If you don't see the ROM in the list in the emulator, then support for that ROM isn't included. This is to keep the size of the emulator low enough to run effectively on the Wii. A list of all the ones that are can be found here: http://www.toadking.com/wiimame-0.4.txt
Just because a ROM is supported does not mean it will run. Even games for early boards like CPS-1 can fail to run due to RAM limitations. If the emulator suddenly kicks you out to the Homebrew Channel, look in the MAME folder (sd:/mame/) for a file called errors.txt. If it says something about failing to allocate space, then odds are the ROM can't run on the Wii. The emulator might also crash outright and leave you with a code dump if RAM runs out.
Because the Wii is not a strong console, some games will be slow. Frameskipping is enabled by default to make games playable.
On older TVs, the edges of the screen can be cut off. To fix this, in mame.ini, look for the option "safearea" and set the value to something around 0.8 and 0.95. It will vary depending on your TV.
Changelog
1.0 - December 13, 2011
Rewritten frontend code entirely, no longer uses SDL.
Added better joystick support; Gamecube joystick works!

How do you play your new selection of Game Boy Advance games from the 3DS Ambassador promotion in their original native resolution?Booting the games up normally will stretch them slightly to better fit the 3DS handheld's top screen. But pressing the Start and Select buttons when loading the software will display the titles in their native resolution. It makes the games display in a much smaller window, but the graphics are sharper.Game Boy and Game Boy Color games also get a nice retro-themed border.Playing them in the standard upscaled mode causes graphics to become slightly pixelated, with an added blur effect sometimes noticeable to smooth this.Nintendo's impressive offering of ten top GBA titles went live today for 3DS Ambassadors.

Though we remain disappointed in the dearth of proper 3DS ambassador games -- perhaps one where you solve a gruesome series of murders at an embassy -- Nintendo has at least completed its rewards program for early adopters of the system. The ten free Gameboy Advance games are now available to everyone who connected to the Nintendo eShop before August 12th.
Your portable rewards include: Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare Inc. Mega Microgames, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Wario Land 4, Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, and F-Zero: Maximum Velocity.
To download the games, sign into the eShop, visit the "Settings" page and pull up your download history. Your 3DS will be under the impression that you've already downloaded them, but just go with it and start re-downloading.

While Bethesda scrambles to control unforeseen events born from thousands of characters, objects and dragons interacting with each other in the sprawling land of Skyrim, Nintendo addresses a game-breaking error that occurs if you complete one of three quests in the wrong order ... and then talk to a guy twice.
"If you are experiencing this situation, we are able to repair your saved data," Nintendo writes on its support page for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. If you couldn't avoid triggering the bug (here's how), you can now send in your save file to be repaired. The company also intends to release "a program that will repair save data for those who have their Wii connected to the Internet." That sounds almost like a patch, filtered for technical terminology, but Nintendo only refers to it as a "program." (Aside: The mythical Wii game patch does exist in some cases!)
We'll let you know as soon as we hear more about this restorative download. If, in the meantime, you feel paranoid about Link's bugs, you can keep up to two duplicates of your save file -- just select "copy" from the main menu every now and then.

Other than wine, cheese and overwhelming apathy, the Louvre stands alone as France's most prized national treasure. It's enormous, it's teeming with art, and it's really old. Starting in March, though, the museum will get an infusion of comparatively new technology, thanks to the Nintendo 3DS. As the AFPreports, Nintendo has agreed to provide the Louvre with some 5,000 pocket consoles, to be offered as digital tour guides for museum patrons. With these devices tucked securely inside their fanny packs, wandering tourists will be able to pinpoint their location within the museum, select themed itineraries, and listen to audio commentary available in seven different languages. The consoles will eventually replace the museum's more traditional audio guides, as part of a wider campaign to bring 21st century technology to the Louvre's 12th century confines. "We are the first museum in the world to do this," Agnes Alfandari, the Louvre's head of multimedia, told the AFP, adding that a slate of dedicated smartphone and tablet apps is also in the works.

If your home is already full to bursting with Mario paraphernalia, you'll be delighted to learn that you can exchange your Club Nintendo Coins for downloadable games. Nintendo is featuring a rotating selection of WiiWare, Virtual Console, DSiWare, and eShop downloads offered on the North American Club Nintendo site.
Through January 10, your choices include Super Mario Kart (100 Coins), 3D Classics: Xevious (100 Coins), Fluidity (150 Coins), and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again (150 Coins). In a way, this is really cheap as it trades illusory fun money for games -- but in another way, it's outrageously expensive as said fun money is only acquired through the for-real purchase of multiple games.
Those of you with more space for swag have new reward options as well: three different, adorableMarionotebooks, and a Zelda poster set.

A relatively obscure sequel to a very popular NES game appears on the 3DS eShop this week: Sunsoft's Blaster Master: Enemy Below for Game Boy Color. It's time to return to the world of upside-down space trucks and floating cyborg head things.
WiiWare offers a new Carmen Sandiego game (what?) about math (what?) and DSiWare shows it is possible to offer a retail DS game as a download -- though that functionality has so far been almost the exclusive domain of tiny publishers. For example, today we have Elite Forces: Unit 77 from Gammick Entertainment, and a game in the spirit of a retail DS release: a new sequel to 2007's WordJong.

December 16th, 2011, 02:10 Posted By: wraggster
Last Thursday was the perfect storm in a teacup for games websites.
For a few moments, mere minutes really, Shigeru Miyamoto – creative genius behind almost everything that Nintendo is known for in the modern world – was calling time on an enviable career.
Wired declared he was ‘stepping down’ and quoted him as “retiring from [his] current position” to help “younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself.”
It’s a fairly transparent comment. But as Nintendo’s share price wobbled, investors panicking that the 59-year-old millionaire father of Mario was boning up on the rules of bridge rather than the rules of Mario Party, the format-holder said all was not as it seemed.
Quickly, a riposte came. Wordy, and repetitive, it wanted to be clear: Miyamoto ain’t going nowhere. Wired “misunderstood”.
“Video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto’s role at Nintendo is not changing. He will continue to be a driving force in Nintendo’s development efforts. In discussing his priorities at Nintendo in a media interview, Mr. Miyamoto explained how he is encouraging the younger developers at the company to take more initiative and responsibility for developing software. He attempted to convey his priorities moving forward, inclusive of overseeing all video game development and ensuring the quality of all products. Mr. Miyamoto also discussed his desire to pursue fresh ideas and experiences of the kind that sparked his initial interest in video games.”
In isolation, it was a confused lost-in-translation moment, a bit of a PR mess, but the usual immature he-said-she-said-oh-no-wait-they-didn’t that online games news is structured around.
But let’s forget what Miyamoto ‘didn’t’ say. Let’s focus on what everyone is choosing not to say.
And it’s this: perhaps it really is time for the most revered game developer of all to call it a day.
THE ULTIMATE LEGACY
I say this, of course, with all due respect.
Miyamoto is a true games hero. He led the creation of Mario, Zelda and countless other staple franchises that are cross-generational, and cross-audience.
He shaped the design of most Nintendo games hardware.
He is a key exec inside that business.
But the brouhaha tied into the mere suggestion he could retire raises questions about new talent in games that companies like Nintendo should address – not just for the health of the industry, but their own health, and their own reputation.
Much of the worry about Miyamoto retiring is to do with status. If he goes, it suggests weakness for Nintendo. It implies the next Mario, Mario Kart or Zelda, or even the next Nintendo console, will simply not be as good without him around.
To a sensible mind, of course, this is total bollocks. Nintendo is not one man. Miyamoto is not the only exec there. It is a company staffed by almost 5,000. It can surely survive the decreased involvement of one individual.
But sense rarely comes into it on topics like this. So Nintendo and Miyamoto must maintain that he’s going nowhere. If they could reasonably imply he was immortal and that his golden touch will inform games into perpetuity, they would. (In seriousness, as an aside, it must be horribly difficult for him at this juncture – although faced with having to oversee Mario Kart 8 or the 17th Zelda, it's clear that under no circumstances can he suggest he ever will eventually retire.)
Nintendo insists, then, that Miyamoto is a “driving force in Nintendo’s development efforts”. He is also “encouraging younger developers to take more initiative”, he “oversees all video game development” and “ensures the quality of all products” – and at the same time has a “desire to pursue fresh ideas”.
That’s an impossible, contradictory role. Unless Nintendo’s next console eliminates the need to sleep or have a life.
It’s time for Nintendo Japan’s most senior worrywarts and its itchyfeet shareholders to accept that Miyamoto is mortal like the rest of us, and be ready to talk about the next generation of games designers.
Nintendo’s corporate line might not agree, but I do – Miyamoto said it himself: “unless I say that I’m retiring, I cannot nurture the young developers”.
THE NEXT GENERATION
The entire situation only rams home that the games industry is at a very crucial crossroads.
The businesses trying to build the games industry further desperately need more talent to come in. Our schools aren’t good enough. ‘Games’ degrees don’t cut it half the time. Barriers exist for many with the passion, but no direction. Most teams consist of men – women still make up just a paltry 10 per cent of the global workforce for the entire industry. Something has to change. And there’s a chance for big companies like Nintendo to contribute serious change.
Dream scenario: Nintendo starts actively hiring would-be dev talent around the world, or at least promoting a more accessible download store and publishing scheme to encourage that audience to grow. Leaflets inserted with Nintendo games promote this, making the concept of being a games creator a mass-market one. Much like how Nintendo made the concept of being a gamer mass market with the Wii and DS.
Miyamoto can travel the world talking about how this new scheme works, how he works, and engage with the students and developers that would be desperate to be in the same room as him.
He can retain his status as Nintendo ambassador, but also book that cruise, take that holiday, work on that download game on his own. Most importantly, though, it maintains his reputation without removing his status. He gets to retire, without handing in his notice.
Because whether it was him travelling the world, or just focusing solely on engaging new talent within the Nintendo HQ, people would listen. They already hang off his every word.
And, really, I can’t think of anyone more respected, or more talented, than Miyamoto to actually bring to light and potentially fix the worrying fact that we don’t know where the next generation of Miyamotos might come from.

Nintendo's 3DS has outperformed the company's previous platforms in Australia.
The handheld has sold more than 200,000 units in its first 37 weeks, setting a new sales record for the region.
It has not only surpassed the early sales of other handhelds, but even home consoles, according to CVG.
As with other markets, 3DS got off to a slow start Down Under but the global price cut and release of titles such as Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 has reversed the device's fortunes.

Nintendo has teamed up with the Eurosport Group to create 3D video content for its newest handheld.
A dedicated Eurosport video player application is now available free of charge from the Nintendo eShop. Once installed, the app automatically downloads the latest videos via SpotPass.
The initial wave of videos will be two to three-minute clips from popular Eurosport show WATTS, which takes a lighter look at the world of sport and features sporting outtakes.
"We are always striving to bring fun and exciting new content to our fans and this new partnership with Eurosport will do just that," said Nintendo of Europe's marketing and PR managing director.
"We are looking forward to launching the WATTS videos each week along with a host of other 3D content on Nintendo Video from our various partners."
Eurosport's global communications director Heather Bowler added: "The 3D clips from WATTS, one of Eurosport's most established programmes, are guaranteed to engage and entertain Nintendo 3DS users.
"Eurosport and Nintendo are both leaders within their industries so there is a natural brand fit with the collaboration, which will extend our reach within an important target audience."
Nintendo also has partnerships with Aardman Animations, the Berliner Philharmoniker Orchestra and Red Bull Media House to provide content for its own Nintendo Video app.

Nintendo Of Japan is offering a fix for the game-breaking bug found in Wii RPG The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
As we reported last week, the bug is triggered when parts of the Song Of The Hero quest are completed in a certain order.Nintendo's initial response was to explain how to avoid the bug, and say it was "documenting all feedback." But now, Andriasang reports, the company is going further.
For those with an internet connection, Nintendo will "distribute a program." Whether this will be a patch to remove the bug from the game entirely, or a standalone piece of software to fix affected save files, is not made clear. Wii patches are rare; Nintendo has never updated one of its own games, but Activision has done so with recent entries in the Call Of Duty series.
Those whose Wiis are not connected to the internet will be able to send in their SD card, or even their Wii console, for Nintendo to fix itself.

Australian retailer EB Games has listed a speculative price for the Wii U.
What would you pay?If you search the internet for a price on the Nintendo Wii U and come across the EB Games website, save your internet rants for another day, because nothing is confirmed.EB Games have listed the Wii U at a price of $598. After contacting the Media Manager of EB, CVG was informed the price given to the product is in fact "an estimated price which [EB] provide for all products where price has not yet been confirmed by the vendor."
That means $598 is a price that EB has given for what they *expect* the Wii U to be worth. Nintendo has neither provided a price, nor confirmed this as an Australian RRP for the console, which is expected to be released in 2012.
The Wii launched in Australia with a RRP of $399.95. The Wii U is definitely an advancement on the Wii, with new features and rumoured CPU specs to match the Xbox 360 - but at what cost? That's for Nintendo to decide.
Is retailer guesswork misleading? Would you pay $600 for a Wii U? Let us know in the comments section below.

Nintendo of America has officially launched the "overhauled" Club Nintendo rewards website.
As internet hawks had spotted when the revamped site went live prematurely last week, Nintendo has made it possible for Club Nintendo users to trade in Coins for downloadble games for Wii, DSi and 3DS.Current games available include Super Mario Kart (Wii VC, 100 Coins), Fluidity (WiiWare, 150 Coins), Xevious (3DS 3D Classics, 100 Coins) and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again (3DS eShop, 150 Coins).
Nintendo says this selection will be swapped for new titles on January 10, selected based on consumer feedback.
The site has also been given "a fun new look" and "new Coin-earning opportunities", plus "new Rewards, including Nintendo-themed notebooks and pen cases, plus a set of limited-edition posters honoring the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda". You're also now able to register third-party games for Coins.
Club Nintendo lets users tap in codes on leaflets that come with (previously first-party only) Wii, DS and 3DS games to redeem Coins, which can be exchanged for rewards on the site.

The full transcript of Wired's interview with Shigeru Miyamoto -- in which the industry legend triggered some panic over his future -- has been posted. Surprisingly, that pseudo-retirement news isn't even the juiciest angle; Miyamoto also discussed the company's troubled recent past, as well as its potentially Miyamoto-less future.
He explained that Nintendo's goals this generation have focused on "the expanding of the gaming population," a task which would seemingly put them at odds with the ever-increasing smartphone market. Miyamoto posits that his company isn't "directly competing" with phones; rather, both might just have increased the size of the gaming market, and "expanded the definition of videogames" themselves.
In the more recent past (last week, in fact), Nintendo launched the Retro-developed Mario Kart 7 for 3DS, a project which Miyamoto said succeeded due to its multicultural development approach. "We were able to join forces in order to realize a variety of different courses, a variety of different tastes," he explained. "I think that's one reason how it worked out well between a Japanese development team and a Western development team."
It seems Retro has earned the games industry maven's trust, as Miyamoto added, "As you know, we have already collaborated with Retro for the Metroid Prime series in the past. And I think when we talk about any other franchise, Zelda might be a possible franchise for that collaboration." We think we speak for everyone when we shout in support of this idea while doing fist pumps into the air. Check out the full interview for more on the future of Zelda, the 3DS, the Wii U and the other pies Miyamoto's got his fingers in.

Admit it: Your flair for fashion, design and symmetry has prevented you from fully appreciating the gold-colored Wii Remote Plus that came bundled with special edition versions of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Hey, we're not judging! Take one look at our wardrobe and you'll know our meticulous approach to color coordination. We're here to tell you there's a solution to your dilemma -- Japanese Club Nintendo members can now spend their hard-earned credits on an equally golden Wii Nunchuck.
The faux-metallic peripheral will run you 600 Points, while the other new addition to the rewards catalog -- a 3DS game case which holds up to 18 titles -- will cost you 150 Points. You can check out the new Nunchuck in the image posted above; just try not to let the shameful color mismatching get to you. We've contacted Nintendo to see if these new products are coming stateside.
