Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator and producer of the Zelda and Mario franchises among other works, is stepping down at Nintendo. After personally managing Nintendo's blockbuster franchises for ~20 years, Miyamoto said today: 'What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself. Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.'"Update: 12/08 21:35 GMT by T : Note that Nintendo is careful to say that this is not retirement, even if Miyamoto's role at Nintendo changes.

UK shops are reporting a sharp increase in 3DS sales.
Sources on the High Street have told MCV that the Metallic Red edition is all but sold out, with other colours also in short supply.
It follows a surge in popularity for the machine, driven by two new Mario games and a price cut.
Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are both now available – the latter debuted at No.8 in this week's Chart-Track Top 40. Both games have been supported by a significant marketing drive, with TV ads appearing around prime time TV shows.
"We have high expectations for the final few weeks before Christmas," said GAME Group's category manager for Nintendo Iain Johnson.

December 7th, 2011, 23:51 Posted By: wraggster
Zumba Fitness 2 will receive a big post-release push to ensure the title sells strongly in the New Year.
The Wii fitness game from 505 has already received a splash of marketing activity. An X Factor TV ad in late October announced the sequel’s release, while TV spots have been running since around Xtra Factor on ITV2.
Publisher 505 is following this up with support during the semi-final of The X Factor on ITV, which airs this weekend. This will be backed by further ads on satellite and terrestrial TV channels.
Zumba 2 will also appear in must-have Christmas lists in women’s and mainstream publications such as Zest, Look and Woman, and online sites including What Culture and Stick Fingers.
“The high saturation of female programming at this time means the UK’s biggest show [X?Factor] will perfectly complement Zumba’s target audience,” 505’s senior product manager Juliette Green told MCV.
“Social media will also support PR efforts across some of the biggest online sites to further communicate that this video game really is the perfect Christmas stocking present.”
505 will hope Zumba 2 emulates the success of the original game, with a fresh marketing push running into 2012. Zumba Fitness became the top-selling Wii title in the UK this year after topping the weekly GfK Chart-Track Top 40 on 13 occasions.
“We’ve taken key learnings into Zumba 2 and are confident of similar success second time around,” Green added. “The perceived need to get fit after Christmas will also be an important element for our ongoing campaign for Zumba 2, with additional promotional, PR, online and TV support in the New Year and beyond.”

The studio behind the hit Cooking Mama series says 3DS will pick up momentum now kids games are coming.
The firm blames the portable’s early struggles on a lack of software for the younger demographic. But now it says the games are coming – including its own title Cooking Mama 4.
“There hasn’t been many kids games on 3DS as such,” president and CEO of Cooking Mama Limited Takeshi Nagashima told MCV. “In Japan there are more adult games than kids’ ones. The hardware price was also horrendously expensive. But the software was not built for the kids market.“
However, the prices have come down, and Nintendo is coming up with the software as well. We expect 3DS’ market share will start to expand accordingly.”
Nagashima’s comments came as 3DS sales have started to spike on the back of Super Mario 3D Land. The Nintendo game’s release caused a surge in sales in Japan and the US. 3DS console sales rose 49 per cent in the US following the release of Mario 3D Land and spiked again over Black Friday.
There’s still another blockbuster to come for 3DS, in the form of Mario Kart 7, which reaches UK shelves today (December 2nd).

Nintendo has acknowledged the existence of a game-breaking bug in The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
According to Zelda Informer, the company has acknowledged that completing parts of the Song Of The Hero quest in a certain order means the other parts don't trigger as normal.
"We have been made aware of the issue that results in being unable to progress in the Song Of The Hero quest," reads an email Nintendo is sending to users who have notified them of the bug. "If the game has been saved after completing the sequence of events, it will no longer be possible to proceed through the game on that save file.
"The only options at that point are to either start the game over or to use an earlier save file to continue. The situation is caused by performing the following sequence of events:- At the beginning of the quest, go to Lanayru Desert to retrieve the song of the Thunder Dragon.
- In the Lanayru Mine, speak with Golo The Goron.
- Complete the Thunder Dragon's event, and receive his song.
- Before heading to the forest or volcano regions, speaking with Golo in the mine again.
- At this point, the forest and volcano events will no longer occur, making it impossible to continue."
There's no other fix available - you'll just have to make sure you complete the quest in a different order, or use multiple save files. Nintendo does, however, say it is "documenting all feedback."

The Amazing Spider-Man will tie in with the release of the eponymous film series reboot next July and return the web-slinger to a free to roam New York City.

Handheld raises its game with strong sales rush ahead of holiday season
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata believes the 3DS is about to cross the 3m sales mark in Japan and will reach a 4m milestone by April.
Speaking to Nikkei, as translated by Andriasang, Iwata (pictured) said the 3DS “has regained its vigour” thanks to the price drop and major new releases such as Mario Kart 7 hitting shelves.
The racer sold 420,000 units in its first week in Japan – double that of the DS version.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently held a state of the union with Japanese newspaper Nikkei (via Andriasang) for the company's performance in its home country. Mario Kart 7, which launched on December 1, has done quite well. In its first week on retail shelves, the game sold a whopping 420,000 copies, almost double the first-week performance sales of Mario Kart DS back in 2005. And, according to Iwata, the game did even better abroad, though we kinda already knew that.
Despite suffering through a lackluster launch, Nintendo's latest handheld is set to reach the three million sold mark two weeks faster than the original DS did, Iwata said. Thanks, price cut! He expects the 3DS to hit four million before its one year anniversary on February 26.

Maybe you want to give a new 3DS owner a headstart on filling out their collection. Or maybe you want to justify your own continued Wii ownership. Whatever the reason, you can be sure a ton of holiday shopping will include games and accessories for Nintendo platforms.
Allow us to help you guide your shopping, so that you don't enter the store in a fugue state and come out with 12 copies of Food Network: Cook or be Cooked. We'll help you find the best stuff from the last year. Just click the links below to jump to the section of your choice, or head past the break for everything.
3DS
Super Mario 3D Land ($39.96)
If you're a Mario player from way back, this will feel both familiar and new to you. It's a clever blend of 3D Mario design and perspective with 2D Mario-style stage layouts. It's also wonderful for bite-sized play sessions.
Mario Kart 7 ($39.99)
Everybody likes Mario Kart. You like Mario Kart. Even if you hate Mario Kart, you'll get hooked on it. This one has some nice online play, allowing you to lose to all your friends even when they aren't within taunting distance.
Cave Story 3D ($39.99)
This version of the classic Cave Story is ideal for people who don't identify as "retro" gamers, as it has fancy new graphics that disguise it as a new game. It's also great for people who want to see a familiar game in a new way. The important thing is that every single person should have a copy of Cave Story.
Bit Trip Saga ($39.95, currently eligible for buy one, get one half off)
Also in the "everyone should own" department: a collection of Gaijin Games' inventive, beautiful, rhythm explorations of the evolution of games. It's ... entirely likely you or your gift recipient failed to get these on WiiWare, so here they are in a nice portable format!
Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition ($18.58)
If you're able to live without an arcade stick, you'll find a clever port of the industry-standard fighting game here, one that can be played with distant friends anywhere there's a wi-fi signal.
Dead or Alive Dimensions ($25.23)
The single-player mode is loaded with absolutely hilarious, freeze-frame cutscenes. Take that as a plus or minus according to your own preferences. But regardless of that presentation, the story mode in this game is the best fighting game training sequence ever designed.
Pilotwings Resort ($34.98)
A nice, mellow plane or jetpack ride around Nintendo's Wuhu Island is a good way to familiarize yourself with the 3DS. At least, it's mellow until you start getting into the later challenges.
Star Fox 64 3D ($37.99, currently eligible for buy one, get one half off)
Pixeljunk developer Q-Games updated the Nintendo 64 game with new graphics and new gyro controls. And, necessarily, the ability to put the whole thing in your pocket.
Nintendogs + Cats ($32.87 - $34.41)
Cute puppies and kind of cute, kind of uncanny-valley-ish kittens living inside your 3DS. If you're in the "people who like puppies" demographic, this is probably something you'll enjoy in short sessions. If you're not in that demographic, get the hell off of our website, creepo.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D bundle ($199.99)
Look at it! Look at it.
Power Pak+/Charge Base ($14.39/$19.00)
If you ever decide to use your 3DS as, like, a portable system ... out of your house ... you'll probably need one of these. If you have the extra scratch, it's nice to have the Charge Base for drop-in charging, but it's not necessary.
Wii
Pro Pack Mini Plus ($29.96-$40.83)
If you want Skyward Sword, but don't plan to pick up the hardware bundle, why not get one of these smaller Wii Remote Plus controllers? It's a lot more comfortable for the epic journey between the A and +/- buttons.
Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure ($65.98 - infinity)
The Wii was the lead platform on this cute, collectible-laden game, so it's not a bad way to experience it at all. A bad way to experience it, we think, would be anywhere near a child, in a toy store. That would be a bad, expensive way to experience Skylanders.
Donkey Kong Country Returns ($43.99)
Yes, this is from last year, but you didn't buy it, did you? Even if you did, you know somebody who didn't. Buy it.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword ($49.99-$69.99)
What are you doing with a Nintendo system if you aren't even a little interested in Zelda? Or in motion controls? This is a Zelda game, with cool motion controls. And for twenty bucks more (if you can find it) you can get a fancy gold Wii Remote Plus to enhance the experience ... of looking at your hand while playing.
Rayman Origins ($45.98)
A delightful 2D platformer with co-op co-interference that will remind you of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. But with more slapping.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land ($49.99)
It's a simplistic platformer that keeps the player overpowered at all times, but it's also adorable, and perfect as an introduction to Kirby for kiddos.
DS
Dragon Quest 6: Realms of Revelation ($24.80)
Take all the time you have for other games, and spend it recruiting monsters, leveling up in a variety of jobs, and traveling between a dream world and the "real" Zenithia.
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 ($34.99)
Oh, your favorite part of DQ6 was the monster collecting? Well, how about a whole game about recruiting and training Slimes, Drackies, and other monsters from the RPG series? It's a Pokemon-type adventure in which you can capture, train, and even combine 300 monsters.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($14.11)
Combining unique puzzle mechanics and an unmatchedly odd story, Ghost Trick is an experience like no other. We can't seem to say anything about it that doesn't reference its singular nature. And sadly, given the sales, it'll likely remain singular.
Solatorobo: Red the Hunter ($33.30)
Developer CyberConnect2 indirectly recalls Mega Man Legends and directly recalls its own Tail Concerto with a classic action-RPG adventure. As adventurer Red Savarin, you go from floating island to floating island, taking on any quest you and your bipedal robot can complete.
Professor Layton and the Last Specter ($29.99)
It's a pretty safe bet as to whether you'll like this: if you a) liked any previous Layton game, or b) like puzzles even a little, you'll like Last Specter. As a nice bonus, once you've completed the atmospheric puzzle adventure (or while you're playing it), you have the London Life RPG to get lost in.
Aliens: Infestation ($29.99, currently eligible for buy one, get one half off)
Meet a bunch of newly invented Colonial Marines as you attempt (and mostly fail) to survive against xenomorphs, robots, and other threats aboard the Sulaco. It's equally great for Aliens fans and people who love a good Metroidvania.
Kirby Mass Attack ($29.99, currently eligible for buy one, get one half off)
This is the kind of bizarre experiment we've come to expect from Kirby -- a side-scrolling action RTS in which you control ten adorable puffballs at once.
Domo Starter Kit for DSi ($24.46)
Your DSi doesn't look like Domo-kun? What's that about?

I just updated my 3DS, and other users are reporting that they've been asked to do so as well. This is the delayed "November update" meant to add DLC capabilities, 3D video recording, and more.
Looking around my system, I see a new "Nintendo Zone" app for interfacing with "participating locations," to receive special content from certain free wi-fi hotspots. The "3DS Camera" app now has a toggle for video or stills, and -- most unexpected of all -- there are new "accomplishments" (achievements, kind of) in the StreetPass Mii Plaza. A few popped up immediately upon starting the app (above). You can see them all in a list within the Mii Plaza. I have 20 total (!) relating to the number and location of the people I've met.
Other new stuff in the StreetPass Mii Plaza includes a music player for Mii Plaza music, new Find Mii stuff (Find Mii 2 game and lots of new hats, accessible only to those who have all the hats from the first game), new Puzzle Swap puzzles, and even some kind of new SpotPass connectivity, to bring Miis into your Plaza from the internet. I'm not sure how this works yet.
Though the eShop was down all day in preparation for this update, I didn't see anything new there yet -- except for a news item about the 3D video update.

And here we thought Nintendo commissioned the real-life Mario Kart kart just so its existence could perpetually tease us forever. In fact the real reason is so some lucky person out there could own this thing; a GameStop patron to be exact.
The kart will be given to a select PowerUp Rewards member. Eligible members simply need to purchase or trade something in during the month of December to be entered into the drawing, either in-store or online. Good luck, because nothing really ties the living room together like a giant, life-sized Mario Kartprop.
... What? You would put it in the garage? Psh.

A brand new version of the SNES MYTH MENU has been released which includes 2 major updates : Original cart rom & sram dumping directly to the SD card by just plugging your cart into the back of the SNES Myth!
Full release changelog- Cart dumping support. You can dump the contents of the bootcart (the one that you plug into the back of the SNES Myth) to the SD card. I've verified that it works for ROM, and should hopefully work for SRAM as well. (See the readme for more info, because you need to put some files on the SD card for this to work.)
- Added key-repeat. If you hold up/down for about half a second it will start repeating keypresses until you release the button.
- Modified the timing in the VGM player a bit.

Glitch64 SVN r270 is released. GlideHQ is a realtime texture enhancer library with hi-resolution texture pack support for Glide64. Glitch64 is the recommended Glide3x wrapper for Glide64, the Glide video plugin for N64 emulators. It currently supports S3TC texture compression, anisotropic filtering, widescreen resolutions and simulates almost all the Glide3x hardware capabilities used by the plugin, included texture buffer capability (needed for render to texture). It is coded using the OpenGL API and uses GLSL shaders.
Traditional and non-traditional techniques have been used to achieve speed and high image quality even on a 9 year old 3Dfx Voodoo2. Although the 3Dfx Glide3x texture format naming conventions are used, the library can be expanded for generic use. The library supports 6 enhancers and 6 image filters. FXT1 and S3TC texture compression are supported.

Fceux SVN r2365 is released. FCEUX is a cross platform, NTSC and PAL Famicom/NES emulator that is an evolution of the original FCE Ultra emulator. Over time FCE Ultra had separated into many separate branches. The concept behind FCEUX is to merge elements from FCE Ultra, FCEU rerecording, FCEUXD, FCEUXDSP, and FCEU-mm into a single branch of FCEU. As the X implies, it is an all-encompassing FCEU emulator that gives the best of all worlds for the general player, the ROM-hacking community, and the Tool-Assisted Speedrun Community.
Fceux SVN changelog:
r2363
fceux-server: fix build errors for BSD
r2364
fceux-server: switch to unix endlines
r2365
* Tasedit: branches autofind best parent
* Tasedit: better hotchanges gradient
* Tasedit: "Set Marker"/"Remove marker" in context menu
* Tasedit: checking clipboard at selection.init() and retrieving info
