You'll know by now how slavishly addicted we are to Pro Evo Soccer, rating it the finest footy game to ever grace a PC or console. Entire lunchtimes, days and even weekends have been sacrificed on the altar of PES as we strive to give it the full 110 percent.
The recent announcement of PES - or Winning Eleven as its known over in the East - for the Nintendo DS has had us all a flutter like the rabid footy addicts we are, as we speculated wildly on how PES might look on the dual-screen device. Even more importantly though, how it might use the handheld's innovative touch screen controls to further our footy future.
We still can't quite tell you that latter component, but we can provide you with a glimpse of what Winning Eleven DS will look actually look like, with first-ever shots emerging following Nintendo's recent DS Lite presentation. Even though they're rather small, you can see the play area's already looking great and it seems the lower screen will be reserved for cunning tactical changes.
No further details for the moment, other than the fact it will use Nintendo's Wi-fi Connection service for some splendid online antics. Still that should more than whet your appetites for the DS footy delights to come. More PES DS kicking off - we hope - soon!

February 17th, 2006, 17:48 Posted By: wraggster
It’s been a week when the games industry has been forced to stand up for itself. Firstly it was Atari hitting back at the Australian government’s decision to ban Marc Ecko's Getting Up, after claims that the game incited anti-social behaviour. And now it's Nintendo, coming under fire from none other than America’s ABC news, who made some rather outrageous (not to mention totally false) claims about how the DS is a potential threat to children and a grooming tool for kiddy fiddlers.
The furore kicked off on Tuesday night when ABC news claimed that they had made an "alarming discovery" and that they had "...an important warning for parents…. Action News has learned this popular gaming system [the DS] could put kids in harm's way."
The news was in response to Nintendo’s announcement earlier in the week that it now has had more than 850,000 users logging onto their WiFi Internet service since its launch last November.
According to ABC news, a concerned parent was horrified when she found that her 11 year-old daughter was receiving offensive messages over Pictochat from a stranger.
ABC also quoted Keith Dunn, an Internet Safety Expert, who said: "Predators are using Nintendo DS anywhere in the world. And it's going to be really hard to track down those individuals because of course, they're on a wireless network from a hotspot such as a coffee shop. Or if they're in a wireless environment, say a coffee shop or whatever, they jump on the wireless network so now you have predators who are trying to get at our kids."
Mr. Dunn went on to say that parents need to teach their children to apply 'stranger danger' rules to every and any situation. "Don't talk to strangers in game rooms if you don't know they're your friends. Don't talk to anyone. Just stop talking. Stop chatting in the game room." Now this all smells to SPOnG like - well, how should we put it - like a massive pile of cooked-up horseshit.
ABC news is simply trying to cook up a bit of a moral panic storm, but has unfortunately not fully checked the facts. If the 11-year-old girl in question was being pursued over pictochat, then it was not over a WiFi Internet connection, but it was from another DS user within 65 feet. Which is of course still worrying if it happened, but is not the same as being anonymously stalked over the Internet as the story suggests.
In response to the story, a Nintendo UK spokesperson told SPOnG yesterday that the company’s line was: "Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection service is a safe environment for players. The service will allow Nintendo DS gamers in the UK to link up with users across the country, and even the world, to compete against each other. Players have the option to select to play with just friends, or people of a similar skill level around the world without fear of harassment. Players do not have direct communication with each other when playing and therefore personal details or inappropriate comments cannot be exchanged."
The spokesperson went on to tell us the company's line on Pictochat and children's safety, which is this: "Nintendo takes the issue of children receiving messages from strangers very seriously. Children should be warned about receiving messages from, or communicating with, strangers through any medium. For this reason a warning and detailed privacy information are clearly highlighted in the Nintendo DS instruction booklet.
Nintendo also recommends that an adult should assist children with the system set up and instruct them not to use personal information and not to meet strangers or give personal information to anyone as it could be read by a stranger.
It should be noted that PictoChat does not connect to the internet. PictoChat can only be used to communicate with another Nintendo DS within the range of the Nintendo DS's wireless signal, which is approximately 65ft."
These are the facts. Make of them what you will.
If SPOnG's kids were getting funny messages over Pictochat, here's what we would do. We would look around us to try to see who else had a DS within a 65 feet radius. If we saw them, and successfully identified that they had been sending offensive messages to our child, we would batter them with a hammer. Or any heavy object we had to hand. If we couldn't see them we would remove the DS from our child's hands until we had left said area, and report the matter to the authorities. Seems fairly straightforward to us.

As details trickle in as to the full extent of Nintendo's browser plans for its increasingly-essential DS portable, fresh information on the technology underpinning the Internet software is starting to trickle out.
To enable a smooth web experience, the DS will receive a RAM upgrade, via the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot. The add-on will be bundled with the Opera browser DS cart, the whole package costing just a shade under 20 quid in Japan. No US or European announcement regarding the surfing software has yet surfaced, though something is expected within the next fortnight.
Nintendo has not disclosed how beefy the injection of RAM will be for the DS, nor has it opted to comment on possible future applications for the memory upgrade. Speculation is rife the the DS will follow in the footsteps of the Nintendo 64, which successfully deployed a RAM upgrade used in games including Perfect Dark, Zelda: Majora's Mask, Turok 2 and Banjo Tooie, though Nintendo declined to comment on the possibility at time of press.

Majesco and Backbone give robot-heavy franchise 20 types of vehicles, wireless play, and a new story on Nintendo's portable.
Piloting giant walking robots in combat requires years of training, lightning-quick reflexes, and nerves of steel. But in gamers' cases, it'll just require ample control of a DS stylus. Details have been released about MechAssault: Phantom War, which makes its way to the DS later this year.
The third-person shooter is currently in development by Backbone Entertainment, a division of Foundation 9 Entertainment. The top screen will show the traditional third-person view of the action, and the bottom screen will show the inside of the combat, complete with BattleMech controls. Using the stylus, gamers will be able to hack Mechs, eject themselves, and switch weapons.
The single-player mode features 24 campaigns spanning four planets, and wireless multiplayer allows up to four players to compete in three different modes. Twenty types of vehicles will be included in the game, such as BattleMechs, tanks, and BattleArmor.
Rating and pricing information has not been announced for MechAssault: Phantom War.

February 16th, 2006, 17:21 Posted By: wraggster
The Japanese software charts are littered with new releases this week, although the almost total market dominance of the Nintendo DS remains unchecked - with the titles for the handheld accounting for more than half of the all-formats top ten.
In all, 20 new releases made their debut in the top 100, generating 62.82 per cent of overall software sales. Sony's PlayStation 2 was the only other platform to feature alongside the DS in the top ten, with four titles including this week's number one.
Series spin-off Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII claimed the top spot for Square-Enix, racking up sales of 392,000 units, while Capcom's Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams achieved sales in excess of 100,000 units, taking third place in the all-formats top ten.
Banpresto's RPG title, Ar Tonelico, sits in seventh place, and the only remaining PS2 title is Konami's Winning Eleven 9 bonus pack, which scraped in at number ten. As in previous weeks, the remainder of the chart belongs solely to the DS, the only noticeable decline in sales coming from Animal Crossing: Wild World (previously shifting in excess of a million units in the first fortnight on sale) which slipped from two to five, and Mario Kart DS, which dropped four places from five to nine.
Nintendo's efforts to diversify the content for its handheld and include educational elements doesn't appear to have affected sales in the slightest, as English Training DS jumps into second place with sales of approximately 240,000 units.
Brain Age 2 and Brain Age continue the trend, both titles performing well at retail and resting in the charts in fourth and sixth place respectively. SEGA's Bleach DS completes the strong performance for the device, entering the charts at number eight.
Sales of the DS and the plethora of innovative and original software titles have been considerably increased thanks to the availability of connected gaming via Wi-Fi hotspots in locations such as cafes, pubs and transport stations. Almost 50 per cent of US users took advantage of the online service in its first week of availability, and the service currently boasts over 3 million users worldwide.

Big News article from Lik Sang
Nintendo held a DS conference yesterday where a couple of noticeable good things were talked about. The Nintendo DS Lite was on display and did of course steal the show, but there were many other topics that are of interest! Before digging into them, let's keep our attention a bit on the Lite, as we have received videos from our friends at GameTrailers of the TV commercial that is currently getting rolled for the promotional campaign over Japan:
Hit Games to Come
The first ever screenshots of Winning Eleven DS were revealed by Konami, which, software wise, was certainly the highlight of the show. The quality of graphics seems to be close to what the series was on PlayStation, and that's one title soccer fanatics for sure are waiting for with high expectations. Other software titles that gathered quite a bit of attention on the showfloor were Super Robot Wars DS, Shin Sangoku Musou DS, Mario Basket 3 on 3, Final Fantasy III, Gyakuten Saiban 4, Tales of the Tempest, A.S.H. and the next Tamagotchi. It's been a good week on the Nintendo DS software front of things, as, already earlier this week, Metroid Prime Hunters Voice Chat feature was unveiled, while we received a release date (May 2006), new movies and new screenshots of Mario Bros DS (all this, and more, is covered in details in our latest Weekly Gaming Update)!

Nintendo DS Internet Browser
Nintendo has teamed up with Opera to deliver Nintendo DS users with an Internet browser. You'll be able to surf the world wide web on the go, using the Wi-Fi connection, thanks to a software cartridge from Opera. The cart will retail for 3800 Yen in Japan, which approximately converts to US$ 32. It's coming out in Japan in June 2006. There is no firm release date announced yet for the western world, but there is no doubt that this product will have the international market on target sooner or later.

Nintendo DS TV Tuner
Codenamed "1-Seg" or "1-Segment", the TV Tuner kit for Nintendo DS has also been confirmed and the final design has been revealed. Much less bulky and much simpler than what was shown on the initial picture a year ago, the TV Tuner now comes under the form of software cartridge to which a receiving antenna has been attached. Light and slim, as we all like it with handheld add-ons. You can select channels on the touchscreen, while you're watching shows on the main panel. Release date has to be fully confirmed but rumors are mentioning April 2006 as the aimed launch window. Final Yen price is unknown at press time.
