Over 850,000 unique users have connected to Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection online gaming service for the Nintendo DS handheld since it launched in November, the company has announced, with over 20 million total connections registered.
The service, which is supported by titles including Mario Kart DS and Tony Hawk's American Sk8land, is provided for free and allows users to connect wirelessly either at home, or at a variety of public hot-spots.
According to Nintendo, there are now more than 20,000 of those hot-spots spread around Europe, thanks to deals with companies including BT Openzone (Britain), Telefonica (Spain), Meteor (France), T-Mobile (Netherlands) and The Cloud (Britain and Scandinavia).
"Our aim is to provide a free Wi-Fi service that is simple to use and accessible to everyone," according to Nintendo of Europe's new marketing director, Laurent Fischer. "We have over 20,000 free Nintendo Wi-Fi hotspots in place across Europe, ranging from airports, coffee shops, bars and hotels, and already over 850,000 people globally are using our service."
More major titles supporting Wi-Fi Connection are on the horizon, including Animal Crossing: Wild World, which was Japan's biggest-selling game last year and appears in Europe on March 31st, and Metroid Prime Hunters, which launches on May 5th and will be the first game to support voice chat over the service. Ubisoft's LOSTMAGIC title is set to be the first RPG to support the service, later this spring.
Wi-Fi Connection isn't just limited to the Nintendo DS, however; the service will also be used by the Nintendo Revolution console when it launches later this year, with Nintendo undoubtedly hoping that the fact that many DS owners will have configured their home networks for the service already will ease the process of bringing the new console online.
The potential spanner in the works, in the UK at least, is the continuing poor availability of Nintendo's own Wi-Fi USB adapter. The adapter is designed to allow people without their own wireless networks to create a simple network correctly configured for the DS, but many major retailers are not carrying the unit at present.

Success HK have posted that the US version of Resident Evil: Deadly Silence is now out:

A remake of the first Resident Evil game with the DS's unique feature set in mind as you work your way through the now classic storyline involving Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield and that well-known mansion that introduced the world to Resident Evil back in 1996. Zombies are now smarter and actually work their way around doors as they chase after you. You'll find that there's no solace in a room that you think you've completely freed from zombie infestation.
Whereas the original game focused more on puzzle solving, the new version's "rebirth mode" design places a heavy emphasis on action with more enemies and ammo. Also, nearly half the puzzles have been freshly upgraded providing new challenges for fans. The DS's special features are being put to use in the remake as well, as you use the touchpad to solve puzzles and slash at zombies. Also featured are 2-4 player wireless mode (in Co-Op and VS challenges).

The Nintendo DS was the top-selling gaming console of 2005 in Japan with over 4 million units being sold. But a game system without games is just a fancy paperweight, so it's no surprise that DS software flew off the shelves, too. A report in the latest issue of Famitsu, however, reveals that DS games sold so well, the handheld managed to knock off the once untouchable reigning champion of consoles.
Boosted by four of the top five selling titles in Japan, DS games outsold PlayStation 2 games during 2005. Over the previous two years, more than half of the games sold in Japan were for Sony's system. PS2 games accounted for 55.4 percent of game sales in 2003 and 57.1 percent in 2004. But the picture changed in 2005 as DS games accounted for 41.4 percent of game sales in the country, and the PS2's share fell to 36.2 percent.
The DS had three games that sold one million copies or more in Japan in 2005. The PlayStation 2, on the other hand, had only one title sell more than a million copies last year, Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts II.
The good news continues to roll for the DS, as the recently announced DS Lite redesign appears to have captured the public's interest in Japan. According to a survey taken by Famitsu.com, 63.4 percent of those polled are looking forward to the DS Lite, saying that they're impressed with the new look, and they've wanted a brightness control for the handheld. 8.8 percent aren't impressed with the redesign, because they're already satisfied with their current DS, or they think it's just an excuse to raise prices. 27.8 percent stayed neutral with their opinion, saying that they don't think the new model looks too different than before, and they'll need hands-on time to make a decision.
However, "looking forward to" and actually buying are two different things. When asked whether they'll actually buy a DS Lite, 29.3 percent of respondents said they will purchase the handheld, while 34.6 percent said they won't, and 36.1 percent said they aren't sure.

Wintermute has updated his Devkit for the DS, whats new:
Earlier versions of the installer have had problems with checking the version of the ini file which contains the current versions of the packages. This resulted in the internal ini file being used in preference to the downloaded file when copying the installer and associated files to a machine with no internet access and causing the install to fail. Version 1.2.5 attempted to address this issue but a bug was introduced which prevented the installer from downloading a new version of itself. If you use the updater and it doesn't download 1.2.6 then please download this version manually using the link above. Apologies for any inconvenience.

News From Desktopman:
On request from mic I wrote two demos, one for 2d capture to VRAM, and one for FIFO display mode. Capture mode is great for taking screenshots on hardware. Fifo demo also shows how to use the master brightness register, to darken/lighten video output. Use up/down keys to change brightness. If you have a gbamp/compatible Chishm lib device, you can capture directly to a BMP file. Easy to use source in this version:

Here's a trio of images for New Super Mario Bros, the platforming plumber's handheld outing, which show just how the DS touch screen will be used while smashing, stomping and leaping through the nostalgia-tastic 2D levels.
The touch screen works as a scoreboard and inventory, and you can select power-ups with the stylus for instant mushroom energy. There's also a progress bar to flag up Mario and Luigi's position in the level - great for tracking a wireless rival as you race through the levels in multiplayer. We can't wait.
New Super Mario Bros will be released for DS towards the end of the year

Been a pretty solid couple of weeks for news for Nintendo and their DS, which will apparently soon get access to some sweet new features to take advantage of its built in WiFi. Beginning in late March DS owners will be able to pick up game demos, trailers, and content for their DS by coming within proximity of DS kiosks installed in Best Buys and GameStops the nation over (downloaded content gets erased the next time the console is shut down), and fans of Metroid Prime: Hunters will also be getting in-game voice chat for battles on Nintendo's multiplayer network. Now if only Nintendo of America would give us a freaking date for the launch of their DS Lite, which they're obviously to help pimp by introducing these services.
