The Australian Open has once again descended on Melbourne, and tennis fever has gripped the city. Determined not to miss out on the action, Nintendo held its own Wii Tennis tournie last week, and Friday, January 19 was the day of the final. An enthused crowd gathered at Myer to watch four finalists from the week's heats, as well as two of Australia's tennis greats, Pat Cash and Mark Woodforde, strut their virtual stuff in Wii Tennis. If you've completed Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz and desperately need some more spherical action for your Wii, Nintendo might have the answer. It's announced that Hudson's marble-based tilting puzzler Kororinpa is coming to Europe on February 23.
Available from launch in Japan, Kororinpa sees you guiding a series of balls through increasingly complex 3D mazes. You've got complete control over the environments and can even flip them upside down in your mission to reach the goal.
There are 50 stages in total and a host of different balls - each with their own unique attributes. Some are faster, others are more responsive and a couple even look like animals. Kororinpa also supports multiplayer, with one person attached the Wiimote while the other uses the Nunchuck in a race to collect the most gems.
Kororinpa will hit European shelves at the relatively low price of €49 (approximately £34).

Since the Nintendo DS has a built-in microphone and a wireless Internet connection, what's to stop it from being used as a WiFi phone, or the DSphone, if you will?
I've scoured the 'net and found some projects currently underway that claim to do just that, albeit with limitations.
VoiceChatClient is a homebrew application that lets you freely call anyone who also has VoiceChatClient installed on their DS. This hack even adds extra value by transmitting what you write on the touch screen to the other person! VCC requires hacked firmware or some type of passthrough device.
DSpeak has been developed by Nintendo themselves, but aside from a demo at E3 in 2005, nothing more has been heard about this program. DSpeak will reportedly allow in-game and out-of-game chat. And when you speak, an on-screen Mario or Wario avatar lip syncs along!
HelloDS was released some time ago as a proof-of-concept hack, along with a promise of a future version of this homebrew software. Unfortunately, the update has not been forthcoming. The initial version is still available and requires the firmware hack or passthrough.
Metroid Prime: Hunters is currently the most easily accessible option for chatting with your DS buddies. All it requires is the Metroid Prime: Hunters game and a WiFi connection. You might want the NDS VoIP headset too. For this VoIP solution, you just meet the person you want to speak with in the same pre-game lobby and talk. It also works post-game, but not during.
Conclusion: Though this handheld gaming device is certainly capable of competing with other mobile WiFi phones, the current state of Nintendo DS VoIP affairs isn't very exciting. None of the above solutions include support for SIP or for dialing out. However, the demand seems to be out there, so the DS might get to see a true VoIP app yet.

NattyBumppo posted this over at something aweful about his times at Nintendo:
For many, Nintendo is a mystical place out of which fun games and interesting ideas come from time to time. Some people are die-hard fans of the company, following its every move and setting up little shrines to its corporate celebrities, whether virtual (on Geocities) or corporeal (in their bedrooms). Others despise them, usually out of a deep-seated disagreement with their products and advertising, which to many gamers represent much more than mere financial decisions. Either way, Nintendo is a company in which people in this forum have invested a lot of emotions, and I count myself among you in this.
I just spent a year and a half inside the marble edifice that is Nintendo of America, as a programmer and full employee- not a tester, holed up within a partitioned prison, excluded from the company culture- and now that I am leaving the job for other (possibly greener?) pastures, I come to you with the modest gift of the stories I can tell.
I'll try to stay away from anything confidential in this thread, as I still respect Nintendo's privacy quite a bit. I think the company is a great place to work and I have very few, if any, negative things to say about them. But I'll share some interesting things:
---
(This one's probably obvious, but...)
The majority of people at Nintendo who are directly involved with games actually follow gaming news, websites, and forums very closely. (They're gaming geeks too!) They know when people are pissed off by new console colors, or when forums make fun of crappy 3rd-party releases, or when fans make petitions for games they want to get translated. It's not like all of the letters sent to Consumer Service are translated and mailed in a manila envelope to Mr. Iwata, but the company generally recognizes the fans' opinions. Unfortunately for some hardcore fans, most decisions are made for sound, researched financial reasons, and while fans can sway corporate opinions through buying products or by inspiring extensive media coverage, "we loved Kid Icarus make anooooother"-type pathos isn't really an effective arguing tactic, at least in the short term.
---
Pretty much everyone at NOA I talked to about this thinks "Ninty" is the stupidest nickname ever.
---
You know how Reggie Fils-Aimé, Miyamoto-san, and Iwata-san are sort of seen as dynamic, almost fictional characters in the amount of hype and respect they get in Nintendo fan communities? Yeah, well, it's like that for most of the employees too, only we have more stories to tell about them.
---
You'd know this if you've ever been to Redmond, but Nintendo is completely and utterly surrounded by Microsoft. There are Microsoft buildings less than a quarter mile to the north, south, east, and west of the company's HQ. There's just one single, vacant lot to the north of NOA that Nintendo owns and Microsoft's constantly trying to buy, but Nintendo won't budge. I'm convinced it's a secret NOA command outpost.
---
Nintendo is a big company, and while there are lots of people who deal directly with games everyday, such as testers, translators, writers, programmers, and artists, there are plenty of people there who don't work with games, and don't even play games. I met lots of people who didn't know anything about games, and they didn't care: they were there to research patents, or monitor credit accounts for retailers, or think of good benefits for employees, or find cheap flights for business trips. Tons of people don't give a poop about games, and just happen to work for a game company.
However, the Wii's launch changed this, and it was startling. The employee store was swamped with orders from people who never, EVER play games, and I saw people who were obviously getting their feet wet for the very first time diving into gameplaying and talking about how they never knew video games could be fun and easy to play. It was astounding- my first hint, personally, that the Wii might actually hit its marketing demographic.
-----
There are a few stories I would be more than happy to tell if there's any interest, though you'll have to forgive me if I like to tell them in a long-winded fashion and don't type them up immediately, as I like to sleep a lot. Some possible stories might be:
-Nintendo Power's 200th issue anniversary party and the epic trivia contest
-Nintendo company picnics and other amazing things that employees do
-Getting drunk and meeting Mr. Miyamoto, and other E3 2006 debauchery
-The day the Wii name was announced to employees

Remember the guy who claimed to have lost nine pounds from playing Nintendo Wii? That man, Mickey DeLorenzo of Wii Nintendo, was featured on the local NBC news, and the related video has been named the top gaming video on YouTube.
Seeing Delorenzo measure himself was an interesting part of the report, but what got us was the reporter's reaction, which was of utter shock that a video game system was not causing weight gain. Despite that, we still have obligatory Wii puns, including:
"Wii-search" (as in, research)
"A Wii bit of exercise"
"Wii like it."

With the re-re-release of Final Fantasy VI (Originally III in the states) heading for the GBA in a couple of weeks, GameBrink has dug up the original Japanese commercial for the game for our viewing pleasure, featuring a cosplay Terra in her primitive CG Magitek Armor materializing in the middle of a busy street.
Ah yes, the good old days, back before in-game graphics could carry an entire commercial.
FFVI is probably my favorite Final Fantasy game of the series, containing the best cast, the best villain in Kefka, and probably the best ending sequence of any game I've ever played. If you feel the need to have a game sticking rudely out of the bottom of your DS Lite, this is a very good choice.

Evolution is alive and well, and here's proof: the Wii controller strap has now mutated into its third iteration, after the first one was accused of hurting, maiming, and otherwise causing deadly mayhem to innocent users. What's new? The new straps are thicker, longer and have a supposedly more-durable plastic restraint that better helps it cling to your wrist.
In the picture, the new straps with their rounded plastic nubs on the ends are lined up on the left, and the old one whose business end vaguely resembles the Nintendo Wii console is on the right. Get the new ones, butterfingers! Or, you could just hold on tighter to the damn controller. Heck, Babe Ruth never let his bat fly out of his hands, did he? Huh? Just an example.

A Jay And Silent Bob game? That’s the spectacular wish of Clerks II/Dogma creator Kevin Smith – though he won’t be taking direct control. “I’m not really good enough to pull it off,” he claims. “Games is one field in which I like to be entertained, rather than try to be entertaining.” Smith admits he’d be happy to write the back story, but would leave the level design to the experts. “When it comes to levels and bosses and stuff like that, I’m not so good.” Smith famously claims he’s been into videogames since NHL Hockey on the Genesis – a ‘star’ of his movie Mallrats.

A spiky bundle of new shots from Sega's Wii work in progress, Sonic and the Secret Rings, have hot footed it our way and show the intrepid hedgehog making a dash for some precariously placed red rings - could these be the eponymous treasures of the game's title? We think so.
Other images give us another look at the pointy-toothed Jurassic hazards that inhabit a jungle level of Sonic's adventure - it looks like the iconic ring collector uses a high-velocity burst to accelerate away from stampeding triceratops, and is that swirly, monochrome effect with the t-rex the result of a special power?
While this latest flurry of shots have left us guessing, if there's one thing we're absolutely positive of it's that Secret Rings will be way better than Sonic's dire run out on Xbox 360. Fingers crossed.

Man, those Nazi characters are really unpopular, Maybe they should get a publicist or something. We're not up on our history, but we do know Medal of Honor: Vanguard marks the Third Reich's 613th appearance as a video game antagonist (yes, we're including Bionic Commando). And we've got the screenshots to prove almost 30% of that last statement.
Similar to Medal of Honor: Airborne, Vanguard will once again emphasizes the paratroopers, specifically virtual hero Frank Keegan's 82nd Airborn division. The game is set for a March release.

Shigeru Miyamoto will give a keynote speech at the 2007 Game Developers Conference in March dubbed 'A Creative Vision'.
The speech will reveal how a singular creative vision drives his work, not only in terms of the games he's famed for but also in generating technologies such as DS and Wii.
"The Game Developers Conference is a place for developers to learn from one another, and I think it is safe to say that every member of the community has at one time or another fantasized about having Shigeru Miyamoto as a mentor and teacher," said Jamil Moledina, executive director of the GDC. "By guiding us through his creative vision with a keynote at this year's GDC, Miyamoto is allowing all attendees this incomparable privilege."
Miyamoto's keynote will last one hour and take place on Thursday, March 8. We'll let you know what he's got to say for himself.

Nintendo of Europe has announced that 10 million DS units have now been sold across the continent, making it the fastest and best-selling handheld in history.
The DS launched here in March 2005, and was followed by the redesigned DS Lite in June last year. It was one of the most popular products for European consumers at Christmas, with 1.7 million units sold during December alone.
"This landmark figure of 10 million Nintendo DS gamers cements the console?s position as undisputed leader of the handheld market, bringing gaming to a whole new audience - something that was unimaginable a few years ago," said European marketing director Laurent Fischer.
"The DS is now helping to shape the whole market with sales of the Nintendo DS console and games being the main drivers behind recent market growth all across Europe."
The original DS is priced at EUR 130 / GBP 89, while the DS Lite retails for EUR 150 / GBP 99. Forthcoming titles for the handheld include Mario Slam Basketball, Star Fox Command and Final Fantasy III.

CMP Group, the organisers of the Game Developers Conference, have announced that this year's event will feature presentations from two key Nintendo figures.
First up is Eiji Aonuma, who began working on the Zelda series with The Ocarina of Time and more recently was responsible for overseeing the development of Twilight Princess.
Aonuma's speech will take a behind-the-scenes look at the development process, and discuss the challenges of bringing the series to different Nintendo platforms.
Koji Kondo's presentation is titled Painting an Interactive Musical Landscape and will focus on his work as a composer for games in the Super Mario and Legend of Zelda series. He'll describe what inspires him to create videogame uses and the methods he uses when composing.
Other recently announced speakers include Tsutomu Kouno, who will present a Loco Roco post-mortem, id Software's Todd Hollenshead and Konami's Koji Igarashi.
The Game Developers Conference will take place between March 5 - 9 at the Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco

Nintendo offers Wii owners a figurative link to the past every Monday with a new batch of retro releases on the system's Virtual Console service, but this week the company is literally offering them A Link to the Past, the Super Nintendo installment of The Legend of Zelda series.
Originally released 15 years ago, A Link to the Past follows the story of Link as he tries to rescue the kidnapped Princess Zelda. Along the way he'll travel through light and dark versions of the game's world, and attempt to thwart the evil wizard Agahnim's plans to resurrect Link's nemesis, Ganon. A Link to the Past was inducted into GameSpot's Greatest Games of All Time last year.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is rated E for Everyone and sells for 800 Wii Points ($8).
