Like the early days of the DS, the Wii still hasn't really found its own identity just yet. Still lacking a Brain Training or a Nintendogs, minigames are de rigeur on the system at the moment. Certainly the Wiimote is well suited for minigames, and it's been hoped that it will breathe some new life into a rather tired Nintendo franchise. Yup, Mario Party 8.
Joystiq got to play an incomplete version of the "ocho" at the Osaka leg of Japan's World Hobby Fair. Six different minigames were on display:
Lasso the barrels: Swing the lasso (Wiimote) in a circle, once you've got some momentum going, throw the lasso forward, grabbing a barrels for points (don't throw Wiimote). Some barrels are worth more points than others.
Ball tilt: Balls fall from ceiling. Direct bouncing balls to their correct container by rotating the wiimote. Green on the left, and purple on the right.
Drink shaking: Simply shake the Wiimote up and down; fastest shaker wins.
Target shooting: Just as in Wii Play, shoot targets with your Wiimote. The high score zone constantly changes so you have to think fast.
Jet ski jumps: Move your jet skier to the ramps to pick up coins. The challenge comes from the difficult controls.
Crank turning: Turn a crank as fast you can. Exactly the same as the similar WarioWare minigame.
Overall, the minigames were solid and fun, if not a tad on the simple side. If the board game side of things (not shown in this early version) is a winner, this could be a fun party game, if not an inventive one. They don't have their Brain Training yet.

SquareEnix today confirmed that one million copies of Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker have been sold in Japan since the game's release on December 28. This feat makes Dragon Quest Monsters only the second third-party DS title to achieve more than one million sales in Japan, following on from Bandai's success last year with Tamagotchi no Puchi Puchi.
DQM had been sold out in many stores across Japan this past week, with shortages so severe that Joker plummeted from second place in the Japanese sales chart to 42nd place. Stocks were replenished yesterday, however, and the demand for Dragon Quest Monsters (which is merely a tasty appetizer to enjoy before Dragon Quest IX is served) has immediately pushed SquareEnix' game beyond the milestone of a million sales.

As gamers in this modern era of peripherals and motion-sensitive controls, we thoroughly enjoy playing games that simulate real-life endeavors. And while we realize that playing Guitar Hero won't make us guitarists, and playing Phoenix Wright won't make us lawyers, could playing Cooking Mama: Cook Off make us chefs? Mama hopes so, and our new trailer shows just how she plans to do it.
Cracking eggs, whisking batter, and kneading dough are some of the more quotidian tasks Mama will lay before you, but expect to see some more exotic fare on your cutting board as well. Wondering what that might be? Hit the Movies tab above and select "Cooking Mama: Cook Off trailer - 26 Jan 2007" to see what's on the menu. Not Safe For Vegetarians.

Nintendo's Wii "News Channel" went live earlier this morning, allowing system owners to browse an Associated Press newsfeed in a variety of ways - several of which are unmistakably "Wii".
Installing the channel is as simple as visiting the Wii system menu and submitting to an update process, which takes just a few minutes. With that done, the News Channel button appears in the main menu.
When you first load it up, it confirms the time and date and then downloads information while a little cat sits on top of an advisory notice and you're left to listen to the sort of music typically associated with sleeping at the end of a "tough day" in a Final Fantasy RPG. Or maybe that's just us.
The download takes a good little while, but once it's done you're off, able to browse news by category (national/regional/international, sports, arts/entertainment, business, science/health, technology), clicking through to get a list of headlines that span the width of the page.
When you click on a story, it unrolls itself quickly with a scrumply paper sound effect, allowing you to scroll up and down in a few obvious ways - perhaps using the B trigger to drag the page around - while a little locational marker on a NASA-labelled map beams happily from the right side of the screen.
Alternatively, you can click "Globe", at which point you're transported to a close-up of wherever you are in the world. Ours showed London and a bit of mainland Europe. Key locations like Berlin and Moscow have bits of paper on top of them with numbers in brackets, signifying how many stories are tethered to each spot. Clicking an area loads up a list of stories. To go somewhere else, you simply click back and drag the world around with the Wiimote. You can also zoom in and out.
The other thing you can do on the News Channel is view a Slideshow. Like Sky News without all the sinister manipulation, you're left watching headlines appear on the bottom half of the screen one by one, as the world map sits happily on top. Pressing A as a headline appears lets you bring up the story, from which you can then either rejoin the slideshow feed or end it. It's all very intuitive, as you'd expect.
Of course, whether you'll choose it over GMTV remains to be seen, but since "GMTV" is the only morning television show we can now remember at all, it's probably safe to say all the present ones are rubbish and this is much better. Wait, hang on, Ellie says we ought to be watching Jeremy Kyle. If only.
Anyway, Nintendo has said that the News Channel will relaunch later this year - still free, mind - offering a greater regional focus. We will of course let you know when it does. In the meantime, let us know what you make of the current version. Useful, or pointless?

The N64 section of the Virtual Console has been a little quiet to say the least, with Super Mario 64 being the lonesome available game, but a second N64 title has finally appeared.
The hours we lost to Mario Kart 64's multiplayer mode are uncountable. Four-player races around Koopa Troopa Beach never got old, and now UK Wii owners can relive the joy in glorious hi-res.
Turbografx game Soldier Blade also released on the Virtual Console today - a decent shooter that's worth a look... after you've thrashed Mario Kart, that is.
Mario Kart 64 costs 1000 Wii points, which works out at around £7.50, while Soldier Blade will set you back 600 points (about £4.50).

Wing Island will join Kororinpa, Hudson's other Japanese-only Wii game, in making its way to western gamers in March.
You may remember Wing Island as a tech demo originally shown to demonstrate the tilt-sensing capabilities of the Wii Remote. It features a unique control system which has players holding the Remote almost like a paper plane, with the on-screen mimicking your movements as you tilt and twisting the Remote.
After completing your pilot training, you set one varying mission objectives that test your plane control - from dropping water onto forest fires to catching a number of rogue cows hiding around the island. It's a slower and than your average

A statement made by Hudson Entertainment's director of marketing, John Lee, in an interview with Game Informer, sparked a rumour that Nintendo could be making a new 'Games Channel' for Wii through which it will deliver new downloadable games.
When asked if Hudson plans to release any original content through the Virtual Console, Lee responded: "Well, the VC was specifically designed to bring back classic games, not to introduce new content. So to answer your question specifically: No.
"However, in the future, you should rephrase that question to: Are there any plans to launch original content on some downloadable service on the Wii, and you might get a different answer."
Curious as to what he may have meant by that, CVG contacted Nintendo and got this response: "Nintendo has developed a programming system that will allow small independent developers to make games for Wii download service.
"We cannot confirm at this time in what format the new content will be delivered, but in the future there will be original games available for download through the Wii Shop."
For those of you who don't know, Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, spoke of such a development tool at various games events last year, allowing low-cost game production for Wii. Anyone who got hooked on Geometry Wars on 360 knows how exciting this prospect is.
It's currently unknown when the proposed original game content will be made available to download, although it is unlikely that they'll be delivered through the Virtual Console.

The global rush to buy up hard to find Wii and PS3 hardware has helped eBay achieve one of its strongest ever quarters of growth, according to its recent financials.
The Times reports that in the three months ending December 31st eBay enjoyed a like-for-like profit increase of 24 per cent compared to the same period the year before. Revenue for the period exceeded $1.7 billion – a rise of 29 per cent year-on-year. Net income rose to $346 million whilst total sales reached $14.4 billion.
The UK, along with Germany, was named as one of the biggest growth areas for the site.
eBay chief executive Meg Whitman stated: “The fourth quarter was an excellent quarter for eBay, bringing 2006 to a very good close.”
Other eBay owned businesses also posted impressive performances, with internet telephone firm Skype and online payments company PayPal seeing revenue increase by 164 per cent and 37 per cent respectively.

News/release from phoneguy
This app enables the DS to control lights and appliances from anywhere via wifi. The DS becomes the ultimate X10 home automation controller.
Virtually all the lights in my house can be controlled remotely via X10. I decided it would be nice to use the stylus to not only change the brightness of the DS Lite screen but also the house. The standard X10 controllers only work from within the house. I have used my DS to turn on my porch lights, while standing on my relatives porch, 100 miles away from my house.
The app can be tested without any X10 hardware. To actually control lights or appliances an X10 Firecracker interface, an X10 Transceiver, and X10 modules or switches for each light or appliance are required.
X10.com sells the FireCracker 4-Piece Home Control kit www.x10.com/automation/ck18a_s_ps32.html
Ebay stores have it for less with free shipping.
Included is a windows sever app which needs to run on a PC with an X10 Firecracker interface plugged into the serial port. The DS app communicates with the server app to broadcast X10 commands to the X10 modules.
Features:
-Use the DS stylus or the keypad to send commands to any of the 256 X10 addresses (16 houses codes x 16 unit codes)
-Send ON, OFF, DIM, BRIGHT, ALL LIGHTS ON/OFF, ALL UNITS ON/OFF
-Commands are echoed back to the DS for confirmation
-XML config file for the server app allows lights and unit codes to be labeled and to create macros which are uploaded to the DS.
-The port the server listens on is configurable via the command line
-The server address and port are saved in SRAM on the DS. (This will overwrite sram).
-The server app can be used from the command line to send commands directly to the Firecracker.
I've tested it with a G6 Lite and an EZ-Flash II Powerstar.

While Phoenix Wright may never fail to rev our collective fanboy motors, when it comes to adventure games, Hotel Dusk: Room 215 has been garnering more and more excitement -- and even the reviewers who find fault with the title can't help but gush over the story.
GameSpot -- 82%: "One of the really neat things about Hotel Dusk is how the plot plays out. It's not often that you can praise fiction in games these days, but Hotel Dusk is a clever, stylish, well-spun detective novel hiding inside a DS cart ... It helps that the solutions for puzzles aren't often troublesome. All the puzzles are designed specifically with the realities of this hotel in mind, so you won't find yourself with any obscenely weird objectives or "tie the cell phone to the cat" moments, nor are you likely to find yourself glued to a walk-through for the bulk of the game ... [t]hat Hotel Dusk mostly manages to avoid falling back on ridiculous item hunts and completely illogical puzzle solutions to progress is a godsend, simply because it lets the storytelling drive the game, and the gameplay rarely distracts you from the mystery."
eToychest -- 90%: "Stylistically, Hotel Dusk marries pencil sketched characters and water colored backdrops with traditional polygonal environments in a manner that should be jarring, but instead feels both unique and altogether perfect. The characters themselves are distinct and very expressive, each displaying mannerisms reflecting their attitude regarding a particular line of questioning. Ask Louie about his past, and he'll clam up and try not to make eye contact, or sweet talk Iris to see her beam like a schoolgirl. Most every game has characters, Hotel Dusk has personalities."
GamePro --75%: "Hotel Dusk probably won't appeal to every DS gamer, as it requires a degree of patience and thoughtfulness that only the aged (and insane) are capable of. But anyone looking for a cerebral and deliberate challenge should definitely check out this cool and unique title; just be patient with it, and don't let its minor faults discourage you from plumbing its depths."

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was in development for approximately, oh, say, forever. That intensely long cycle, besides making a game epic and wonderful and amazing, usually gives rise to an extreme attention to detail. Some savvy forum-goers have compiled a list of little easter eggs for your enjoyment, which can be found after the jump.
How many of these did you find, or even notice? Do you feel as though these little details even make a difference in the overall gaming experience? We ourselves find that we're occasionally drawn back to the world of Hyrule for a few minutes, just to feel that epic sense of adventure ... or maybe it was just those bomb arrow fireworks.

CWiid is a Linux interface to the Wiimote written in C. The goal of this project is to develop a working userspace driver along with various applications implementing event drivers, multiple wiimote connectivity, gesture recognition, and other Wiimote-based functionality. The library developed for this project is (almost) a full-featured programming interface to the Wiimote.

I made a GlovePIE Skirmish game that you can play away from the computer.
You need:
* Two wireless sensor bars (or TV remotes or candles or whatever generates infra-red). Each person must wear one on their body somewhere so it won't fall off or break if they run around.
* Two Wii remotes
* One reasonably fast computer with Windows and a Bluetooth adapter with the two wiimotes connected.
* GlovePIE 0.29
* a friend
* A space where you can run around and shoot at each other, that is in range.
* The following GlovePIE script.
Instructions:
Each player puts on their wireless "sensor bar" and switches it on, and they pick up their connected wiimote. Then they press "Run" on the script. Then it will warn you that you have 10 seconds before the game will start. So run and get into position.
After the 5 seconds your weapon will start to charge up. When your weapon is charging it will beep five times then make a sound and vibrate which indicates that it is ready. Also the LEDs will come on one at a time while it is charging.
The lights on your weapon will be on when your weapon is charged and ready to fire. You can also check whether you are player 1 or player 2 by holding the A button. Or you can check player 1's score by holding the 1 button, or you can check player 2's score by holding the 2 button. It stops counting once it gets to 10.
You can shoot with the B button. The default maximum firing rate is five rounds per second, but you can change that at the top of the script. It will make a sound and vibrate when you shoot. If you hit the opponent then their remote will make a loud noise and power down for 7 seconds. Their weapon will beep very quietly while it charges up again. They can't shoot during that time, and they can't be shot again either.
The score will also be shown in the debug box on the screen, if you don't want to check it with the 1 or 2 button.

We've just released a "Wii Friendly" version of the Clusty search engine that is a complete redesign of Clusty from the ground up:
http://wii.clusty.com
I think this may be the first search engine that is completely optimized for the Wii with a Wii look 'n feel, large text, automatic search submit, and nice rollover effects to make it easier to navigate
the clusters and search results.
