When Diddy Kong Racing ships in early February, it will support a whole slew of multiplayer options, including full-on six player online racing via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service. Late last week Nintendo hosted a batch of online sessions so gaming editorial could zoom around the courses against other (competing) publications to see how well the game can handle the load. And pre-release, so far so good.
We'll give the nod to Nintendo's NST team for Metroid Prime Hunters still having the most elaborate online experience, but Rare's Diddy Kong Racing team comes a close second. The game has a "smiley face" system that's actually quite helpful: if a friend is online, for example, a smiley face will show up on the "Friend Roster" option of the menu. Clicking on this selection will take you to the list of friends you've entered into your game, where you can see what that friend's status is: offline, online, starting a game, or in a game. This is also where you can check out the statistics of how many times you've won or lost against this individual in the game's races and battles.
If a friend has set up a game, a smiley face will show up on the "Join Friend" option. This is a pseudo lobby system where you can host a match-up; anyone who's in your friends list can join in, but you can't restrict and lock your match-up to specific friends. You can, however, decide to cut off your list to less than the chosen amount as friends come in, which is really handy since many online games will sit and wait until the match-up times out before starting.
For random competition, you can choose two player, four player or six player races from the menu and the game will play "matchmaker" with random folk also seeking out that style of racing. This does require that whole "critical mass" thing of thousands of people owning the game, which won't start for another week...so we couldn't really do much of that whole random match-up thing in our early playtest. But from what we've experienced, it's much like Mario Kart DS: players pick a track and a type of race, and the most selected track and type of race is the one players will compete within.
Once a game's set up in the friend match-up, the host chooses the tracks and the type of race, whether it's in plane, car, or hovercraft. If the host hasn't unlocked the track, mode, or character in single player mode they won't be available in multiplayer...which will definitely encourage players to play through as much of the adventure as they can before jumping online.
Lag and dropped connections hasn't been much of an issue, but again -- we're playing Diddy Kong Racing a week before it ships. Once people start buying the game next week all that can (and will) change. And we're also playing against people we trust...we haven't experienced *******s who love to drop out of a race mid-session because they're losing, so we haven't seen how Rare handles this in-game. We did test out dropping out in the middle of a connection ourselves, and it seems that the game will continue if there's still at least two players connected. Good to know.
Diddy Kong Racing ships next Tuesday. We'll have our full review around that time.

Oh, we don't mean the pain of the action variety. This is more the pain of "where the hell is Bleach DS?!" We haven't even seen the first one and they're already on a sequel. What gives? Folks outside Japan can certainly appreciate a good fighting game. Oh well, looks like those of us who can't live without a little violence might have to turn to importing. This isn't just any violence, either. We're talking four-on-four multiplayer WiFi violence.
Did any of you guys import the original? This sequel is said to improve on the gameplay, and that's a tall order. It did take them a while to get around to showing off anything from the sequel, so maybe some extensive fine-tuning did go on. If only we had more than a few screens to show off, but these will have to do for now.

A new release of the Devkit for Nintendo DS and More.
Heres the details:
This long awaited toolchain update brings the much requested directory functions to libfat.
devkitARM release 20 has been updated with newlib 1.15.0 and the completed stdio patches for directory related functions. Example code will be added to the nds examples later.
Cearn's Gameboy Image Transmogrifier joins the tools available in the devkit. This image processing tool should provide you with a simpler way to add graphics to your projects. Again sample projects will be added to the nds and gba examples over the next few days.
Chishm's dlditool is now included as well as the dldi linkscript for added convenience. A dldi template is available in the examples.
The included makefile rulesets have been reordered so that .itcm/.iwram/.arm.c/cpp files should work as intended.
dswifi 0.3d now uses closesocket rather than close for sockets. The old function was overriding an important function of the same name in newlib and interfering with some aspects of stdio. The hitherto unannounced 0.3c brought support for newer wifi hardware in recent DS units as well as some bugfixes related to UDP.
The latest libfat merely enables the long awaited directory related functions, devkitARM release 20 is a requirement for this build.

Oh, Mama. We love you so, especially when you're starring in cheeky new trailers. This new Cooking Mama: Cook Off trailer is one of the best game adverts we've seen in a while. It's got it all: humor, gameplay, and a sense of fun that really suits the game. The only problem is that now we really, really want the game. Damn you, Mama!

“Punch-Out!!” has once again been trademarked through the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Nintendo filed the trademark on April 1, 2005 for service under “electronic game discs.” The status of the name is active as recent as January 11, 2007.
The game has not officially been confirmed. However, recent reports from IGN hinted at possible Nintendo franchises being reborn on Wii. If in fact a Punch-Out!! title is coming, the game could theoretically have been in development since its 2005 filing date.
Punch-Out!! is a highly characterized boxing title where you control Little Mac, a tiny but gutsy Bronx competitor, on his way to becoming champion of the World Video Boxing Association. The franchise has long been cherished by boxing and gaming enthusiasts for its simple, intuitive and challenging gameplay. If the title is confirmed, one must wonder whether Little Mac will make his much anticipated debut in Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

This has got to be one of the funniest Wii-based videos we have seen yet. We suppose our poll where we asked you how you played should have included an option for 'laying down,' however we aren't sure what this guy is doing in the video can even be considered just your average laying down. It's like he's power laying ...

Soon after the game's release to the Virtual Console yesterday, the folks over at Go Nintendo downloaded the title for the affluent cost of 1,000 Wii Points (we're paid in pain) and got together for a three-man session. They discovered something odd, however, when racing on the track Moo Moo Farm. The odd occurrence deals with the speed of the game, which they determine "is about double that of 150 cc."

Nintendo reported Friday that sales of its new Wii videogame platform have pushed the company's earnings up 43% in the last year.
The results helped Kyoto, Japan-based Nintendo hit its 52-week high by closing at 34,150 yen ($281.14) on Friday. Nintendo's shares have climbed 113% in the last year.
Nintendo’s net income topped 131.92 billion yen ($1.1 billion) for the nine months through December 2006, up from 92.19 billion yen ($764.6 million) in 2005, beating a 12-month profit forecast of 120 billion yen ($996 million) for this year.
Much of that increase came from the Wii, the relatively low-priced game machine that Nintendo introduced last fall to compete with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360.
Nintendo’s Wii has outperformed Sony's machine, which debuted at the same time. According to research house NPD Group, Nintendo shipped 1.1 million Wii consoles to the U.S. in November and December, 60% more than shipments of PlayStation 3. In Japan, Nintendo sold nearly 990,000 units in December, more than twice PlayStation3’s sales in two months, according to Tokyo research firm Enterbrain.

EA of Japan has just released the first trailer and footage of SimCity DS and it's looking to be another AAA DS title. The stylus seems to work just as good or better than a mouse and new gameplay features may just reinvigorate the aging series. You can help Santa drop presents on Christmas and even fight off giant Ape intruders with your stylus as the weapon! SimCity DS hits Japan on 2/22 with no US release date yet announced.

Nintendo has been bestowed the proud honor of a Spielwarenmesse award, selected as the 'Trend + Lifestyle' winner of this year's annual Nuremberg International Toy Fair. Judges chose the Wii console along with "Wario Wear" for the duo's ability to "encourage playing PC games in groups instead of alone." Judges also found that "the product not only appeals to player types with an affinity to PCs, but also to new age groups." Hmmm, we weren't aware that Wii had become popular in the yoga scene... Maybe Nintendo should start bundling the system with a set of crystals.
Winners of a 'ToyAward' are permitted to print the 'ToyInnovation quality label' on retail boxes of winning products. Something tells us Nintendo's gonna pass.

You read it right folks. A T-Rex steals the show as he tries to chomp on everyone's favorite blue hedgehog, in this new gameplay video for Sonic and the Secret Rings. Check out Sonic at his break-neck best, speeding, bouncing and just plain running through some insane environments. He even does some log riding down a river.
Click the Movies tab, launch the video player, and find "Sonic and the Secret Rings gameplay - 30 Jan 2007" to catch a glimpse of the Wii's first foray into the Sonic franchise, which is looking to redeem Sega's main man... er main hedgehog? We look forward seeing more of the blue-blur when the game launches later this year.

As well as showing off the nice art style of the Prince of Persia games, these five new hi-res screens give a further insight into how the ninja Prince will be controlled using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.
As you can work out in the images, the Prince's normal attacks are performed by slashing the Wii Remote and Nunchuk (the latter only when he has a weapon in each hand).
The screenshot that shows Dark Prince hanging from the ceiling strangling the enemy below with his lethal Daggertails is demonstrating the game's stealthy Speed Kills. Just get near an enemy without being noticed you and you can flick the Nunchuk downwards to execute the Speed Kill, which kills them instantly and saves you the hassle of a full-blown scrap.
Prince of Persia Rival Swords, coming to Wii on March 30, is a direct port of The Two Thrones, which previously released on PS2, Xbox and GameCube game in 2005. Yes, THAT long ago.

New release from Creebo
Hello everybody!
I am submitting my firmware replacement for the DS called CreeboMe. This is an alternative to FWNitro or FlashMe by having a stylish menu added to boot either a DS Card, Homebrew Device, or a GBA Cart.
NOTE: To flash use the same methods as FlashMe and FWNitro. I will take no responsibility to a bad firmware flash. If you are not confident about flashing your firmware, use the rom instead, however the DS Card Option will NOT work on the rom version. Also this is only a beta version and as you can tell it does not have many feature. But not to worry! I am confident on keeping this project alive. Thanks to Loopy for the base firmware replacement, and all of the guys in #dsdev for all of the wonderful help. If you cannot get the homebrew button to work, the failsafe is A+B+SELECT+START.
The file can be downloaded here, my advice is to wait for others to say its perfect before using, bricking your DS could be a reality if things go wrong.
