emu_kidid a respected coder in the Gamcube Scene has today announced a new project to get a team of coders together to deliver the Holy Grail to the Gamecube and Nintendo Wii. Heres the announcement in full of his Nintendo 64 Emulator for the Gamecube and Wii Project:
DIGG THIS NEWS
I'm looking for some seasoned coders in GC and or N64 to join a team that I'm proposing get down to business and code up a N64 emulator for the GC/Wii. I know that doing this as a one man army takes time, but if we have several experienced coders, it won't take very long at all to do.
The most time consuming parts would be the cpu and gpu ports. The ROM Loading routines, buffer managment for games over 16Mb into ARAM, saving, GUI, Pads etc are only trivial.
I'm not asking for the impossible, in-fact it's very possible, because we've all seen the OoT and Majoras Mask emulator from the Zelda bonus Disc, which emulates a rather CPU intensive game such as Majoras Mask rather well.
The project goal for me would be to get the emulator as good as, if not better, than the already released commercial N64 emu on the Zelda DVD.
That is:
256mbit Rom Loading
Full CPU/Audio/Video/Pads
DVD loading of Roms
SRAM etc.
To surpass that:
Allow all roms to attempt to run
Save State/SRAM etc to SD or Memcard
GUI, 512mbit rom support (tricky but possible)
If you're interested, please message me on these forums. Only determined and experienced coders please.
The Project will commence in Mid July, with or without support of anyone else. How long it will take will be determined on how many coders help out.
Please use this as the official development forum.
Laters, let the days of N64 emulation on GC/Wii begin

Nintendo today released new screenshots from Final Fantasy VI Advance, a game which will hit the store shelves across Europe on June 29th 2007, exclusively for Game Boy Advance. Final Fantasy VI Advance is a turn-based RPG with gameplay broken down into two distinct phases: exploration and battle. In the exploration phase, players wander through towns or dungeons, sail through the sky or travel across the "overworld" (anywhere outside of a dungeon or town), speaking with the people they meet to gain clues and advance the story. In certain locations, players will get into battles, either randomly (when wandering freely) or by design (when they fight a creature as part of the main story). Players can equip their characters to customize their arms and armor as well as their relics and magic. Press 'read more' for details.

A top executive at the U.S. unit of Sega Sammy has voiced his skepticism over the long term success of the Wii, suggesting that the PlayStation 3 is still likely to become the most popular console of the new generation, despite currently sluggish sales.
Speaking in a Reuters article, vice president of marketing Scott Steinberg stated, "I am a little concerned about the creative depth of the Wii pool. I'm not sure if they will top out in 2008 or 2007. The Wii will start to look really dated in a couple years when developers get more value from the 360 and learn more and more about the PlayStation 3”.
"But how much value can developers and creative folks get out of this wrist motion two years from now, or 5 years from now, or 10 years from now?", he added. “"How can they design products that aren't too derivative of what's already out there?"
A long time rival of Nintendo during the 8-bit and 16-bit era, since Sega’s move out of the hardware market both companies have worked together successfully. Wii title Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz was a key launch release and the company has also enjoyed significant success with exclusive title Sonic and the Secret Rings.
As well as being one of the strongest third part supporters of the virtual console retro download service, Sega also has other exclusives scheduled for later in the year, including light gun conversion Ghost Squad and crossover Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games.
Despite this Steinberg has predicted that the PlayStation 3 will ultimately enjoy the largest installed userbase at the end of the new generation, saying: “We know the PS3 pool is pretty deep. There's a lot to exploit there”.

The Scarface video game creates a gameplay environment that authentically recreates the historical time period of the film, touching on politics, news items and events of the day. As Tony Montana (in an alternate-ending story concept that follows the events of the original movie classic), players will travel through the steamy, often violent streets of Miami, the irie islands of the Florida Keys, the Bahamas and various other locales and will interact with a world full of seedy and dangerous characters to procure information, negotiate business deals, smuggle contraband and avoid rivals and DEA on a mission to rebuild their fallen empire.

An analyst group called Screen Digest is predicting continued success for the DS in the future. We do the same thing, but when they do it, they use specific numbers, and people believe them. Their craziest number? They are saying that in the distant future of 2011, 89% of Japanese households will own a DS.
They predict that by 2011, the DS will have an install base of 112 million systems worldwide, versus the PSP's 67 million. To put that in perspective, the Plays tation sold 102 million units, the GBA has sold 79 million, and the NES sold 61 million. We personally hope the DS continues to dominate, because we love our jobs the system.

FIFA 08 cover star Ronaldinho will appear in the Wii version of FIFA 08 as a customised character who will host game modes created exclusively for Wii called Footii Party with Ronaldinho.
The new mode will introduce Table Football and Shoot Off, where you can play as your Mii characters. "My character looks like he enjoys playing football and shares my passion for the game. This is important to me. Whether you are playing football on the pitch or my party games in FIFA 08 on the Wii, it should be a fun and enjoyable experience," said Ronaldinho.
"When Ronaldinho steps on to the football pitch, he plays with passion and energy. We've brought that same spirit to FIFA 08 on Wii - it is fun, high-energy entertainment the entire family can enjoy," added senior producer Tim Tschirner.
FIFA 08 is all about FreeMotion controls that, EA says, will help level the playing field for all players and turn FIFA 08 on Wii into a physical, social activity. There'll be all the usual options and standard types of gameplay and competitions to hammer your mates with too. But you'll also be able to pass, shoot, and perform trick moves with a flick of the wrist. Sounds interesting, more soon.

FIFA producer Tim Tschirner has said that he believes the Nintendo Wii matches up to the first Xbox in terms of power.
Tschirner's comments came in an exclusive interview with GamesIndustry.biz's sister site, Eurogamer.net
"It's about as powerful as the original Xbox," he said. "The video hardware unfortunately is not as powerful. There's just a couple of key things that you can do on Xbox like shaders which you just cannot do on the Wii... Overall though it's pretty much what the original Xbox was."
Tschirner went on to observe that he has found the Wii "very straightforward to write code for", adding, "I think from a creative point of view it's been awesome working on this platform because there's obviously stuff we couldn't do before."
He also praised Nintendo for attempting to broaden the market with the Wii by appealing to people who don't normally play games.
"That's a bit of a philosophy that we wanted to get into this game as well - that people don't have to be afraid of finding the control scheme overwhelming or overly demanding," Tschirner explained.
"And then on the flip-side, we wanted to make sure that long-term FIFA players would find everything they love in the game still in place."
