Playing wireless hand-held video games on Japanese airplanes no longer will be allowed after a revised law enforcing an earlier ban went into effect Monday. This includes PSP and the DS (but not Laptops) Also wireless computer mice and headphones that are not provided by the airlines have also been banned aboard flights. Battery chargers and toys that give off electronic sounds can’t be used during take-offs and landings, the ministry said.
Hold on here is the Good stuff - The law also has been relaxed to now allow the use of electric razors, calculators and cassette players. (Give me an F-ing break here!! Cassette players, Does anybody even still own one?)
Previously, passengers were only asked by the airlines to refrain from using gaming systems with built-in wireless functions, like Nintendo’s popular DS or Sony’s PSP.
It seems the problem lies with the handhelds’ built-in wireless functions, which, Japan’s transport minister has declared, have the ability to interfere with aircraft navigation systems and well that could be bad. Passengers will still be allowed to play game devices which don’t have wireless functions, so break out your old Game Boy because that’s about all your going to get to play.

Nintendo is taking quite the financial hit to make sure players don't drop their Wiimotes. Those free covers that we reported on earlier today are expected to cost the company over two billion yen (about $18 million [or £8.8m]), according to the online version of Japan's Asahi newspaper.
The site reports that Nintendo will ship out about twenty million of the cover units. This is not just to Japan, as the covers will be available internationally as well (see Nintendo America's website for more details.)
Despite the high cost, Nintendo reps told the site that they don't expect any effect on their bottom line. This isn't a big surprise, considering that Nintendo is now chasing Toyota for the number one spot in Japanese industry.

Nintendo has told us you can send off for your Wii Remote Jacket in Europe now, by filling in a request form on the official site.
The silicone cover for the Wiimote is completely free, and provides extra grip and cushioning to stop you damaging the hardware or accidentally launching it at unsuspecting friends eating their dinner.
"All Wii Hardware, Wii Remote and Wii Play shipped from today will include the Wii remote jacket," the spokesperson told Eurogamer. "So this should hit retail shelves in the UK in about seven days time."
"People who already have a Wii can claim their Wii Remote Jacket(s) by going to the official website and filling out the request form. They will receive their Wii Remote Jackets within 28 days."
Shiny.

The Nintendo Wii has outsold the Sony PlayStation 3 by more than four to one in Japan during the past six months.
According to Enterbrain data, as cited by a Reuters report, from April to September of 2007, Nintendo sold approximately 1.6 million Wii consoles.
Sony, meanwhile, sold 385,492 PS3 consoles in Japan during the same period.
Both the PS3 and the Wii were released in Japan within a few weeks of each other in November and December of 2006. Microsoft's Xbox 360, released a year earlier, has continued to struggle. In the first half of 2007, only 122,565 Xbox 360 consoles were sold in Japan.
The demand for the Wii continues to be so high that spokesperson Reggie Fils-Aime claims that Nintendo won't be able to meet the demand for the upcoming Christmas season.

PRESS RELEASE: REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 1, 2007 – Nintendo announces the Wii Remote Jacket, a durable, silicone cover for the Wii Remote™ that provides a variety of benefits for the player. Nintendo will include the Wii Remote Jacket with all Wii™ hardware systems and with all Wii Remotes sold separately or packaged with Wii Play™. Hardware featuring the Wii Remote Jacket will begin shipping to retailers on Oct. 2 and is expected to be on retail shelves the week of Oct. 15.
The Wii Remote Jacket provides cushioning for the Wii Remote for people who might accidentally throw or drop their Wii Remotes while playing games. Use of the Wii Remote Jacket is meant to supplement, not replace, the basic game-play instructions: keep a firm grip, don’t let go of the controller, use the wrist strap and make sure your play area is free of people or objects. The Wii Remote Jacket also serves as a cover for the Wii Remote. Nintendo recommends players use the new Wii Remote Jacket as a cushiony shield, though the current Wii Remote is a safe product when used properly.
“We’re always looking for ways to improve our products and make sure everyone has a safe and fun experience,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Many electronics manufacturers provide similar protective covers for products like cell phones, PDAs and MP3 players.”
Current Wii owners who want to equip their Wii Remotes with the new Wii Remote Jacket free of charge can go to Wii.com or nintendo.com, or call 1-866-431-8367 to place an order. Nintendo will begin taking orders on Oct. 2, and Wii Remote Jackets will begin shipping the week of Oct. 15.
The Wii Remote Jacket is designed to be added and removed easily, in case users want to slip their Wii Remote into an accessory like the upcoming Wii Zapper™.
Those in the US/Canada can register their Wii, here. Those in Latin America can register their Wii, here. You are able to request up to four (4) jackets per Wii.

SNES 9x Alpha is a Super Nintendo emulator for Nintendo 64. It can be run using the Doctor V64 backup device for N64.
Hi People, loom speaking..
This is my first big release on the N64. First of all let me say that I do realize that speed is still
a major issue, but this version hasn't even started to be optimised. The reason for this is that I spent
a lot of time getting the whole emu to work, and I wanted to release this version on the same day as the
official page was setup.
Now a few facts about this port :
- This is a work in progress, consider this a preliminary beta
- RAM was a major issue, and not having those memory hog Nintendo devkit is a very nice advantage. Yes,
people, this was done the usual CZN way, that is to say 100% without devkit (well, except for our own
routines)
- The emu ported was version 1.04 of SNES9x. It wasn't yet compiled with all the features activated, as
I thought that it was slow enough like it is now.
- The game ROM is entirely located in the ROM allocation space of the N64. This has important consequences
on the speed of the DMA transfers between the ROM and the video memory. This will be on of the first areas
of optimisation I will consider, as I think it should make a difference.
- Only 1 joypad is currently supported, and support for more is planned for an upcoming version.
- Sound isn't available in this version, sorry
- Super FX and DSP cannot be guaranteed in this version.
- Enjoy !
czn-snes.zip is just the normal release, while snes_191.zip is an enhanced version made to make use of the Doctor V64 BIOS 1.91's emulators support function.

via gamasutra
As part of an extensive new Gamasutra interview, Team Ninja's Tomonobu Itagaki (Dead Or Alive) has been discussing the merits of Nintendo's DS and Sony's PSP, pinpointing both the PSP's "toned-down" console roots, and suggesting that the DS market may be getting flooded with low-budget titles.
In the interview conducted immediately following the recent Tokyo Game Show, Itagaki was asked why Team Ninja has decided to produce a title, Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword, for the DS, rather than something for the PSP - and he commented:
"When Nintendo first announced the specs of its unit, it was around the time that Sony was also announcing that they were bringing out the PSP. When I looked at the estimated specs of both, I knew which platform I wanted to work on... and I am sure that you, or people like you, might wonder, 'If the visual is so important, then why choose DS over the PSP?'"
Itagaki continued, explaining exactly why the DS appealed to him:
"The reason is because the PlayStation Portable is basically designed on the philosophy of having a console that you can take with you. They are basically just toning down what we see on home consoles such as the 360 or the PS3; whereas the DS was looking at a whole new method of input. Just as I said earlier, one of the key aspects of game design is the interactivity between the user's input and what happens on the screen, so I thought: here is a chance to do something totally original, using the strengths of this hardware. If I was going to make a game for PSP, I would be better off making a game for PS2, because they are essentially attempting to do the same thing."
The Team Ninja head added, regarding those who try to compare the two main handheld systems, something he suggests doesn't make complete sense:
"So the whole viewpoint of the PSP versus the DS is flawed. What Sony really needed to do was get those key Game Boy users and broaden the market. When Nintendo first announced the DS, they were very realistic at the time in knowing that it may be a success or it may not; they certainly weren't convinced of its success. They just knew that it was something they needed to try, for the sake of the industry, to continue to expand the kind of experiences that were available. And that type of spirit is something that I could relate with, and part of the reason why I chose to go with this hardware."
Later in the interview, which also deals with a number of other subjects, Itagaki also addressed the current state of the Nintendo DS in terms of software titles:
"So now that we are in this market where there are a glut of relatively low-budget games that are filling up the marketplace, the market may be ready for a more serious, more refined experience. We are right at this turning point in the portable space, where we will be launching this Dragon Sword game, and this may be exactly what people out there are looking for. They may be tired of all the "training" games, and looking for something more substantial. Or maybe not. We won't be able to tell until we actually throw it out there and see how people react."

Hello everybody,
The second major version of GlideHQ, the texture enhancements module for Glide64, is ready for public release. Project description, taken from GlideHQ readme file by KoolSmoky:
"This is a realtime texture enhancer library with hi-resolution texture
pack support for Glide64 ( http://glide64.emuxhaven.net). Traditional and
non-traditional techniques have been used to achieve speed and high image
quality even on a 9 year old 3Dfx Voodoo2.
Although the 3Dfx Glide3x texture format naming conventions are used, the
library can be expanded for generic use.
Supported:
Enhancers: Hq4x, Hq2x, Lq2x, Super2xSai, x2
Filters: Smooth (1,2,3,4), Sharp (1,2)
Compressors: FXT1, S3TC
Input formats: GR_TEXFMT_ALPHA_8,
GR_TEXFMT_RGB_565,
GR_TEXFMT_ARGB_1555,
GR_TEXFMT_ARGB_4444,
GR_TEXFMT_ARGB_8888,
GR_TEXFMT_ALPHA_INTENSITY_44,
GR_TEXFMT_ALPHA_INTENSITY_88
Output formats: Same as input unless compression or hires packs are used.
Hires texture packs: Rice format (Jabo and GlideHQ format coming later)
Acknowledgments:
I hope you enjoy GlideHQ (texture enhancer library for Glide64). Greatest
thanks to Gonetz for making this happen in his busy time. We've rushed
everything to share the eye-candy with all of you N64 emulation fans. I
would also like to thank a great friend of mine, Daniel Borca for providing
the texture compression code, Maxim Stepin (hq2x 4x), and Derek Liauw Kie Fa
(2xSaI) for the filtering engines, and Rice for his N64 graphics plugin
source code. GlideHQ also uses the boost C++ libraries, zlib general purpose
compression library, and the Portable Network Graphics library. Thanks to
all the developers for making them available.
The source code for GlideHQ is released in hopes that it will be improved.
I know the coding is not on par after so much late night caffeine boosts.
If you have suggestions or modifications, please feel free to post them on
the Glide64 forum at emuxhaven.
:
-KoolSmoky
"
To install and test GlideHQ:
1. If you used previous version of GlideHQ, remove all its files and texture caches.
2. Download GideHQ distributive (GlideHQ_bin.zip ) and unpack it I somewhere.
3. Run included gltest.exe ((c) mudlord) to learn about capabilities of your video card.
3. Copy contents of Plugin folder into Plugin folder of your N64 emulator.
4. For OpenGL, copy glide3x.dll from Wrapper folder into your emulator's folder. This is important, because older version of the wrapper do not support texture compression.
5. Run your emulator, select 'Glide64 Wonder Plus HQ' as your video plugin
6. In Glide64 configuration dialog, open "Texture enhancement" tab and select options you like. If you are not sure, which option to use, press presets buttons below. Presets do not affect your choices for texture filtering and enhancement, so pick them manually, according to your preference. If you want to use hires textures (I'm sure you want), select "Rice format" as format.
7. GlideHQ has the same requirements for hires packs, as Rice Video. If you already used hires packs with Rice Video, you know what to do. If not, there are tutorials for you:
http://www.emutalk.net/showthread.php?t=29577
http://www.emutalk.net/showthread.php?t=26329
http://www.freewebs.com/jantarctica/texturepacks.htm
8. Run your game and enjoy.
Note: Current version is a prototype, based on Glide64 "WonderPlus". That is, for end-users this is Glide64 "WonderPlus" with texture enhancements. Since it is a prototype, it can be buggy, slow, inconvenient and so on. Thus, we need your feedback to make it better.
Note2: GlideHQ_src.zip is actually 7-Zip archive, renamed to zip.

Ant512 has released a new version of his Windows like app for the DS, heres whats new:
No new source yet, but I've put together another demo:
http://ant.simianzombie.com/files/bi.../woopsi021.zip
Lots of bugfixes, but the two main changes this time are screen backgrounds (achieved with the pre-existing SuperBitmap class) and Amiga-style screen dragging. You can now drag a screen's title bar down to reveal the screen below.
