UK, October 25, 2007 - Ready those 'It prints money!' GIFs. Nintendo has announced that profits are soaring and its half-yearly net income has more than doubled compared to a year ago. Of course, what that actually means is a lot of people are buying Wii and DS consoles.
All this good news means Nintendo has increased its earnings forecast for the whole year from 245 billion yen to 275 billion yen, with total sales coming in at an expected 1.55 trillion yen worldwide. What's more, as of September 30 this year, the number of Wii units shipped worldwide is 13.17 million, while the DS has raced to 53.64 million units.
In the six month period ending September 30, Nintendo's net income jumped from 54.35 billion yen to 132.42 billion yen, while sales more than doubled compared to the same period last year, climbing from 298.8 billion yen to 694.8 billion yen. Wowsers.

Just in time for the EU launch of Metroid Prime 3, Eurogamer has a retrospective on the Metroid series well worth checking out.
"The first Metroid presciently set the tone for the future of the franchise by appearing first on a struggling format and only reaching foreign shores after lengthy delays. Metroid was initially released only for the Famicom Disc System in 1986. The FDS was one of Nintendo's first attempts to monkey around with new storage methods, but its success was limited and it never made it beyond Japan. One year later, Metroid finally appeared on the plain old NES in North America and then, another year later, we pox-ridden Europlebs were deemed worthy of having a copy to call our own. Hmm. Sounds familiar."

Though there are no official announcements at the moment, Next Generation is reporting on two interesting possibilities for the future of Nintendo products. In a report filed yesterday, the site hints that Nintendo may be considering a MMOG version of Animal Crossing , to be released on the Wii console. Also exciting: the possibility of a Flash Card for the DS that would allow classic Nintendo games to be (legally) played on their handheld console.
"The uncontrollable homebrew and piracy communities that use the DS rely on similar devices ... this should, in the long term, allow Nintendo to exercise some control over at least the former through the simple step of offering a path to publisher-supported content. Compared to the slightly vague WiiWare proposition, this has the possibility to revolutionise homebrew development - at least in terms of distribution and the possibility of mainstream success - but how far the notoriously controlling Japanese giant will allow that community the creative freedom it requires to flourish will only be seen in practice."

The Moon Books Project is proud to present the film Bloodlust, and the short story it is based upon The Most Dangerous Game, for your enjoyment the Nintendo DS.
Bloodlust! is a 1961 horror/thriller film about a group of young adults who visit a tropical island only to become prey for a sadistic hunter. The film was featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000.
The Most Dangerous Game (1924) is a short story by Richard Connell and the author's most well-known work. It concerns a big-game hunter trapped on the island of a sadistic fellow hunter who, bored with conventional prey, has come to see humans as the only quarry worthy of his skill.

Okami is coming to Wii. We thought "great!" but lots of you hit Capcom's forums shouting "another lazy f-ing Wii port", and Capcom's not taking that lying down.
The company's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, hit the boards to defend Capcom's work on the epic PS2 quest.
"We selected Ready at Dawn to do the port. These guys are all ex-Naughty Dog and ex-Blizzard," he said. "If we wanted a cheap and dirty port, I could have turned around and picked any one of 50 houses and gotten it done for less and perhaps more quickly. Clearly, that wasn't the approach we sought for a variety of reasons (for the fans, for the reputation of our company, for the potential of the product, etc.).
"Given that the only port we've done to date was RE4, which has a 90+ gamerankings score and provided AMAZING value for the platform, has this really been Capcom's modus operendi such that this allegation should be leveled at us?" a clearly frustrated Svensson adds.
"Zack & Wiki is getting better reviews than just about anything you'll see this year on Wii, except possibly Galaxy. Shovelware is not what we do," he continued.
He goes on to explain that Ready at Dawn is first concentrating on getting the whole game running on Wii before thinking about enhancements. Svensson said: "As we are NOT at that point in the process yet, we are loathe to even mention any potential changes or enhancements for fear of disappointing the fans/media."
Why no graphical enhancements? "Okami is graphically one of the most impressive games on any platform today, and it's fair to say, we're not creating new higher res textures or higher poly models on anything. It doesn't need it."
And in justifying the descision not to add any new levels or challenges, he says: "We've got no current plans to make a 40-60 hour game 50-70 hours." Fair point.
Take a look at what else was said in the Capcom forums, then discuss below.

Engine Software has announced that Nintendo of America approved the company as an official licensed Wii developer.
The Wii developer license is the seventh consecutive Nintendo license that Engine Software has acquired, after earlier being approved for Nintendo DS, Game Cube, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Color, Gameboy, and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
"We are very happy to have acquired the Wii Licensed Developer status, as this will open up new creative opportunities for our team, as well as new business opportunities for our company," said Ruud van de Moosdyk, vp of development at Engine Software.
"In the last few months many of our clients have already inquired whether or not we support Wii development, so demand for developers is high."
Based in the Netherlands, Engine Software has no development projects currently scheduled for the Wii platform, but will be investigating the possibilities for both retail and Wii Ware projects. It intends to recreate its key technology on the new platform such as the Music & Sound Replayer already available for Gameboy Advance and the Nintendo DS.

Eidos is still unable to confirm exactly when Tomb Raider: Anniversary will be released on Nintendo Wii in Europe, but it did assure us today that it will be this side of Christmas.
Overnight, the publisher's American colleagues confirmed that the Wii version of Crystal Dynamics' brilliant re-imagining of Lara Croft's original platform adventure would appear there on 13th November at a USD 39.99 price point.
An announcement on the European release is, we're told, to be expected "very soon".
PS2 and PC versions of Anniversary were, of course, released earlier this year to tremendous acclaim - something matched this week by the 9/10-scoring Xbox 360 version, which is due for release at retail tomorrow alongside a PSP version.
The game will also be released on Xbox Live Marketplace in four, 600 Microsoft-point chunks for owners of Tomb Raider: Legend to download as an alternative to buying the boxed version, although exact timing for that has yet to be established.

Nintendo has revealed another fighter up for the picking in its upcoming Wii character bruiser Super Smash Bros. Brawl. But don't get too excited, he's not exactly our favourite Nintendo character...
King Dedede, the fat, penguin thing from the Kirby series, is the next man (or, erm, bird) on the Smash Bros. Roster. In case you didn't know (and this is the Nintendo nerd in us speaking), he's the original antagonist of the Kirby series from Kirby's Dream Land.
Dedede joins Kirby and Meta Knight as the three playable Kirby characters in the game, which we're sure has nothing to do with the fact that the blokes that originally worked on the series are now handling Smash Bros. We're going to use Sonic, anyway.

"Super Mario Galaxy is one of the finest games we've ever played".
Those are the words you wanted to hear, right?
Issue 23 of the Official Nintendo Magazine UK hits shelves tomorrow with the first English-written review of Miyamoto's platform stunner, and the big, fat 97 percent slapped on it means they like it quite a bit.
"It's funny because the thing that annoys us most is that its fantastic graphics show us the sort of games we could have been playing for the past year had some developers bothered to pull their finger out," reviewer Chris Scullion says, in praise of the lush visuals we've been shouting about for months.
"Throughout the whole game the graphics constantly amaze, with stunning visual effects, some remarkably huge playing areas, and characters that are positively filled to the brim with personality," he continues.
"The sound is some of the best we've heard in a Mario game," he goes on to say, citing the mix of catchy new tunes with retro-tastic remixed classics (you can hear SMB. 3 music remixed in this video of the awesome Cookie Factory level).
"Some of the power-ups give a similar sense of nostalgia", he adds, noting the return of Fire and Invincible Mario, along with others "involving ice and bouncing" which they gladly chose not to reveal (no spoilers, thanks).
Gladly, it's not too easy either, says ONM. "While some of the missions are quite simple, others will test the skills of even the most dedicated Mario fans." Phew.
Their only complaint is of the "tacked on" second player Remote feature (which allows another player to fool around with their own pointer). But we were never bothered about that anyway.
Check out the full, spoiler-free six-page review in the Mario-covered ONM #23 on shelves tomorrow, along with a free metal Zelda Hylian Crest pin badge and some Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games DS decals.
We'll have a review of our own closer to the game's launch on November 16.

And nowhere else, so cool your jets. Nintendo have announced that their official TV tuner dongle thingy for the DS will hit Japan on November 20, and will set Japanese consumers back ¥6800 (USD$59 [£29]). Not cheap for what you get, but then, what price convenience and portability? Importers beware: it's a one-seg tuner.

Nintendo has announced its half year financial results to September 30 and it's more extremely good news for the Wii and DS manufacturer.
Sales were up 132.5 per cent to JPY 695 billion (USD 6.08 billion), resulting in an operating income of JPY 189 billion and a profit for the six month period of JPY 132 billion (USD 1.15 billion) - up 143.7 per cent on last year.
Of those sales, handheld consoles - led primarily by sales of the DS - accounted for JPY 211 billion (USD 1.85 billion), consoles - dominated by Wii sales - made JPY 201 billion (USD 1.76 billion), while total software income, including royalties, added up to JPY 241 billion (USD 2.11 billion).
The DS handheld sold 13.35 million units globally in the six month period, while the Wii sold 7.33 million.
Software sales highlights included Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, which shifted 6.95 million copies (taking the lifetime total to over 12 million) while Mario Party 8 has sold 2.89 million to the end of September.
Overseas sales accounted for 78 per cent of the total sales figure, and although the company had higher revenues in the US than in Europe, the operating income was detailed as JPY 167 billion (USD 1.46 billion) for Japan, JPY 24 billion (USD 210 million) for Europe and JPY 15 billion (USD 131 million) for the US.
The company reiterated its strong position in the games market, which has seen its strategy not to take on Sony and Microsoft in the processing power stakes completely vindicated.
"Nintendo DS has gained widespread popularity with its software line-up…Wii has been attracting all the members of the family and has impacted how families view entertainment in the household."
The company now forecasts net sales for the full year to hit over JPY 1.5 trillion (USD 13.1 billion), yielding a profit of JPY 275 billion (2.41 billion).
Nintendo's share price was up 1.3 per cent at the close of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, at JPY 69,800 (USD 611).

Could Nintendo be planning a Virtual Console service for the Nintendo DS? That's the word from UK magazine Edge -- in the same article, no less, as the Animal Crossing MMO news that Susan covered just now.
What I find more interesting is the bit about Nintendo gearing up to release a Nintendo DS storage card that will allow users to download and play Game Boy content on their handheld. Sure, it also opens itself up to abuse, but Nintendo has been pretty successful at not allowing users to crack Virtual Console games, so maybe they've got this sewn up?
Just not sure how the download service will work: will you do it all on the DS? If so, you'll be... tapping in your credit card number onto the screen? I guess that would work.

In Golden Axe III, players visit the once-peaceful kingdom from the original Golden Axe to find it threatened yet again by the Prince of Darkness, who has stolen the Golden Axe, taken over the kingdom and rendered all its warriors harmless with a curse. In this one- or two-player action game, players can take the role of a giant, panther or sword-wielding human to fight your way to the Golden Axe and save the kingdom.
