Hirokazu Hamamura, the head of gigantic Japanese gaming mag Famitsu's parent company, made a prediction that Nintendo will unveil the next-generation DS at E3 2008 this summer. Normally we wouldn't think anything of some businessman making predictions, but if anyone knows what's going on with Nintendo, it's Famitsu (the gaming industry and gaming press are really tight over there).
Kotaku says it took two years between the transition from DS to DS Lite, so a summer DS Lite to DS EXTREME transition might be possible. Our prediction is that they'll do away with the GBA port altogether, saving space and hardware costs.

Mario Kart Wii has sold over three hundred thousand units in its native country of Japan, reports are suggesting.
According to gaming website Jeux France, the title has racked up the sales after being out for just over twenty-four hours.
If true, it would mean Mario Kart has already beaten Wii Fit - which sold 250,000 in first week - but not Super Smash Brothers. Brawl that somehow racked up half a million sales on its first day.
Of course, Jeux France doesn't indicate how it knows this, so we might find out that only an elderly pensioner and a four year old girl bought the game yesterday. Based on the amount of people we've seen online though, we doubt it.

A new version of Game Boy Color classic Toki Tori is to be released as a WiiWare download.
According to developer Two Tribes, the update "improves the original on every front". You can expect a new look, improved content and a control system involving the Wii remote. There's no word on how much it'll cost.
For those who aren't familiar, Toki Tori is a puzzle game that looks like a platform game. You have to use items such as the Telewarp, Freeze-o-Matic and InstantRockTM to plot your way through levels.
The WiiWare service is up and running in Japan, and will launch in the US on May 12th. Nintendo still hasn't said when it's coming to Europe.

Sam & Max developer Telltale's shoved out first screenshots and trailer from Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, its WiiWare game that we reported on yesterday.
The game will be released in five episodic instalments, with the first to hit in June. According to Telltale, each episode plays out like an extended cartoon and feature "comedic" plots that must be uncovered, which is tied into puzzle and adventure-style gameplay.
It's added that each episode is crammed with "time-wasters" to "keep players poking around in the world, including Strong Bad emails to check, prank phone calls to place, and mini-games..." and that WiiConnect 24 features are included.
Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People is also to be released for PC. Oh, and it's based on some web-based cartoon series that we'd never heard of - but you can get a taste of it here.

Colour us surprised, as this week the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console not only receives four new titles, but each one is a certified gem with two classics culled from the Commodore 64's back catalogue and two from within the dusty annals of the Master System.
California Games is first up, and having made its first appearance back in 1986 it still retains much of its charm in its reproduction of the bright and breezy past times of the West coast of America. Impossible Mission is another Commodore 64 title heralding from space date 1986, a randomly generated action platformer, that if we rightly recall involved a lot of cartwheels. But manly cartwheels, you understand.
Wonder Boy is the fondly remembered arcade platform title from SEGA, showing up on the Virtual Console in its Master System form that managed to stay largely faithful to the original. Our excitement is reserved, however, for Fantasy Zone, the surreal free-roaming shooter that introduced the world to Opa-Opa. We'd love to spout our love for the game to you here, but someone's already beaten us to it.
They're all available for approximately £3.50 each, or precisely 500 Wii points.
Virtual Console European Releases, August 31
Commodore 64 - 500 Wii Points- California Games (1987)
- Impossible Mission (1984)
Master System - 500 Wii Points- Wonder Boy (1986)
- Fantasy Zone (1986)

Square-Enix is developing a new RPG based on the manga comic and recent anime series Soul Eater, it's emerged.
According to Japanese website Game Watch, the game is being developed alongside the anime series, which premiered in Japan just last week on April 7.
Soul Eater is set in the Shinigami technical school for weapon meisters. The story revolves around three groups trying to turn a "human weapon" into a "Death Scythe" by collecting souls of ninety-nine evil humans and one witch, which sounds perfect for a RPG full of grinding. The game is being developed in conjunction with the series.
Unfortunately, Square-Enix Europe had no information on whether Soul Eater was on its way to Europe at the moment, so we wouldn't hold our breath for a release over here.

We were surprised to hear Nintendo announce a brand new game at its spring media summit this morning - we were not surprised that said game was another Mario sports title.
Mario Super Sluggers will arrive in Japan in June and elsewhere "later this year," featuring the requisite number of mascot characters and suitably silly gameplay.
We were treated to a brief demo that showed a 5-inning match between the Mario Fireballs (firebats?) and the Peach Royals. Each team consists of a captain and what we assume will be the Mario second stringers (Shy Guys, Koopas etc), similar to the Striker games.
Control is, according to Nintendo's Bill Trinen, much like Wii Sports in both pitching and batting. The former is done by holding a button, winding up and releasing when blue halos close in around the character; the latter by simply holding the remote and swinging.
Both forms have supercharged attacks that distract or hinder the other player; we saw Mario's fire pitch scream past a batter, and later, Mario's fire swing ignite an unlucky Donkey Kong out in left field.
Sluggers is meant to be a "bridge game," in that it takes a setup casual players know (Wii Sports) and adds layers to it that core gamers already know.
For example, there is actual fielding in Sluggers, whereas Wii Sports handled all the running and catching. However, instead of introducing a deep control system, Sluggers uses only the remote and has you primarily waggling to run, waggling to throw and waggling to do just about anything else.
There wasn't any hands-on time so we can't say for sure if this simplified scheme helps or hurts the experience from a core gamer's perspective.
In a welcome twist, Sluggers actually looks decent, though perhaps not as a big leap over GameCube's Superstar Baseball as Galaxy was over Sunshine.
Expect much more as the game's ambiguous release date draws near. If it's June in Japan, and baseballers are lovingly refereed to as "the boys of summer," we'd be shocked to see it come any later than August.

CYBER_Aeon one of our members here has today released a new version of ChessNet for the Nintendo DS, heres the release details:
Alright everybody. Here’s the somewhat-long-awaited Release 2. There’s still plenty of room for improvement down the road, but I think you’ll all be quite pleased with the new designs and bugfixes.
Sadly, because of the massive amount of data structure and protocol changes, the game server has to be reset. But thanks to the new configuration, this should be the last time that ever has to happen. From now on, an upgrade will merely require you to download a new copy of the ChessNET client.
This update will also reset any local games you were playing. Finish them first if you don’t want to lose them.
Changelog for Version 1.0.2
Added a custom icon to the ROM.
Added account handles and passwords.
Added account registration.
Added support for Castling.
Added support for En Passant.
Added support for 50 Move Rule.
Added status screen while the DS downloads a game.
Fixed a buffering error in the Client POST Handler.
Fixed checkmate detection. [No more victory on check. ;]
Completed the About menu option.
Local save games show when the last move occured.
Added screens after winning or losing a match.
Touched up the Online Games screen.
Touched up the Find Opponent screen.

According to the President of Enterbrain, (Famitsu parent company) there is a chance a new Nintendo DS model will be revealed at E3 2008.
Nintendo spokesman Hiroshi Yasushi did not deny this rumour, but told Famitsu that the company cannot comment at this point.
A new successor to the DS shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the handheld has sold over 64 million units worldwide, with Japanese sales approaching 27 million.

I'm generally pretty good about restraining from DS accessories purchases, but these classic Nintendo cases from an Etsy seller are a little piece of fantastic. Constructed of hand-sewn felt, the pieces are far from polished, mass-produced products, but that's precisely what makes them so charming in the first place. Pick one up for $13 or both for $21. In continuing with my fast food metric of the day, that's anywhere from 3-5 value meals.

It appears that those who were worried about Japanese copies of Mario Kart Wii not loading on US Wiis through Freeloader may have been breaking a sweat for nothing. Import retailer NCS tested the game on v3.1U firmware and found it to run just fine. Yes, this information directly conflicts with an earlier report from Play Asia, but there's a good chance that Play Asia tested the game with v3.0U firmware which NCS confirmed will not play the game.
In other words, all hope is not lost. Still, go forth at your own risk, there may be bananas around the bend.

Remember the first time you completed a full race on Super Mario Kart (frustrating finish and all)? If you've somehow let less important things push those blissful memories aside, take a glance at ryo007's beautifully assembled papercraft set and see if doesn't start to come back. This palm-sized kit features a detailed SNES console, a couple of controllers and a hollow version of Super Mario All-Stars. Best of all, the creator has hosted a template in order for you, closet SNES lover, to create your own. Finding where you put those scissors, however, may still be a challenge.

April 10th, 2008, 23:35 Posted By: wraggster
Net Asia Co Ltd has announced results of its survey on the use of portable game consoles. The company conducted the Internet survey in Japan using mobile phones and received responses from 401 mobile phone users ranging from the age of 15 to 29.
Asked what portable game console they currently use the most, most male respondents (42.0%) cited Sony Computer Entertainment Inc's (SCE) "PlayStation Portable (PSP)" (excluding responses of "No specific console"). Second most cited (30.3%) was Nintendo Co Ltd's "Nintendo DS Lite," followed by the same Nintendo's "Nintendo DS" (16.8%).
Meanwhile, results were completely different with female respondents. Most respondents named the Nintendo DS Lite (52.2%) and the Nintendo DS (27.4%). These Nintendo DS-related two models constituted roughly 80% of all responses from female samples. Female respondents who answered the PSP, which was most popular among male respondents, only accounted for less than 10%.
When asked how often they use game consoles, most responses (36.6%) said "less than 1 day a week." Of the respondents who said they use game consoles more than once a week, "almost every day," "2 to 3 days a week," "4 to 5 days a week" and "1 day a week" accounted for 24.6, 15.1, 12.5 and 11.2%, respectively.
As for how long they use the console for videogames per day, most respondents (28.9%) said "1 hour" during weekdays, followed by "less than 15 minutes" (22.4%), "2 hours" (18.1%) and "30 minutes" (16.8%). Respondents who play portable videogames for "3 hours" to "more than 5 hours" per day totaled 13.8%.
When it comes to weekends, they generally play videogames longer than during weekdays, but most respondents (21.6%) still said "1 hour" as in weekdays. Responses of "3 hours," "2 hours" and "more than 5 hours" reached 18.5, 18.1 and 10.3%, respectively.
To a question asking if there is any variation in the frequency and time of playing videogames with portable consoles compared with a year ago, most general responses (33.9%) were "decreased," whereas 22.2% of all respondents said "increased."
Moreover, when the company asked where they use portable game consoles (multiple answers allowed), the majority (81.5%) answered "my room." Limited to males, in particular, the ratio rose to 87.4%. Next most cited was "the living room in my house" (50.4%).
Based on these results, Net Asia analyzed most people use their portable game consoles at home. Other responses included "train" (14.2%), "a fiend's/acquaintance's house" (11.6%), "outside home" (10.3%) and "car" (6.5%).

News/release from Kram
Voil*! I took out my first Homebrew NDS!
This is a small application that allows you to send files of a DS to another WIFI, without intermediaries! (No PC, router ...)
This is the first version, it lacks a big part of the program: the choice of file to be sent ... For now, you need to write the path to the file that you wish to send in DS2DS.txt which can be found at the root of the memory card. I am in the process of encoding the missing part, which should arrive before the end of this week or next week.
The explorer is finished and everything is just fine with full (!) Color everywhere!

The Wii Wheel has a little sticker explaining you need to remove the plastic wrap sent by Nintendo before inserting the remote. Guitar Hero III’s shell and the zapper require players to remove the wrapper.
