Online play in Mario Kart Wii is smooth. Only a tiny bit of lag effects twelve player races. However, the world ranking system has issues. A glitch allows players to drive a single lap then wait by the finish line while sitting in reverse. Glancing through the rankings, it looks like Nintendo is actively removing these times off the leaderboards, but you can see the glitch in the video below.

Kaplan, Inc. has teamed with Aspyr Media to create an SAT prep game for the Nintendo DS, according to Newsweek. Versions are also on their way to PC and Mac, where the test prep software is already fairly common.
The project is early in development and does not yet have a name. Newsweek reports that it was Aspyr who pitched the idea to Kaplan. If this is a success, can we get a DS game to help us understand Special Relativity? Perhaps we can get Professor Layton or perhaps even Wario as our virtual teacher.

Nintendo has told Eurogamer that claims a new DS model will be unveiled at E3 this year are "purely rumour and speculation".
Word spread after Enterbrain boss Hirokazu Hamamura said he thought there was a "possibility" of Nintendo producing a fresh iteration of the handheld at the event. Enterbrain publishes Famitsu magazine.
And the evidence stops there.
The Nintendo DS originally appeared here in March 2005, before the much prettier DS Lite was released in June 2006.
The handheld has gone on to sell over 65 million units around the world.

Yeah, you read that right. Launches. Those Koreans who after 18 months sans official support still care, you have our sympathies. According to Nintendo Korea's website, the console will be getting its long-overdue debut on April 26, and will retail for 220,000 Won (USD$225) [£113], albeit individually: Wii Sports will be packaged and sold separately, and will launch alongside Zack & Wiki, Wii Play, Super Swing Golf and four more unannounced titles.

Nibris's Sadness has been kicking around for so long, when it was originally unveiled Nintendo's Wii was still known under its codename Revolution.
But it ain't dead - yet - and the developer's released the very first in-game screenshot. And yes, that really is black and white. Your eyes aren't deceiving you. Nibris has said in the past that the game is a tribute to pre-World War I cinema...
Sadness is a psychological thriller/horror game in which players "will need to confront their greatest fears and protect themselves in hopes of not getting trapped inside the main character's nightmare", according to latest details.
The developer promises that the game has eight different endings depending on your actions during the event, and adds that the Wii Remote and Nunchuck "control the main character's hands so players feel as though they are in the psychological thriller."
No release date yet for Sadness, but it's definitely scoring high on our weird-o-meter.

Nintendo has told Eurogamer that it has had no reports of problems with Mario Kart Wii discs.
It was speaking after those with Japanese versions of the game reported trouble loading content and numerous crashes.
Similar issues were reported following the release of Super Mario Bros. Brawl. Some Wii owners had to get their lens cleaned so the game's rare dual-layered disc format could be read.
However, Nintendo has confirmed that this isn't causing problems here, as Mario Kart Wii is only available on a single-layered disc.
Mario Kart Wii was released in Europe last Friday and is worth every penny. Pop over to our Mario Kart Wii review to find out why.

Rising Star plans to release Super Swing Golf for the Wii here on 27th June.
This is a sequel to Panga! Golf With Style from last year; it rather unhelpfully takes the name of the US original, in case you were already confused.
Super Swing Golf is an adaptation a fantasy golf MMO set in a bright and colourful world where you can put inappropriate clothes on anime-style girls.
The sequel adds a multiplayer Party mode featuring games like Darts and Longest Drive for you and up to three friends, as well as plenty more costumes to unlock and weird caddies to employ.

IT had to happen didnt it and the after effects will really harm all the good work done by the homebrew community, the cracking of the Virtual Console means that Nintendo will go after holes and exploits until we are left with nothing, anyway heres what one of the Wii scenes finest says about this sad news:
I’ve ranted a bit about how we need to be responsible as coders and consider the effects that releasing software will have on the community — in terms of hardware damage. I didn’t think that I had to also point out the need to consider broader, longer-term effects.
Several people have send me links to a recent release — the first pirated VC game. No, I’m not posting any links, and please don’t post any in comments — it’s easy enough to find anyway, if you really care. It’s currently the raw decrypted files, and not yet in a form suitable to be installed on a Wii, but I give that another 24 hours.
This is a direct result of Waninkoko’s release of his NAND FS Dumper. This is not the same as his “NAND Dumper” that he released a few days ago, which dumped the raw, encrypted contents of NAND to an SD card. (That’s pretty easy to do — just do some reads from /dev/flash — and is based on like 6 lines of code that I gave him. It’s also mostly harmless.)
No, this uses a exploit in the NAND FS permission system on the Wii that lets it read all of the contents of all titles on the Wii — including decrypted VC games and anything else.
For what it’s worth, this is the reason we never released any tools or code after the 24c3 hack. Segher asked that we not, in the fear that this moment would come. So, we didn’t, and sure enough it happened anyway, although it took perhaps four months longer than it would have. There is only so much we can do.
Anyway, Waninkoko’s code is almost exactly the same as some code that dhewg released months ago — the Wiifuse server. What’s the difference? Dhewg didn’t want to enable this, so he left it to the end user to provide the authentication credentials that Wiifuse uses to read the contents of the NAND. Waninkoko’s program does the same thing, but it comes with a hacked TMD that enables “root access” (more or less).
Why is this a problem? Remember what happened when Datel released their Freeloader?
Piracy is morally wrong — developers need to eat, too. However, I don’t expect this to persuade everyone, so I will also offer a more pragmatic reason. Nintendo’s primary motive in patching security holes is strictly financial — in the same way that releasing firmware patches is dangerous for us because it requires careful testing, releasing firmware patches is expensive for Nintendo because it requires careful testing on their part, too. Consequently, they will not bother to fix bugs until they cause specific, identifiable monetary loss on their part.
We saw this with IOS37, which I believe was a reaction to Datel’s Freeloader. However, Nintendo has never bothered to activate IOS37 — why? I think it’s because they were specifically trying to prevent / discourage Datel from pressing discs for US and Japanese Wiis. All of the PAL discs have already been made, and Datel has already spent all of the money they need to spend to sell those discs. At this point, they will continue to sell the discs they made because they have nothing to lose by doing so — and when IOS37 comes, they will try to deal with it however they can.
On the other hand, they have not yet spent the money to make USA and NTSC/J discs. They now know there is a very real possibility their current software will stop working on updated Wiis at some future date, so they now have to sit and wait for that “shoe to drop” before proceeding. Nintendo released IOS37 to stall Datel.
Now, Nintendo needs to keep people from copying VC games. So what will they do? They have to patch all of the things that could enable this. So, they will now go ahead and patch all of the old versions of IOS, and they will probably go ahead and patch BOOT2.
I know that Waninkoko is not a bad guy — he and I have chatted a fair bit on IRC — but I think he is reckless and does not think through the consequences of his actions.
Oh, and another thing — people keep asking me “Will there be some way to downgrade our consoles once IOS37 has been released?” I hate that question. Why?
The answer will always be “Probably, but it will require finding a security hole which Nintendo hasn’t patched.” That’s why I don’t like to answer the question — because if I start talking about all of the security holes that could be used to downgrade a Wii, then they will get patched before we have a chance to use them.
Guess what? The hole that Waninkoko is using to read VC games out of the NAND FS is the same hole that I was planning on using (first) to be able to downgrade versions of IOS. So, when it takes another few months to be able to downgrade a Wii, you can say “Thanks, Waninkoko!”

Tons of people were complaining that people were cheating in Mario Kart Wii’s Time Trial records. I didn’t know how quickly Nintendo would act, and I am quite surprised to find out that they have already taken steps to solve the problem. According to multiple readers, cheaters have had records deleted, and the cheating methods have been blocked. Nintendo wins this round, let’s see what happens from here on out!

A Wii chipping factory has been tracked down to fraudsters in Leicestershire. The Wii is the nation’s favourite family console – so much so that the Japanese corporation hasn’t been able to keep up with UK demand for not one but two Christmases! But an undercover sting by Leicestershire’s Trading Standards Department backed by the games industry’s own crime unit unveiled a counterfeit plot potentially worth £millions.
As a result of enquiries made by TSD officers and investigators from ELSPA, the trade body for the country’s major games publishers, a home was raided in the Coalville area of Leicestershire this week. The raid, which was undertaken by Leicestershire TSD and police, turned up vital evidence suggesting the non-descript home actually housed sophisticated counterfeiting apparatus – including an industrial unit to churn out rogue console chips. At least two people have so far been arrested for their part in the ‘fraud factory’. More than 2,000 counterfeit chips, were recovered from the raid. These consisted mostly of Wii console chips although some were for Xbox 360 and PlayStation2 consoles. A number of consoles were also seized. After the planned trial, all the rogue chips will be destroyed – if only to avoid disappointment amongst the nation’s competitive children and parents.
A Nintendo insider said: “A chipped Wii might sound cool but it is useless. The latest Wii extravaganza, seeing Mario back in a racer at the front of the pack, Mario Kart Wii, would be useless on a chipped Wii. You’ll never get the interaction or support when it all unravels. You’d have to be pretty stupid to think online gaming won’t be easily log-able in such digital days! Chip it and you brick it, as we say around the office. There is only one real Wii experience – and it doesn’t come chipped!”
Following the crack-down, visitors to the offending website are currently greeted with this ominous message: “The site is currently down for maintenance. Normal service will resume shortly, sorry for the inconvenience.” Michael Rawlinson from ELSPA said: “Fraud can cost Internet companies a lot more than just its visitors. Our investigators are out in force working with Trading Standards Departments across the land combing everything from Sunday car-boot sales to auction websites 24/7 seeking-out counterfeiters. The message from the nation’s favourite games publishers is simple, fraudsters can run but they can no longer hide!”
John Hillier, who heads ELSPA’s crime unit, said: “Piracy costs the games industry dear – just like that of any other entertainment industry. Making good and inventive games is an expensive and creative process, with some titles today costing £20m or more to develop. To make a quality title involves teams of highly skilled professionals, from programmers and graphic artists to voice actors and musicians. When a pirate sells illegally-copied games they undermine the viability of our industry and in turn that threatens jobs.”
Paul Jackson, Director General of ELSPA, added: “We would like to thank Leicestershire’s Trading Standards Department, and Police for all their efforts during this investigation. We have now stepped up our campaign against thieves of games software and others who attempt to flout intellectual property rights of our members. We have sophisticated tracking techniques at our disposal these days and as my colleague put it, the cyber-criminals can run but they can no longer hide!”

A thief stole more than £2,000 worth of Nintendo Wii games from Tesco in Bexhill.
James Hubbard, 27, was spotted putting the items in a box before walking out and making off in a car.
Prosecutor Mark Kateley said: "The defendant filled up the box with around 65 games worth just over £2,000.
"At some point he left the box in the store, went outside and spoke to another individual and went back inside.
"Later he left the shop with the box of items without paying for them.
"Security staff ran after him and he dropped the box and the property was recovered.
"The defendant made off in a Vauxhall Vectra. Police arrested him later at home."
Hubbard, of Mountfield Road, Hampden Park, appeared before Hastings magistrates on Thursday and pleaded guilty to the theft which happened on January 26.
He also admitted a separate theft which took place on January 9 at the same store in which he stole up to 20 similar items worth more than £400.
Magistrates adjourned the case until May 6 so pre-sentence reports could be drawn up.
Hubbard must appear before Eastbourne magistrates on that date.

Sh4wn has posted an update to his dldi gui for Linux
Although most cards already have auto DLDI patching, I released an update of my little program
Changes:
- DBus Support, so now there can be only one instance of the program at the same time. The great thing about this is, that you can set dldi-linux-gui als your default application for .nds files, and then it will add the file to the list.
- small fixes
- makefiles
