Nintendo has updated the Virtual Console with three Halloweeny games for the NES.
They are Devil World, Castlevania III and Ghost 'N Goblins, all of which cost 500 Wii Points, which is approximately GBP 3.50 / EUR 4.50.
The latter duo need no introduction (and don't really need buying either, since you can get the SNES Super Castlevania IV and Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts for 800 Points each), but Devil World might have passed you by.
Originally released 24 years ago this month, it's a Pac-Man-esque maze game designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, in which players control a cutesy dragon who collects crucifixes on a quest to kill the devil. In hindsight, it's rather amazing it never came out in the USA.
We can think of better Halloween-related ways to spend tree-fitty, but we can think of nothing amusing upon which to conclude this paragraph.

As we reported yesterday, Sega's just picked up the publishing rights to this Wii-exclusive FPS from High Voltage.
Set in Washington D.C. following a "vicious alien invasion", The Conduit is aiming to prove that the Wii has "potential beyond the casual market", which sounds like a good idea to us.
Its controls will enable you to adjust look sensitivity, turning speed, dead zone and other options, and it'll support the Wii Speak and Wii MotionPlus peripherals when it releases in the second quarter of 2009.

It's DS Mania all over in Japan! On the eve of the DSi's launch, IGN took a tour of Tokyo's biggest retailers and came to one conclusion: the DSi is going to be pretty much impossible to come by Saturday morning if you haven't already pre-ordered.
The same thing could be said about the DS Lite a couple of years back, of course. But the big difference is the whole "pre-order" bit. While major retailers like Bic Camera and Yodobashi Camera didn't taking pre-orders for the DSLite, most of the Bics and Yodobashis we checked had been taking pre-orders and weren't planning on holding same-day sales.
The key phrase here is "had been taking." We couldn't find a single shop that was still open to pre-orders.
We've also read some reports indicating that DSi pre-orderers went quickly -- in a matter of days at a major Sofmap shop in Shinjuku, and in a matter of minutes at Amazon.com.
So does all this pre-order business mean you won't be able to turn your browsers to Famitsu.com and the like tomorrow to see pictures of Japanese people waiting in line? While many of the shops that are normally featured in the line-up reports at those sites are pre-order only and won't have lines, we did find a couple of shops, including the Asobit City shop in Akihabara, that are line-up only.
The Bic Camera in Yurakucho, which you might remember as the location of some of the uglier scenes during the PS3 launch, is doing both pre-order and same day sales. The pre-orders have already sold out, and we were told to probably expect a line.
A few shops are getting creative. The recently opened Yamada Denki Labi shop in Shibuya has been handing out raffle tickets all week. They'll be closing off later tonight and holding a drawing tomorrow morning. Anyone who gets selected will be able to pick up their system at any point in the day.
The large Bic Camera shop in Shinjuku is probably going to have lines -- only not on Saturday morning. The shop is actually handing out tickets at 9:00PM the night before launch (that's in a couple of hours from when this article is being posted). Those who get a ticket will be able to pick up a system whenever they like.
We'll be going around town Saturday morning in search of lines for photo-ops, but with all the pre-orders, it's possible that there won't be too much material for our cameras. Despite what you end up seeing tomorrow, though, the DSi appears to be off to a great start.

According to this Dengeki poll, anyway. The Japanese site conducted a survey of its readers just days before the Nintendo DSi launches in Japan, and discovered that most were pretty nonplussed by the shiny new upgrade.
The most surprising statistic? Only 3.6% stated they'd be purchasing the DSi "soon," a worryingly teensy minority, and perhaps another sign that the DSi won't match the Lite's epic launch. In the next bracket, 29.4% of readers said they'd wait a little bit before jumping in, but 40.7% said they'd already made their mind up against buying a DSi. The new, larger screens are the most attractive feature of the console, said 30.8% of respondents, but the two cameras got considerably less love: only 15.1% of people named them as the best bit of the DSi.
Exactly how representative Dengeki's survey is could be debated. There's no mention of how many readers voted, for example, and Dengeki readers undoubtedly represent a very small proportion of all potential DSi buyers. Still, 3.6% is, y'know, small.

Updated release from Yossi:
What is this for?
When HBCb9 came out, they decided that they no longer need to support any invalid .elf files. If you have .elf files, you need to convert then to .dol with some little program that gets buried in some directory when/if you install devkitPro. This script will automate the task of converting all your stuff. It even comes with that little program so you don't need to install the entire devkitPro.
What do I do?
There are 3 files in the archive. Do whatever you want with the readme.txt, but put the other 2 files in your apps folder on the sd card (you need that sd card reader again :-/). Then just run the elf-dol_converter file and follow the directions on the screen. On linux you may have to do chmod 755 elf-dol_converter first.
Notice!
This deletes the old .elf files after it's done with them. If you want to keep them either back them up beforehand, or edit the script to not erase.
There are some valid .elf files out there. Running this script on them will cause them to stop working. Backup your apps folder before you run this.
List of apps with valid .elf files
These should not be run through this converter. Backup these programs before running this script, as it doesn't have the smarts to avoid them. Feel free to add to this list if you find something that should be in it. So far the list is:
Kobo Deluxe
GeeXboX
Cheapo workaround is to rename (not convert) a valid boot.elf to boot.dol. HBC still loads it just fine, and this script will ignore it. Not ideal, but we're all hackers here, right?

Scognito has recompiled his Scogger game for the Nintendo wii to be compatible with the latest Homebrew Channel Release.
Note (30-oct-08): The Homebrew channel beta 9 requires .dols (or new compiled elfs) to boot, so I've recompiled
Scogger to work with it. All downloads starting from today are Homebrew channer b9 compatible.
Scogger is a simple puzzle game, released in occasion of the Annual drunkencoders christmas game coding competion.
The goal of the game is to make the frog jump over all the tree trunks.
The only avaiable direction the frog can move are forward, left and right (no diagonals), with no jump distance limit!
Remember that the frog cannot jump backward!
Clean the stage for going to the next level (they are 10 out of 100 random)
You can restart the level if you get stuck or skip it (but you have to make the so called "konami trick" (you know what is that, didn't you?) at the titlescreen

Steve Corey has posted some news on the port of Doom for the Nintendo Wii:
Here's what's fixed so far in the new version:
When you finish the game, you can now advance through the "cast"
Fixed config file saving/loading
Enabled classic stairbuilding by default
IR Crosshair can be disabled in the menu
IR Crosshair only appears when in a level (not automap, etc..)
Vertical resolution adjusted so the entire screen fits. (bottom and top used to be offscreen)
Fixed Twilight input bug (finally)
I may be adding a few more bugfixes, and I'm almost done with the "big" new feature.
Look for a release fairly soon...

A new beta release of Dolphin the Gamecube and Nintendo Wii Emulator for Windows has been released.
Dolphin is a Gamecube emulator. It also has preliminary support for Wii and basic Triforce emulation (this is pending a commit, and does not run games yet).
Gamecube compatibility is about the same (or worse, due to various core changes and lack of subsequent compatibility work) as previous releases.
Wii compatibility is very low. Some games show their intro movies, that's it. There is preliminary Wiimote emulation but it does not work yet.

Shigeru Miyamoto has said that the Wii editions of Nintendo's two biggest mascots, Super Mario Galaxy and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, were good but not quite the games he wanted them to be.
"What I've been saying to our development teams recently is that Twilight Princess was not a bad game, by any means. But, still, it felt like there was something missing," admitted Miyamoto. Even though we, along with the rest of the world, absolutely loved it. We knows what he means though.
Miyamoto went on: "And while, personally, I feel like Super Mario Galaxy was able to do some things that were very new and were very unique, at the same time, from another perspective, certain elements of it do feel somewhat conservative in terms of how far we branched out with design. And so this is something I've been talking to both of those teams about."
Sounds like Miyamoto's been up-ending some desks.
"Of course," he went on to tell MTV, "as is customary with Nintendo, it's very rare that we are able to announce any games until they're ready for release, but I can say that these are themes that both of those teams are taking into account and the hope is that for both of those franchises, when we do release the next installments of the Zelda [franchise] or maybe the next Galaxy, hopefully they will feel newer and fresher than their most recent versions."
We thought Galaxy was incredible, too. Still playing it, in fact, as the other character (no spoilers here, in case you haven't played it).

Nintendo recorded jumps in both Wii and DS sales during the first half of its business year, but cut its profit forecast in light of the sticky economic climate.
The company shifted 10.1 million Wii units worldwide during the first six months of the fiscal year, up 38% from last year, and said it expects to sell 27.5 million units during the year to March 2009.
During the same period the company sold 13.73 million DS units, up 3% despite the portable being on the market for four years.
The Japanese platform holder raked in net profit of 144.8 billion yen ($1.5 billion) between April and September, which may sound like a lot, but the figure fell short of the 165 billion yen Nintendo had predicted as the company was hit by the strong yen against the dollar.
On the back of the financial results the company cut its yearly profit forecast by 16% to 345 billion yen ($3.5 billion).
In comparison, Sony sold 2.43 million PS3s during the second quarter of its business year, up 85% from the same period last year, but its overall quarterly profit fell by 72% to $214 million.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is talking with the DSi development team again, this time examining some features that didn’t make the final cut. In one concept the Nintendo DSi had a single camera rotating camera, but this would have been expensive and Iwata was concerned it would make the DSi easier to break. We’re not missing anything since the DSi has two cameras anyway. These low resolution 640 x 480 cameras are actually 2.5x the resolution of the DS screen so the photos you take shouldn’t appear to be low quality, at least on your DSi.
We’re not getting a Nintendo DS with two DS game cartridge slots. Iwata notes this feature was in demand by internal Nintendo staff and customers. The original hardware plans for the DSi had two cartridge slots and Nintendo’s engineers even made a prototype with two slots for DS games. Why isn’t the DSi coming with two cartridge slots then? It made the system feel in Iwata’s words “big”. The prototype is said to have been 3 millimeters larger than the Nintendo DSi shipping in stores on Sunday.
What would you prefer? A “larger” DSi with two cartridge slots or the slim DSi with only one slot? I would go with the bigger one with two games.

Tecmo’s Play Shake is sort of like the Shooting Watch of waggling. This WiiWare title measures how fast you wave the Wii remote with a score that can be uploaded to online leaderboards via Nintendo Wi-Fi. Play Shake compares you with the world. Yes, the world which means Play Shake (temporary name) is most likely planned for an international release. Someday you’ll be able to get Play Shake and it’s collection of unspecified mini-games for 500 Wii Points ($5).

Those GameStop expo tipsters were right on the money: Nintendo are indeed releasing an Animal Crossing bundle for the holidays, which will see Animal Crossing: City Folk for the Wii bundled with the WiiSpeak microphone. How do we know this? Because it's on Amazon for $69.99. And as you can see from the ratings and name-change above, Australia (and most likely Europe) will be getting the same deal.

When old-timey Nintendo gamers cried out for more old-timey Nintendo games, I don't think Punch-Out was what people had in mind. Wasn't what I had in mind. I had F-Zero 16:9 and Return To Luigi's Mansion in mind. Ah well! Punch-Out it is, and despite the game looking so early you'd swear they cobbled it together in a post-E3 frenzy of appeasement and atonement, people are excited. Will the knowledge that Shigeru Miyamoto is "producer" of the game get you any more excited? Because he is. Course, he's only a producer, not the producer, so all he could be doing is rubber-stamping and putting his name on the box, but even that should be enough for many of you.

For those who felt let down, disappointed and even spurned by Nintendo's E3 2008 press conference, Nintendo UK exec David Yarnton wants you to know: Nintendo has never neglected core gamers. Sure, there might have been a brief lapse in memory, but neglect? Nope! Here's Yarnton in his own words:
It’s simply not true, Nintendo has never lost its passion for core gamers. Nintendo would like to bring smiles to as many different faces as possible and produce games which appeal to mainstream and gaming audiences worldwide.
