Nintendo's incredible success with the DS and Wii platforms in the last few years has been built in large measure on the expanded gaming audience and influx of more casual gamers. While the house that Mario built continues to crank out casual fare like Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Music, Wii Play and more, some in the core audience feel like they're being ignored.
The poor showing at this year's E3 didn't exactly do much to counter this notion either, although the recent Nintendo conference, which unveiled the upcoming Punch-Out, was more encouraging. That said, the hardcore fans want to know when they'll hear more about a new Mario, Zelda, Metroid and other key franchises.
Speaking to GameDaily BIZ, Nintendo's iconic Shigeru Miyamoto promised that Nintendo is currently hard at work on several games for this core audience.
"...for 30 years now I've been making games and for the vast majority of time I've been making the type of games that the loyal Nintendo fans enjoy. Those are the types of games that my career is based on and we're going to continue to make those types of games. In fact, we have many of those types of games in development right now," he assured us.

October 28th, 2008, 20:06 Posted By: wraggster
Released in November, 2006, the Nintendo Wii is revolutionary to say the least. With its innovative user interface, it has completely taken the world by storm by reinventing what video games are and who they are made for.
With nearly 30 million sold worldwide and over 160 million lifetime sales predicted (more than twice that of the Xbox 360 or PS3), Nintendo has clearly hit the ball out of the park.
Critics are raving, the crowds are cheering, it seems as though the once sagging console industry has been rejuvenated and ready to run at a blistering pace for years to come.
To this day, two years after launch, you still have a hard time finding a Wii in stores. But what consumers are lining up to buy isn’t the Wii, what they are buying is the idea and the dream of the Wii.
Consumers, many of whom have never played games before, have been picking up a Wii, enjoying it for a few weeks, and then watching it collect dust by their TV. They can’t explain why, but for some reason they just don’t play it anymore.
This is because the Wii has failed to deliver on the magic it promised.
A License to Dream
When I first heard about the Wii, I was completely ecstatic. Though the idea of movement-based controls are now obvious, at the time it was completely and utterly original. Such an idea had never even crossed the average gamer’s mind.
All we saw for the future was a jump from button-mashing to VR Headsets, with nothing in between. This first step off of the classic game controller was nothing short of mind blowing.
Everyone who watched in awe at the Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3) 2006 also watched their minds begin spinning with ideas. This is a godsend, we thought. We can do everything!
We can make fitness games that work your body, shooting games with actual movement, puzzle games with tactile interface, and much more. Truly, the Wii seemed like a license to dream anything.
But the ceiling was bound to appear.
Waggle: The Empty Promise
The principle failure of the Wii and its Wii remote is in its promise of immersion through movement. When many people imagine what playing the Wii would be like after seeing the commercials and experiences of other players, they imagine an incredibly immersive experience.
The movement based controls of the Wii hearken to a completely visceral play session, becoming one with the virtual world in front of them. We all drooled at the opportunity to dive behind couches in our living room to escape gunfire, being able to replicate a real tennis match without leaving the house, or having a sword fight that was even more real and tactile than the ones we had as children with wooden sticks.
It has been a disappointment, therefore, to see our promised virtual experience reduced to shaking the controller.
The problem is that waggling the Wii remote does not, in itself, add to a gameplay experience. If I want to open a virtual door and am asked to turn the Wii remote instead of pressing a button, that doesn’t make the experience more immersive.
While it may be novel once or twice, the simple movement itself does not enrich the game. In fact, it can become tedious and frustrating. Developers are just as guilty as players in this regard.
Creating one game after another that is essentially a recycled last-generation title, but with new Wii remote action, does not make it any different than the title was before.
The sad truth is that substituting Wii remote movement for a button press is nothing more than an empty promise. Upgrading to a new technology only to have the freshly minted fun evaporate after one run through is not technology well spent.
Looking Behind the Curtain
I remember teaching my cousin how to play Wii Tennis, and when he went to serve the ball, he lifted his left hand, the one not holding the Wii remote, to toss. At that moment, he didn’t understand how the Wii worked.
All he knew was that it was some sort of magical machine that mimicked your real life movements. It was a joyous occasion and a incredible exploratory experience.
But the innocence did not last long. Upon further experimentation, he learned how the controller worked, discovering that a quick snap of the wrist gave the same forehand as a loopy swing of his whole upper body. As the initial amazement wore off, Wii Tennis became simply another video game.
When the public imagined what was possible with the Wii, we imagined complete, full-on physical experiences akin to backyard football. Perhaps, we thought, you may even get a little bruised up in a game on the Wii, playing with competitive friends.
Many of the early press responses to the Wii held this view, with parents saying that they enjoy it because it gets them and their kids off the couch. But to say that you think the Wii gets you off the couch is to reveal a naive understanding of its fundamental gameplay.
Sure, it may get kids off the couch, but when they’ll be doing off the couch is flicking their wrists, not playing basketball.
The limitations of the Wii remote’s accelerometer (even with Wii Motion Plus) reveal it to be far short of the dream machine that players were pining over. The necessary later release of Wii Fit shows that Nintendo developers have come to terms with the limitations of the Wii remote by itself.
Wii Fit may be fantastic for those who want exercise, but it’s too specialized of a peripheral to do much for those who want to explore the virtual worlds present in other games, but in a more immersive way. We wanted the Wii remote to satisfy our needs outside of exercise, too.
What We Bought Vs. What We Have
The Nintendo Wii is an elegant symphony of hardware, software, marketing, and imagination. At first glance, it appears that it can do everything you could think of, an experience full of promise.
Everyone loves the idea of the Wii. The idea of a totally immersive experience. The idea of games that are more like kickball and less like Tetris. The idea of entering a brand new world. But after some time, we learn that we have purchased nothing more than a shakable A-button.
Without doubt, future console releases and peripherals will attempt to satisfy us further. The Wii has made a great leap forward, but those who think we have already arrived are mistaken.

A new beta release of Dolphin the Gamecube and Nintendo Wii Emulator for Windows has been released.
Dolphin is a Gamecube emulator. It also has preliminary support for Wii and basic Triforce emulation (this is pending a commit, and does not run games yet).
Gamecube compatibility is about the same (or worse, due to various core changes and lack of subsequent compatibility work) as previous releases.
Wii compatibility is very low. Some games show their intro movies, that's it. There is preliminary Wiimote emulation but it does not work yet.

Mednafen has been updated today with a new release, heres the changelog:
0.8.A:
NES: Cleaned up the iNES loading code a bit, and added support for WRAM on a few mappers that nominally shouldn't
have WRAM, enabled if the battery-backed bit is set in the iNES header. Fixes "Family BASIC", and probably
a few bootleg games as well.
NES: Added partially-broken support for mapper 163.
NES: Added support for mapper 241.
Fixed string constant-to-(char *) problems in drivers/cheat.cpp
Added setting "osd.state_display_time", to control the length of time, in milliseconds, the save state/movie
screen is displayed after selecting a save state or movie.
The most recently-saved save state slot will now be colored differently when selecting a save state slot.
Increased the brightness of non-empty save state slots.
Empty save state slots are now black instead of being partially transparent.
PC-FX: Fixed bugs in "Play Audio Track Index" and "Read Subchannel" MMC commands, fixing the totally broken
cinematic sequences in "Boundary Gate". There may still be bugs in these commands that don't cause any known
problems with games, so I will need to run tests on a real system.
GBA: An error loading the custom colormap file is now treated as fatal.
Win32: The German and Russian translation files are now included in the Win32 precompiled binary distribution
ZIP file. Note that Mednafen always assumes the locale to be UTF-8, so the stdio.txt file will need to be
opened with a viewer that can handle UTF-8(though filenames with non-7-bit-ASCII components will appear fubar).
(I am aware that assuming the locale's character encoding to always be UTF-8 is a design flaw with
various insidious consequences when the encoding is not UTF-8).
Updated the Russian translation with the translation done by rubicon.
Added configure script option "--enable-altivec/--disable-altivec (default: enabled)" for compiling on
PowerPC architectures where AltiVec is not supported, or causes problems. This configure script option is
untested, however.
Input for the virtual device on virtual port N will be disabled when the buttons on the virtual device on virtual
port N are being configured. The last button pressed when in button configuration may still be taken as
virtual device input, however(a fix for this would be too invasive, and so will be done in the 0.9.x unstable
tree).
PCE: Added several missing input-related state variables to save states, fixing several netplay/movie
desynchronization issues under certain situations.
Fixed a bug when creating an SDL source surface, whose negative effects(clipping rightmost columns) could be
triggered when the "sdl" vdriver setting was used with certain xscale and yscale settings that would
cause a 1:1 pixel copy operation.
PC-FX: Improved PSG LFO emulation again(Tyoushin Heiki Zeroigar uses it for some sound effects, other
games likely use it as well in similar roles).
PCE: Improved PSG LFO emulation again(Hanii in the Sky, Juuouki, and Flash Hiders use LFO).
PCE: Altered the Street Fighter 2 autodetection code to be data-agnostic. The SF2 mapper will now be enabled for
any ROM images 2MiB and over in size.
Fixed a call to putenv(), to pass a static character array initialized to a string constant instead of a string
constant directly.
Fixed a few argument descriptions(invoked with the -help command-line switch) that weren't properly gettextized.
Debugger: Fixed a bug in the trace log code. It would cause the emulator to lock up if the user pressed
Enter/Return in the prompt popup without any text in the input field.
SMS: Removed the old unused Z80 emulator code from when SMS Plus was assimilated.

Do you still have Yggdra Union for the GBA? Don’t pawn it on eBay just yet. Sting has a special surprise for people who own Yggdra Union and Knights in the Nightmare. If you have Yggdra Union plugged into your GBA slot while playing Knights in the Nightmare you can unlock the mysterious which Pamela. She’s a high level priestess in Sting’s DS game and the reason the GBA/DS Knights in the Nightmare Dept. Heaven Episodes series combo pack makes sense for fans.
I always thought special GBA unlocks were neat since they aren’t common. Since the DSi doesn’t have a GBA slot and the GBA has been dead to publishers for years, these types of special bonuses are a thing of the past.

North America seems satiated with ways to download movies and TV shows. You can get episodes of South Park from the Xbox Live Marketplace and Spider Man movies on the PlayStation Network. The Wii is the only console that doesn’t have a digitally distributed entertainment solution in North America. Funny because the tables are turned in Japan. The Wii is getting a content delivery service there via WiiWare this December while the Xbox Live Video Marketplace is barren and the PlayStation Store only has anime.
Fujisoft’s Minna no Theater Wii (Everybody’s Theater Wii) will give users access to anime, TV dramas, and movies for 500 Wii Points ($5). Seeing the online content will cost an additional fee unspecified by Fujisoft at this time. Fujisoft hasn’t outlined any specific titles either so it’s hard to evaluate their online theater program. Instead we’ll look at their mascot characters. Poskin, the mailbox, really takes your requests to Fujisoft.

Newly released today:
Venture into the randomly generated dungeons and retrieve the townsfolks's memories. This is an RPG worth playing a thousand times.
In the previously released Wii version, we see things from Choco's point of view, but in this new DS version, we can see what Cid does when Choco is busy retrieving memories for the town's inhabitants.
Aside from a fuller story with Cid's mode, there is the highly popular card game which captured the hearts of many gamers in the older version. With a new system, the games are more challenging than ever.
The Wi-Fi mode of the card game is designed to be compatible with Chocobo to Mahou no Ehon which is currently still in development, so look forward to the new game as well.

Then get ready to shake an extra Benjamin out of your wallet, as pre-orders for the Japanese release of the Nintendo DSi currently carry an "import tax" of about one hundred U.S. dollars. Regularly priced at 18,900 yen (a hair over $200 USD) in its home country of Japan, the DSi asking price from reputable import retailers like Play-Asia and YesAsia is currently $299.99.
New York import shop NCSX hasn't specified its import price, with the retailer still finalizing with overseas distributors.
While the Nintendo DSi isn't planning on landing on these shores "well into 2009," before import fever gets the best of you, we should note that some software for the system will be region locked. If you still must the first kid on your block (or row of cubicles) to have one, we'd suggest waiting just a little bit for demand to taper. But, hey, we know we're not the boss of you.
