Times are tough! And when times are tough, standard theory on the essentials in life maintains that we need three things to survive. Food, clothing, and shelter. We get those three, we're doing OK. But Nintendo never got anywhere adhering to standard theories! Which is why it shouldn't surprise you too much to see/hear Shigeru Miyamoto saying that, after eating, he believes the most important thing in life is the "enrichment of our souls". Somehow, we doubt he's talking about art and the opera. So remember, kids, when the credit crunch hits your household, forget the mortgage/rent and new shoes; get yourself Wii Music instead!

We've had some pretty major Weekly Wii updates over the past few months, so it's about time we take it down a notch and give our Wii points a little rest, isn't it? Today sees the release of two WiiWare titles and two Virtual Console classics that we could really give or take. I suppose the multiplayer online of Tetris Party for WiiWare (1200 points) is somewhat exciting, as is the prospect of somehow controlling Tetris with your Wii Balance Board, but nothing we're in a hurry to check out. Digital Leisure brings us The Incredible Maze (500 points), another Balance Board compatible title that has you navigating...incredible mazes. Okay!
On the virtual console side of things we have two TruboGrafx16 titles, futuristic boxing title Digital Champ Battle Boxing (700 points), and Gradius Gofer No Yabou (900 points), the CD-ROM sequel to the original shooter classic, and probably the most exciting game of the week as far as we're concerned. See anything you'll be picking up?

Nintendo loves the ladies, and they'll be proving it tomorrow and Wednesday with their strong presnece at the 5th Annual Women's Conference in Southern California. Hosted by California's first lady Maria Shriver, the Women's Conference celebrates the power of women to make a difference in their communities. Let's see what Nintendo has going on at the conference:
Conference-goers can take a break and get some exercise with Wii Fit, jam to some of their favorite tunes with Wii Music or learn some new recipes and great cooking tips with the new Personal Trainer: Cooking.
A cooking game? Really? Yes ladies, you too can be a powerful instrument of social change, after Nintendo teaches you how to make delicious sammiches.

Imagine someone planted a bomb in the heart of Championship Vinyl, blowing record fragments across several blocks of downtown Chicago. If you went along and picked up 50-odd pieces of those shattered albums and then glued them together, what you compiled would still not be as random as the Japanese track list for Wii Music, which you can read right here. Here are a few examples:
"Do-Re-Mi" by Rodgers and Hammerstein (from The Sound of Music)
"La Cucaracha"" the Spanish folk song
"The Entertainer" by Billy Joel
...and so on. We thought maybe we had just gotten an odd slice, but no. They're all that bizarre. Not bad, mind you. Just really, really out of left field. The kicker is, we still can't tell if this makes us more or less excited for the game.

Fans eager to engage in some voice-activated, real-time strategy on their favorite handheld systems ... will have little interest in the rest of this post! Ubisoft has detailed the PSP and DS versions of Tom Clancy's EndWar -- both of which launch alongside their bigger console brothers on November 4th -- and made it apparent that warmongers on the go are in for a markedly different experience.
Developed by Funatics Software, the portable pair presents "turn-based strategy with a twist," allowing simultaneous move and attack phases which render the experience as intense and authentic as real-time strategy -- it says here. Other relevant features include three campaigns, over 20 units per faction, a two-player versus multiplayer mode, a mission editor, stylus controls on the Nintendo DS and, judging by the screenshots, somewhat less realistic graphics. Who knew advanced wars could be so colorful?

Luke described his experience with Dead Rising Wii at TGS as "a complete waste of time." Well, Luke, did you know you weren't playing the final build of the game? Capcom Community Sr. Manager Seth Killian told Nintendo Everything the build everyone has seen so far is old and just a tech demo, and that the final game will have more zombies and other "notable changes."
"I haven’t played the final build, so I dunno if it’s going to be 3000% different, but I have seen screenshots, and yes, there are more zombies on the screen and a few other notable changes. I can’t promise the moon without having actually played it, but I’m not trying to double-talk you here. The TGS build is not the final game, and there do appear to be some positive changes going forward.”
I get to see Dead Rising Wii on Wednesday, but I'm not expecting to see the "final build" either. Hopefully somebody gets to see it before the game's scheduled release in January. Until then, we'll keep drinking our haterade.

SouthPeak's Ninjatown is just a week away, but for gamers who don't want to wait, the demo is now available as a free download via the Nintendo Channel (in North America) on Wii. Assume the role of Ol' Master Ninja and lead your Ninja troops against the invading Wee Devils in an all-out battle to determine the fate of Ninjatown.
The demo of Ninjatown includes the first six maps from the game. Players can get a glimpse at the level of depth and strategy in the game as they fight against the Wee Devils with just a sampling of the Ninjas and special abilities. In the full retail version of the game, there will be a total of thirty-six maps, and over a dozen abilities and tokens to unleash on Mr. Demon and the evil masses.
For those who don't know, the process to download the Ninjatown demo is simple: First make sure you are opted in on your Wii to send data to Nintendo, then select the demo from the Ninjatown info page on Nintendo Channel, and the Wii will instruct you to turn on your DS and select "Download Play" from the system menu.
Players can also visit http://create.ninjatown.com to create their own Ninjas with the Wee Ninjatron, which can then be shared with their friends via Facebook, MySpace and more. Ninjatown is rated E for Everyone.

News/release from Abcd1234
Well, after spending the entire summer doing basically nothing with this thing, this last weekend I had a bit of inspiration and built ports for the two major NetHack variants, SporkHack, and Slash'EM. Now, these are *definitely* ALPHA releases... I've barely had a chance to do any playtesting with these things. But I figured, I might as well get them out there now and see if any low hanging fruit is caught.
Enjoy!
Oh, and BTW, tile support in SporkHack is broken, primarily because the monster list has changed in that port, and no one, to my knowledge, has created a tileset for it.

Over at Wiibrew info has been posted on what seems to be an official Nintendo Repair/Back up disc, heres the info:
The "Wii Backup Disc" is a service disc apparently used inside Official Nintendo Repair shops to transfer personal data like savegames and console settings between Wiis as part of a repair.
It's not entirely clear what it does; something it does *not* do -- even though it appears it might -- is allow VC games to be transferred between consoles. Instead, the user is told to redownload the games from the Wii Store (for free).
Note: "Change WiiId" is mostly useless. WiiId is only used as your "Wii Number" that you give to your friends so they can send you Wii Mail. When you pick it, it assigns you a new random ID.
It also doesn't boot on full bricked Wiis and it's unlikely that it repairs half bricked Wiis since delete all only deletes savegames/settings and not any VC content (Weather/News/Games..) or the firmware.

The sound of trumpets, the clash of cymbals and the thunder of drums herald today's launch of Wii Music. Just as Wii Sports attracted millions of new players to the world of video games and Wii Fit showed people that fitness could be fun, Wii Music creates a whole new genre in video games, one that lets players have fun experimenting with music as they strive to produce fun, masterful arrangements.
"Music is a universal language that inspires and moves people," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Wii Music provides a fun way for people to play together and be entertained while building a fundamental understanding of musical themes and rhythms. Wii Music can motivate people to learn real instruments or enhance their appreciation of musical performances."
Wii Music brings more than 60 instruments to your living room, where you're free to experiment with them in a variety of different ways. Unlike other music video games, Wii Music lets you put your own spin on songs. It's all about improvisation, creativity and fun. The goal is to explore your inner musician to find creative and interesting new blends of instruments, tempos and styles.
To play each instrument, you use the motion-sensing abilities of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to mimic the real-life motions of instruments: bow a violin, strike a vibraphone or pluck a sitar. The controllers know if you're playing fast or slow, hitting the notes gently or really jamming. Musical novices can understand how to play and start carrying a tune instantly, while people who are really into music will have fun creating mixes, rearranging tunes and sharing them with friends.
Songs in the Wii Music catalog can be rearranged with different instruments for a virtually endless variety of sounds. Imagine putting a reggae spin on Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" or turning pop favorites like "Every Breath You Take" or "Please Mr. Postman" into heavy metal tunes. The song list contains everything from American classics like "The Entertainer" to international favorites like "La Cucaracha." Video game fans will find several Nintendo favorites, like the themes from Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and even Wii Sports.
Wii Music builds on the social gaming trend that Nintendo has pioneered. Not only can up to four musicians jam together on the same song, but once you've created your masterpiece, you can send it electronically to friends and family members who have Wii Music so that they can bask in your musical mastery. After they've had a listen, they can take your arrangement and add their own flavor to it with new instruments or a different tempo and send it back to you. This allows you to jam together even if you are miles apart.
Finally, Wii Music includes a variety of mini-games that let players create music videos, conduct an orchestra, play in a handbell choir, test their musical ears or even rock out on a virtual drum set. Drum Mode lets you use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers as drumsticks to play like you have a real-life drum set. Drummers who purchase Wii Fit separately also can use the Wii Balance Board accessory as virtual pedals for the bass drum and the hi-hat cymbal. But the basic Wii Music experience does not require any extra accessories. All 60+ instruments and 50+ songs are included at an MSRP of just $49.99.
Remember that the Wii console features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other Wii features, visit Wii.com.
