Nintendo hopes its 3DS handheld will do the talking when it comes to convincing gamers of its merits.
It's been hard to get the glasses-free visuals message across through traditional marketing methods, game developer legend Shigeru Miyamoto told Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata in the latest Iwata Asks interview.
"The Nintendo 3DS system is sometimes said to just be a 'Nintendo DS system with higher specs'. But it's really much more than that," Miyamoto said.
"It's a gaming system with an entirely different charm. That's why, for the customers who purchase it, I want them to fully enjoy the features of this new machine."
The Nintendo 3DS expands on the DS with more impressive graphics and new communication features that enable local and online sharing with other 3DS owners.
But it is the 3D visuals that have captured most attention – and given Nintendo its biggest headache.
"The greatest charm of the Nintendo 3DS system, including the 3D images, is very difficult to convey just through the TV or the internet," Iwata said. "Of course, we have tried very hard to do so, and we did our very best in the demonstrations. But I think it would be most ideal for the people who purchase it to try to tell others what they like about it."
This, according to Miyamoto, is why the Nintendo 3DS has pre-installed software, such as augmented reality games, a 3D camera, a sound editor and a Mii Maker.
"It's like the hardware itself is an eloquent orator," he said.
"Now it's a matter of how far we can reach beyond that."
Iwata and Miyamoto shared a recent encounter facilitated by the Nintendo 3DS' StreetPass tech.
"I got your Mii character on my Nintendo 3DS system before I knew it," Miyamoto said. "We did walk past each other somewhere in the company, so it wasn't unexpected in any way. But it made me happy nonetheless! It made me say, 'Oh, look! It's Iwata-san!'"
"People will understand what we mean once they experience it," he continued. "I really want everyone to see for themselves. I'm sure that if they get to use StreetPass in a huge country like America, it'll be even more fun." The Nintendo 3DS, which goes on sale in Europe on 25th March, has already sold close to 400,000 units in Japan.

Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto has discussed the difficulties of marketing the new 3DS console through traditional media, while insisting that the 3D display is not the console's only selling point.
Taking part in another Iwata Asks interview, Miyamoto complain that: "The Nintendo 3DS system is sometimes said to just be a 'Nintendo DS system with higher specs'. But it's really much more than that."
"It's a gaming system with an entirely different charm. That's why, for the customers who purchase it, I want them to fully enjoy the features of this new machine," he insisted.
Although the glasses-free stereoscopic 3D is the system's most important feature it is impossible to illustrate directly in print or video. Nintendo has resisted trying to illustrate the 3D effect alone using 3D glasses.
"The greatest charm of the Nintendo 3DS system, including the 3D images, is very difficult to convey just through the TV or the internet," said Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.
"Of course, we have tried very hard to do so, and we did our very best in the demonstrations. But I think it would be most ideal for the people who purchase it to try to tell others what they like about it."
The 3DS comes with a large amount of pre-installed software, including two augmented reality games and a 3D camera - features which Nintendo hopes will sell the console's features through word of mouth.
"It's like the hardware itself is an eloquent orator," said Miyamoto "You're right. It's an eloquent hardware," agreed Iwata.
Miyamoto also hopes that the StreetPass feature, which can automatically send Miis and other data to nearby 3DS owners, will help to illustrate the other features of the console.
"People will understand what we mean once they experience it," he said. "I really want everyone to see for themselves. I'm sure that if they get to use StreetPass in a huge country like America, it'll be even more fun."

Details on France's launch allocation of new handheld the 3DS have emerged, following yesterday's reports of possible UK and Germany shipment numbers.
French site Puissance Nintendo ('Nintendo Power') believes the territory will receive 100,000 3DS SKUs at launch - split evenly between the blue and black versions. While this has not been verified by Nintendo, the site has assuredGamesIndustry.biz that the data came from trusted sources in French videogame wholesale.
By contrast, rumour has it the UK will receive in the region of 185,000 units and Germany less than 100,000. Japan is confirmed to have received 400,000 units at launch, with a further 1.1 million due to arrive over March.
In total, Nintendo expects to ship 4 million 3DS units worldwide in March. If all the reported figures are correct, up to 1.89 million launch units remain for all other territories - including the US.
Puissance Nintendo also has breakdowns on numbers for the initial 3DS software line-up in France, which range from 150,000 units for Nintendogs+Cats (across three variants) to just 15,000 for Ridge Racer 3D.
The alleged game shipments in full are as follows:- 150,000 Nintendogs + Cats
- 60,000 Rayman 3D
- 40,000 Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition
- 40,000 Rabbids 3D
- 35 000 PES 2011
- 35 000 Asphalt 3D
- 30,000 Sims 3
- 20,000 Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
- 20,000 Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon : Shadow Wars
- 20,000 Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D
- 17,500 Pilotwings Resort
- 16,000 Lego Star Wars 3
- 15,000 Ridge Racer 3D
These, nor the UK and Germany numbers, have not been publicly confirmed by Nintendo or any retailer as yet.

Check out this trailer of Ubisoft's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory 3D on 3DS.
The dark footage shows lead character Sam Fisher dispensing of unsuspecting guards at the familiar lighthouse scene we remember from the Xbox original years ago.
The game will be a remake of Chaos Theory, in which Sam Fisher is on the trail of the Masse Kernels used by former Georgian President Kombayn Nikoladze to attack America's infrastructure.
It looks like it will use 3D presentation on the visual overlay feature introduced in Splinter Cell: Conviction. Check out these screens to see for yourself.

Nintendo Entertainment Systems have proven to be fertile ground for the DIY community -- purses, guitars, and belt buckles are just a sampling of the more unusual NES mods out there. We've also seen our share of NES PCs, and now an enterprising Finn going by the name Ana-5000 has crammed a fully-fledged home theater PC into everybody's favorite 8-bit console. An Asus AT3IONT-I Deluxe motherboard with an Intel Atom 330 dual-core processor and an NVIDIA Ion GPU provides the computing power and offers HDMI and VGA ports, six USB 2.0 ports, optical and RCA audio connections, integrated 802.11b/g/n wireless and Gigabit ethernet, and Bluetooth connectivity. Ana-5000 gave the repurposed Nintendo a fresh black and white paint-job to set it apart from your garden variety NES as well. Hit up the Source link for pics and an explanation of the entire mod process if you feel like doing some console recycling yourself.

There's no doubt that watching 3D movie trailers on your 3DS is going to make you look like some sort of future spaceman. But what good is it if you can only show off on your own Wi-Fi network?
Nintendo has heard your pleas, and will allow 3DS users free access to over 10,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots by late May, Reggie Fils-Amie announced today during the company's GDC keynote.
Why yes, Starbucks patron, that is a 3D trailer for Must Love Dogs. Thanks so much for noticing.

While handheld breathalyzers are pretty novel to have around while drinking with friends, there’s nothing exciting about a $50 off the shelf unit. If you really want to grab people’s attention, you have to get creative and built something like [Batsly Adams] and his friends did.
One evening, he was casually drinking with some friends and playing around with an electronic alcohol sensor. They quickly put together a NES ROM that would play sounds, changing the pitch depending on how much alcohol the sensor detected. It quickly became apparent to them that a full-fledged breathalyzer video game was in order. In no time, he and his friends had compiled graphics, a soundtrack, and the code to drive their game, DrunkenNES.
To play the game, each player must blow into a gutted NES cartridge that has been fitted with the alcohol sensor. The Nintendo computes the player’s BAC, reporting how intoxicated they are using simple graphics and cheesy animal puns. We don’t know when the code and schematics will be made available, but when they are, you can guarantee we will be building one for “research” purposes to pair with our Power Hour shot glass.
Keep reading to see some in game video of DrunkenNES
[Thanks Adam]

We survived the keynote address here at GDC 2011, where Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime just got done revealing a veritable cornucopia of info about the 3DS. On the video content front, the 3DS will get Netflix this summer along with the ability to pause a video on your handheld and continue watching on your Wii -- though we presume you may recommence your cinematic experience on an XBox or PS3 too. The addition of Netflix wasn't the only announcement by Iwata, however. Get the rest after the break.

The UK should have enough 3DS launch stock to go around - but GAME has warned that if excitement builds then sell-outs are a real possibility.
GamesIndustry.biz reports that around 185,000 3DS handhelds are being allocated to the UK, which seems to be the most generous slice in Europe.
"There seems to be enough stock for launch," a GAME spokesperson said, "but if everybody who is excited about the product buys it, there probably will be stores (not just GAME or gamestation) that sell out."
"We're expecting queues for the launch of the 3DS, both for GAME and gamestation stories, when they open. The 3DS... has the potential for a huge following, and therefore a huge sell-through."
The Nintendo 3DS launches here on 25th March.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has announced a "brand new" Mario game for Nintendo 3DS.
It will "incorporate the new opportunity of 3DS", promised the Nintendo president during his Game Developers Conference keynote this afternoon.
The game is being developed by the team that made the Super Mario Galaxy games for Wii.
He showed one slide with four screenshots of the new game. A bright, colourful and recognisable 3D Mario world was visible.
The logo simply referred to the game as Super Mario, although a tail was attached to the letter O.
"You may wonder what this indicates," Iwata teased. "We will reveal this at E3 this year."

A worldwide 3DS update will roll out in late May that adds the DSiWare service and the ability to transfer your existing DSiWare games to 3DS, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has announced.
The Nintendo 3DS web browser and eShop will also be added.
At the eShop you will be able to buy Virtual Console games - like old Game Boy, Game Boy Colour, GameGear and TurboGrafx games - as well as 3D Classics, which are fully remastered 3D versions of old games. Which old games, however, Fils-Aime didn't say.
The eShop, he added, offers an "unparalleled ability to promote your work". "I think that spells win win for everyone," he added.
Reggie Fils-Aime also confirmed Nintendo 3DS video recording - in 3D. "The promise is great," he said. "It could mean a birthday party, a family vacation or your night on the town, with you as your own producer, director, operating in 3D."

The Nintendo 3DS conversion of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will be released in June, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has revealed.
He didn't specify during his Game Developers Conference keynote whether that was a worldwide date or for North America only.
"Last year marked the 25th anniversary of Super Mario, this year it's the 25th of Legend of Zelda," said Iwata, who's planning a big celebration for all Zelda fans. Maybe he'll dress up.
Iwata went on to show a new video for Wii game The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

German retail may be facing limited stock for the European launch of the 3DS later this month.
Sources have indicated to GamesIndustry.biz Germany that the territory is to receive units in the "maximum mid-five figure range." Larger branches of major retail chains are expected to receive around 100 consoles each.
By contrast, UK sources close to the matter have suggested that Nintendo may ship over 185,000 units here - which would be in excess of the original Sony PlayStation Portable's launch figures.
No numbers have been officially confirmed as yet, but a GAME spokeperson told GamesIndustry.biz that in the UK "There seems to be enough stock for launch - but if everybody who is excited about the product buys it, there probably will be stores (not just GAME or gamestation) that sell out."
In addition, "We're expecting queues for the launch of the 3DS, both for GAME and gamestation stories, when they open. The 3DS... has the potential for a huge following, and therefore a huge sell-through."
Germany, meanwhile, has seen little marketing for the handheld as yet, and retail sources claim to have had meagre data about stock expectations.
"Nintendo failed to give us any information about the initial shipment of 3DS," said a German buyer toGamesIndustry.biz Germany. "As usual with hardware launches, we are expecting less - rather than more - units on day one. We expect several phone conferences this week in which the initial shipment should be fixed."
Claimed another: "It is understandable that Nintendo is pretty quiet in marketing in order not to overheat expectations. They probably think that the initial shipment will be completely sold out to hardcore gamers who already know the product."
Meanwhile, Amazon.de has now limited 3DS orders to one per customer, although other retailers such as GameStop are yet to impose such limitations.
Thomas Adler, head of sales at major retail chain Media Markt Bayreuth did not expect a repeat of the long queues seen at the 3DS' Japanese launch, but "assume[d] that we have enough product."
"If we recall the launch of the DS, the sales began relatively slow," he continued. Then as now, he felt, "important titles are missing." Because of this, "the high fixed pricing and the competitive situation with the iPhone and iPad...I think this situation is very, very dangerous for Nintendo."
Nintendo's German office declined to give shipment numbers. What is confirmed is that the US and Europe will share 2.5 million consoles over March, with another 1.5 million going to Japan. Almost 400,000 of the latter have already been confirmed as sold.

Nintendo has confirmed that the eShop update promised for 3DS will arrive in May.
This major update will finally add the eShop to the console, which will let you download DSiWare games, give you access to new Game Boy and Game Boy Color Virtual Console games, along with Game Gear and TurboGrafx-16 systems.
You'll also be to download and watch Hollywood movie trailers in 3D.
The update will add the ability for DSi owners to transfer their DSiWare purchases over to their 3DS.
Nintendo's also announced that the eShop will give you access to '3D Classics', which it says "will introduce select classic video games remastered in 3D."

For a man who hadn’t once used the word iPhone in his hour-long GDC lecture, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata still managed to publicly tear into the Apple smartphone empire.
“Rather than offer you a rosy picture of our industry, I would like to discuss three concerns,” he said at the concluding stages of his keynote speech.
Iwata glided through his first and second concern, but the final one he embellished on with the kind of provocative language that, at times, seemed extraordinary for a leading Japanese businessman.
“Game development is drowning,” he declared.
The Nintendo boss recalled that in his 2005 GDC keynote, the audience were developers of many systems, but not commonly mobile devices.
“But today, it may be the majority of you developers who are making mobile games,” he said.
“It gives me concern.”
And, just a stone’s throw from the venue of Apple’s iPad 2 press conference, Iwata exposed his long-harboured dislike of the mobile gaming market unequivocally.
“These platforms have no motivation to maintain the value of the gaming,” he said.
“Quantity is how they profit. The value of software does not matter to them.”
By “them”, he wasn’t simply referring to Apple. Google and Facebook were too the target of his attack.
Speaking to the packed crowd of industry professionals, he claimed that the business of game design is more perilous than ever.
“With so many consoles to publish games on, it is already so hard to attain visibility and status,” he said, before explaining that mobile market is only making life harder.
Citing Forbes data, Iwata claimed that 92 per cent of mobile app downloads are for free content. He said that, in the oceanic smartphone games market, the chance to be visible – and the opportunity to make a living – is remarkably low.
It’s a very confusing time for people. There’s not much stability, he said.
“It confirms for us that our world is changing.”
But Nintendo insists that one defining value remains – “Content is king.”
Quality of product is still distinguishes success from failure, he said.
“But will that still be the case moving forward?” he asked. “Is maintaining high-quality games a top priority, or not?”
Iwata said the only constant in a shifting games industry should be the primary need for quality content.
“Without content, there is no industry,” he said.
This was, make no mistake, Iwata’s declaration that the firm will not join the smartphone race or the $0.99 business. It will not spend three months building a game and then add to it thereafter.
“We really want consumers to appreciate the premium value of content,” he said. “What we make is valuable, and we should protect that value.”

Nintendo president admits download services 'have not operated as well as they should have'
Satoru Iwata has admitted that Nintendo has been disappointed in the performance of its downloadable games services.
During his keynote speech at GDC 2011 in San Francisco, the Nintendo president said: “To date, our WiiWare and DSiWare services have not operated as well as they should have.”
The Wii’s games download service was first launched in May 2008, while its handheld equivalent debuted with the Nintendo DSi in 2009. Both have had criticial successes, but no titles have taken off commercially in the same way that some XBLA and PSN titles.
Iwata claimed the 3DS would change Nintendo’s digital fortunes, and then introduced Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime to explain how.
Fils-Aime highlighted three 3DS features that would help drive the use of Nintendo’s download services and other digital functions: the Spot Pass function, the wide range of eShop content and wi-fi access.

Newly Dropped in Price (on worldwide import)
This wont interest most of you, but to those of you like me who brought their Wii from the USA and have a load of games that are no good unless if you have a working US Wii, then this may be a saviour, my us wii has been broke for ages which renders 30 games unplayable, thankfully superufo.com will ship this as a sample or whatever to avoid customs (by air mail to avoid), you do pay more this way however. one reason i hate consoles that arent region free.

WiiGait is not a political scandal, it’s a project that records motion data while walking. [Bilal Chishti] and [Zassa Kavuma] are strapping a Wii remote onto each leg and recording the sensor data while making video of the walker at the same time. The two are using an Ubuntu box to pull the sensor data from the Bluetooth-enabled devices and utilizing its built-in webcam for the video. They graph the data for each axis and we’re sure that syncing up data anomalies with the video is just a matter of matching timestamps.
So what good is this? The creators are keeping us in the dark about an end-goal for collected data; this may just be for the experience of using the hardware. But we could see it having uses in making distance runners more efficient, or teaching that bipedal robot how to balance.

Encourage your kids to play with their food by making a cake that looks like a toy. The Nintendo DS lookalike houses some electronics to spruce up the presentation. The upper panel is cardboard covered in frosting to tie it in with the edible lower sections. That cardboard panel hides a couple of LEDs that blink thanks to a blinking Christmas light bulb in series with the diodes. There is also an LCD screen backlight in the form of to CCFL bulbs. The screen is just a still image but that’s okay, you can’t expect an actual video screen to be built into this. Take a look at the clip after the break to see the internals.
We’ve looked in on a few other cake hacks in the past. If you missed them before now’s your chance to revisit the gantry-based frosting dispenser and the turn-table frosting injector with silver-orb detailing. These are some sweet hacks!
