Bolt Thrower v0.36 by Titmouse
Bolt Thrower is currently single player Space Shoot 'Em Up. It’s still work in progress & hopefully a new version will be release once every 2 to 4 weeks. Every effort is being made to detach game data from the code, being 'data driven' anyone can change the look or functionality of the game. Basically a XML configuration file is used rather than hard coded data that’s locked into the code - that would just be plain silly. Please submit your ideas, bug reports or anything else via the discussion page if you wish to help in some way.
Version 0.36 of Bolt Thrower is now released - bit of a push to get my release under the 2MB file upload limit, not yet had the chance to look for somewhere else to store my submissions. Had to resize the space backdrop from 1024 to 800 pixels in width. I'll jpeg it for my next release to bring it back to the full 1024, while I'm at it I'll replace the sounds with mp3's using the libmad - MPEG audio decoder library, should help improve things.

Supermarket Morrisons will stop selling the Nintendo 3DS for £187 this Sunday, ONM reports.
Morrisons had offered the lowest Nintendo 3DS price available in the UK before Amazon.co.ukmatched it earlier this week.
As ONM notes, Morrisons had been selling the Nintendo 3DS for £197, so it'll probably go back up to that price on Sunday.
To get the Nintendo 3DS for £187 from Morrisons you have to lay down a 10 pound deposit.
UK shops are scrambling to get your business in what is expected to be the biggest game console launch ever.
Shop GAME will give you a trade-in price of £190 on the £196.99 Nintendo 3DS if you bring it back within a month of buying it.
If you want to trade for cash, you'll get £180 – effectively meaning the Nintendo 3DS, which goes on sale on 25th March, costs £17 to rent for a month from GAME.

You've seen Super Mario evolve from a modest 2D sprite into a 3D world-exploring superhero mechanic, but have you ever seen life through his eyes? Here's your opportunity, as a fanmade animation treats us to a first-person view of the intrepid Italian's adventures through the familiar World 1-1. There are kill streaks, achievements like "headbanger" and "pole dancer," and some extremely realistic sound effects to set the mood.

March 18th, 2011, 22:49 Posted By: wraggster
Reggie Fils-Aime has said that Nintendo will not be doing any business with what he called "garage developers" in the near future, seemingly underlining the company position set out in Satoru Iwata's GDC keynote earlier this month.
Whilst the Nintendo of America president was keen to point out that Nintendo very much wants to engage with indie devs, he drew an analogy with the music industry to deliniate between small, professional studios and part-time developers, calling them "hobbyists."
"I would separate out the true independent developer vs. the hobbyist," Fils-Aime told Gamasutra. "We are absolutely reaching out to the independent developer. Where we've drawn the line is we are not looking to do business today with the garage developer. In our view, that's not a business we want to pursue.
"Look at the music industry. There are certainly highly talented people who work other jobs and have a passion to be in the music industry. They work at it. There are reality TV shows that revolve around this concept. I love it when there's a game that's found that captures people's imagination, just like that...singer toiling in a factory."
The attitude seems to fly in the face of the efforts of Microsoft's attempts to engage up and coming developers with the likes of XNA and the newly released Kodu. It also seems like something of a contrary position against the background of the success of the App Store.
What it does echo is Iwata's GDC keynote, in which he took a thinly-veiled swipe at Apple and the App Store by insinuating that Apple had not exercised the proper quality control which a responsible platform holder might in order to protect its developers, instead allowing quantity to swamp quality in its market.
"We make platforms designed to demonstrate the high value of high quality videogame software," said Iwata. "But, there is a second, entirely different way to consider the value of software. The objective of smartphones and social networks, and the reason they were created, are not at all like ours.
"These platforms have no motivation to maintain the high value of videogame software - for them, content is something created by someone else. Their goal is just to gather as much software as possible, because quantity is what makes the money flow - the value of videogame software does not matter to them."
Fils-Aime seemed keen to reiterate that in his comments.
"When we talk about the value of software, it could be a great $1 piece of content or a $50 piece of content," he said. "The point is: Does it maintain its value over time or is it such disposable content that the value quickly goes to zero? We want consumers to see value in the software, whatever that appropriate value is. And we want to see that value maintained over time."
It's not a completely isolated stance. Recently both Trip Hawkins and Chair Entertainment's Donald Mustard have passed comment on Apple's quality control policy, although neither in such unrepentant terms.

Kept in a glass case for more than four years, an original model Nintendo DS bearing the autographs of some of Nintendo's key players (and two literal key players) is being auctioned off by its owner to raise money for the Red Cross disaster relief effort in Japan.
The red Mario Kart DS promotional system is signed by Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, along with composer Koji Kondo, Zelda series chief Eiji Aonuma, voice of Mario Charles Martinet and Martin Leung, a pianist who performs with Video Games Live and rose to fame thanks to playing the Mario theme blindfolded.
Its current owner has vowed to donate 100 percent of their profit from the auction to the Red Cross and provide proof of the donation to the winning bidder. As of this writing, there are six days left to not only get your hands on a rare gaming collectible, but do something good for your fellow man in the process. Visit redcross.org for information on donating directly to the relief effort.

For the last few remaining souls in North America not aware that the Nintendo 3DS is coming later this month, the Japanese company has rolled out its first US commercial. Shockingly enough, it doesn't display anything not already announced, but now would be kind of late to be springing surprises on us anyhow, right? It's a portable console with glasses-free 3D -- that works reasonably well -- and it's made by Nintendo, which means half the people on your street will probably own by this time next month. Jump past the break to see the American commercial and its earlier-released UK sibling -- you'll find a fun juxtaposition of presentation styles when comparing the two.

Nintendo president Iwata was wrong to characterise social and mobile games as a case of quantity over quality, or of lowering the value of games, says ex-Sony Worldwide Studios boss Phil Harrison.
"Iwata-san has done an incredible job rebuilding Nintendo over the last few years. He is a great leader of that company, but in this particular case he is wrong. He is mistaken if [he thinks] this is some kind of fad that will go away. Social networks, as a way of powering our game and entertainment choices, is here to stay," said Harrison to IndustryGamers.
"I thought it was fascinating that pretty much simultaneously with Iwata-san talking about Nintendo, in a hall across the street Steve Jobs is talking about the iPad 2, which got massive pickup and global coverage.
"Some people are talking about 50 to 80 million 'smartpads' being sold a year for the foreseeable future. It's going to create an enormous market, dwarfing every other market," he added.
Social networks, as a way of powering our game and entertainment choices, is here to stay.
Phil Harrison, London Venture Partners.
Iwata's keynote speech at the recently concluded Game Developers Conference saw him outline three concerns over the future of game development. The most important of these was the future of "high value" games, by which he meant traditional retail products, in the face of social network and mobile games.
"These platforms have no motivation to maintain the high value of video game software - for them, content is something created by someone else," said Iwata. "Their goal is just to gather as much software as possible, because quantity is what makes the money flow - the value of videogame software does not matter to them."
Harrison isn't the only developer to criticise Nintendo's stance - last week Frima Studio toldGamesIndustry.biz that "if you aren't able to offer it for a compelling price point, then your competitor will."
As co-founder of London Venture Partners, Harrison is now specialising in funding online and mobile gaming start-ups. In October last year he predicted that traditional video game market leaders could be dethroned in the move to a digital market.

Nintendo's DS RPG double act Pokémon Black/White shifted over a million copies in Europe in their first 10 days on sale.
A spokesperson for Nintendo told Eurogamer that the game, which launched on 4th March, had sold 150,000 copies in two days in the UK, making it the country's biggest ever Pokémon launch.
The announcement comes soon after news that the games topped the million mark in the US after just one day on sale, with Japan sales soaring past the five million mark six months after its September launch there.
Eurogamer's Keza MacDonald slapped a 9/10 on the latest entry in the long running saga, insisting "its connectivity is exceptional, it's mind-blowingly huge, and for the first time, it's beautifully presented."
