HMV may be the official 3DS launch partner, but GAME will dwarf the rival shop-chain's efforts by opening a fleet of 482 GAME and gamestation stores tomorrow night at midnight.
HMV will open 100.
GAME will also one-up HMV by offering a free 3DS console to the first person in each of the 482 queues.
What's more, the first 100 people queueing at GAME HQ on Oxford Street, London, will be given their choice of a free 3DS game. HMV comes out stronger on this point, having pledged to give 500 queuers at its Oxford Street HQ a free 3DS game.
GAME plans to shower Oxford Street attendees with t-shirts and "midnight snacks" as the night rolls on.
In the celeb stakes, GAME has roped in funnyman Iain Lee to preside over its Oxford Street 3DS launch. HMV is holding a glitzy launch party elsewhere in London. The main acts are comedian Russell Kane and musicians Plan B, Hadouken, DJ Yoda and Parade.
GAME also counts five stores offering the first queuer a free taxi ride home. Come from afar, reader - make them work for their money.

March 23rd, 2011, 23:32 Posted By: wraggster
3DS games will carry a box warning message stating that any "unauthorised technical modification" to the handheld may render your entire system "unplayable".
The message can be found on the back of 3DS software packaging and reads:
"This product contains technical protection measures. Any unauthorised technical modification to your Nintendo 3DS system or the use of an unauthorised device with your system may render this game and / or your system unplayable."
The 3DS warning is a step forward from that seen on original DS software, which made no mention of possible hardware harm. It said: "The use of an unlawful device with your Nintendo DS system may render this game unplayable."
The news has naturally sparked speculation that Nintendo could move to brick handhelds that are detected to have run pirated software.
The platform holder has said multiple times in the past that the 3DSfeatures greatly enhanced anti-piracy measures that should hold off hackers.
Speaking to CVG earlier this year, Nintendo UK marketing manager James Honeywell said that thanks to improved security and changes in international law, the company now sees a time when piracy isn't viable.
"There's definitely a step change coming and you see it in various countries around the world," he said. "People are aware that video games, music and movies make massive contributions to the economies of countries. They need to make sure they start protecting those things.
"I think perhaps there's been a 'heyday of piracy' and we've now seen a lot of rules come in to stop it."

Japanese news site reports that three games, including Bomberman, have been scrapped
A report on leading Japanese games news source Andriasang is claiming that publisher Hudson has cancelled three proposed 3DS titles.
The games in question are Bomberman 3DS, platform title Bonk and side scrolling shooter Omega Five. Weekly Japanese trade magazine Famitsu is cited as the source.
It's believed that the decision is linked the company's recent acquisition at the hands of Konami.
Even if the news is true, however, expect Bomberman in particular to make a swift reappearance – Konami is unlikely to turn its back on Hudson's most successful foreign export.
Bigger question marks hang over games like Omega Five, however, which will be a big blow for the hardcore audience who are sure to be amongst the 3DS' early adopters.

Jesus christ this for me is an awesome release, thanks go to tueidj for porting this to the Wii:
Introduction
Theme Hospital was originally released by Bullfrog in 1997. CorsixTH is an open source clone of the original game with the aim of being able to run on more platforms as well as correcting some bugs and adding new enhancements/features.
Game Setup
CorsixTH requires the resource files from the original Theme Hospital game. If you don't have a copy of the original game you can get the demo version (available here) although it only has one level and is missing several features. Copy the HOSP folder from the original disc to somewhere on your SD/USB drive. When you start CorsixTH for the first time it should show a folder browser for you to locate this folder. It should then restart and go to the main menu.
Music
The original Theme Hospital used midi music, and CorsixTH can play these files. However since the wii has no midi hardware you will need timidity-compatible instrument patch files such as those found at the Freepats project. Once you have a patch set copy the .cfg file you wish to use to "/etc/timidity/timidity.cfg" on your SD/USB drive and put the patch files in "/usr/local/lib/timidity". If possible try and use a smaller patch set which uses substitute instruments, since there's not a lot of memory available (for example if using the freepats set use crude.cfg instead of the default freepats.cfg).
Bugs
The CorsixTH project is still a work a progress, and there are bugs. Most of the time you'll get an error on-screen asking if you wish to attempt to continue - it's not really a good idea since you'll end up with patients and/or staff stuck in doorways or trying to perform other actions. The best thing to do at that point is to load the autosave file and hope it doesn't happen again.

"Hey, there's something on your shirt." "Oh, let me brush it off -- did I get it?" "No, it's still there. It's, like ... a fishing game?"
The first 3,000 Europe residents to register their new 3DS systems with Club Nintendo this Friday will receive a t-shirt with a picture of the question-mark AR Card on it, allowing them to augment the realities of their own bodies with archery, fishing, and other AR Games. Yes, it sounds funny, but it also means the person wearing the shirt has to hold still and watch someone else (the person with the 3DS cameras pointed at the shirt) have an awesome time.
Registering a 3DS in Europe will also get you 750 Stars, which puts you well on the way to that New Super Mario Bros. Wii sticker set you've been eyeing.

It's been a good long time since we lost the kind of party-stamina required to persevere through a day-long rager, but perhaps you possess the endurance required to make this invitation more inviting: Nintendo's throwing a lengthy soiree to celebrate the launch of the3DS this weekend in New York City. You can stop by the Best Buy in Union Square starting at noon Saturday to check out the new handheld before queueing up to purchase one between midnight and 2AM.
Now, considering you'll be indulging in 14 whole hours of bacchanalian delights, you'll need to come prepared -- we suggest applying multiple coats of sunscreen throughout the day, remaining well hydrated, and bringing along some extra eyeballs. On the off-chance you play the 3DS for 14 hours straight, you'll probably end up disintegrating your corneas.

A Nintendo 3DS can receive demos while dormant via the Wi-Fi connection as you casually stroll past a shop or a "spot" - that's what the SpotPass feature is all about.
But Nintendo isn't convinced it's demos you really want or, indeed, need.
"I question whether or not demos are effective," 3DS producer Hideki Konno told Wired.
"There are cases where people play a demo game and they're satisfied with that play experience and they don't buy the game. There are also times when they play a demo and think, 'Wow, this is great, I'm going to buy this when I have the chance.'
"Whether or not it's an effective use of resources, I'm not sure."
He added: "You could wake up in the morning and say, 'Oh look, I've got a new game demo,' or a new game."
Nevertheless, game demos are "technically feasible".
Also possible are social features like text chat, voice chat and perhaps game invites. "We are going to make updates to the system, and that's something that would be really interesting to do," mulled Konno.
The 3DS launches here on Friday, its headline feature a glasses-free 3D screen. But contrary to popular belief, it's not all about 3D; Nintendo understands some people either can't see 3D or don't want to, and promises that crowd will be catered for as well.
"We're moving away from any stance that says if you don't use the 3D functionality you can't play this game," said Konno.
Through an eShop (due late May), Nintendo will offer Virtual Console games - rehashes of Game Boy, Game Boy Colour, GameGear and TurboGrafx games - as well as 3D Classics: remastered, 3D versions of old games. Downloadable morsels won't be as cheap as on rival platform the iPhone, though.
"I'd be a little sad to see if there was a product that I worked on for a couple of years go on sale for a buck," offered Konno.

March 23rd, 2011, 00:48 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo's Hideki Konno, project lead on the 3DS, has said that Nintendo isn't interested in making cheap titles for the handheld to compete with App Store prices.
Echoing sentiments expressed by both Reggie Fils-Aime andSatoru Iawata earlier this year, Konno told Gamasutra that his company was too heavily invested in quality to try and match dollar price points for games.
"So now in terms of one dollar games, or free games, or whatever that is out there in the market, I mean, really, we're not going to be competing with that," said Konno.
"We're not going to try to match that; we're just going to continually strive to not just maintain, but increase, the quality of the entertainment that we're providing, and let it sort itself out. Again, we're not worried about competing at a price point level."
Part of that reasoning, Konno argues, is that releasing franchise iterations at low price points means that those games have to be limited in scope or risk devaluing full-priced titles.
"Now of course as a customer, if somebody said to me, 'Hey, we've got Call of Duty on your portable device and it's only going to cost you 100 yen,' yeah, I'd be super stoked, really excited about that."
"And I'd be really excited to see a great game at a really cheap price, but I just don't think that you could make a game that's immersive and as big as, let's say Call of Duty, or any other large title, and sell it at that price point; it's just not possible.
"The only way that you're going to get a game at that price point is if it's a limited version with limited levels or something. They're going to have to reduce it to sell at that price. So that other game - because the content is valuable - it's still going to be a viable product at a higher price point," Konno continued.
"If we went out and created one of our titles - a big title for Nintendo - and we decided to sell it at, like, say 100 yen, how many do we have to sell to get back our investment? That number's insane. It's just incredible, right?
"As a game developer I've put my heart into what I create, and I'm hoping that what I'm putting out there is something that people will be engaged by and entertained by. And as a consumer, I want the same thing. If I go and I see a game that interests me and I think I want to play it, I don't mind the fact that I have to pay a reasonable price for it.
"I'm not trying to say that I think games on cell phones are a bad thing; I'm not trying to say that they're worthless, or have no value at all. I'm just saying that they're just different."
Neither Konno or Nintendo are alone in the position that cheaper games devalue the experience and promote throwaway development - both Donald Mustard of Chair Entertainment and Keith Burgun of 100 Rogues developer Dinofarm Games have both expressed similar opinions in recentGamesIndustry.biz interviews.
The 3DS' download store, which replaces the DSiWare system, will be known as the eshop. Payments will be made in real-world currencies rather than in bespoke points. Following original concerns over a delay to the system's release, Nintendo has now confirmed that the eshop will be operational at launch, selling DSiWare and ported GameBoy titles.

Nintendo has said today that the 3DS has "more than doubled" the number of pre-orders that the Wii achieved in 2006 in UK - and there's still three days left.
"The reaction to Nintendo 3DS has exceeded our wildest expectations," said Nintendo UK general manager, David Yarnton. "It's almost certain that the number of Nintendo 3DS consoles sold on Friday will exceed the number of 3D televisions sold in the whole of 2010," he goes on to speculate. Kinda funny, that.
"Until now 3D has been too expensive, too clumsy and too restricted," added Yarnton. "With Nintendo 3DS it's mobile. It's affordable. It's glasses-free. And it's here, now."
3DS launched in Japan on February 26, where it sold 400,000 units in just two days. Amazon UK announced last week that the handheld has become the most pre-ordered games console in Amazon.co.uk's history, saying pre-order numbers were 56 percent greater than they were for Wii.
It has been speculated that Nintendo will deliver 185,000 3DS units to UKfor the big launch this Friday. That should be enough for our little island, don't you think?

Nintendo says new portable has double the number of pre-orders than those placed for Wii in 2006
With its UK launch nearly upon us, Nintendo has said that pre-orders for the 3DS are running at double the rate experienced with Wii back in 2006.
A retail source has revealed to MCV that the pioneering motion-sensing home console received in the region of 65,000 pre-orders prior to its arrival in the UK.
This means that the 3DS has effectively already sold 120,000 units in the country. This offers up the tantalising prospect of a possible 150k – or perhaps even higher – day one sales blitz.
“The reaction to Nintendo 3DS has exceeded our wildest expectations,” Nintendo's UK general manager David Yarnton stated. “Glasses-free 3D entertainment has truly arrived.
"It’s almost certain that the number of Nintendo 3DS consoles sold on Friday will exceed the number of 3D televisions sold in the whole of 2010. Until now 3D has been too expensive, too clumsy and too restricted. With Nintendo 3DS it’s mobile. It’s affordable. It’s glasses-free. And it’s here, now.”
Amazon revealed last week that the 3DS is already its most pre-ordered console ever.
Around 1,200 stores will be opening their doors in the UK at midnight on Thursday night. A number of retailers have been offering some seemingly crazy trade-in deals on the machine to try and win key market share.

The latest generation of gaming gadgets do some nifty tricks, and one of the niftiest they might perform is assisting the realm of medicine. Microsoft's Kinect sounded like a candidate for surgery, and this month real-life surgeons have actually put it to use -- Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, Canada rigged the Xbox 360 depth camera to its medical imaging computer. Now, doctors don't have to scrub out to manipulate an MRI scan, or even appoint a peon to the task -- rather, they simply raise their bloodied glove, and dive into the digital imagery with a wave of a dextrous hand.
Meanwhile, the American Optometric Association has expanded upon its initial praise of Nintendo's 3DS, saying the autostereoscopic 3D handheld "could be a godsend for identifying kids under 6 who need vision therapy." Though Nintendo's warning labels had originally incited a bit of fear among parents, the organization says that kids who can't experience the 3DS to its full potential may have amblyopia (or other vision disorders) that can be more easily treated the earlier it's caught, though one doctor interviewed bythe Associated Press contends that kids with amblyopia may not know what they're missing to begin with -- so don't necessarily expect a panacea, folks.

The 3DS is not Nintendo's first foray into the world of 3D gaming. In fact, it's not even the company's second. First up was a 3D headset for the good 'ol Famicom (NES in the US), but that never saw American shores and it wasn't anything more fancy than a set of active shutter glasses anyway -- the same sort HDTV manufacturers are trying to sell you today. However, the company's second 3D offering did make it to the US, where it landed with a spectacular thud.
It was the Virtual Boy, a 32-bit portable console powered by six whole AA batteries and remembered by many for its ability to inspire more headaches than excitement in the gamers who tried it. It was released in the US in August of 1995 for $180 and was discontinued less than a year later. With the 3DS sitting now in back rooms of videogame and electronics stores nation-wide, waiting to spring into availability on March 27th, we thought this would be a good time to look back and give the Virtual Boy the full review it has always deserved but has never received.

The 3DS's digital download store won't be available when the new handheld launches on Friday as Nintendo wants to make sure it doesn't make the same mistakes it did with both the Wii and DSi's online shopfronts, according to the system's creator.
"The iterations that we've had before - for Wii and DS - to be honest, we just haven't been as satisfied as we would like," Hideki Konno admitted to Gamasutra.
"It's browser-based, and to be honest, the ease of use wasn't what we wanted, and I don't think that anyone has been pleased with the user response. And I don't think that people have been using it as often as we want. And being able to, again, easily go into it, look around and purchase things. Again, it just didn't work out quite as we were hoping.
He went on to confess that fewer users than originally hoped had been checking out the Wii's Nintendo Channel, which hosted trailers, game news and DS demos. Treating it as a separate entity to the Wii Shop, he argued, was an error.
"For Nintendo 3DS, we really want to cover that all in one spot and cover it from all sides. And so we're really taking the right amount of time to make sure that it's right.
"And because we're also taking the promotional aspect that we would once separate out and putting that together with the actual shopping aspect to give you the eShop, it's not going to be browser-based; it's a native application. So again, the preparation needed for that is quite extensive.
"We're taking more time because we want to be able to create a system where a consumer sees a promotion and says, 'Wow, that looks great!' Sees a game demo, game trailer, whatever it is, and says, 'I want that!' And the ability to then say 'Now I can purchase it right here without having to back out and go somewhere else' - we want to provide that experience," he continued.
"So that's one other reason why we're not bringing it out with the system itself."
Last month Nintendo confirmed that the eShop will arrive in May via a system update. As well as DSiWare games, you'll also be able to purchase vintage Game Boy, Game Boy Color, TurboGrafx-16 and Game Gear titles, as well as classic titles optimised for 3D. Trailers for forthcoming games and 3D movies are also promised.

Nintendo is not concerned by competition from cheap $1 smartphone games and has no plans to lower its software prices accordingly, so says the creator of the 3DS.
Hideki Konno explained to Gamasutra that rather than lower standards to allow it to sell games for less, Nintendo planned to pour more resources into making sure its titles competed at a quality level, rather than on price.
"We're not going to try to match that," he insisted, addressing the issue of rock-bottom priced smartphone titles.
"We're just going to continually strive to not just maintain, but increase, the quality of the entertainment that we're providing, and let it sort itself out. Again, we're not worried about competing at a price point level.
Konno then speculated that Microsoft and Sony held exactly the same opinion on the issue, adding that it wasn't possible to make an immersive, content-rich title for such a low price.
"Now of course as a customer, if somebody said to me, 'Hey, we've got Call of Duty on your portable device and it's only going to cost you 100 yen,' yeah, I'd be super stoked, really excited about that," he said.
So that other game - because the content is valuable - it's still going to be a viable product at a higher price point.
"If we went out and created one of our titles - a big title for Nintendo - and we decided to sell it at, like, say 100 yen," he continued, "how many do we have to sell to get back our investment? That number's insane. It's just incredible, right?
What's more, Konno argued, gamers don't mind paying extra if they know they're getting a quality product.
The 3DS launches this Friday, with full retail games currently priced at around £30. The eShop, which will offer cheaper downloadable titles, will be added in via a system update later this year.

The battery in the Nintendo 3DS is as bad as we had feared, and it's a major impediment to enjoying the system. ... With the screen at a reasonable brightness, 3D and wireless turned off when the game allowed it, and no sound, we were about to get to a little over 4.5 hours of playtime. If you like a brighter screen, keep 3D turned on, or if you have that speaker going, that time is only going to go down. ... Using the cradle whenever the system isn't being played is a habit you're going to want to pick up, especially with a charging time of around three and a half hours.http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/0...Slow-To-Charge
