It may have a high price and lack classic Nintendo franchises at launch, but that didn't stop the crowds queuing for the 3DS last night, as the new handheld console went on sale across the UK.
Entertainment chain HMV was the official launch partner for Nintendo, with Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono on hand to help hype the crowd as the clock struck midnight.
Retailers are offering multiple deals and bundles to attract customers, with Nintendo last night claiming there were around 140,000 pre-orders in the UK. But with prices ranging from $179 to £230, it's still an expensive console even for the dedicated Nintendo fan.
I thought there would be at least a Zelda or some kind of Mario game at launch, but I'll just have to wait for them. It's not holding me back.
"It's kind of pricey. I was thinking maybe £50 less than the current price," said Hugo Fernandez, a lecturer at London Metropolitan who got in the queue at Oxford Street early to take advantage of HMVs free game promotion.
He was also a little disappointed by the lack of big-name Nintendo franchises on day one, although he was willing to shell out over £300 for the console and copies of Street Fighter IV, Ridge Racer and Pilot Wings.
"I can be patient, I can wait a couple of months for Zelda or maybe Mario Kart later this year," he said.
Further up in the queue was Taylor Pelling from Sutton, a gamer willing to pay for the latest gadgets. "It's not bad," he said of the price tag. "I paid £600 for my iPad," adding that he had is eye on copies of Street Fighter IV, LEGO Star Wars III and Pilot Wings.
"I thought there would be at least a Zelda or some kind of Mario game at launch, but I'll just have to wait for them. It's not holding me back, but Nintendo has lost out. I think they've done that so people buy something at the start and then they come back later for the classics," he said.
At the launch party at Old Billingsgate, Nintendo had invited competition winners to sample the 3DS alongside celebrities, guests and press.
Alex, a student from Derby was impressed with the system, but added that he couldn't afford to buy the console at launch but is willing to wait until the next Zelda remake is released.
"I haven't got the money to buy one tomorrow. I'll be tempted to buy it when Ocarina of Time comes out, basically. That would persuade me whatever the price."
"I'm not a great fan of the games being shown tonight," he said of the launch line-up. "I prefer Metroid, Zelda, Mario, classic Nintendo. But I am impressed by the quality of what I've seen."
Viewing the 3D effect of the system without wearing special glasses has been at the heart of Nintendo's marketing message, but getting the 3DS hands-on time with consumers is essential to show the differences between previous iterations of Nintendo handhelds.
"When I first got hold of the 3DS it was weird but as soon as I got used to the effect I knew where I was after ten minutes or so," said Alex, but he wasn't aware the 3D effect could be manipulated with a slider at the side of the system.
Working through his complimentary beer, Roy, a student from Leicester was also impressed with the console but admitted he was a little disorientated by the 3D.
"I love the effect buy it makes me feel a bit dizzy," he said.
HMV had opened over 100 stores at midnight for the launch, with rival GAME opening 482 stores across the country to meet demand.
The 3DS goes on sale today, priced between £170 and £230, with launch titles including Nintendogs + Cats, Pilot Wings, Super Monkey Ball and Ridge Racer.

Nintendo's UK marketing manager, James Honeywell, has told press that he's confident UK stocks of the 3DS will last through the weekend.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Honeywell reassured shoppers that stock levels were well in excess of expected demand, with pre-orders not affecting shelf stock of the 3D handheld.
"We have well in excess of the pre-orders available," said Honeywell. "I know we haven't published an actual number, and I know there have been a lot of reports out there talking about numbers. All of those numbers are way short of the actual number.
I know there have been a lot of reports out there talking about numbers. All of those numbers are way short of the actual number.
James Honeywell, Nintendo
"So there is literally no reason why you won't be able to go out tomorrow, Saturday, Sunday and buy one."
Reports had placed pre-order figures at around 140,000, with Amazon announcing that the handheld outstripped all previous consoles in pre-order numbers.
"The pre-orders are 140,000," Honeywell confirmed. "We've got way more than that available out there. So don't be put off by that. You can go out there and you'll be able to get one no matter what."

[Doug] over at the moddedbybacteria forums has been working hard on a fantastic looking portable NES console and wrote in to let us know it was complete.
The console started as a simple idea to use a Nintendo on a chip (NOAC) board in order to create a portable console that played original NES cartridges. Once a plastic case and some batteries were sourced, along with the NOAC board, the project was well on its way.
[Doug] eventually decided that he would rather use a real Nintendo motherboard in the project, so the NOAC was scrapped…temporarily. He accidentally fried the Nintendo board, so it was back to the NOAC, but with upgraded wiring to take care of some interference problems he was having earlier in the build. An original NES controller was disassembled for use in the console, which gives the portable an authentic feel. Getting the case to look just right was a long process, but we think he did a great job with it.
If you want to take a look at his entire build log, be aware that it is 23 pages long. If you’re impatient and want to jump straight to the unveiling, that happens on page 22.
Keep reading to see a pair of videos [Doug] put together both during the production and after his build was completed.
If you are interested in seeing some other portable NES consoles we have featured in the past, look no further than here, here, and here.

News via http://supremedirt.drunkencoders.com...4-development/
I’ve decided to also use this blog for my mod of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Brawl 64.
Basically a remake of Smash 64, with updated graphics, larger character roster, more stages, etc.
I plan on, far down the road, also balancing items and final smashes, though this won’t be done until the very end.
Right now I am working on shields. Just standing still, in your shield, in Brawl your shield breaks in roughly a second. In 64, it breaks in 900 frames exactly, or 15 seconds. This might seem simple, but then 64 had a different rate at which shields recovered as well, and I have no idea how to find this value aside from learning how the game is programmed, and locating the constant for it.
Much work is ahead of me. I think the next thing I’ll do is remove side specials, should be a fairly simple task.

News via http://supremedirt.drunkencoders.com...opment-begins/
As of today, development on Soul of Rebirth has resumed. Sort of.
What do I mean sort of? No actual programming will be done for a few months. I will be getting designs on paper, everything planned out. This is because I have decided that Soul of Rebirth will be a Turn-Based Competitive Strategy RPG for the 3DS.
Obviously, I will have to wait until the 3DS has been released, never mind cracked, until this can even begin.
To start with, I’ve been working on Experience formulas. I have one that took me about an hour and a half to come up with. The level cap is 50.
The formula is…
squareroot([Level^2-1]/7)
All roots and division are rounded down immediately as they happen.
This is the basic formula. In particular, it’s designed to not immediately look formulaic when the actual values are looked at. Throw it in Excel (fix the squareroot to root, add in the ROUNDDOWN statements) to see, I don’t feel the need to post the values.
I’m currently working on a formula that initially requires higher experience, but around level 30 or so starts to require less.
Until next time,
~Supreme Dirt

Just because a logo for a service called "3DSWare" showed up on the official Nintendo Greece website, it's no indication that such a service exists. At least, that's what Nintendo told VG247. The company said that a "technical issue" accidentally made public a "temporary logo" put together by Nintendo's Greek distributor.
"This logo is in no way related to any unannounced services or features for Nintendo 3DS," said Nintendo, "and was simply a placeholder used whilst the website underwent construction work and has since been removed."
Which means we're back to there not being a known download service for new 3DS games -- in other words, the 3DS download service is a step back from the DSi. Why is Nintendo working so hard not to announce this, again?

The Nintendo 3DS has a slider in its side. A slider that adjusts its namesake feature, three-dimensional imagery, up and down in intensity relative to the user's preference. Now, although the 3DS' screen doesn't force glasses on you, it does demand that it be held just right in order to get the most out of the 3D effect and we can imagine plenty of people might neglect its extra dimension in favor of old-fashioned 2D (not to mention those who can't tolerate the third D for health reasons). It's encouraging, therefore, to hear that Nintendo has taken the stance that no game should require 3D as part of its gameplay mechanics. That's the word from Hideki Konno, one of Nintendo's veteran producers, who says the company wants all of its 3DS games to be playable in 2D, essentially reducing the 3D aspect to an aesthetic enhancement. Some might argue that's underusing the portable's hardware potential, but Nintendo has always been in the business of pleasing the mass market -- there's nothing preventing some daring developer from making a game entirely dependent on a three-dimensional perspective.

What are the chances of walking into a shop tomorrow and buying a Nintendo 3DS off the shelf?
Is there enough stock allocated to the UK to serve the pre-orders and then the spontaneous shoppers out there?
Eurogamer investigated.
Sainsbury's: "We have 3DS consoles in over 300 stores from launch this Friday. Availability is good and we will have a fantastic range of offers across hardware, software and accessories," Sainsbury's promised Eurogamer.
Buy a 3DS from Sainsbury's Harringay, London Colney or Lincoln at midnight tonight and pay £197. Standard price after will be £219.99.
Super Monkey Ball 3D and Rayman 3D are only £30 when bought with a 3DS.
ASDA: "I have looked into your inquiry and am assured we will have enough stock for anyone who wants to come to store to buy a Nintendo 3DS this Friday and weekend," ASDA told Eurogamer, patting its pocket.
ASDA stores will sell the 3DS for £197. Online you can pre-order at a special price of £187.
ASDA will also be opening 200 stores at midnight tonight to sell the 3DS. The Derby supermarket offers the first 100 3DS buyers a free game, entertainment and food.
If you buy a 3DS from ASDA within the first three days you can pick up one of the 3DS launch titles for £15. This deal is also effective online.
"We're expecting huge week-one demand, particularly for the weekend..."
HMV
Tesco: A spokesperson for Tesco told Eurogamer there will be enough stock for off-the-shelf buying tomorrow. Tesco sells the 3DS for £175 if you buy a 3DS game with it, which takes the grand total to £209.99. The flat Tesco 3DS price is £197.
Morrisons: Eurogamer was told by Morrisons that pre-order demand had been so high that shelf stock had been affected. We're waiting for an official statement.
Currys: "We are selling the Nintendo 3DS in all our stores and are confident that there will be stock available to purchase throughout the day," Currys told Eurogamer.
Currys carries a low 3DS price of £179. But there's a caveat: that price is only offered to the first 150 people queueing at Currys on Oxford Street tonight. The flat price for a 3DS at Currys is £197, with a £25 game-price incentive bolted on.
Toys 'R' Us: "For thousands of 3DS fans across the country who cannot make it at midnight, we can confirm that Toys 'R' Us will not be disappointing customers on Friday morning. Each of our 76 stores in the UK will be supplied with plenty of stock to cope with consumer demand," Toys 'R' Us told Eurogamer.
HMV: "In a nutshell: yes," HMV answered to Eurogamer. "But we're expecting huge week-one demand, particularly for the weekend - so the earlier punters come in to make their purchase the better. Better still, if they pre-order by Thursday we will guarantee them a 3DS - so we recommend that's their best bet."
HMV is the official launch 3DS UK launch partner, so more stock may be pushed its way. The HMV midnight launch bonanza we've written about before. Oxford Street HMV is the flagship venue down south; Liverpool One shopping centre HMV up north.
HMV sells the 3DS for a flat price of £197.
GAME: "Yes, as a punter there will be stock available at each store (both GAME and gamestation) for you to walk in and buy a 3DS," GAME told Eurogamer.
GAME sells the 3DS for £197. GAME's midnight launch plans we've written about before.
If you know of any other shops with 3DS stock availability, please tell us below.

Supermarket Tesco and high-street electronics shop Currys have both lowered the Nintendo 3DS price to under £180.
Tesco is lowest, asking just £175 for the new device, according to MCV. Currys is after £179, wrote TechRadar.
To qualify for that Tesco price, you'll need to buy an accompanying 3DS game in-store.
Curry's will only sell the 3DS for £179 to the first 150 people in line at Currys on Oxford Street, London.
Those 150 people will also get a £75 voucher book, a £5 discount on selected 3DS games, £15 off Wii Fit and £20 off a Wii console.
Supermarket Morrisons and Amazon had offered the joint-lowest 3DS price of £187.
The Nintendo 3DS carries a RRP of £230. But why does it cost so much? Eurogamer's US news correspondent Fred Dutton investigated exactly how much it costs to make a Nintendo 3DS.
The Nintendo 3DS arrives in the UK tonight, at midnight.

March 24th, 2011, 23:48 Posted By: wraggster
A report by Eurogamer has indicated that the estimated cost of the components of a 3DS to Nintendo is £61.76, with the price to retailers thought to be around £170, a margin of £108.
Once the UK's new 20 per cent rate of VAT is added to that £170.63, minimum break-even price is £204.86. Added retailer overheads and staffing costs soon push that price north of £230.
Eurogamer's estimations come from David Carey, VP of technical intelligence for UBM TechInsights, which specialises in maximum investment return in consumer electronics.
Whilst the estimate is just that, it certainly represents a significant price hike on a console whichNintendo openly admits will be sold at a profit from the get-go.
Compared to the launch prices of Nintendo's other handhelds, the 3DS represents a significant cost increase, but UBM's analysis seems to indicate that the rise is somewhat disproportionate to the costs involved. The DSi, for example, launched at £149 in 2009, but cost just £9.17 less per unit for Nintendo to produce. However, that model came later in a line where previous iterations had absorbed a great deal of R&D costs.
"Little known fact, the margin on hardware for retailers is incredibly small," EEDAR's Jesse Divnich told Eurogamer. "Retailers make the profit on the games and accessories. Typically retailers see a 20 to 25 per cent margin on the games and 40 to 60 per cent on the accessories."
That's a view echoed by Don McCabe, CEO of the independent CHIPS retail network.
"By the time you take into account the VAT and various other bits and pieces, [retailers charging under £200] will not make a brass penny piece. Even for an online outfit, it's still going to cost them money to sell it for under 200 quid."
McCabe sees that as detrimental, not just to the public, but to the industry as a whole.
"It means that consumers won't go hands-on with the machine," McCabe believes. "You don't get hands-on via mail order and supermarkets very rarely do demonstrations.
"What happens is, your early adopters are going to buy the machine come hell or high water. It doesn't matter whether it's £200 or £230, they still would've bought it. But early adopters will not make the machine. It's wave two and wave three that make the machine and the only way that's going to happen is if people see it, feel it, touch it. 3D is very difficult to get across in a TV advert or in a newspaper. People need to experience it.
"We saw it with the Dreamcast. A critically acclaimed machine, but only the early adopters took it on, and it died," he continued.
"For a machine to grow and be viable, it needs to go beyond the early adopters. The actions that the Tescos and the mail order people of this world take have a detrimental effect on that.

And it has begun. Nintendo has released the first of what we're certain will be many firmware updates for its new 3DS handheld, and it's not even out in the West yet.
To entice you into updating, Nintendo has packed a 3D video in with the download that'll appear on your 3DS after you apply the update. Nintendo US has confirmed that the video is the sweet 'White Knuckles' video from OK Go - who's impressive and quirky videos have proven a hit with the YouTube masses (check it out below).
It's unclear if UK 3DS users will get the same video. Let us know when you get yours in a couple of hours. Ta!
Nintendo says the update makes "improvements to overall system stability", applies a SpotPass upgrade "for receiving notifications and other data", and "enhances network connection functionality ... to allow communication with some wireless Internet access points that were previously unavailable".
3DS goes on sale in UK in two hours. Nintendo UK is confident supplies won't dry up despite rocketing demand.

Platform holder confirms pre-orders of 140k for pioneering handheld device
On the eve of the biggest launch in its history, Nintendo has told MCV that everything is in place for the 3DS to break records this weekend and then go on to become it’s most successful ever console.
Marketing manager James Honeywell said that the pre-launch campaign has been an unqualified success, with the sampling tour introducing the new format to over half a million consumers – considerably more than the firm’s original target of 400,000.
He also confirmed that the first wave of marketing will spike this weekend and next week, before a couple of slightly quieter weeks and then a second wave, targeting the mainstream consumer as much as existing gamers, will be everywhere from the start of the Easter holidays and through into May.
Asked about sales projections for this weekend and beyond he commented: “Obviously the original headline statement was that we wanted to sell four million globally by the end of March.
"What does that mean for the UK? Well, it’s early days, but we do know that we have record pre-orders of over 140,000, which suggests it’s going to be our biggest ever launch by some distance – with Wii we did 106,000 in the opening weekend and with DSi it was 90,000.
“How many people who haven’t pre-ordered will go out this weekend and buy one this weekend? It’s hard to say, but what we know already is that in one weekend we’ll sell more 3DS units than all the 3D TVs sold in the entire past year – so we really are bringing 3D to the masses.
“Long term we’re hopeful it can be our biggest ever machine. We’ve sold over 13 million DS units in the UK and over 132 million worldwide, so that gives you some idea of the scale of ambition.”

It would seem that Nintendo Greece has inadvertently confirmed that the 3DS will indeed feature a downloadable game service called 3DSWare. The news comes via Nintendo Greece's website, which displays a logo for 3DSWare amongst the WiiWare and DSiWare logos. Unsurprisingly, the 3DSWare section currently has no titles listed.
Previously, the name '3DSWare' had been trademarked by Nintendo, though it has never been officially mentioned by the company. In fact, earlier this month, Nintendo's senior director of corporate communications, Charlie Scibetta, wouldn't confirm to Joystiq that such a service existed, much less that it had a name. Of course, that hasn't stopped Rovio from announcing yet another port of Angry Birds for it.
