Nintendo's strategy with the 3DS's early years and its forthcoming Wii U launch is to put core-orientated games ahead of efforts to attract the mass market, according to CEO Satoru Iwata.Speaking in an investor Q&A following its financial report last week, Iwata explained that the platform holder has learned from mistakes made with the Wii.While that console succeeded in attracting new customers with more casual titles such as Wii Sports, he admitted Nintendo had then struggled to convince core gamers to take the platform seriously, which negatively impacted the system's long term success."The Wii was able to reach a large number of new consumers who had never played games before by bringing hands-on experiences with its Wii Sports and Wii Fit," he explained."However, we could not adequately create the situation that such new consumers played games frequently or for long, consistent periods. As a result, we could not sustain a good level of profit."Moreover, regrettably, what we prioritised in order to reach out to the new audience was a bit too far from what we prioritised for those who play games as their hobby. Consequently, we presume some people felt that the Wii was not a game system for them or they were not willing to play with the Wii even though some compelling games had been released."Accordingly, Iwata explained, it decided not to flood the 3DS's early release slate with casual games, instead prioritising core titles such as Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Ocarina of Time 3D and Mario Kart 7. It intends to take a similar approach with the Wii U when it launches later this year."Once consumers have a notion that 'this system is not for us', we have learned that it is extremely difficult to change their perceptions later," said Iwata."Therefore, in promoting the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U, we have announced that we would like 'width' and 'depth' to coexist."With the Nintendo DS and the Wii, the approach of 'width' was well accepted by many people; however, what we did in terms of 'depth' was not satisfactory for some consumers. This time, we would like consumers to be satisfied in both aspects."In order to do so, we started to work on the 'depth' aspect first, and the current and existing software you can see for the Nintendo 3DS is based on that idea. In the future, the approach will evolve," he continued."Our approach for the Wii U is basically the same. By doing so continuously, we are expecting that the number of game users per household will increase and as the gaming population increases, we believe we can create a sustainable video game market."

If you can't wait to spend some of those coins, Nintendo is offering new rewards for its Club Nintendo program. Four new downloadable games have been made available for May, including a pair of 3DS titles and two WiiWare games.
Art Style: Pictobits is the frontrunner for our hard-earned coins, a delightful DSiWare puzzle game ported to the 3DS. Pictobitsdebuted next to Majora's Mask, so you may not remember it. The other high-profile game is a 3DS port ofUrban Champion, the first fighting game to appear on the NES and quite possibly the worst game to appear on the NES.
The two WiiWare games are Snowpack Park and Eco Shooter: Plant 3D. All four games will be available for download until May 31.

'The window for release and success of software on the platform ended in 2009', claims indie publisher
Game sales on Nintendo's digital platform WiiWare are almost non-existent, claims the founder of indie publisher Nicalis.
Speaking to GoNintendo, Tyrone Rodriguez said that he was forced into cancelling Nigoro’s side-scrolling game La-Mulana after two years of development because of the tiny customer-base on the system.
He added that the game had also failed to pass Nintendo’s submission process in the US and EU, despite already having DLC in place.
“The decision to cancel publishing of La-Mulana was a tough call, but waiting two years for Nigoro to finish development has made it near impossible to sell sufficient units on Wii,” said Rodriguez.
“The WiiWare market has a fraction of the players from 2008. The window for release and success of software on the platform ended in 2009 and took a very steep decline. Players have moved onto other digital download platforms.”

Iwata talks regional sales, Wii U predictions, selling hardware at a loss and digital downloads
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]www.nintendo-europe.com
Nintendo revealed its first full-year loss in company history yesterday, with the business $531 million in the red after a poor launch for the 3DS, declining Wii sales, a weak Christmas period and tough exchange rates due to the strong Yen.
Speaking in an investor presentation following the results, president Satoru Iwata offered his analysis of the current home and handheld video game market from Nintendo's perspective, looking at the key markets of Japan, the US and Europe, as well as addressing future strategies for 3DS, Wii U and digital growth.
Chart analysis
2012 Hardware Units Sales in Japan
Japan is Nintendo's strongest market. Hardware units sales for the first quarter of the year have been impressive for the 3DS with only the PlayStation 3 a noticeable competitor. Sony's PS Vita by comparison looks in poor shape, being outsold in the handheld market by its predecessor the PSP.
"We believe this is a sign that the Nintendo 3DS has a strong presence in the market," noted Iwata. "On the other hand, since this year started, we have seen the Wii sales quickly losing momentum. In the home console market this year, Sony's PlayStation 3 remains in good shape," he added.
Of the top 20 software titles in Japan so far this year, 15 are for Nintendo systems, 13 of which are 3DS games and five of those first-party releases.
Over in the US the story is quite different, with Iwata acknowledging that Microsoft's Xbox 360 has maintained hardware sales momentum in 2012, although it does not seem to be due to sales of the Kinect peripheral.
"Some Kinect titles fared well in the chart towards the end of last year, but it seems that this momentum did not continue, so Kinect is probably not responsible for the Xbox 360's current sales growth," he said.
Kinect is probably not responsible for the Xbox 360's current sales growth
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo
There were eight Xbox 360 games in the top 20 best-sellers for 2012 according to NPD, compared to six from Sony and six from Nintendo. Iwata added that sales of the 3DS in the region are below expectations.
"Considering that the U.S. market is two or three times the size of its Japanese equivalent, I believe that the sales of the Nintendo 3DS in the U.S. are far below the level that it could potentially reach." There's also still a decent market for the original DS, according to Nintendo.
UK software sales Jan-March 2012, highlighting the dominance of Xbox 360 games.
In Europe it's all change again, with Sony showing the strongest in terms of hardware sales according to Nintendo estimates. "Although the Nintendo 3DS has recently increased its weekly sales, it is far from a satisfactory level," he offered.
Breaking down European regions, Nintendo noted that of the top 20 best-selling titles in 2012, Nintendo claims ten hits in Germany, and nine each in Spain and France. There are six Nintendo titles in the UK charts, but "the UK market is virtually the only market in Europe where the Xbox 360 has a strong presence," according to Iwata. "In fact, it dominates the PlayStation 3, and it is in stark contrast to the other European markets."
Sales forecasts for 2012
Sales forecasts for Nintendo hardware/software. Forecasts for Wii U and original Wii are combined.
Nintendo has said it expects to return to a profit in the current financial year, but disappointingly isn't yet breaking out sales of the original Wii and Wii U, due for sale before Christmas 2012. Instead it has combined sales in its forecasts, expecting 10.5 million combined Wii unit sales and 70 million combined Wii software sales.
"We think that the software sales of the Nintendo DS and the Wii will rather significantly decrease due to the small number of games scheduled in this fiscal year," said Iwata.
"We don't anticipate that the software sales of the Wii U can compensate for the decrease in those of the Wii because the Wii U will be launched as late as in the holiday season and then the total unit sales of the Wii U will be limited in this fiscal year. This is one of the reasons our business performance inevitably fluctuates when we change platforms."
Software sales forecasts for the Wii U and the 3DS include those to be downloaded via digital distribution but exclude Virtual Console software and download-only software.
Sales of the 3DS are expected to climb to 18.5 million with game sales of 73 million.
Selling at a loss
Speaking of the 3DS, Iwata quite simply stated that in the first half of the financial year Nintendo intends to "get out of the situation that we sell the hardware below cost," following last year's poor results. Software must remain evergreen said Iwata, rolling out a well-worn list of Nintendo franchises, before admitting that last year suffered with a large gap between 3DS releases "which delayed the beginning of the year-end sales season and we eventually missed our goal of the sales forecast."
Expanding the digital business
But the headline news from Nintendo's conference call was the reveal that it intends to release digital games at the same time as physical products, although solid details were thin on the ground.
Over 70 % of 3DS users in the US and Japan have connected to the internet compared to 50% in Europe
"The company will offer the software titles that Nintendo itself publishes in both packaged and digital download formats so that our consumers can choose the way to purchase them," offered Iwata.
He revealed that in Japan and the US over 70 per cent of 3DS users have connected to the internet, while in that figure is only 50 per cent in Europe and Australia, "which is not a satisfactory level yet."
Iwata said he wanted to continue to use traditional retail to sell digital content using codes purchased at physical or online stores, and noted a difficulty in exposing potential customers to digital content. "If only the consumers who proactively visit the Nintendo eShop are aware of the digital download software that we deploy, there is no chance that our digital business can drastically expand," he said.

Mind Candy title reigns atop the Nintendo handheld chart for unprecedented 15 weeks
The DS may be in its twilight years, but success is still to be had for those who nail the correct strategy.
Mind Candy’s Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo has set a new record by topping the single format DS charts for an eye-watering 15 weeks in succession.
This betters the previous record set by Nintendo’s own Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training.

via http://dsx86.patrickaalto.com/DSblog.htmlLast week was again a busy week at the office. In addition to that, I was given an additional project that I need to spend my free time on, so I have not been able to work on DSx86 or DS2x86 at all during the past week. It seems that I need to spend my free time mostly working on other things besides DSx86/DS2x86 also for the next few weeks at least. Sorry about that, but occasionally real life interferes with your hobbies. I do plan to continue working on DS2x86 Windows 3.11 support and other enhancements as soon as I have more time to spend on it. I have my summer vacation in July, and I am pretty confident that I will have these other tasks finished by then, so I should be able to concentrate on DS2x86 fully during my summer vacation. It is quite possible that I am able to continue long before that, but we shall see.
Thanks again for your continued interest in DSx86 and DS2x86, and sorry for not being able to enhance them for a few weeks. I hope they are currently at a sufficiently usable state, so that you can manage for a while without new updates.

- Letterbomb was replaced by Wilbrand. Wilbrand was created by giantpune and he has given ModMii the unique privilege of being the first to use and share Wilbrand. Wilbrand, named after the inventor of TNT, is a discless Wii Message Board exploit, or "bomb" if you will. ModMii users will no longer need to be instructed to manually download the Letterbomb exploit; instead ModMii will prompt users for their Wii's unique MAC address and build the exploit on the fly. Unlike Letterbomb, ModMii will only require a wifi connection the first time it constructs the Wilbrand exploit. ModMii will only build the Wilbrand exploit for 4.3 system menu's; however, Wilbrand is supported on all system menu's from 3.0 to 4.3. The reason ModMii does not offer Wilbrand exploits for system menu's 3.0 - 4.2 is because bannerbomb, another discless exploit, can be used instead and it does not require knowing your Wii's MAC Address. Wilbrand is available on ModMii's Download Page 2 as well as other wizard\guide functions. A big thank you goes out to giantpune for creating Wilbrand and allowing ModMii to share it with the world.
- ModMii's forwarder dol builder and all of ModMii's supported forwarder channels were updated from v11c to v12 and now support 3TB+ hard drives. Thanks for this goes out to FIX94 and the WiiXplorer team.
Fixed bug that sometimes occurred when building an "Advanced cIOS" from ModMii's Advanced Downloads page. If a new IOS slot was not identified then version number patches were not applied. Thanks to JoostinOnline for spotting and reporting this bug.
- Fixed rare bug where the wrong guide was generated if installing a custom theme without also using MMM to install at least one WAD.
sysCheck updated from 2.1.0.b17 to 2.1.0.b18 on ModMii's download page 2.
- WiiFlow-Mod was renamed back to WiiFlow at the request of the WiiFlow team.
- Other minor changes.
ModMii 6.1.0

You can finally play the iconic movie on your NES!
Akira is a point-and-click text adventure following the plot of the movie (not the manga), and is sure to give even the greatest fans quite the challenge.
This project was many years in the making and was a combined effort of danke, Pennywise, and Niahak with some early aid from RedComet. The game was translated rather quickly, but, because it was a text adventure, space immediately became an issue. After a line hack and hijacking the native DTE, space was still a major issue. It was decided that the ROM needed to be expanded and the pointer system reworked. After that headache, the text was inserted without issues and with minimal editing for space. You can enjoy the game as it was meant to be.
The game itself is extremely challenging if you haven’t watched the movie. There are also some ’shooting’ mini-games that are enough to make you swear, so saving often is highly recommended.
To make use of the patch, you need to run the ROM through ROM Expander Pro, which is included in the zip file. All instructions can be found in the readme.
Due to the nature of the game and the hundreds of possible choices and responses, no amount of beta-testing could have checked over everything. As far as we know, the game is 100% bug-free, but there may be a typo or two. If you spot anything, feel free to report it in the forum post linked with this article.
