Here’s the smallest GameCube we’ve seen, straight from the fruitful workbench of [lyberty5] over on the ModRetro forums. Even though we’ve seen disc-less GameCubes before, [lyberty5] puts this project together so well it wouldn’t look out-of-place in the Nintendo product lineup.
Unlike most of the other portable GameCubes we’ve seen, [lyberty5]‘s build doesn’t have a disk drive. The games are loaded off an SD card with the help of a Wiikey Fusion, a small FPGA’d device that replaces the CD drive in GameCubes and Wiis with an SD card.
The enclosure was constructed out of vacuum formed plastic with the always popular ‘dremeling and bondoing a controller for proper button placement’ method. Inside the enclosure is the hacked up GameCube, a 3.5 inch screen capable of displaying NTSC video at 640×480 resolution and enough battery power to get two or three hours of playtime from a single charge.
After the break you can check out [lyberty5] fast-paced demo video that really sets the bar for portablized console presentation.

3DS sold 950,000 units in its first 61 weeks on sale in the UK, while PS Vitasold just 100,000 in its first ten 10 weeks of availability.
That's according to Pocket Gamer, which cites data from recent weekly Gfk Chart-Track reports, which it says were obtained from a source. The site reports that 3DS will reach one million sales early next month, taking roughly three months longer than its predecessor did to hit the milestone. DS reached one million UK sales in just 51 weeks.
Gfk Chart-Track's business group director Dorian Bloch noted that the difference in price of the systems was an important factor - Nintendo's older handheld was sold at an average price of just £98 in its first ten weeks, versus £202 for 3DS, although the newer system now retails for around £140 following a price cut last August.
PocketGamer also reports that the original PSP had sold 350,000 units after ten weeks on sale, 3.5 times as many as Vita achieved during the same period.
Chart-Track's Bloch noted that the average Vita cost £232 in the system's first ten weeks on sale, versus £178 for the average PSP, adding: "[PS Vita] was launched at a traditionally quiet time, and [PSP] was launched in the build-up to Q4."

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will launch on Wii U, PlayStation 3, Vita and Xbox 360, according to a new report.Paul Gale, he who first reported on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, also offered more information on the leaked Nintendo 3DS game Castlevania: Mirror of Fate.Mirror of Fate is a 2D Castlevania game that has been in development for a year-and-a-half, and features two playable characters and co-op play. It uses the 3DS' forward-facing camera as a mirror and the outward facing camera for puzzle solving.Apparently a Wii U version, which interacted with the 3DS version, was in the works before Konami ditched it in favour of a Wii U version of Lords of Shadow 2.The Wii U version of Mirror of Fate would have been the same game as the 3DS version, with the tablet controller's touch screen acting as the bottom 3DS screen and your telly acting as the 3DS' top screen. You were able to use the Wii U's forward facing camera as a mirror to "capture your reflection and reveal your fate".Now, though, Wii U owners will have to settle for a "safer" port of Lords of Shadow 2, which could retain some of the planned connectivity with Mirror of Fate. Both games are being made by Spanish developer MercurySteam and will be unveiled at E3 next month.

The Super Famicom Classic Controller for Wii remains out of reach for everyone but Japanese Club Nintendo members (and eBay users, of course), but ThinkGeek is stocking a very close facsimile for $20.
In fact, the Classic Super Famicom Controller for Wii is functionally identical to the Club Nintendo version. It plugs into your Wii Remote and lets you play Virtual Console games (or anything else that supports Classic Controller use and doesn't require analog sticks) with a controller designed to replicate the SNES pad. It even has the colorful face buttons of the Japanese controller.
Right now seems like a questionable time to buy a Wii accessory, but you'd already be using it to play old games. The impending obsolescence of the Wii isn't necessarily a deal breaker. Besides, the Wii U uses Wii Remotes; a Classic Controller might come in handy with that as well.

With E3 2012 right around the corner, Reggie and co. want to make sure your oft-distracted eyes catch every drip drop of the impending Wii U news flood. Much like it did last year, Nintendo's yet again taking to media outlets old and new for coverage of its All-Access Presentation, scheduled for June 5th at 9AM PST, that should prove an unavoidable must-see for any gamer bred on the house that Mario built. Whether you take your news via flat-screen or monitor, the gaming giant's got a solution to sate your preferred means of consumption, making its press conference available ad-free on Spike TV and MTV2, or online with a Facebook-hosted live stream. Of course, you can always set your browser to the Big N's own dedicated site on the big day to keep abreast of its next planned dive into the deep Blue Ocean. Check out the presser after the break for all the necessary informational bits.

Nintendo’s E3 presentation will be broadcast on television channels and web services, the company announced today.
Nintendo is offering what they’re describing as an ‘All-Access Presentation’ of next month’s press conference on Spike TV, MTV2, Youtube, Facebook, Twiter, and through e3.nintendo.com.
"We don't want anyone to miss the energy and excitement of this year's E3 Expo," Nintendo of America's vice president of Corporate Affairs Cindy Gordon explained. "By offering different ways to tune in and follow all the Nintendo news, we aim to make fans all over the world feel like they're right there with us at the show."
Both Microsoft and Sony previously confirmed broadcasting of various forms for their own respective press conferences.
The Nintendo press event (which we highly expect to be Wii-U focused) will kick-off Tuesday, June 5th at 9 AM Pacific.

[h=2]TT Games employee tweets image of revised tablet design, featuring proper analogue sticks.[/h]
A member of staff at Maidenhead studio TT Games has tweeted an image of what appears to be a redesigned tablet controller forNintendo's upcoming home console, Wii U.
The image, which has since been deleted but not before our vigilant friends at Nintendo Gamer took a screenshot, shows a broadly similar design to that unveiled alongside the console at E3 last year, with one major difference: the analogue controls, which were originally modelled on the 3DS circle pad, have been replaced with proper analogue sticks.
The start and select buttons have been moved from under the screen to its right hand side, and the grey cable connected to the top of the controller closely resembles a 3DS AC adaptor. There are two new square buttons, too: one under the d-pad, and the other in between the power button and battery light.
There's no suggestion that this is the final version of the controller - that, and the final hardware, will be revealed at E3 next month - but the inclusion of analogue sticks in particular suggests that either Nintendo or its licensed developers weren't entirely happy with the original design, pictured below.
In January, Street Fighter series producer Yoshinori Ono said that the Wii U unveiled at last year's E3 was far from the finished article, saying the console had evolved since its unveiling and had "many unique possibilities". Nintendo has been known to be working on improving the console for some time, with reports last year claiming it was working on support for multiple tablet controllers, as well as improving RAM and processor speed.

We don't know much about the next Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, but we know it's in the works.
A new Smash Bros was first confirmed in at E3 last year, where Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata told E3 attendees that because the Sora development team was so involved in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Read between the lines and he's essentially admitted they haven't got a clue what the game will entail and desperately needed something to keep the hardcore Ninty fans from rioting.
Sakurai later admitted 'shouldn't have been publicly announced' because development hasn't even started and won't do until Kid Icarus Uprising is complete. Now that franchise creator Masahiro Sakurai has kicked Kid Icarus: Uprising out the door and said he's not interested in sequel he's likely turning his attention to Nintendo's all-star brawler.
So, we thought we'd pitch in with a few of our own ideas in the hopes of speeding the development process up, and because Nintendo we know Nintendo will definitely read this and definitely listen to everything we have to say....
[h=4]IDENTITY[/h]Smash Bros, by its very nature, is a bit of a hodge-podge of all things Nintendo. For many this mish-mashing of content is what attracts them to the series, but in recent years the charm has started to wear a bit thin.Maybe it's because we're old and cynical but these days we're having trouble ignoring the fact that Nintendo is essentially just dumping a buttload of assets into one place and then retooling it all to accommodate four characters beating the snot out of each other.
It's undeniably awesome, but we think it could be so much better if Nintendo put in the time and effort to create a uniform aesthetic and re-imagine all the characters for the next game. We're a little bit bored of seeing the same Mario, Link and Captain Falcon model, albeit with better textures. We'd rather see a whole new take on Hyrule Temple, instead of the same one dusted off and cleaned up yet again.
Characters like Toon Link and Mr. Game and Watch, which have their own unique visual style will certainly be tricky to reinvent but we have faith in Nintendo et al.

A patent filed by Nintendo in October of last year has just surfaced online, suggesting a neat feature for the Wii U. The patent outlines a feature in which the player can use the Wiimote to grab things from the television and transport them over to the Wii U tablet.
In the example provided, the player is under attack from a UFO and uses the Wiimote to move a character from the TV to the safety of the tablet. Sounds like an interesting feature, though we're not looking forward to taking a bath in radioactive liquid so we can grow that extra arm to use all this stuff.

An animated trailer showcasing the plot of the upcoming Pokemon Black and White Version 2 games was released on the official Pokemon website, and features the return of the villainous N and Team Plasma. Though the website notes that the video is not intended to be used during the games, the Japanese trailer sheds a little light on the characters involved in the DS sequels.
In addition to the familiar foes, it seems players can expect to see friends-of-the-hero Bianca and Cheren. The games are due out on June 23 in Japan and will launch some time in the fall in North America.

Think the Wii has the market cornered on gaming rehab? Think again -- neuroscientists at Newcastle University are developing a series of motion controlled video games to make stroke rehab more fun and accessible. The team's first title, dubbed Circus Challenge, lets patients digitally throw pies, tame lions and juggle to help them build strength and regain motor skills. As players progress, the game ratchets up its difficulty, presumably to match pace with their recovery.
Although Limbs Alive, the game's publisher, has only described their motion controller as "next-generation," it affirms that the game will be playable on PCs, laptops and tablets later this year. In an effort to lower costs and provide at-home therapy, the team hopes to leverage a £1.5 million award from the UK's Health Innovation Challenge Fund to build a system that will allow therapists to monitor patient progress remotely. The whole enchilada still needs some time to bake, but you can hit the break for a video and the full press release.

Excited for Nintendo's new tablet-esque controller? So are the kids in TT Games' QA department. An over-excited tester tweeted out an image of a slightly different Wii U slab than the one we laid hands onat E3 2011, teasing "look we what we have at work!" Answering the call does indeed reveal something worth looking at -- a somewhat wider looking Wii U slate featuring two full-sized analog sticks (as opposed to 3DS-like circle pads), a pair of unmarked button-like squares, and a new starboard home for the controller's plus and minus buttons.
The tweet was summarily pulled, of course, but not before our friends at Joystiq nabbed a screenshot. Naturally, the rumor mill started right up, churning out speculation of developer specific slabs, early prototypes and late redesigns. The truth? We'll probably need to wait until E3 to find out, but we reached out to Nintendo for a comment all the same. We'll let you know if we hear anything more thanthe usual "Nintendo doesn't comment on rumors and speculation" line.

[Parker] emailed us today to show off his latest NES portable build. This time he’s using the standard “top loader” NES instead of the typically used NES on a chip. This is pretty cool since the NES on a chip has compatibility issues with some games. For the screen, he uses a common PSone screen with a slight power modification. From the factory, the screen takes 7.4 V and converts it down to 5V to use. He removed this and ran it directly from his own 5V power source. It may not seem like that big of a deal, but with portables, every bit counts. He also ditched the sound amplifier from the PSone screen in favor of something a little more efficient. He seems to have done a pretty good job because he says it gets roughly 10 hours at full volume right now.
Another cool aspect of this deign is that the cartridge serves as a sort of stand for the unit, although the button placement looks like it might be a tiny bit awkward when used this way.

Let's say you liked adding GPS to your Nintendo DS. How about adding a Nintendo DS to your GPS?Toyota is trying just that through a new Smart Navi GPS unit in its Estima Hybrid minivan that will let passengers control the mapping system. Load up the Bluetooth-equipped Kuruma de DS cartridge and you can enter directions from the back seat instead of waiting for the driver's next chance at a red light. The automaker is also hoping to cut the "are we there yet?" levels of ennui to a minimum by providing trivia questions, hand-drawn map notes and a surfeit of tourist info. Mii characters speak out text information, and you can even use the car as a speaker system in the event your Starfox game needs that much more audio immersion. Estima buyers can get the new Smart Navi and Kuruma de DS in Japan on June 1st, although the $2,586 equivalent price for the GPS, the $92 cartridge and the cost of the Nintendo console itself might be too rich when you don't need a navigator to tell you that the princess is in another castle.

Mind Candy to offer 'new take' on smash-hit DS title
UK studio Mind Candy is developing a sequel to its hit DS title Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo.
As reported by MCV, the title will be a "new take" on the franchise, which has usurped Nintendo’s popular Brain Training as the longest chart topping DS game ever, currently stretching to 18 consecutive weeks.
The sequel is slated to be released later this year.
“We are extremely passionate about increasing the brand experience in as many ways as possible,” said Mind Candy marketing manager Andrew Matjaszek.
“[The sequel] offers a completely new take on the Moshi universe. We focus on the key characters in a similar way to Moshling Zoo. However, players will once again experience new locations, new characters and loads of new games to enjoy.”
