80% of Wii U's worldwide connected to the internet
Nintendo has achieved a record high number of downloads during the last fiscal year.
Speaking on its latest annual report, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said digital sales from its various platforms had doubled on the previous year, generating £104 million.
Iwata noted the deployment of add-on content, sales and titles such as Animal Crossing: New Leaf as the reason for the hike in digital downloads.
The amount of revenue generated through digital sales was also more than £25 million higher than the previous record year in 2010, in which Nintendo accrued £78m.
As well as record sales, the 3DS also broke Nintendo handheld records with an 87 per cent internet connection rate in Japan and 83 per cent in the US, with the number of connected devices continuing to rise.

Road Redemption, a spiritual successor to Road Rash currently seeking funding through Kickstarter, will be ported to Wii U by Dark Seas Games if it successfully secures support.
Dark Seas Games lauded the Wii U's tablet controller as a great tool for local multiplayer, bypassing the need to split the primary screen. The developer also considered support of the Unity engine and the Wii U's 2GB of internal memory as deciding factors for porting Road Redemption.
Road Redemption hopes to launch on PC, Mac, Linux and Wii U in July should it meet the goal of $160,000 on Kickstarter. It has pulled in close to $60,000 so far.

Toki Tori 2, the feathered Wii U puzzler that got us chirping, is patching in more hints following critical and community feedback. While Two Tribes feels it provided enough of a helping hand the first time round, the developer says it "noticed a number of people completely missed those hints and got stuck."
The patch, which is surfacing within two weeks' time by Two Tribes' watch, also introduces a new secret area, as well as a number of fixes and tweaks. Two Tribes also has a second, "more involving" patch in the works, but that'll take a while longer to leave the nest.

Wii U sells just 390,000 units since December
Nintendo has returned to profit for the year ending March 31st despite flagging Wii U sales.
The console giant, which last year reported losses of £284 million, generated nearly £47 million in net income for the year, thanks to strong hardware and software sales for the 3DS.
This was still only half of the profits Nintendo had previously forecasted however.
Total revenue for the company reached £4.1 billion, with overseas sales accounting for £2.8 billion, 67.1 per cent, of sales.
The Wii U sold 3.45 million units worldwide, with just 390,000 units sold since December. Total software sales for the Wii U to date are 13.42 million.

Nintendo looks set to stop production of its Nintendo DS handheld in the current fiscal year. Nintendo said today that it expects to sell ten million additional DS software units during the current business year ending March 31, 2014, but it offered no guidance for hardware sales, simply leaving the forecast column blank. To date, the dual-screened portable has sold more than 153 million units, easily making it the firm's best selling console. Only the PlayStation 2 has sold more (155 million).More than 933 million pieces of DS software have been sold since launch almost nine years ago.New Super Mario Bros. is the portable's best selling title at 30 million units, followed by Nintendogs (23.9 million) and Mario Kart DS (23.3 million). The DS was launched in 2004 in Japan and North America, followed by a European release in early 2005.The handheld has seen three redesigns during its lifespan; the smaller Nintendo DS Lite, camera-enabled Nintendo DSi and the larger Nintendo DSi XL.In 2011 Nintendo launched a successor handheld, the Nintendo 3DS. The platform holder revealed in its fiscal 2013 financial results this morning that 31 million 3DS units have been sold worldwide.Nintendo UK is yet to provide official comment.

Wii U failed to reach its sales target of four million units in the financial year ended March 31st 2013, Nintendo’s financials have revealed. That target was itself cut from 5.5 million in January.Nintendo’s new home console has now sold 3.45 million units worldwide. Nintendo previously confirmed that it had sold three million Wii Us in calendar year 2012, meaning just 450,000 units have been sold in the three months up to March 31st.Wii U’s predecessor Wii sold more than Nintendo’s new home console in the financial year just ended, shifting 3.98 million in the twelve months up to March 31st. It should be noted, though, that Wii U launched at the end of 2012 and Wii was on sale for the entire period. Wii software sales for the year came to 50.61 million units worldwide. On Wii U, Nintendo reported that Nintendo Land has now sold 2.6 million units globally, with New Super Mario Bros U shifting 2.15 million. Total Wii U software sales reached 13.42 million worldwide. On 3DS, New Super Mario Bros. 2 reached 6.42 million units sold, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf was bought by over three million people in Japan alone. 3DS hardware sales for the year ended March 31stcame to 13.95 million, and total software sales came in at 49.61 million.Net sales were 635.4 billion yen, with 67.1% of that total from overseas sales. Nintendo’s operating loss was 36.4 billion yen, due to the Wii U’s “negative impact” on profits.

The 3DS story has been one fraught with ups and downs.
A high price, coupled with negative press reports, a poor launch line-up and confused advertising forced Nintendo to cut the console’s price just three months after launch.
The 3DS’ unique selling point – a 3D screen – quickly lost its novelty appeal. The popularity of smartphones was taking its toll. And the press was far from kind. The announcement of the Circle Pad Pro accessory (which added a second analogue stick) was greeted with derision from the media.
Yet now, over two years since that difficult debut, and 3DS is on a winning streak. From Super Mario 3D Land to Resident Evil Revelations, the console now has a diverse library of critically admired software. Sales have risen significantly, particularly in Nintendo’s Japanese homeland. And its release slate for 2013 is arguably its most impressive yet.
“3DS has really come into its own over the last two years,” says Nintendo UK marketing and PR director Shelly Pearce.
“Along with the strong software line up, the introduction of the Nintendo 3DS XL last year has really helped invigorate the market.
“The Nintendo eShop has also gone from strength-to-strength. Each week we add to the eShop exclusives which are being met with a really positive response by both media and gamers. PullBlox, VVVVV and Dillon’s Rolling Western are all great examples. It also means that people have access to titles at varying price points with games available from £1.79.”
“DS is the largest selling games
console in the UK ever so
there was a lot to live up to." Nintendo UK marketing and PR director Shelly Pearce
One of the early issues faced by Nintendo was the perception that the 3DS was just another DS, only with a 3D screen. A misconception that Pearce says Nintendo ‘has worked hard to rectify’.
And that’s evident not just in its advertising, but its PR. Nintendo signed Aardman to create Shaun the Sheep short films for 3DS, the BFI were brought on board to encourage budding film makers to create movies using the 3DS, while The Saturdays were hired to promote the 3DS’ 3D camera. All activity to highlight that there’s a lot more to 3DS than a clever new screen.
It appears to be working, but 3DS has a lot of catching up to do if it wants to break from the shadow of its predecessor.
“DS is the largest selling games console in the UK ever so there was a lot to live up to,” says Pearce. “The DS has been on the market since 2005 whereas the 3DS is only two years in, so it’s comparatively young. Our aim is obviously to upgrade as many DS owners as possible and with our strongest ever software line-up and with games which appeal to all of our different audiences, this year really is the year of 3DS.”
It may sound like it, but ‘the year of 3DS’ is more than just marketing hot air designed to convince the trade the console has a decent year ahead. Just look at that release schedule.
Nintendo has dubbed 2013 ‘the year of Luigi’, what with the recent Luigi’s Mansion 2 and the upcoming Mario and Luigi RPG (plus Luigi DLC for New Super Mario Bros U on Wii U). But it’s also the year of Pokémon, and the year that marks the return of Brain Training, Animal Crossing and Donkey Kong.
Best of all for retail, most of these games are launching over spring and summer, two periods otherwise notable for a lack of games elsewhere.
“Summer is traditionally strong for handheld in-store and with the stellar line up in 2013 combined with an increasingly strong back catalogue, 3DS provides a strong in-store proposition,” says Pearce.
“We will see increased focus on key franchises in-store such as Mario, Pokémon and LEGO to further enable retail to capitalise on the buoyancy of the 3DS format throughout the year.”
3DS product manager Roger Langford adds: “We were really excited to kick off our ‘year of Luigi’ with the launch of Luigi’s Mansion 2 and we think this has set the tone for the rest of the year; it scored highly across the board and was positively received by fans.
“Fire Emblem: Awakening looks set to follow in Luigi’s footsteps with the game already getting 9s and 10s. Animal Crossing: New Leaf will be a key focus for us this June – both digital and physical sales in Japan have been incredible. And Pokémon X and Y is definitely going to be a highlight for us in the autumn.” Langford adds that we will see a lot of 3DS on TV this year alongside ‘significant’ online activity.
And sampling events and social media activity will play a big role for the platform holder this year. Meanwhile, Pearce hopes to keep attracting new demographics to the 3DS family, including women.
“We will see increased focus on key franchises
in-store such as Mario, Pokémon and LEGO to
further enable retail to capitalise on the buoyancy
of the 3DS format throughout the year.” Nintendo UK marketing and PR director Shelly Pearce “Whether it’s Super Mario 3D Land, New Style Boutique, Luigi’s Mansion 2 or the forthcoming Animal Crossing: New Leaf, we’re really starting to build an appealing female proposition.”
By the end of 2012 3DS had shifted 30m units. Nintendo has managed to avert a costly failure and given its handheld some momentum. A feat that bodes well for Wii U.
But the bosses at Nintendo HQ are still not happy.
30m units is still below the firm’s own lofty expectations, and so the pressure is on for 2013’s impressive release slate to deliver the goods. Yet there is optimism around 3DS now that was certainly lacking two years ago.
And there’s still more to come. Nintendo has yet to detail its plans to sell eShop games via the High Street, something the company says it’s planning to do aggressively – and soon. Smash Bros. is coming to 3DS, probably next year. Monster Hunter 4 is also on the way, and there’s bound to be a 3DS specific Zelda game in the works, too.
Nintendo has turned 3DS around. And all it took were some great games, an attractive price point and decent marketing.
Who’d have thought it?

The lineup for the Wii U Virtual Console, which launches sometime this week, has been announced. It contains eight games, all but two of which were released for the NES. The outliers, Super Mario World and F-Zero, were released for the SNES.The six NES games are: Punch Out!!, Kirby’s Adventure, Ice Climber, Excitebike, Donkey Kong Jr., and Balloon Fight.Note that the Wii Virtual Console contained games from more systems than these two Nintendo-owned consoles. Not only were there Nintendo 64 games, but Sega Master System, Commodore 64, and Neo Geo games, among others.Nintendo has also stated that GameCube games will be coming to the Wii U.

Canadian doctors believe playing Tetris can help children with amblyopia strengthen their lazy eye.
The team at McGill University in Montreal studied 18 adults and found that wearing a special pair of video goggles while playing Tetris helped train both eyes to work together, and worked better than conventional patching of the good eye to make the weak one work harder.
Dr Robert Hess and his team now want to see if this method would be a better way to treat children with the same condition.
In the study, nine volunteers were asked to wear the goggles for an hour a day over a two-week period while playing Tetris. The goggles allowed one eye to see only the falling objects and the other to only see the blocks stacking up at the bottom of the screen.
Another group played the game for the same period of time, but had an eye patch covering their good eye. The results revealed that those who used both eyes had more improvement in their vision than the patched group.
Finally, the news all gamers have been waiting for - video games are good for your eyes.

A few months ago I opined that the Wii U's Virtual Console, with its limited launch lineup, limited platforms, and limited upgrades from the Wii Virtual Console, was less than ideal. A few things have changed since then: some of the games have launched (for 30 cents), we have a solid launch date for the service in earnest, and there's a more detailed launch list. However, none of the basic issues have been fixed; the Virtual Console carries the same inherent flaws it did in January.
But for now, all is forgiven. Because Earthbound.

Nintendo is set to carry out extended maintenance on its online services today, ahead of the expected release of a significant Wii U system update. As Nintendo detailed last week, the Wii U update will reduce system loading timesand enable users to switch data between two USB drives. The patch will be followed by the launch of the Wii U Virtual Console, which will go live in the US tomorrow, according to a Nintendo of America Facebook post, which suggests that the system update will be released imminently.Nintendo UK's network maintenance information page says:Extended maintenance:From (approx.) Monday, 22 April 2013 21:00 to Tuesday, 23 April 2013 03:00 [1pm-7pm Pacific Time]Affected Services: - Wii U - Nintendo eShop
- Nintendo 3DS - Nintendo eShop
- Wii - Wii Shopping Channel
- Nintendo DS - Nintendo DSi Shop
During the extended maintenance, parts of the affected services may be intermittently unavailable.
Speaking last week during a Nintendo Direct presentation, company president Satoru Iwata said the Wii U update will enable players to "install downloaded software while playing another game, and install updates without being prompted". Software will also be downloaded and installed while the Wii U is on stand-by.

April 22nd, 2013, 22:21 Posted By: wraggster
It's a fantastic time to be a fan of crazy talk. We're living in age where gut-reaction analysis and attention-seeking comments travel faster than thought, and just a quick flick on Twitter is all it takes to catch at least one person making an arse of themselves under your nose. But there's one odd remark that, no matter how much I try to politely ignore, continues to return under my gaze: "the next generation of consoles will be the last".I don't know where to begin with that one. Perhaps the most obvious point to make is that a market which has managed to sustain 240 million consoles (a new record) from three competing companies (ditto) might actually be fairly happy with how things are going. And yes, they're also pretty chuffed with these inefficient £40 beasts called console games no matter how much you throw a passable 69p iPhone game in the mix. What actually annoys me isn't these wild claims themselves, but how those who make them seem so eager to jump from one statement to the next without a moment's pause. Is there not a case that we should stop for a moment and notice that, for example, social gaming has fallen off a cliff? Zynga is going the casino route and EA is busy not commenting on reports about it downsizing its social games division.I'd love to see some of the more radical opinion-formers of this industry provide us with a quick update on previous claims. Like when they claimed Facebook cow clickers would draw investment away from consoles and dominate the market. No time for corrections though; did you hear that mobiles, tablets and smart TVs will kill off consoles? There's another claim that's gone strangely quiet: "handheld games are dead". The problem is that, while it was once a pretty inoffensive and carefree comment to make, the fact that it hasn't happened seems to have been ignored. "The 3DS success is driven by one of the hardest-hitting software line-ups Nintendo has produced in years" Nintendo's 3DS has now sold 30 million consoles in its first two years since launch - a fantastic feat given how close that is to the trailblazing success of the original Nintendo DS (which, by this point, had shifted about 35 million). This success is driven by one of the hardest-hitting software line-ups Nintendo has produced in years, driven by a prodigious amount of work from the company. Today in the UK games charts, it was announced that the critically acclaimed Fire Emblem Awakening has entered at a respectable number three, in what is surely a foretoken to a major string of releases including Pokemon X and Y, Animal Crossing, the next Link to the Past, Mario & Luigi, Bravely Default, etcetera etcetera. There are still some issues with the handheld market, of course, from the fairly poor third-party support to the questions hanging over Sony's PS Vita. But Nintendo has once again proven that it understands its own market much better than the doubters have.Which brings me to the Wii U. Regulars at CVG might be aware that I talk down the console's chances in the most definitive language possible whenever asked. Well, from the things I'm hearing, there's a chance I'll soon be added to the reject bin of crazy talking twitter twonks pretty soon.Hopefully, if we obtain further details from our sources, we'll be in a position to explain more to you soon. But, for now, put it this way: In the past two years there have been moments of disquiet regarding the 3DS and - like an instant magic trick - Nintendo has put an end to this with sudden reveals of significant games that went on to become star performers at Christmas. It's a formula that works wonders and, with Mario, Mario Kart and Zelda games all due this year, clearly not something the Kyoto corporation has forgotten.
