Nintendo of America has hinted at an upcoming US release of a special edition Nintendo 3DS XL featuring Pikachu.
Polygon reports the company has run out a handful of teases, included the one pictured, pointing to an upcoming launch for the bright yellow hardware.
Nintendo first teased the model in a recently premiered commercial for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, which arrives in North America on March 24th.
Further, a photo of a retail shipment of the 3DS XL in question has leaked, with rumour that it will arrive on the same day as the launch of Mystery Dungeon.
The Pikachu 3DS XL originally released in Japan in 2012, landing in Europe later in the year.

Nintendo of America has confirmed plans to offer more free download content to Fire Emblem Awakening owners "all the way through spring". Nintendo will continue to push free content to users via the system's always-on SpotPass feature. The first of this content arrived for US players today; a new map called 'A Hard Miracle' apparently "follows the story of Fire Emblem Awakening main character Chrom as he encounters a mysterious woman and sets off on a journey with her to rescue a group of kidnapped villagers".On March 28, Nintendo will release 'Ghost of Blade', "a haunted tale about a ghost and the ultimate sacrifice", followed by 'The Wellspring of Trust' on April 11 which will add "a map full of challenging enemies".'The Radiant Hero' will release on April 25, which is set "on an isolated island as Chrom and his allies search for a legendary hero".Nintendo says it will also offer additional free content in the form of "special weapons, additional playable characters and bonus challengers for the game's Double Duel multiplayer mode" in the coming weeks.

Nintendo's Flipnote Studio (aka Moving Memo Pad) brought shareable animated sketches to users when the wildly popular free app first launched for the DSi console many moons ago. Now, Nintendo's brought it up to date for Japanese 3DS users with Flipnote Studio 3D, supporting stereoscopic 3D images with three layers of depth along with six colors. As before, wannabe animators in that country will be able to share their artwork in AVI or GIF formats with friends on the 3DS network at no charge, or post to a larger audience on the Hatena World Flipnote Gallery for a fee. You can check the video after the break for more, but it would help to understand Japanese -- or be able to parse YouTube's inscrutabletranslation.

In 2011, former Sony employee Seijiro Tomita launched a suit against Nintendo, claiming the 3DS infringed on a patent he holds to display 3D visuals without glasses. Today, a federal court in New York decided to award Tomita with $30.2 million in damages for Iwata and Co.'s infringement. The house that Mario built unsuccessfully argued that it didn't rely on key parts of the patent, and that Tomita was just one of several folks it met with when it was looking into 3D tech in 2003. Nintendo's pockets are certainly deep enough to handle the sting, but we can't imagine it's a welcomed loss with sales forecasts taking dips.

We’ve sure been seeing a lot of original NES cases used in projects lately. This time around the thing still plays the original cartridges. This was one of the mains goals which [Maenggu] set for himself when integrating the LCD screen with the gaming console. There is a quick video clip which shows off the functionality of the device. It’s embedded after the break along with a few extra images.
To our eye the NES looks completely unmodified when the case is closed. The cartridge slot still accepts games, but you don’t have to lower the frame into place once that cartridge has been inserted. The image above shows a ribbon cable connecting the top and bottom halves of the build. It routes the signals for both the LCD screen and the cartridge adapter to the hardware in the base. He mentions that he used the original power supply. We’re not sure if the original motherboard is used as well or if this is using some type of emulator.

It seems Nintendo has made good on its promise to utilise Wii U’s NFC tech by announcing a new Pokemon title that uses figures.
Eurogamer reports that Pokemon Rumble U, which was first announced last month, will allow players to purchase Pokemon figures that unlock in-game characters.
The use of the GamePad’s NFC tech has not been officially confirmed, but you can be almost certain it will feature.
Seven figures have been confirmed, with the first being Pikachu. The toys themselves will record game info internally. The core game will sell at a discounted ¥1,800 (£12.60) and the toys at ¥200 (£1.40) each.
There’s no word yet on a Western release for the game.
Nintendo will be counting on the allure of the still-popular Pokemon license to counter rival products from Activision and Disney. Of course, one advantage Pokemon Rumble U will (presumably) have is that it will not require an external ‘portal’ device to connect the toys to the console – meaning it will be able to undercut its pricier rivals.

Nintendo’s design boss Shigeru Miyamoto insists that he remains confident about the Wii U’s long-term prospects.
He does concede, however, that he had hoped for a better performance than the machine has achieved to date.
“I think that the Wii U still has a long future,” Miyamoto toldThe New York Times. “We really view it as being the ideal device that families are going to want to have connected to that screen in the living room that everyone is going to gather around and watch.
“Certainly in the short term I would want to see it performing with probably a little more momentum. I think in the long term I’m not at a point where I’m concerned yet.”
Miyamoto also made the bizarre claim that Nintendo has until now largely ignored the possibilities offered by an enhanced online infrastructure because the internet was simply not popular enough.
“For a long time at Nintendo we didn’t focus as much on online play because for many years doing so would have limited the size of the audience that could enjoy those features,” he argued.
“But certainly now we see that so many people are connected to the internet. It opens up a tremendous amount of possibilities.”

Mobile boom doesn't preclude strong next-gen sales, argues Zelda creator
If customers want games enough, they're more than willing to shell out for a new device, says Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto.
The creator of Mario and Zelda told the New York Times that although he'd rather see more momentum on the Wii U, he think's it's a device that will sell well in the long run.
"We really view it as being the ideal device that families are going to want to have connected to that screen in the living room that everyone is going to gather around and watch," said Miyamoto.
"Certainly in the short term I would want to see it performing with probably a little more momentum. I think in the long term I’m not at a point where I’m concerned yet."
Miyamoto points out that entertainment is an industry that ranges from amusement parks to hollywood blockbusters, and says this diversity brings unpredictability.

Despite its unbelievable popularity in Japan, Capcom's Monster Hunter series hasn't taken off to the same degree in western countries. Not to imply that the games don't have a dedicated stateside following – rather, the numbers just can't compare.
With Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate's North American release on the Wii U and 3DS right around the corner, Capcom will be attempting to grow interest in the brand the old fashioned way, by going to shows and talking to people about the game face to face.
"We have a full on booth, a Monster Hunter dedicated booth, at PAX, we have a Monster Hunter dedicated booth at Wondercon, we're also going to be attending C2E2 in Chicago, we have events that we're planning on doing at Capcom's offices in the near future," senior product marketing manager Laili Bosma told us during SXSW Interactive. "We're also looking to hopefully do a summer tour with Monster Hunter across the country."
Bosma gave the off-screen/cross-region post-launch patch announced in February as an example of how Capcom is actively listening and responding to the needs of western audiences. "Capcom is very dedicated to the brand, obviously in Japan being as huge as it is. But, the team is also dedicated to trying to make it work here in the US," Bosma said, though she recognizes that there's no magic fix for transporting popularity overseas.
"It's not magical, it's not going to happen overnight," she added. "My goal here is to try to get as many people to experience it first-hand, and for us to answer those questions as much as we can, and then hopefully grow that audience one person at a time."

Nintendo's golden goose Shigeru Miyamoto said that the console manufacturer didn't focus on online play until recently because it "would have limited the size of the audience that could enjoy those features."Shigeru Miyamoto.
This outlandish statement came out of a Q&A Miyamoto recently did with the New York Times. When asked about what he found most exciting about games right now, Miyamoto replied, "For a long time at Nintendo we didn't focus as much on online play because for many years doing so would have limited the size of the audience that could enjoy those features. But certainly now we see that so many people are connected to the Internet. It opens up a tremendous amount of possibilities."Yes, you heard that right. Finally, in 2013, enough people have the internet.Regarding the Wii U's disappointing sales, Miyamoto isn't sweating yet. "I think that the Wii U still has a long future," he said. "We really view it as being the ideal device that families are going to want to have connected to that screen in the living room that everyone is going to gather around and watch. Certainly in the short term I would want to see it performing with probably a little more momentum. I think in the long term I'm not at a point where I'm concerned yet."While the Wii U has failed to ignite the market, this isn't the first time a Nintendo product has sold poorly at launch only to pick up momentum later. Both the DS and its true successor, the 3DS, sold poorly on arrival before selling like gangbusters as the years went on. But the console market is more competitive and expensive and it's hard to say if the Wii U will be able to keep up.Ultimately, Miyamoto admitted that, "entertainment is an unpredictable industry" and "Nintendo's stance, over all, is that we don't know where entertainment will take us next."

Most TV stands don't have the space for the litany of home entertainment equipment we have these days, much less three different gaming consoles. Well, Ben Heck has decided to do something about it in a special three-part series: by cobbling together a PlayStation 3, an Xbox 360 and a Wii U and housing them in an all-in-one custom enclosure that would set any gamer's heart aflutter. The first step to this "Ultimate Combo Gaming System" is to tear everything apart, which is what Heck does in part one of the series, available to view downstairs. Let's just hope he'll repeat the process once he finally gets his hands on that mythical PS4...

Mario creator says developing meaningful GamePad interactions is key to Nintendo's strategy
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
Nintendo has a plan to boost the Wii U's flagging momentum at retail, and it starts with showing off just what the system can do. Speaking to Polygon, Nintendo icon Shigeru Miyamoto said Nintendo can do more for the system in terms of added features, a solid software lineup, and demonstrating the value of the system's second-screen controller, the GamePad.
"We're really focused on delivering content that takes advantage of that GamePad interaction and makes that second screen something that's very meaningful and so that's where we need to put our focus," he said. "So we're going to continue in the coming months to enhance the system, develop the system, and then also put our primary focus on developing strong content to make the Wii U a very appealing piece of hardware that I think when we get a couple years down the road it's going to seem very natural for people that Wii U is the system that they would have connected to their living room television."
Miyamoto said that players can expect some improvements to the system this summer. Nintendo has previously pledged to release system updates in the spring and summer to cut down on loading times, but that apparently won't be all. Miyamoto suggested that Nintendo would unveil the first use of the GamePad's near-field communications abilities this year.
However, other anticipated features are further out on the calendar. Miyamoto said the company was developing games that would support two GamePads, but that the timing wasn't right to bring those to market soon. As for cross-play using a 3DS, the designer merely said Nintendo is exploring the different ways it could leverage communications between the 3DS and the Wii U.

UK online games retailer ShopTo has cut the price of the basic Wii U console by £60 (about 25 per cent) following disappointing sales of Nintendo's latest system. ShopTo is offering the 8 gigabyte White Basic Pack for £190 - while the Black 32GB Premium pack is on sale for £280. This discount offer follows retailer Asda's decision to cut the price of both models by £50.CVG understands that the Wii U trade price has not changed, however. It was previously claimed the trade price for the basic model was £205, meaning that - if the number is accurate - retailers are selling the systems at a loss.A stuttering start to the Wii U launch has placed pressure on Nintendo to offer more appealing software as well as lower stock prices.Wii U games accounted for about 1.6 per cent of total UK software sales in January, and it has been estimated that North American Wii U sales came in between 45,000 and 59,000 units during the same month.Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently pledged to continue supporting Wii U, but said: "We think Wii U is a great machine. It just has to sell more."In January, Nintendo lowered its annual Wii U sales forecast from 5.5 million units to four million following weaker than expected demand for the console. However, company president Satoru Iwata moved quickly to rule out the possibility of a Wii U price cut.

Nintendo design guru Shigeru Miyamoto has admitted that the Wii U software library isn't yet as strong as he'd have liked, but says the platform holder is investing significantly in game development. Speaking to Time, Miyamoto suggested that the expense of getting to grips with the new platform impacted on the resources the company was able to dedicate to the development of games to launch alongside the system last year."From my perspective, I think ideally it would have been nice if we'd been able to releasePikmin 3 closer to launch, but the Wii U - though it shares the Wii name - is obviously a brand new system, with new chips and graphical capabilities," he said."It can do a lot more, and in the process of developing a lot of the features and functionality, the resources required to best utilize those features drew on some of the same resources that might have been spent developing games, thus we weren't able to bring quite as robust a lineup initially."Miyamoto added: "At the same time, we still have new things to learn about how to leverage the features and functionalities of Wii U in ways that create fun and interesting new ways to play, including new gameplay systems. As we become even more familiar with the hardware, we'll be able to do more from a software standpoint. That's an area we're currently devoting resources to."Nintendo confirmed a Pikmin 3 delay last December. The highly anticipated strategy game had been due to launch during the first calendar quarter of 2013, but will now release in the April to June window.Miyamoto said last week that Nintendo is currently prioritising the development of NFC-enabled Wii U games over those that support dual GamePads, and that the company hopes to show off its work in this area soon, even hinting at a possible reveal ahead of E3 in June.

Nintendo is working on a number of original animated shorts based on thePikmin franchise. Designed to be viewed on 3DS, the shorts will be released before the launch of Pikmin 3 and will either be given away or sold through the eShop."We really just want to take advantage of the Pikmin characters," Shigeru Miyamoto, who's overseeing the creation of the cartoons, toldPolygon."We have started selling Shaun the Sheep videos, so we're continuing to look at ways to expand the eShop offerings. Nintendo 3DS is great for viewing 3D video content so we wanted to look at ways to expand that offering."The first short will show Captain Olimar eating what looks like a Pikmin, but turns out to be carrots."When Olimar first discovered the Pikmin he named them based on the PikPik brand carrots in his home world, so he clearly loves carrots," Miyamoto said. "I thought it would be fun to have a scenario where it seems like he is going to eat the Pikmin. So it's kind of dark, but he doesn't eat them."Nintendo confirmed a Pikmin 3 delay last December. The highly anticipated strategy game had been due to launch during the first calendar quarter of 2013, but will now release in the April to June window.

Nintendo's creative mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto says Pikmin 3 ought to have been a Wii U launch title.\
He told Time Magazine, that the line-up was not 'as robust' as he'd have liked, and a triple-A, high quality game like Pikmin would have helped
He said: "If you look back at the launch of Wii, we were able to prepare a game like Wii Sports, which at the time was clearly a new game, and launch that alongside a Zelda game. With the Wii U, we took a similar approach by launching Nintendo Land as well as a Mario game — though we’re working on Zelda for Wii U, that’s going to take us a little big longer.
"From my perspective, I think ideally it would have been nice if we’d been able to release Pikmin 3 closer to launch, but the Wii U — though it shares the Wii name — can do a lot more, and in the process of developing a lot of the features, the resources required to best utilize those features drew on some of the same resources that might have been spent developing games, thus we weren’t able to bring quite as robust a line-up initially."
And Miyamoto hinted there's some innovative new concepts coming from Nintendo. And didn't rule out the possibility of creating a new character, either:
"Whenever I start working on something I always start with creating new gameplay. After that gameplay becomes more concrete, we look at which character is best suited to the gameplay. The ideal situation would be that we’re creating an experience that’s so unique that we can present it to consumers with a new character or IP in a way that would be easiest for them to really understand the concept. But it may also be that in some of those cases it makes more sense for it to involve some of the characters that are more familiar to our fans.
"When we created the original Wii Sports, we could have done it as a “Mario Sports” game, but we decided not to. Similarly with Wii Fit, that could have been a “Mario Fitness” game.
"It may be that in the future, as we’re generating new ideas, we’ll come across an idea that makes the most sense to release with a new character."
