Three years ago indie developer Jay Pavlina released the brilliant retro throwback Super Mario Crossover, in which you could play the original Super Mario Bros. as various well known characters from that era such as Link, Samus or Mega Man. Amazingly, each characters' special abilities were tailored to their powers from their source material and rejigged in such a way that it would fit the level's framework. As it turns out, smacking one's head isn't the only way to break a brick as shooting them or stabbing them with a downward thrust is equally effective. Now Pavlina and his studio, Exploding Rabbit, have released a trailer for the third iteration of the fan-favourite spin-off series. Due this May or June, Super Mario Bros. Crossover 3.0 will feature background assets from Super Mario Bros. 2, Castlevania and an Atari-style filter, while you'll be able to play as stranger folks like the sorta pyramid-shaped piece in Tetris.

Call of Duty: Ghosts, which recently appeared to have been outed by various retailer listings and promotional material, may be headed to Wii U and PC as well as Xbox 360, PS3 and next-gen consoles. That's according to since pulled product listings on Spanish retailer Xtralife's website (via Joystiq). While previous leaks pointed to a November 5 launch for the unannounced game, Xtralife's listings carried a November 11 release date.Activision told us last week that it wouldn't be commenting on Call of Duty: Ghosts reports, but the game is rumoured to be set for an official reveal on May 1.According to a now removed Tesco product description, "Call of Duty: Ghosts ushers in the next generation of the franchise, delivering a riveting all-new gameplay experience built on an entirely new story, setting and cast, all powered by a new next-generation Call of Duty engine."Among other rumours, Call of Duty: Ghosts is said to be set in the future, but a major plot event forces the characters to use modern day weaponry, while the Modern Warfare series' Spec Ops mode is said to have been dropped in favour of a new game mode.

Nintendo of America is selling cut-price refurbished handheld consoles directly from its official site. A 3DS - currently offered in Aqua Blue and Midnight Purple trims - can be had for $129.99, which represents a $40 discount on the cost of a brand new unit. Nintendo's also offering Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time bundles for $169.98.DSi XL consoles are also on offer, starting from $99 standalone, or $129.98 with a copy of Mario Kart DS.While you might be dubious of buying refurbished consoles from third party retailers, Nintendo says these consoles are "guaranteed to be fully functional", with only the possibility of "minor cosmetic blemishes"."Authentic Nintendo Refurbished Products are the only refurbished products in the market that have been cleaned, tested, and inspected to meet Nintendo's high standards," says Nintendo. They also come with the same one-year warrantee that you get with brand new consoles.

Nintendo's US online store is selling refurbished handheld consoles.
DS and 3DS units with 'minor blemishes' are available to buy directly from the firm at a slightly reduced price.
It's similar to Apple's refurbished store, which sells Macs, iPads, iPhones - often ex-models - at more affordable prices.
And like the Apple store, Nintendo is offering a full year's warranty on the products.
There are currently no plans to offer the same service in the UK and Europe at this time, a Nintendo rep told MCV.

Ubisoft's hotly anticipated open world sci-fi hackfest Watch Dogs will be on shelves this November.
A new trailer for the game, which you can view below, confirms PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC owners will be able to get their hands on it on November 22nd.
As reported earlier, it will also be a launch title for PlayStation 4, and is "planned for other next generation consoles" (yeah, we reckon they mean that one).
And, as is often the case these days, it will arrive in the form of multiple wallet-emptying SKUs. In addition to the standard game, there are four special editions that come bundled with a variety of physical and digital content.
The Dedsec Edition comes with a figurine of hacker protagonist Aiden Pearce, an artbook, soundtrack, map of Chicago, collectible Augmented Reality cards, badges and a collector's box. Bundled DLC includes three single-player missions: Palace, Signature and Breakthrough.
The Dedsec Edition will be available at selected UK retailers, while the Vigilante Edition will be exclusive to GAME in the UK and GameStop in Ireland. This SKU includes the game's soundtrack, the downloadable Palace mission and Aiden Pearce's cap and mask for players to wear. GAME will also exclusively stock the Special Edition, comes with the downloadable Breakthrough mission.
Finally, the Uplay Exclusive edition will be – you guessed it – exclusive to Ubisoft's online store uPlay. It will come in a Steelbook case and include codes for all three downloadable bonus missions.

Fceux SVN r2942 is compiled. FCEUX is a cross platform, NTSC and PAL Famicom/NES emulator that is an evolution of the original FCE Ultra emulator. Over time FCE Ultra had separated into many separate branches. The concept behind FCEUX is to merge elements from FCE Ultra, FCEU rerecording, FCEUXD, FCEUXDSP, and FCEU-mm into a single branch of FCEU. As the X implies, it is an all-encompassing FCEU emulator that gives the best of all worlds for the general player, the ROM-hacking community, and the Tool-Assisted Speedrun Community.

DeSmuME Wii SVN r253 is compiled. DeSmuME Wii is a port of the Nintendo DS emulator DeSmuME to Wii homebrew. This project aims to port DeSmuME to Wii homebrew so that we can have a fully fledged, working, Nintendo DS emulator on Wii. It is being built with DeSmuME 0.95 and the latest available devkitPPC and libogc releases.
DeSmuME Wii SVN Changelog:
r252
Two words: Paired. Single.
That's right. I got tired of waiting. I created paired-single versions of ALL of
the matrix functions. On average they run about 40-50% faster. This has been in
the works for a long time. There isn't any noticeable speed up that I could
find, but it's there, and a preview of things to come.
r253
Changed some formatting, fixed a few things, and included some code that might
potentially generate shadows (we'll see).

GameBoy Online (2013/04/26) is released. GameBoy Online is a Game Boy and GameBoy Color emulator written in Javascript. It strives to be efficient and try to have a perfect compatibility. Currently the execution speed is not optimal even on browsers. For example on Chrome, which is nevertheless deemed to run Javascript faster on a PC running Windows 7 64-bit version with a double heart 2 CPUs at 2.2 GHz, games run at normal speed but almost skipping some frames.
The sound production is still experimental and rather poor quality. The video portion is by HTML5 or by creating images with BMP string URI. State backups are implemented using the object window.localStorage and are serialized / deserialized JSON. Ditto for backup SRAM.
GameBoy Online Changelog:
- new settings added to allow enabling and disabling channels.

Project64 Git (2013/04/28) is compiled. Project 64 is a proprietary Nintendo 64 emulator for Windows. It employs a plug-in system that allows third-party software developers to create their own implementation of a specified component. Project64 allows the user to play Nintendo 64 games on a computer by reading ROM images, either dumped from the read-only memory of a Nintendo 64 cartridge or created directly on the computer as homebrew. Project64 started as an exercise by Jabo and zilmar in an attempt to see if they were capable of programming a Nintendo 64 emulator. It's open source now.
Project64 Git Changelog:
* Project64: 2.1.0.1

via http://www.aep-emu.de/
A new version of the multi-system emulators RetroArch (formerly known as SSNES) is released for Windows, XBOX, WII, PS3 and XBOX360.
SSNES is called RetroArch from now on, and ´libsnes´ is called ´libretro´ from now on.
Quote:
What is RetroArch?
RetroArch is a modular multi-system emulator system that is designed to be fast, lightweight, and portable. It has features few other emulators frontends have, such as real-time rewinding and game-aware shading.
What platforms does it support?
RetroArch sets the standard on cross-platform portability right now.
Linux (x86 and x86_64)
Windows (32bit/64bit)
Mac OSX (PPC/Intel)
Playstation 3 (PS3 SDK/PSL1GHT (WIP))
Xbox 1 (XDK)
Xbox 360 (XeXDK/Libxenon)
Wii
Raspberry Pi
OpenPandora
Why is it special?
Right now RetroArch is unique in that it runs the same emulator cores on multiple systems (such as Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC, etc).
For each emulator ´core´, RetroArch makes use of a library API that we like to call ´libretro´.
Think of libretro as an interface for emulator and game ports. You can make a libretro port once and expect the same code to run on all the platforms that RetroArch supports. It´s designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind so that the porter can worry about the port at hand instead of having to wrestle with an obfuscatory API.
The purpose of the project is to help ease the work of the emulator/game porter by giving him an API that allows him to target multiple platforms at once without having to redo any code. He doesn´t have to worry about writing input/video/audio drivers - all of that is supplied to him by RetroArch. All he has to do is to have the emulator port hook into the libretro API and that´s it - we take care of the rest.
