No DS slot cart plays GBA ROMs" was once the statement that echoed around these forums on a fairly regular basis. However that was before enhanced flash carts turned up and when the dust settled there it was the DSTwo that came out on top. It had a GBA emulator called NDSGBA and though it was far better than many would have hoped the GBA emulation on the PC and other devices had been near flawless for years and GBA flash carts were equally high performing. You could still play a lot of the spectacular GBA library but there were notable exceptions and drawbacks.
However following a little bit of community action the sources for NDSGBA were released and the TempGBA project was kicked off in earnest under the care of Nebuleon. Yesterday saw a new release that is something of a milestone with some nice speed improvements all on top of the massively enhanced GUI that the project got early on.

It’s wonderful news that Nightcrawler has fully inserted a translated script for Glory of Heracles IV for SNES. Looks like a great game.
However Nightcrawler still has a ton of work ahead of him, as pretty much all other aspects of the game still need work. He has mentioned before that, perhaps no surprise to anybody who has tried to play the game before, hacking the menus is going to be a nightmare of work. They feature very intensive use of the SNES’ HDMA effects, and they already look pretty full in the Japanese original. It’ll be amazing to see what Nightcrawler (and DaMarsMan, if he’s still participating) can pull off in the end, though. Nightcrawler hopes to get a menu system that is at least functional off to his translator to play through the game for an additional script check.

After focussing on Sega systems for quite a while, we felt it was only fair to give Nintendo some of the love they deserve. And what better way to do this than with a new issue of the cult classic Super Play magazine.
The first feature we have selected as a preview for this issue looks at just what it takes to create a game from start to finish. The game in question is Syndicate. After this one of a kind feature, we look at the review for the sequel to the NES game Solstice, which is titled Equinox. We also take a look at the shoot-em-up Bio Metal, and last but certainly not least we take a closer look at the platforming sequel to a long lasting shooter series: Pop'N Twinbee.

The Miiverse is expanding (just like the universe) and is scheduled to launch on the 3DS this year, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced in a financial presentation. Miiverse launched in Bowserbrowser form yesterday.
"We are also planning to make available a system update for Nintendo 3DS to allow its users to view and post content on Miiverse on the system within this year," Iwata said. Nintendo hopes Miiverse on the 3DS will prompt users to "understand the charm of the other platform, Wii U."
Miiverse was initially announced for the Wii U in June 2012 and launched with that console in November. The newest version of Miiverse is accesible via desktops and smartphone browsers, in beta form, currently allowing users to interact with their friends' feeds. It doesn't yet support creating new posts or new accounts, but Nintendo will "enrich the service incrementally."
Iwata wants the browser Miiverse to also influence user perception of the Wii U: "It will play an important role in having those who do not have Wii U understand the appeal of the platform through Miiverse."

Nintendo has launched a system software update for the Wii U, adding a new standby function to "download and install software while the system is powered off" and automatic background installation of eShop downloads.
The new software – bringing the Wii U to version 3.0 – also makes system setting changes, which include the ability to "transfer and/or copy between two USB storage devices" and "to select multiple software titles when transferring, copying, or deleting data." The Miiverse channel now supports the Wii Remote, Wii U Pro Controller and the Wii Classic Controller.
The complete list of changes, some of which improve "stability and usability," can be found after the break.

[h=2]Rumor: Japanese trademark suggests Dragon Quest Monsters 2 remake[/h]by Danny Cowan (21 hours ago)
10
A recently registered trademark in Japan hints that Square Enix may be planning to remake its 2001 creature-battling RPG Dragon Quest Monsters 2.
The trademark for "Iru to Ruka no Fushigi na Fushigi na Kagi" – yes, that's twofushigis – translates to "Iru and Luca's Wonderful Mysterious Keys." Iru and Luka were the stars in the Game Boy Color's Dragon Quest Monsters 2.
Dragon Quest Monsters 2 was originally released as a set of two cartridges, as was the popular thing to do back when the Pokemon craze was at its peak. Each cart featured a different playable protagonist and its own unique set of collectible monsters, which players could trade with others via the Game Boy's link cable. Both versions were later released in North America as Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Adventure and Cobi's Journey.
A remake of 1998's Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland launched for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan last year and met with stellar sales. The remade sequel will likely join its predecessor on the Nintendo 3DS, and the trademarked subtitle indicates that it will consolidate content from the two Game Boy Color releases.
A U.S. release for Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D has not been announced.

Owning a Wii U can feel like an exercise in patience: games and apps can take up to 30 seconds to load, and downloaded software needs to be manually installed. Thankfully, Nintendo heard its fans lamentations, and has issued the first of two major updatesdesigned to mitigate the problem. In addition to dramatically speeding up software load times, the update revises how the Wii U handles downloads and installs. Rather than manually having to install software, the system will automatically update, download and unwrap patches in the background, even if the console is powered down. The system update also puts the finishing touches on the Wii U Virtual Console, which is promised to launch officially in the coming days. Nintendo's old VC can be accessed a little quicker now, too, as the update now allows users to jump directly into thesandboxed Wii ecosystem by holding the B button during start up. All in all, a pretty solid update to a system that needs a little fixing. Check out the full list of changes after the break.

The first of Nintendo's planned Wii U firmware updates went live just yesterday, bringing a much needed speed boost to software load times. And in that short time since, Nintendo's also made its retro-gaming Virtual Console portal available to users, effectively bypassing the need to boot into the Wii emulator for access. The downside to this new, belated convenience is that users will have to re-download any previously purchased Virtual Console titles, though that additional cost is relatively low at $1.00- $1.50 for NES and SNES games, respectively. Unfortunately, you'll still have to wait a bit longer for those beloved Game Boy Advance and N64 classics to make their way to the VC, as Nintendo plans to include those games sometime "in the future." Still, withband-aid number one out of the way for the ailing console and a host of tried-and-true classics now easily accessible, Wii U owners have a little something to tide them over until that late summer Pikmin 3 launch.

By skipping the usual media briefing, is the Mario maker adapting to the times or just admitting defeat?
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
On Monday, Nintendo revealed that it will not be participating in annual E3-opening media briefing blitz. Instead, it will be holding separate, smaller events: one for its retail and publishing partners, and another at its E3 booth where a small group of journalists will be invited to play their latest games.
While it's still unclear exactly how different the impact of Nintendo's E3 showing will be without the traditional media briefing, the GamesIndustry International staff pondered a different set of unknowns. With the largest E3 headlines expected to go to new consoles from Microsoft and Sony, just how significant is Nintendo's absence from the media briefing arms race? Does this move speak more toward Nintendo's position in the market, or the relevance of the decade-old E3 formula for an industry in upheaval? And perhaps most fundamentally, is this a wise move on Nintendo's part?
[h=2]Steve Peterson[/h]Nintendo's decision to skip a big E3 event in favor of smaller events and some Nintendo Direct videos seems puzzling. Sure, putting on a big event at E3 is expensive (both in staff time and money), but it's a cost-effective way to reach mainstream media (the gaming press will cover Nintendo news however they get it). Why would Nintendo bow out?
"Nintendo's got a weak hand, so they're trying to play E3 as cost-effectively as possible."
Steve Peterson
I can think of several reasons. First, it is expensive, and Nintendo's trying to hit that 100 billion yen profit goal for the year with Iwata's job on the line. Second, Nintendo's event last year didn't generate the wave of enthusiastic press coverage they were hoping for, so why try again when it didn't work last time? Third, Sony and Microsoft will certainly get lots of attention with brand-new hardware; Nintendo's Wii U is not new and thus will suffer in direct comparison.
It's the direct comparison that Nintendo is looking to avoid, since the Wii U doesn't compare to the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft in raw performance. Plus Nintendo won't have anywhere near as many important new games to talk about as the competition, and certainly the Wii U won't have the level of third-party support the other guys will. Nintendo's strategy is to play it lower key, let the other guys have all the hoopla and spend all the money, and look to get some attention for a few important Wii U software titles.
Nintendo's got a weak hand, so they're trying to play E3 as cost-effectively as possible. There's no way Nintendo would win a direct PR battle at E3; better to save the money and spend it on marketing at Christmas, since sales are the ultimate goal. Nintendo will focus on direct connections with retailers and media, hoping to leave a good impression with minimal spending.

Having gone live in the US earlier this week, UK Wii U owners will be able to access the console’s new Virtual Console hub as of tomorrow.
Virtual Console allows console owners to download games from previous Nintendo systems and play them on their current machine.
The UK line-up differs from the US offering, missing NES duo Balloon Fight and Kirby’s Adventure but gaining Mario’s Super Picross.
All of the above feature instant saves, off-screen GamePad play and Miiverse community support.
Further releases from the Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros and Mega Man series have been confirmed, as well as the introduction of N64 and Game Boy Advance titles.
NES titles will cost £3.49 to download and SNES titles £5.49. Users who have previously purchased the same games on Wii can either transfer the original over for free and run them in Wii mode or else pay a discounted 99p/£1.49 to get the newer versions.

We speak to analysts about Nintendo's recent fiscal report and the company's move to give Iwata the additional role of North American CEO
[h=3]Nintendo of America[/h]
Nintendo's recent fiscal report revealed shockingly poor sales for the Wii U console, and while the company did turn a profit, it once again failed to hit estimates. On top of that, the company decided to hand over the North American reins to Satoru Iwata, giving him the additional responsibility of Nintendo of America CEO. What does it all mean for Nintendo, and can Wii U bounce back?GamesIndustry International chatted with several leading analysts to get their takes.
"Nintendo of America's performance the past couple years has been a disaster on almost every level. Much of this was due to lack of execution on basic stuff like product marketing," said David Cole of DFC Intelligence. "They forgot Marketing 101 for the Wii U and no product could have done well without basic marketing support. Clearly a change in execution was long overdue. The damage done is enormous but there is the possibility of a turnaround. The fact is that the general public is not really aware the Wii U even exists so it is an opportunity to almost start from scratch."
Indeed, Nintendo need only look to its 3DS strategy as an example of how the company could potentially fix the Wii U, said Asif A. Khan, CFO of Virtue LLC.
"I still believe Wii U will outsell past flops like the Gamecube, and Nintendo's brands will retain their value for decades to come"
Asif A. Khan
"I believe that 3DS offers a perfect template for how Wii U could succeed in the future," he said. "Nintendo had an equally poor 3DS launch lineup as we have seen with the Wii U. One thing that holds true for most systems they have made, software moves the hardware. Nintendoland was not as compelling and groundbreaking as Wii Sports was in 2006. The wow factor of the Wii U is very hard to advertise on television and with no robust third-party exclusives, the system's launch can definitely be characterized as a flop. This does not mean that the company is going to die."
"Nintendo is projecting a huge 674 percent increase in net income year-over-year and the bar is incredibly low going forward with the last two years being some of the worst financial performances in the company's history. What has given life to the 3DS in recent months is the introduction of high quality first party titles and I believe we will see the same process play out for the Wii U," Khan continued.
"Nintendo's biggest problem right now is balancing quality with quantity of games. It takes time to make high quality games, and they clearly don't want to overspend on this console cycle. This painstakingly slow approach to software development is why the company is still standing today after past weak console cycles. I still believe Wii U will outsell past flops like the Gamecube, and Nintendo's brands will retain their value for decades to come."
EEDAR's Jesse Divnich shares Khan's optimism for Nintendo. "Nintendo expects to sell an additional 9 million Wii U units this fiscal year, which is a positive sign for the hardware. While the past quarter numbers have raised eyebrows, Nintendo's confidence in next year does indicate they likely have a few promotional/marketing programs in the pipeline, along with the strong likelihood of stellar content we've yet to see," he said. "We know Nintendo has been in this position before with the 3DS and they were ultimately able to regain consumer confidence and wallet share. We've yet to see the best Nintendo has to offer for the Wii U. I am reserving long-term judgment on the Wii U until we see stronger first party content released. If a new Super Mario, Smash Brothers, Pikmin or Zelda game are unable to revitalize sales, then I'd begin to be concerned."
Clearly, action is needed to turn things around, and with Iwata now helming Nintendo of America as well, it may be easier to push out a more unified global strategy.
"Nintendo's historically central role in gaming could be permanently diminished if it doesn't execute better in the US in the next 12 months"
Lewis Ward
"The shift in structure likely speaks to a desire to bring Nintendo's Japanese and American operations closer, consolidate its strategic efforts and maximize the opportunities available to the company on a global level," said Scott Steinberg, CEO of consulting firm TechSavvy Global. "With one foot in America and one in Japan, Iwata's leadership may be able to better bridge the gap between audiences and markets, and ensure that the company continues to innovate and deliver high-quality content that appeals to all. The key to rebounding is focus, differentiation, and ability to communicate value - hopefully, Iwata will be uniquely poised and able to draw on the best of both worlds to achieve this goal."
IDC Research Manager Lewis Ward added, "I think Mr. Iwata understands that for Nintendo to grow overall in 2013 and 2014 that business has to bounce back in the US in particular. It's been here where the drop in Wii sales was sharpest in recent years and where iPhones and iPads and so forth have put serious pressure on the 3DS. I read this change in role as a signal that Nintendo's board will keep an exceptionally close eye on US trends in the coming quarters, and will do everything possible to boost Wii U and 3DS performance in the US."
"Nintendo will get a little leaner and meaner in 2013. The salad days of the Wii and DS family are gone and it could very well be that Nintendo's historically central role in gaming could be permanently diminished if it doesn't execute better in the US in the next 12 months."
Even if Nintendo does execute better in the next 12 months, it's going to be facing an incredibly competitive market as new consoles from Microsoft and Sony will likely be on store shelves, noted Billy Pidgeon, an independent analyst who previously worked at Inside Network, M2 Research and IDC. Pidgeon believes "Nintendo's FY 2014 forecasts for Wii U and 3DS are very aggressive relative to sector potential" and he also cautions that "ninth generation will be selling in more slowly across all vendors in comparison with the eighth generation as the console business has changed fundamentally."
It's hard to judge currently what sales volume ninth generation consoles will achieve, but it's ultimately important to keep in mind that Nintendo doesn't need to dominate any "console wars" to be successful. The company has a track record of being profitable, and if you're an investor, that's immensely appealing.
"I got quite a laugh this morning when I read the headline that Nintendo missed their profit expectations. The real headline to me is that Nintendo has returned to profitability," remarked Khan. "Considering many folks in the industry claim that this company is on a colossal death spiral, a weakening yen and new compelling software may prove bears wrong yet again. When the stock market prices a company for death and they don't die, there is usually a lot of upside to being a contrarian."

April 26th, 2013, 01:04 Posted By: wraggster
Saturo Iwata has admitted that Nintendo has failed to create sufficient momentum for both 3DS and Wii U.
However, the resolute exec insists that 2013 will deliver better things for both machines.
“In the US and in Europe we were unable to create sufficient momentum of the Nintendo 3DS system during the holiday season, and so the situation was not looking good at the beginning of the year,” he told investors.
“However, Fire Emblem Awakening was launched in February in the US and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon was launched in March in the US and in Europe, both of which were well received by our consumers. An overseas edition of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was also launched in March. Recently, with the launch of titles like these, we are seeing that the Nintendo 3DS sales are gradually gaining momentum.
“Currently, the overseas sales of Nintendo 3DS are still at a stage where the changes in the market are starting to emerge. We are aiming to make the momentum of Nintendo 3DS in the overseas markets more visible before summer this year.
“As for Wii U, it took off smoothly in the holiday season, but due to the lack of new software titles, we were unable to maintain the momentum this year. We initially hoped that Wii U would be showing more of a presence in the market by now, but the current situation shows that we need to spend more time on and put much effort into recreating the momentum.
“The release intervals of first-party key titles have been so much longer than we expected at the Corporate Management Policy Briefing in January that we have not successfully maintained the momentum of the platform. In addition, we have not been able to solidly communicate the product value of Wii U to our consumers yet, which has been a grand challenge for us.”
Iwata also returned to the company’s failure to properly communicate the Wii U’s features, admitting that the lack of a Wii Sports-type ‘killer app’ was a significant mistake.
“Some have the misunderstanding that Wii U is just Wii with a pad for games, and others even consider Wii U GamePad as a peripheral device connectable to Wii. We feel deeply responsible for not having tried hard enough to have consumers understand the product,” he added.
“Wii U might still have no such captivating game title as Wii Sports for Wii, with which people immediately comprehended its product value, but it surely has a lot of factors appreciated by users. We would like to take time to work thoroughly for its penetration, by making various efforts to have many people understand its product value as well as enriching the software lineup.
“Wii U has lost momentum due to the release pace of first-party titles which has not lived up to consumers’ expectations. Starting with Pikmin 3 scheduled for release in the upcoming July, however, we will intensively launch our key titles to give sales momentum to the platform.
“As a decisive factor in buying a console is that you cannot play a much-anticipated title without the hardware, we will do our best to have you feel from this summer to the end of this year that there are plenty of great games for Wii U.
“We have many titles whose release dates are yet to be announced. At E3, we will disclose more specific information about the titles for the rest of this year and early next year.”

April 26th, 2013, 01:00 Posted By: wraggster
It was once mocked for its reluctance to embrace online, but Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has told investors that the company has well and truly embraced the internet revolution.
Iwata confirmed that 80 per cent of Wii Us are now connected to the internet, making it the most connected Nintendo console ever released.
Although that’s no surprise as Nintendo only heard about the internet for the first time in 2012, RIGHT? Moving on…
The serious consequence of this, aside from the added benefits it offers gamers, is that Nintendo can now make a good fist digital retail. And the early results are promising.
“[Digital] sales in the last fiscal year more than doubled from the previous year and became the highest ever, surpassing the record high three years ago,” Iwata told investors. “The deployment of add-on content last year and the digital download sales of packaged software we started last July are contributing to the current sales growth.
“With regard to Animal Crossing: New Leaf we released in Japan last November, many consumers have chosen its download version partly because the game is one that you can enjoy every day over a long period of time.
“The other reason is the short supply of the packaged version of the game for a long time as its sales pace was unexpectedly high, but we could not increase production due to its special memory chip. We are very sorry about this, but we think a considerable number of consumers chose the download version as an alternative to the packaged version.”
But it’s not just playing catch up – Nintendo is actually taking the lead when it comes to the sale of digital goods at retail.
“Since last July, we have been continuing to make both packaged and download versions available,” he added. “A characteristic of our digital business is that we have also sold download versions at retailers in the form of POSA (Point Of Sales Activation) cards on the shelves. Thanks to the fact that retailers do not have to stock actual inventory, some convenience stores, including 7-Eleven, have made POSA cards available.
“We intentionally adopted different methods because, as we mentioned before, we thought that one of the biggest hurdles is the limited exposure of the digital download products. If only the consumers who proactively visited the Nintendo eShop were aware of the digital download software that we deployed, there would be no chance that our digital business would dramatically expand.
And Nintendo has also cracked another myth – that consumers won’t fork out for a digital game if it offers no cost saving compared to physical.
“Some might be sceptical about how much downloadable software would be sold at retail stores without any discounts from the suggested retail price of the packaged counterpart,” he explained. “Actually, however, as you can see, more than two-thirds of the download version of Animal Crossing: New Leaf has been sold through retailers.
“It is not necessarily correct to stereotypically position digital business as an enemy to retailers. Some of the consumers who bought the download version at a retail outlet might have had no knowledge of the Nintendo eShop before. Others might have had some psychological barrier to making online purchases, but chose the download version because they were able to make a payment at a retail store.
“In addition, we have recently started trying to have retailers put download-only software, not the download version of packaged software, on their shelves. I will keep you updated on our progress in future presentations.”
There are long-term benefits to this strategy, too, with Nintendo data suggesting that once a gamer has tried downloading software they are far more likely to do so again.

Nintendo may be skipping a “large scale” press conference at this year’s E3, but that doesn’t mean the publishing giant won’t have a presence there. In fact, they will be having a pair of smaller presentations, as Joystiq reports. Both events will take place on Tuesday before E3 itself, and will have two different intended audiences: the media and investment partners. The latter will be held at the Nokia theater, while the former will take place at Nintendo’s booth on the convention floor so that the media will be able to get hands-on time with the newly announced games.Nintendo Direct will still serve as a source of news from the publisher in the meantime.

Publisher opts for more personalized approach with expo floor software demos
Nintendo has taken a pass on this year's E3 press conferences.
Though the publisher has been a mainstay of the trade show for years and last year showed its Wii U console during the Tuesday press conferences, Nintendo has decided to change tactics for this year's event.
"First, we decided not to host a large-scale presentation targeted at everyone in the international audience where we announce new information as we did in the past," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told investors in a Q&A session last night.
"Instead, at the E3 show this year, we are planning to host a few smaller events that are specifically focused on our software lineup for the U.S. market. There will be one closed event for American distributors, and we will hold another closed hands-on experience event, for mainly the Western gaming media."
The new strategy seems to be about drumming up support for the Wii U's software lineup, and Iwata thinks this requires a more personal touch than the massive press conferences afford.
