E3 was a bit of a bust when it came to any big revelations from Nintendo (other than the surprise sneak-announcement of the Wii MotionPlus), but that has not deterred Everyone's Favorite Analyst Michael Pachter from anticipating big things in the months ahead.
As per his note to investors:
"There is some possibility that Nintendo will launch a new handheld device during the fiscal year. If so, we expect upside to both our revenue and EPS estimates this year, and solid growth next year." --Michael Pachter
And, if it interests anyone, he has also noted that Nintendo's first-quarter operating results are "almost exactly in line with our estimates," and has "FY:09 guidance for all financial and operational metrics."
He adds that "Nintendo's recent financial performance has been spectacular and we expect this to continue in FY:09," and they are "establishing FY:10 estimates of ¥1,800 billion in revenue and ¥3,700 in EPS."

Dragon Quest is popular stuff! Take the DS Dragon Quest V remake , which went on sale July 17th in Japan. Square Enix announced that the game has shipped over a million copies in Japan. It's interesting to note that Dragon Quest IV also moved a million copies (rather quickly, apparently!) when it went on sale last November. So pencil in all future DQ remakes at a million copies shipped, then!

As part of their freshly-dropped quarterly financials, Nintendo have decided to lavish special attention upon two of its titles. While neglecting to provide us with individual sales data for all their first-party games, which they've sometimes done in the past, they would like us to know how many copies of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii they've sold. And the totals may surprise you! Because while Wii Fit's been a media darling, and has captured Nintendo a ton of good press with morning television crowd, it's sold "only" 3.42 million units worldwide since launch. That's a little over half of what Mario Kart Wii's managed, with the plastic-wheel-packing GameCube update managing to sell 6.42 million units worldwide.

In 2006, the DS ruled Japan. (Heck, in 2007, too.) The hardware was hard to come by, and things got so back in 2006 that American DSes were re-imported into Japan to satisfy the demand. Things have tailed off considerably. According to Nintendo's Q1 FY3/09 statement, DS hardware sales dwindled, moving 580,000 units in Q1 this year. In last year's Q1, Nintendo moved a staggering 2 million plus DSes. Hardware isn't the only thing that suffered; DS software sales are down as well. Last year's Q1, 979,000 units of DS software were sold, compared to this part quarter's 493,000 units of DS software.
Same's true for the once red hot Wii console. In the previous year's Q1, Nintendo shifted 950,000 units. This past quarter, Nintendo sold 530,000 Wiis. Good news is that Wii software sales are up. Last year Q1, Nintendo moved 2.78 million units of Wii software. What about Q1 2009? A strong 3.9 million units. As the domestic business continues to diminish, Nintendo is clearly finding success with customers in North America and Europe. Japan, it seems, is on the decline.

Is Sega dipping into the well of Dreamcast franchises again? That's what we heard from friendlier folks at Comic-Con last week, specifically that the publisher was planning on bringing back one of its more beloved franchises, Jet Grind Radio. After outings on the Dreamcast and Xbox, we haven't seen anything of the futuristic inline-skater since 2003's Jet Set Radio for the Game Boy Advance.
We were overly excited to hear a rumor that Sega was planning on reintroducing the series, this time on the Wii.

Yesterday, Kotaku reported on Nintendo and 54 software makers filing an injunction to stop the sales of the R4 and similar devices in Japan. For the uninitiated, the R4 allows you to download DS games online and play them on your DS. Yes, DS piracy. And now said piracy is threatened! So what does that mean? R4 sales are through the roof. Hell, even I bought one yesterday.

Newly released today:
Rhythm Tengoku Gold is a game suitable for people of all ages. Just follow the rhythm of the song with a simple sequence of button presses. There are no complicated rules or daunting moves to initiate, so just relax and enjoy the game.
Rather than taking in all the visual cues, adjusting yourself to the rhythm is more important. Flick and slide your touch pen across the screen to direct your actions, let your instincts guide you. Since music is of utmost important in rhythm games, the developers in Nintendo joined forces with Tsunku, a famous song writer and music producer when they created the game.
There are numerous fun mini-games in this simple rhythm action game, joining in the chorus of a song, picking vegetables and gobbling buns to the music are only some of them. The game also comes with a number of settings for you to tweak at, like a stereo system and a resources section.

Newly released today:
This installment in the hit Dokidoki Majo Shinpan series takes place weeks after the first game. Nishimura Akuji, a normal third year middle school student is summoned once again by the angels to start another witch hunt.
This time the hunt takes him to a far away town called Yon Town. To carry out his mission, he masqueraded as a student in a school said to have been set up by witches. However, since his academic scores are bad, he ended up in second year instead of third year. To add insult to his injured pride, he is paired up with a converted demon, Kuro.
Because of Kuro's clumsiness, Akuji's cover is blown. When his neighbor Seika Koron, another clumsy girl, finds out about his mission, she is determined to help him out. Witches, angels, demons and girls, Akuji's in for an interesting middle school life.
The game is split in an adventure part and a magic battle part. Search for items, gather information about suspected witches and chase after them. Launch into battle mode when the suspects refuse to cooperate, the rules in battle are simple, just deplete your opponent's HP bar and you win.
Once you have won your battles, search their bodies for the mark of the witches, clear the marks on the possessed and aim to capture their hearts as well. In this installment, you can search unpossessed girls' bodies as well as long as you have cleared certain requirements in the game.
As for mini games and unlockable stages, search for reversed colored pandas and the bunnies hidden around town, the more you catch, the more stages you can unlock.

The release of Guitar Hero: On Tour might make homebrew games like Video Game Hero seem obsolete, but this project has two great things going for it:
Unconventional music tracks like "Eye of the Tiger" and the Inspector Gadget theme (after the post break)
It's free (provided you have the hardware to run homebrew programs)!
The touchscreen controls are nice to have, but we'd really love to see Video Game Hero support On Tour's Guitar Grip, especially since we've already seen one other homebrew application utilize the slot-2 accessory. Whether or not programmers Sumiguchi and Daydream decide to add that option, we'll make sure to check this game out when they release it this August 20th!

July 30th, 2008, 23:51 Posted By: wraggster
Newly released today:
Do things cease to exist if we forget about them?
For every decade, a special ceremony is held at a shrine in Oborotsuki island. 10 years ago, during a traditional Japanese concert, a case of suspected abduction occurred. Five girls disappeared without a trace as if taken away by supernatural forces.
Although the case was solved by a policeman, the girls seemed to have suffered from a special form of amnesia, they have forgotten what happened during their abduction. The amnesia disturbed the girls, but this matter seemed to have been settled when they moved away from the island.
However, unlike what everyone thought, this case was not over. 10 years later, two victims from the case were killed in a brutal manner and the survivors suspected it has something to do with Oborotsuki island. To find out about the truth behind the case and stop the killing before the culprit takes another life, two survivors, Misaki and Madoka set off to the island they have moved away from so long ago.
The remaining survivor Minatsuki Ruka seemed to be the only one who still retained some remnants of memories from her abduction ordeal. She remembered a melody, a group of musicians being surrounded by a circle of masked men and a masked woman who danced as if she was possessed by spirits. In search of the truth behind the memories and images that plagued her life, she, too set off for the island after Misaki and Madoka.

Newly released today:
Flying is a key element in this 2D fighter. The kingdom of Gawain is located in the center of the world. The strength of the inhabitants depend on their performances in the battle arena. Although the fights are timed, with their use of their special weapons called Windy, the participants can fly freely in the sky during battles.
With the emphasis on Windy and battles, the skills of the wielder and the level of the weapon soon became a symbol of power. To determine the fittest amongst the fit, a combat event is opened where the winner's any wish will be granted.
Tempted by the prize and the fun of battling out of gravity's control, this event attracted Windy Wielders of all races, and this include Izuna the unemployed ninja and her friend Kunoichi.
In this game, being blown away by your opponent does not mean an automatic K.O. Time your attacks and fly up into the sky before you launch your sure kill attack. The game makes use of the double screen feature of your DS console to allow you more control when you are up in the air. Make use of the training mode to practice flying and the wireless function to take on other Windy players you know in the real world.

We've often wondered how Nintendo could possibly out-do the Wii in terms of innovation. Now we know the answer to our question is possibly "nothing." Speaking with Forbes on the topic of future consoles, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata admitted it will be difficult to one-up its latest console effort. When asked about the importance of hardware innovation, Iwata explained that "This time around, it happened to be we had a revolutionary user interface. Will it be the same for the next generation? I really can't tell."
"It's natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different," Iwata added, admitting, "If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it's going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again." In the article, Iwata confirms that Nintendo is actively developing its next machine, but seems far more interested in software offerings. "The hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games," he said. Reluctantly, Iwata-san? People are practically buying Wii without knowing what it even does.

"It prints money" just isn't going to cut it anymore in conveying Nintendo's cash flow. The House of Mario announced today that in its first quarter the company brought in $993 million (+34%) in profit! Net sales were up 24% to $3.91 billion. The company sold 5.17 million Wii consoles globally (+50%) and 6.94 million DS units, which means the total lifetime sales of the units are 29.62 million and 77.54 million units for the Wii and DS, respectively.
In the software department, Mario Kart Wii drove away with 6.42 million units sold and Wii Fit continued its quest to save the Fat Princesses with 3.42 million units in people's homes -- more than likely collecting dust, along with the Bowflex and Thighmaster. Nintendo maintains its forecast of reaching a net profit of $3.04 billion and operating profit of $4.97 billion by the end of its fiscal year in March '09.
