Many Hackaday readers might remember the days of buying modchips from somewhat questionable sources. These little devices connect to a gaming system to circumvent security measures, allowing you to run homebrew games (and pirated games, but lets not focus on that). [Guillermo] built an open source hardware Gamecube modchip based on the XenoGC.
The XenoGC was a popular modchip back in the Gamecube days, and its source was released in a forum post. A Wiki page explains how to build a clone of the device based on an ATtiny2313. Most modchips were closed source, but this project lets you look at how they work. You can browse the XenoGC source on Google Code to learn more about the exploit itself. You’ll find the AVR code, which manipulates the DVD drive over a serial interface, in the XenoAT folder.
[Guillermo]’s hardware is available from OSHPark, so you can easily order boards. He’s also hosted the design files on Github. With one in hand, you can start building homebrew for the Gamecube, which can probably be picked up for around $25 nowadays.

For reddit user [the_masked_cabana], button mashing has taken on a whole new meaning. His gigantic NES controller coffee table makes it hard to punch in the Konami code without breaking a sweat.
Even before discussing the electricals, this is one impressive build. Each component was cut from multiple layers of MDF and assembled with screws, glue, and putty. Once they were sanded smooth, he used layers of carefully applied Krylon paint to achieve a plastic sheen that is remarkably faithful to its 5″ counterpart. For the more precise lettering, custom cut vinyl stickers did the trick.
Of course, looking the part is only half the battle. Tearing apart an original NES controller, he soldered wires to the button connections and ran them to eight arcade style buttons located under the replica button covers. A collection of bolts and springs keep everything aligned and produce the right kind of tactile feedback to the user. A removable cable in the back provides the connection to the console.
If a four foot NES controller isn’t practical enough for you, he also added some storage space in the base and a removable glass cover that converts the controller into a coffee table. For more details on the build, check out the reddit discussion. You can also find an eerily similar working NES controller table in this geeky coffee table roundup from five years ago.

Nintendo has announced a planned digital release for an HD Wii U version of Wii classic Wii Sports.
It will be called Wii Sports Club and can be purchased in a number of ways, CVG reports.
All of the five included sports – tennis, bowling, golf, baseball and boxing – can be played for one day for £1.79. Alternatively, they can be purchased permanently on an individual basis for £8.99 a pop, although only tennis and bowling will be available initially.
Upon downloading the pack for the first time users will also be given 24 hours of free access.
Furthermore, every game will include online multiplayer and Miiverse functionality, although users will require a MotionPlus controller as apparently each has “more refined” controls than the originals.
NintendoLife meanwhile reports that in the US Nintendo has revealed plans to give away a month’s free access to Wii Fit U. Access to the game after that period will require the purchase of a $19.99 Fit Meter accessory that tracks a user’s daily physical activity.

Capcom’s Monster Hunter 4 has sold a ton of copies out of the gate and, according to the latest charts in Japan, 3DS sales are benefiting because of it.
VG247 reports on Japanese analysis firm Media Create’s sales charts, showing the game moved more than 1.7m copies in just its first two days of availability. For comparison’s sake, the runner-up in the software category – AKB1/149 Renai Sousenkyo – sold 27,052 copies in its first five days.
The weekly charts also show a significant spike in both the 3DS LL and older 3DS model. The LL followed up last week’s 60,077 total with 236,700 units sold this week, while the earlier generation 3DS moved 40,092 units – versus 19,114 the week before.
A Famitsu report has Monster Hunter 4 selling even more than Media Create’s numbers state, claiming the game moved 1.875m copies in the timeframe. Regardless, it seems clear Capcom has a system seller on its hands.

Hiroshi Yamauchi died this morning at the age of 85.
Yamauchi became Nintendo president back in 1949, succeeding his grandfather. He immediately recognised the potential of electronics and was the man responsible for the publishing Shigeru Miyamoto’s Donkey Kong in 1981, kickstarting the company’s transition to what we know it as today.
Despite having no background in gaming, he oversaw the entire publishing process and was personally responsible for the release of nearly every major Nintendo hit for over two decades.
He continued in his role until 2002, overseeing the launches of the NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance in the process. He was succeeded by current president Satoru Iwata.
Yamauchi remained a member of the Nintendo board until 2005 although he maintained a significant stake in the company – helping him to become one of the richest men in Japan.
A statement from Nintendo given to MCV said: "Nintendo is in mourning today from the sad loss of the former Nintendo president Mr Hiroshi Yamauchi, who sadly passed away this morning."
In a world where the word legend is criminally over-used, Hiroshi Yamauchi is a man certainly befitting of the title. MCV offers its condolences to his friends and family.

September 18th, 2013, 02:13 Posted By: wraggster
Mighty No. 9, a modernised spiritual successor to Mega Man, will now be developed for Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo's Wii U, following a huge backing for the game on Kickstarter.
The "classic side-scrolling action game" is being developed by the co-creator and longstanding custodian of the Mega Man series, Keiji Inafune, and immediately gained significant backing from the community. Following its reveal on Kickstarter in early September, the project had raised more than $800,000 within three days.
Now with the initial funding target met, Inafune's team is listing additional rewards if further milestones are reached. The team pledged it would port the PC game to current-gen systems if funding surpassed $2.2 million - a goal which was achieved on Monday.
The next major stretch goal is $3.3 million, which would result in versions for PS4 and Xbox One. Fourteen days remain on the Kickstarter page.
Following Capcom's decision to cancel an internal Mega Man project, Inafune announced in October 2010 that he would resign as head of development at the publisher. Later he established his own company, Comcept.
His work at the corporation covers numerous successful series over three decades, from Onimusha to Dead Rising and Mega Man.
Mighty No. 9, now in pre-production, follows the story of Beck - a character with a reconfigurable body who bears a striking resemblance to the Mega Man character. It is said the new game "takes the best aspects of the 8- and 16-bit era classics you know and love, and transforms them with modern tech, fresh mechanics, and fan input into something fresh and amazing"."You play as Beck, the 9th in a line of powerful robots, and the only one not infected by a mysterious computer virus that has caused mechanized creatures the world over to go berserk. Run, jump, blast, and transform your way through six stages you can tackle in any order you choose, using weapons and abilities stolen from your enemies to take down your fellow Mighty Number robots and confront the final evil that threatens the planet!"
The estimated release date is spring 2015.
Comcept's core team features developers with extensive experience at Capcom and have contributed to numerous Mega Man projects. Staff includes Naoya Tomita (level designer of the original Mega Man) and Manami Matsumae (who composed the soundtrack of the original).

Capcom has shipped 2m Monster Hunter 4 units out to retailers just days after its arrival on Japanese shelves.
The publisher announced the milestone for the latest effort in its popular action RPG, claiming that the game has had more shipments in its first week than any other third-party 3DS title in Japan.
VG247 further reports that actual sales figures for the game’s launch week are expected to arrive next week, adding that total sales for the franchise now exceed 25m copies.
Capcom has yet to make any mention of a western release for the game, but the title’s predecessor Monster Hunter 3 did eventually make it out of Japan.

September 17th, 2013, 00:10 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo in Japan has recognised a growing consumer demand to unify online accounts across the 3DS and Wii U, according to an executive at the company.
Dan Adelman, Nintendo of America's head of business development, said Nintendo has definitely "heard that feedback many times from both inside and outside the company". However, he was unable to commit to unifying the consoles' online accounts for customers.
"It's definitely something that we're very much aware of. All development for the infrastructure really happens out of Japan, so we've kind of communicated this need in the market, and they're very much aware of it and working towards really just always improving the eShop," he toldDestructoid.
Currently, owners of 3DSes and Nintendo Wii Us must maintain separate online accounts for purchasing games, managing data and collecting bonus items. This puts Nintendo in an unflattering contrast to Sony, which has unified its PlayStation Network across PS3, PS Vita and PS4 systems.
Adelman, a Nintendo executive who was working at Microsoft when the company launched Xbox Live Arcade, spoke highly of the Wii U's appeal for indie games developers.
"I think indie developers by their very nature are open to taking risks," he said.
"They don't have big shareholder communities that they have to answer to. It's really trying something new and taking the path less taken."
He said it was his personal ambition to help get indie games recognised within the wider casual market.
"If you talk to someone outside of the gaming industry, someone who doesn't necessarily follow [or] read all the blogs and keep up with the latest news, a lot of them are really unaware of a lot of these games. They've never heard of them, don't know that they even exist. So right now, it's a little bit of a niche audience of people who follow all of these games.
"But I'm personally convinced that if you get these games into people's hands and they try them, they'll be shocked. They'll be surprised at how good these games are.
"So I spend all of my time playing indie games; frankly, it's been a while since I played a full retail game just because there's so much great stuff out there."
It was claimed in the Destructoid article that as many as 80 per cent of Wii Us have established a connection to the internet.

GBA.js Git (2013/09/12) is released. Jeffrey Pfau released a new GameBoy Advance emulator. The project began last July. The first prototype took him five weeks. But it has worked for several weeks and several hours a day online prior to the first public version. The program runs on JavaScript. It is available online and works in a modern web browser. It runs on Chrome 20, Safari 6.0, Firefox 15 + (without sound) or Opera 12. It should also run on Internet Explorer 10. Firefox and Opera are particularly slow, it is better to use Safari or Chrome.
As a matter of law, no rom is provided on the official website. However, you can load these roms on your machine. The emulator does not handle compressed files. So please only download roms decompressed. The application sometimes crashes if the file has special characters.
Currently all parts of the GameBoy Advance hardware are implemented. You can save and load backups, send on your machine or your machine. GBA.js is able to take screenshots. It can set the emulation paused. It supports games containing real-time clocks (eg Pokemon).
GBA.js Git Changelog:
* Move hex from console.js to util.js, fixing SIO logging
