Lik Sang posted this article:
Last week we were raving about the Japanese Gold NDS, and this week we have what's quite simply the best value NDS bundle yet. Straight from the US is the Mario Kart Hot Rod Red Edition, which along with including the full Mario Kart game released just two weeks ago (normally US$ 49.90 on its own), you get a red NDS edition with custom checked flag wrist strap and a flame racing skin to stick on the back. We expect a first delivery this Thursday and then some more additional stock around the week-end. If you are holding a preorder, watch your mailbox around the end of the week for a tracking number.
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time - NDS (US)
This week is the launch of Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time for the NDS, sequel to the extremely loveable and successful Mario & Luigi, better known to importers as Mario & Luigi RPG. At the end of the original game Bowser was defeated and the future looked brighter than ever, but now it's the past Mushroom Kingdom has to worry about. Skipping back in time to when the plumber brothers were but babies, aliens named Shroobs decided they would invade. Thankfully grown-up Mario and Luigi use a time machine to go back and along with the two babies, try to save the day. That's right, with double the screens comes double the characters! Switching between the big and little guys with the touch of a button, you can use their size, or lack of it, to reach new areas. Then when you split up, keep track of both teams at once on the two separate screens.
Not only can the two Mario bros. team up against enemies like last time, but with the right timing you can double your damage here by using the babies too. Likewise there's many brain twisting puzzles that use the extra characters, and as with the original no doubt there will be many new gameplay aspects introduced throughout the adventure. Combat wise this time an emphasis has been placed on good timing to pull of moves rather than memorizing button combinations. With all the RPG aspects you'd expect, plenty of humor, giant bosses, and not to forget a whiny little Prince Bowser, Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time is sure to delight, and being released in the US first, it's in stock within the next few days.

Color us unsurprised. Companies tend to make their major announcements at E3, and Nintendo’s given very clear indication that they’ll be doing the same this coming May with the following announcement, sent to us this morning under the subject of “Save the Date for Nintendo:”
”You’re probably just starting to plan your time for 2006. With a mere 165 days to go (give or take), it’s time to start thinking about next year’s E3. Nintendo is most certainly thinking about it. So pencil us in. You’ll hear all the incredible details about Nintendo’s upcoming games and hardware, including our next home console, code-named Revolution. You won’t want to miss it. See you there.
WHAT: Nintendo’s E3 Media Briefing
WHEN: Briefing begins at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9, 2006.
WHERE: Kodak Theatre (home of the Academy Awards), Hollywood & Highland Center, 6801 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028
WHY: You know why.”
Let’s do a little close reading.
”Mere 165 days to go” = understatement for emphasis. By announcing this far in advance, Nintendo’s promising the grand finale unveiling. Contrast to TGS: we didn’t know until a couple days in advance that the company intended to show the Revolution controller at Tokyo Game Show. The cards are all on the table now.
”code-named Revolution” = We’ll finally be told the final name for the console.
”You know why.” Cheeky monkeys.

And you thought their last adventure was insane? In this sequel to Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, the brothers travel back in time to retrieve Princess Peach, only to come face to face with baby versions of themselves, the princess and Bowser. Teaming up with their young selves will soon send Mario and Luigi on a quest of lunatic proportions as players must control both the adult AND baby versions of the Mushroom Kingdom heroes. Players use the top screen to study the land, keep track of the pair or brothers not under their control or maximize combo moves in battle. With twice the Mario brothers and twice the laughs, this massive side-splitting adventure could only find a home on the dual screens of the Nintendo DS.

Final Fantasy IV is the Japanese name for what was released in the US as Final Fantasy II, the first Super NES version of Square's immensely popular RPG series. Though the game's main design -- including 18 towns and castles, dozens of spells and hundreds of monsters -- remains intact in the move from SNES to GBA, additional game elements unique to the handheld version have been added to the production.

Addictive puzzle action is coming to the palm of your hand with Dr. Mario and Puzzle League - two fantastic puzzle games on one Game Pak! Dr. Mario requires equal parts strategy and speed to achieve victory. The object of Dr. Mario is to delete viruses by throwing vitamin capsules into a bottle. To delete the nasty critters, you must form a row of four or more same-colored capsules or viruses. Since many of the viruses are trapped at the bottom of the bottle, you must plan ahead in order to eliminate them. The object of Puzzle League is to form a chain of three or more same-colored blocks. As you play, the blocks will rise from the bottom of the screen, forcing you to make decisions in the blink of an eye! When you match up shapes, the blocks on top will fall onto other matching blocks, creating a very satisfying combo effect. This game also has unusual depth in terms of options and settings, (such as adjusting the speed of the cursor or the kinds of blocks on the screen), which lets players create a custom game experience.

During its pre-E3 press conference in May, Nintendo disappointed many by revealing little about the Revolution. Other than showing off a mock-up of the console form factor and announcing the console would play NES, SNES, N64, and GameCube games, the game giant revealed little about the next-generation console. In the months since, it has let a few details about the Revolution trickle out, the most significant being pictures of its much-vaunted controller--which has been much-derided for its resemblance to a TV remote control.
Today, though, gamers got a definite date when Nintendo will absolutely, positively reveal the Revolution in all its glory. The Mario factory sent out a "save the date" e-mail this morning saying that in "a mere 165 days to go (give or take)" it will reveal "all the incredible details about Nintendo's upcoming games and hardware, including our next home console, code-named Revolution."
So when will be the Revolution's coming-out party? Unsurprisingly, it will be at next year's E3. Specifically, the console will be unveiled at Nintendo's pre-E3 press event, which is slated for 9:30 a.m. Pacific time on May 9, 2006. The venue will be the Kodak Theatre--home of the Academy Awards--in Hollywood, California.

Nintendo’s Revolution has stirred the rumors mills yet again. This time fansite RevoGaming claims to be relaying information from two anonymous sources inside the gaming industry. The scoop is simply that the processor, codenamed Broadway, has been completed and shown to Nintendo and select developers. While one of the sources claimed it was a dual core processor, the other wouldn’t comment on technical details.
There isn’t much meat here and without official sources, it’s a pretty thin rumor; however, the timing is about right for Nintendo to be getting silicon out the door to developers if they hope to have any games ready.

A patent granted last month to Nintendo by the US Patent Office may give new insight into the "Virtual Console" system in the Revolution console, which will allow players to access the firm's back catalogue of titles on the new system.
The patent, No 6,955,606, provides details of a technology which allows a technologically superior console to play games from an older, technologically inferior device, using emulation software and a game selection interface.
Nintendo has previously announced that the Revolution will play a back catalogue of NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube titles, with games for the first three systems being made available for download online or bundled on Revolution game discs.
The system also has half a gigabyte of built-in flash memory for storing software, and according to the new patent, players will be able to select which game they want to play from a screen which lists series according to their specific franchises, and view additional information about it on a dedicated game screen for each title.
Older game titles can be played entirely on the Revolution's IBM PowerPC CPU, while for newer games - presumably 3D ones from the N64 and Cube - the emulation process will also pull in the power of the new machine's ATI-designed graphics unit.
One interesting mention in the patent is that some titles may offer updates to the original content, such as the ability to play as new characters or to upgrade the graphics of the title - although obviously, such changes will require re-coding, whereas titles which are identical to the originals will not.
Although the Revolution Virtual Console is certainly the Nintendo product most likely to feature the technology described in this patent, it isn't the first time that Nintendo has included emulation and game selection options in its products - the most recent to do so being the Nintendo DS.
The patent filing document suggests that it was originally filed in February 2001 and was only approved in October, suggesting that Nintendo has been planning the Virtual Console functionality for its next-generation system since around the launch of the GameCube.

1up.com is running a piece talking to six professional game developers, where they discuss the possibilities and possible pitfalls of the Nintendo Revolution. From the article: "I don't think it will be difficult at all to make full length titles for the Revolution. First of all, Nintendo has hinted that they will provide an add-on for the controller that will mimic a "normal" controller, like the GameCube's Wavebird controller. Second, as long as the device is light, movement based input is not that tiresome. I have used a gyroscopic mouse for many years, and can successfully play many games with it. I would presume that games specifically tuned for the Revolution's controller will be easy to use for extended periods of time. As a bonus, gamers who play that long will end up with impressive looking forearms!
