A double shot of bad news for the Wii hacking set today -- not only do new Wiis appear to have a modchip-proof layer of epoxy around the DVD-ROM IC chips, Waninkoko has abandoned the Wii Backup-Loader project. The modchip news isn't all that surprising -- Ninty's been fighting a losing battle against chip devs for a while now, and gluing things down with epoxy is a logical solution -- but Waninkoko quitting is a bit of a shock, since we just caught wind of the Wii Backup-Loader a few days ago. Apparently he's not happy that it was leaked this morning, so he's dropping it.
Shame the wii homebrew scene has already been hurt with the piracy release

Specialist retailer GameStop has said that it is confident it can meet demand for the Nintendo Wii this Christmas.
Although the retailer stopped short of promising to stock the in-demand console on a daily basis, it did say that supply from Nintendo had increased, with less chance of consumers going away empty handed this year.
"It's been a unique ride for Nintendo to have the Wii going into a third year this November where the consumer may still be searching for it," said vice president of merchandising Bob McKenzie, reports MTV.com.
"Our look from Nintendo, though, is that it will be much, much better than it has been the last two years.
"I can’t say we will be in stock every day throughout the holiday season but I can tell you that the current flow we’ve seen coming from Nintendo on Wii hardware makes us very confident that we will meet the business model that we’ve got," he said.

Nintendo has confirmed Wii Music will launch in the US on October 20th.
You know, it's the game (OR IS IT A GAME or is it not or is it or DOES IT MATTER) where you get to play all manner of musical instruments using the Wii remote. Videos et cetera can be found on the gamepage.
So when's it out here? No idea. "We've made no announcement for Europe," a spokesperson told us. "This is just for the US." We're guessing it'll arrive in time for Christmas, though.

The Tom Clancy line of games are on their way to Wii, Ubisoft big man Yves Guillemot has confirmed.
The Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon series' have been some of the biggest games for the hardcore crowd in the past and current generation, but none have seen the light of day on Wii... yet.
"Tom Clancy will appear [on Wii] at one point," confirmed Guillemot, adding: "We need to make sure they [look good]."
"We have engines that were created for the next-generation consoles. We had to re-engineer a certain number of engines to be sure we could use the quality of the machine," he told Game Daily.
"Even without the [high-end] graphics, the experience can still be very interesting. ... To make sure we can create good enough products [on Wii] or products better than Nintendo's takes time. That's why you don't see many products, but you will see more and more in the future."
We'll be hoping for more than rehashed ports of old games, though (Price of Persia, we're looking at you). Which of the three would you like to see first?

Sonic the mutant hedgehog heads the Virtual Console billing today, with the Master System port now available. If only he had stayed on that side of the road.
He's followed by a pair of C64 gems, the first being Boulderdash. This game has had countless sequels and a few remakes along the way - and for good reason: the original formula of digging through caves collecting jewels while avoiding obstacles such as rocks and monsters remains potent.
Jumpman is steeped in even more historical importance, as it was the original name given to Mario in the arcade game Donkey Kong. Jump around platforms defusing bombs, simple. However, as Retro heads will know, this is Epyx's Jumpman, and absolutely nowt to do with Nintendo's platformer. Still. It's a good 'un.
Each of these Virtual Console morsels cost 500 Wii Points, which translates to GBP 3.50 / EUR 5.

... With "tasteful" minigames. Indeed, Nintendo Power has published the first comprehensive preview of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, according to details provided by NeoGAF poster botticus. The relayed information (in handy bullet-point format), describes Chinatown Wars as a "true GTA game," which is to say, a Mature-themed sandbox game concerned with all things criminal (just like the survey said). The DS technology limits gameplay to an isometric camera angle with cel-shaded visuals, though the load times, draw distance and frame rate are reportedly sound; and weather effects, along with a day and night cycle are in tact. The preview claims there are plenty of on-screen pedestrians and cars -- speaking of: there are multiple radio stations, mostly juiced with instrumental tunes. All in all, "800,000 lines of hand-optimized source code" are packed into the tiny cart.
What else? Chinatown Wars is said to return players to a sizeable portion of Liberty City (wild guess: Chinatown?), though the map has been altered from the console version. Missions also will be shortened and can be easily restarted upon failure. The D-pad is used for aiming, while the R-button activates auto-targeting; and there's "subtle" auto-steering built into the driving controls. The touchpad will be used for the aforementioned minigames, in addition to navigating the PDA-like UI, which includes email, contacts, the map, a music player, GPS, and stat-tracking (stats can be Wi-Fied to the Social Club). Now, how about some, uh ... scans? (Or better: screens! C'mon Rockstar, with this game scheduled to release in mere months, throw us a friggin' bone or two!)

We just never got the hang of that little blue robotic man, with his arm-blaster and his wall jumping and his awesome friends, and the Nyko Wing helped none at all: we managed to kill they guy about five seconds after picking up the controller. Still, it's a nice little chunk of plastic. It's much more natural in the hand than that funky Classic Controller, and seems rather high-quality for a Nyko product, but the d-pad is too mushy for our taste, and the whole assembly seems a tad too light. Either way, we're sticking with Mario.

Yes the release of waninkokos back uploader has apparently been leaked on the net and all those who enjoy pirating are happily doing whatever they do, sadly for real homebrewers this is a kick in the teeth. Even worse when respected tech sites like engadget etc post it with somewhat delight in the post, nice to see homebrewers from not just the wii scene condemn this, despite what some tards on lesser sites think this is bad for homebrew and homebrew sites, yeah Sony apparently havent got the brains or dont give a monkeys about the PSP apart from anyone selling consoles to us in europe (remember lik sang) but Nintendo are a different propostition but whatever happens and appareantly Waninkoko has abandoned the project this will im sure lead to repercussions, ill be interested to hear what Bushing, Marcan and others from Hackmii have to say on this subject.
Yes anyone with any knowledge knows that Wii Modchips have run backups for a long time (more importantly homebrew) but this release that doesnt need any extra hardware so its extremely damaging for nintendo, im not sure how easy to brick your console it will be because of the hack but frankly you take the risk.
I will post updates on this when they come in.

Nintendo has been hush-hush on any new, big Wii and Nintendo DS projects since July's Electronic Entertainment Expo, but if current rumors are to be believed, that radio silence won't be for much longer.
Word through various sources is that Nintendo is readying a press event in Japan for October 2nd or 3rd. While we have yet to receive confirmation of such event from our Nintendo of America sources, this rumor is strengthened by a two-day event scheduled by NOA for October 2nd and 3rd in the US.
No hints of what the company has planned have been revealed by NOA, but the timing of the Japanese event rumor ties in well with the Nintendo of America event. It's possible that a large-scope announcement or announcements will be made by Nintendo's Japanese branch and relayed to North American press during the scheduled event.
We'll have more as it breaks.

News/release from clone45
Announcing cellsDS: A free flexible, programmable grid-based music sequencer for the Nintendo DS. cellsDS is six sequencers in one, with each sequencer being controlled by a user definable Lua script. It is the peculiar anti-social stepchild of the Tenori-On and Monome.
Download it from the download page.
Features include:
* Dead simple user interface.
* Ability to create your own unique sequencer rules using the Lua programming language. CellsDS comes with a developer’s guide and example scripts to get you started.
* 175 sounds are included. With a little work, you can add your own sounds.
* Ability to customize the scale. (All you microtonal nerds will be pleased.)
* Coming soon… Wifi-Midi support.
There are some limitations to the Lua scripts that you can write due to performance issues. Please refer to the Developer’s Guide (included in the distribution) for more details. In short, cellsDS sequencers need to perform briskly - which might rule out things such as doing expensive cellular-automaton calculations.
A special thanks to all of the beta testers for their ideas and support. Please report any bugs to the forums.
Cheers,
- Bret

Just spotted this on French Nintendo site NintendoMax, not sure about the full details but heres the translated info:

To this he adds the correction of certain bugs
-- Unzip the file is in the "apps" if you use the chain "The Homebrew Channel" or in the folder "Homebrew" if you use the string "The Homebrew Launcher":
Emulator Megadrive: GenPlusGX

-- At the root of the SD or DVD, create a folder named "GenPlus" and in this one two subfolders, "ROMS" and "SAVES"
Emulator Master System & Game Gear: SMSPlusGX
For the string "Homebrew Channel"

Tantric has released a new version of the Game Boy Advance emulator for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Gamecube, heres whats new:
[[What's New 1.0.1]
* GBA games now run at full speed
* Menu improvements, with spiffy new background - thanks brakken!
* Fixed L/R buttons - they work now
Features
Wiimote, Nunchuk, Classic, and Gamecube controller support
Custom controller configurations
SD / USB support
SRAM & State saving
MEM2 ROM Storage for fast access
Auto frame skip for those core heavy games
Notes from the Developer
ZIP/DVD/SMB/GameCube Memory Card support are NOT implemented yet. The current build does NOT have adjustable frameskip. Frameskipping is set to 'AUTO' and cannot be changed. While speed is generally near perfect, sound tends to rebuffer as a result of frameskipping, so in-game music may suffer as a result, sounding like a CD-skipping. This does not occur with Gameboy Color games or original Gameboy games, which do not use the frameskip function.
Installation
If you are using the Homebrew Channel just copy the apps directory from the archive to the root of your SD card. If you are using another loader use the executables/vbagx_wii.dol.
ROMs & saves files should be stored in vbagx/roms and vbagx/saves on the root of your SD card or USB flash drive. You can copy the vbagx directory from the archive to your support drive. Your ROMs must be in ".gba" format.
Launch the emulator using your Loader.
