The recently-announced Nintendo DSi will not, as confirmed by a Nintendo spokesperson, replace the DS Lite in the U.S. Her reasoning? The DS Lite is in half of all Japanese households, but only a fifth of U.S. households. Apparently this kind of whirlwind success actually means there is "huge untapped potential" for the Lite, so Nintendo is going to let the two brothers sit side by side, at least for awhile.

Go on. Guess. The elderly? WRONG. Teenage girls? WRONG. Japan's biggest users of the DS are (according to this Nintendo-supplied chart, anyways) the same who were the biggest users of the GBA, and the Game Boy before that: boys. Specifically, 10-12 year-old boys. After that, though, it gets interesting. The most dominant demographics after the boys are women in their early 30s, followed by 10-12 year-old girls, followed by men in their early 30s. Not teens, not twenty-somethings, but people in their early 30s. Anyone in charge of putting the questions together for their Friday night pub trivia competition, these ones are on the house.

The DS Lite was a replacement for the DS. Came in, took over the place, you never saw the DS Phat again. So will the DSi do the same thing to the DS Lite? Not in the US, says Nintendo Smile Machine Cammie Dunaway:
Right now we’re still working through what the strategy's going to be here. But we think that there's huge untapped potential for the DS Lite. Because when you’ve got only one in every five households in the U.S., compared to one in every two in Japan, it says there's potential.
You’ve seen some of the work we’ve done this year with celebrities, that we're bringing a lot of new consumers in to the DS. So I think there’s opportunity for both of them to coexist for some period of time.
You know, I still have nothing but a DS Phat. And when I see statements like this, I feel like the world's just passing me by...

High Voltage chief operating officer Eric Nofsinger told MTV Multiplayer that The Conduit, due out March 2009, will support MotionPlus and WiiSpeak, and alludes to an already-planned sequel that will make greater use of those capabilities.
“We’re hooking it [MotionPlus] up,” Nofsinger told Multiplayer. “We want to support it. Probably for this version of the game there’s not going to be a whole ton of really extensive use of the Wii MotionPlus. For the sequel to the game, we definitely do want to incorporate more melee and things like that. We want to support it.”
Earlier this month, reports said High Voltage would push to start work on a sequel once they got a publisher for the first, and that an announcement of the publisher should be coming soon.

Despite revealing a new DS iteration -- the first since February 2006 -- Nintendo's shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange dropped 3.7 percent to 39,500 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Bloomberg notes that the stock has dropped 41 percent overall n 2008, compared to the past two years where it doubled in each of those. Comparatively, Sony's stock has dropped 51 percent this year.
While much can be attributed to the global economy at the moment, equity researcher Yoku Ihara said the DSi reveal "didn't exceed investors' expectations ... the stock market was so bearish that the news didn't hlep the shares gain." In other news, the console maker is still paying people to pay other people to count its ridiculous amounts of money.

Im sure by now you have heard of the new DS Console coming this year to Japan, but the loss of GBA Hardware inside and no GBA Port means a loss of all GBA Hombrew but the SD Slot possibly opens up the DS to Homebrew without the need for a flash cart.
So DSI is it good or bad for homebrew on the DS ?

Lazy1 has posted some more news of his port of Wolfenstein3D to the DS:
At least today I managed to get the music to work without cracking but that is in a separate application so I still need to move the code over.
I'm not sure about an inventory system yet, all I want to do is get the registered build out the door.
Releasing only shareware builds was a horrible move on my part.
The graphics for the sub screen are still open to suggestion though, I thought BJ kicking a nazi would be a nice idea but other pictures are welcome.
I only don't like the text since it looks like it was an advertisement or box image.
Unfortunately not many suitable images exist since you have to keep in mind aspect ratio, relevance and the fact that the first 40 pixels will be covered by the status bar.

With over 81 million units sold worldwide and sales as hot as ever in the West, you have to wonder whether or not everyone that wants a DS has already bought one.
But as Nintendo is finding out, there are still brand new customers that have yet to buy a DS, and according to one analyst, there are a decent amount of repeat DS buyers too.
"Almost 20 percent of Nintendo DS purchases that are being made today are to replace a current DS, either because the consumer broke it, lost it, or they were simply enticed by a new color scheme or the 'Lite' features," said Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich in a note to Edge, citing internal estimates.
He added that he expects Nintendo to experience a nice sales boost when the camera- and music player-equipped DSi arrives. "There is no doubt that the DSi will boost sales. In the past, we’ve seen a significant sales boost just from the release of a new Nintendo DS color scheme."
The DSi launches in Japan on November 1 this year, and Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime said it will arrive in the U.S. sometime after April 2009.
Analyst Michael Pachter with Wedbush Morgan also expects the new hardware to boost DS sales, but it's up to Nintendo to get the pricing right in the U.S. In Japan, it will retail for 18,900 yen ($179).
"I think that DSi will sell well at the DS price point [$129], far less well at the $179 price point," Pachter said.
"The upgrade is not a 'must have,' and is instead a 'nice to have.' My guess is that we'll see a discontinuation of the current DS Lite model by 2010, and the DSi will replace it entirely."
He also said he believes the DSi is a response to flagging Japanese sales of the DS.
Divnich added, "Japan is a different story [than the West,] as the PSP is considered a much bigger threat to the Nintendo empire than the PSP is in North America.
"These new features in the DSi will help give Nintendo an even bigger competitive edge over the Sony PSP."
With the DS effortlessly outselling the PSP month after month in the U.S., Nintendo of America isn't in a big rush to announce a release date for the region.
"...We need to keep in mind that the new DSi was created with the Japanese gaming culture in mind, not the Americans," said Divnich. "Heck, Nintendo could relinquish all support for the DS in North America and it would still outsell the PSP."
Developer's perspective
DS developers have also expressed interest in the DSi, one example being Jeremiah Slaczka, creative director and co-founder of 5th Cell, developer of the acclaimed title Lock's Quest and Drawn to Life.
"The new [feature] additions make sense," Slaczka told Edge. "[Nintendo's] trying to update the DS without making the previous versions obsolete and upsetting the existing DS owners. The new features are a step in the right direction."
He added that DSi downloadable content is a "very intriguing" prospect. "There could be potential to make some really fun stuff for it."
Slaczka said he "can't discuss" whether or not he got a sneak peak at the DSi before its unveiling, but when asked if he'd be buying one when it arrives, he replied, "Of course!"
