It wasn't too long ago that we were berating Nintendo for its seemingly silly patent application relating to a football-shaped soft appendage for the Wii Remote controllers. As it turns out, we may have underestimated the consumer interest in just such a product. While Ninty's application is still under review, CTA Digital has taken the opportunity to introduce its own "soft, realistic accessory" for the ballers that just can't get their Madden on without the feel of a rubbery pigskin substitute. It's ambidextrous, it comes with a wrist strap, and it has absolutely no right to exist in a society of right-thinking Homo sapiens. But it does. At least price and availability aren't yet public, so hopefully you'll have forgotten about this abomination by the time of release.

Puzzle fanatics better get their stylus ready, as Rooms: The Main Building is launches Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi on 21st May 2010. Packed with over 100 challenging and exciting puzzles, Rooms: The Main Building is designed to test the most ingenious minds.
Set in a dark and mysterious house called ‘Rooms Mansion’, the game plunges you into a virtual world based around 100 challenging sliding puzzles with a twist. In each room or level, you must think carefully and strategically to safely navigate your character to the room’s exit by sliding sections of the room, the same way as a slide puzzle. Your character can walk from tile to tile, but remember that only the tile that your character is standing in can be moved.
In this parallel world you will need to use an amazing array of unusual items and devices, including telephones that teleport you from one side of the room to the other and explosives, to break through brick walls or other obstacles. And watch out – some rooms are filled with water and will need to be pumped out !
You will be forced to use all of your ingenuity to escape each level, to be rewarded with four golden puzzle pieces that are required to secure your way home. Perfectionists will also be pleased to know that bonuses are awarded if the background image is arranged correctly like in a jigsaw puzzle once you’ve reached the exit! Don’t worry if you require help along the way, as the strange and intriguing character, Mr Book, will be your guide and will show you how to move rooms and use items effectively in your big escape.
So what are you waiting for? Make sure you grab a copy of Rooms: The Main Building when it launches across Europe for Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi on 21 May 2010.

As part of the build up to the launch of Sniper EliteTM on Nintendo Wii in Q2 this year, exclusive screens of the new bonus level, Flak Tower, have been revealed for the first time.
Taking place after the original 28 missions, Karl Fairburne has re-entered Berlin to assist in the destruction of the formidable ‘Flak Tower’; an impenetrable fortress armed with battery upon battery of anti-aircraft cannons which is decimating the Allied airborne assault. His mission: get through to one of the most heavily guarded facilities in Berlin without being seen and destroy it from within!
Peter Rezon, CEO of Reef Entertainment said; ‘This represents the final full-on battle the player will undertake in-game. You’ll need to be a very good sniper to get through this mission!”
Massi Di Monda, CEO of Raylight said; “By the time the player reaches this level we expect them to be fully versed in handling the controllers, especially the Wii Zapper rifle add-on, so their sniping skills will be well honed and they’ll have to be for this level! The pace of the game to this point has been up and down – full-on action coupled with slower sniping /stealth style gameplay, so we’ve ramped up the tension and action to make ‘Flak Tower’ a truly explosive and fitting end to one of the best sniping games around!”
Sniper EliteTM on Nintendo WiiTM will be launched Q2 2010.

[Matthias Hullin], the creator of the snega2usb let us know that its name has been changed to the Retrode. We watched this device go through the development cycle and learn to read SNES and Sega Genesis cartridges via a USB connection. Now it’s seeing some hacking to extend those capabilities. [Jon] managed to rig the Retrode up to read Virtual Boy cartridges. The Virtual Boy was a Nintendo console from the mid ’90s that used two different screens in a glasses format to produce a 3D gaming experience. Now that the cartridges can be easily dumped you have a chance to replay the titles using an emulator.

A few weeks back I attended Nintendo's media summit wherein they showed off all their upcoming releases for the first half of 2010. Considering it was such a huge push with "Wii Sports Resort," I was surprised by the absolute dearth of Wii MotionPlus games in the line-up. In the first half of the year there will only be one: "FlingSmash." Last week I caught up with Reggie Fils-Aimé, President of Nintendo of America, and asked where all the first party Wii MotionPlus games are.
"There's tremendous support for Wii MotionPlus. First, what it would highlight is that 'Wii Sports Resort' continues to sell exceptionally well. In addition to that you're seeing some fantastic third party support. 'Red Steel 2'...about to come out. And from a first party perspective we showed 'Fling Smash.' There are more titles that are coming, it continues to be a core part of what we do."
While I hear him say "tremendous support," I'm not convinced. It seems like there was a big priority in 2009 with "Resort" and "Wii Fit 2," but since then it's been extremely quiet.
There are three major franchise games that spring to mind ("New Super Mario Bros. Wii," "Super Mario Galaxy 2" and "Metroid: Other M") that don't use MotionPlus at all, and while it's been hinted that the next "Zelda" will feature it, that's likely a 2011 release.
Regarding those non-MotionPlus franchise games, though, Reggie made a point of saying that Nintendo doesn't like to force control schemes upon their developers:
"But I guess what's unique with Nintendo is we don't force our developers to stick to a particular type of control scheme, and you've seen that. Everything from the new 'Metroid' title to be single remote driven to 'Fling Smash' utilizing the Wii MotionPlus. So it's all about what's right for the game."
It'll be interesting to see whether Nintendo ramps up MotionPlus software development in time for the release of Natal and PlayStation Move later this year.

Oh Miyamoto, you sly dog. You climb up on stage as we hold our breaths, and then ramble on and on until we drop to the ground gasping for air and wake up in the ICU. And as you saunter off the stage with your award in hand, all of our lung-straining effort appears to have been for naught. No megatons. Not even a tiny white flag that says “boom” on it.
As it turns out, though, good things come in small packages – not rambling speeches. One tiny tweet later, Pikmin 3’s back on the map.
“ONM is at the BAFTAs! Miyamoto just told us Pikmin 3 development is ‘well under way,’” tweeted – who else? – ONM.
That sound you just heard? That was the Internet. It’s gone now. Replaced by a smoldering crater. Oh, but 4chan’s still around. Why? Well, as it turns out, cockroaches really do survive nuclear explosions!

Pate has today posted this WIP News of his Dos Emulator for DS on his Site:
This weekend I worked on the various unsupported DOS interrupts that I have noticed on the debug logs I have been receiving. So far I have added about half of the dozen or so unsupported DOS features on my TODO list. During the past week I debugged some games that behaved strangely in DSx86, and found and fixed several bugs in the code while doing this:
Moraff's World just quit back to DOS immediately when trying to run it in DSx86. This was caused by a bug in my memory reallocation code. It should have returned the largest available block if a program requested more memory than was available, but it returned the requested amount. Fixing that problem allowed the game to start.
Simcity demo quit with "Division by zero" when it tried to load the San Francisco map. This was caused by a bug in my unsigned div opcode handling. I used the ARM 32bit/32bit division feature, which gave a wrong result if the numerator was >= 0x80000000. I switched to using int64/int32 division for this situation, and that fixed the problem in Simcity demo.
Ultima 3 seemed to hang at the start. I added a new debug feature into DSx86 where it shows all the called interrupt functions when running with the debugger screen visible. Here I noticed that it tries to open a file using the (nearly obsolete) DOS 1.0 File Control Block functions. I had coded that function to simply return error, but Ultima 3 did not expect an error return. I added the basic FCB functions (open, close, read, write) using FreeDOS sources as a reference. FreeDOS handles those functions by wrapping the normal DOS file functions, so I did it similarly. This means that calling these FCB DOS functions in DSx86 is rather inefficient, as they are wrappers over the normal DOS file functions, which in turn are wrappers over the C standard stdio file functions, which are wrappers over the functions provided by LibFAT. Anyways, after adding these functions Ultima 3 seems to run properly.
Electranoid crashed DSx86 completely. I still don't know what exactly it did that caused a total crash (where NO$GBA shows a popup "The rom-image has crashed"), however I noticed that it used the DOS internal SYSVARS - GET LIST OF LISTS call that returns a pointer to DOS internal data area (but which did nothing in DSx86). The game tried to use the pointer to the start of the allocated memory block chain, and went to random locations in the memory when this pointer did not contain any valid data. I added support for this call (though many of the other pointers are still marked as invalid) and the game stopped crashing, but then it reported "Critical error - Out of EMM memory." I tried adding the amount of EMS memory DSx86 reports, which just changed the error message to "Critical error - No Microsoft compatible mouse found", so I stopped working on this game for now.
Norton Sysinfo used to work on my specially hacked version of DSx86 back in November of last year, before even the 0.01 alpha version release. I am now trying to make it work in the proper version. The first problem was that it stopped with "Division by zero" when it tried to measure the CPU speed, and I noticed that my improved timer code (which I coded for version 0.01) did not handle the timing method that Sysinfo used properly. I fixed that, but now it crashes DSx86, and I am currently debugging the cause for that. It is not all that surprising that it crashes, as it uses quite an extensive array of tests for various hardware and software on the PC. A good testbench for DSx86 compatibility, in other words. :-)
I haven't started on the mouse emulation yet, and I doubt I'll add that for the next version. My first priority is to get more games running properly and without weird crashes. Perhaps I'll work on the mouse emulation on my Easter vacation. For now, I'll continue adding the missing DOS features and fixing other problems in the debug logs I have received.

c64-network.org v2 released by Simon Kagstrom
c64-network.org is a Commodore 64 emulator written by Christian Bauer (http://frodo.cebix.net). It was ported to the Wii by Simon Kagstrom, and many C64 games are fully playable on the Wii with it. So go ahead and beat your friends in International Karate, Boulder Dash or Bomb Jack. This version is not the same as Troy Davis implementation, but Troys work is available in a branch in the subversion tree.
The emulator works best in 480i mode. It runs perfectly fine in 576i mode as well, but does not utilize the full resolution. This is an SDL issue, and will not be fixed until SDL-Port supports it. Sound support is slightly buggy, but usable. The emulation itself is not perfect, so not all games will run under Frodo. Unfortunately, I cannot do very much about this since I haven't written the emulator - just ported it. If you have multiple versions of a game, try each of them as often at least one will work.
v2 (C64-network.org)
Various small fixes here and there
Fix sound when paused
Fix nunchuk/classic controller joystick
All fixes in the v1-rcs

Shigeru Miyamoto, who has had a hand in some of Nintendo's most popular titles, recently offered that he is working hard to turn Nintendo's DS line of handheld gaming machines into tools for schools. The DS already has a nice line of educational software titles that help users learn, and he thinks that this could really be a huge benefit to schools looking for alternative ways to educate students of a new generation.
