The date code above is accurate but sadly the Japanese-English DS homebrew divide is back in full swing and we all missed it. Anyway MeRAMAN is a fairly prolific homebrew developer and you may have seen his now C&Ded Tetris Grand Masters port (one of the top versions of tetris period let alone on the DS), his midi player/keyboard simulator (also nice homebrew libraries for the same) or his versions of KoiKoi and Shisensho (more or less mahjong solitaire). Back on topic this is the initial release of a homebrew version of Picross and a fairly nice implementation of it, it lacks touch screen in the game proper but makes up for it with a very nice puzzle maker, interesting options and online support. Speaking of online you will benefit from (read pretty much require) having online in the initial setup of it. Play might be slightly different to the versions of Picross that appeared in English as it opts for the no error messages approach to play. Coloured puzzles are present though and it has a top flight puzzle maker.

Publisher XSEED isn't looking at bringing out a Pandora's Tower special edition when the game finally reaches North America this spring. The Wii JRPG did get one in Europe, which came with an art book and steel case, but XSEED tweeted that this time around it had to "go a bit more streamlined." That streamlining may still incorporate a reversible cover and manual art, but we'll have to wait and see.
Pandora's Tower is the last of the Operation Rainfall Wii JRPGs to get North American localization, and is now available for pre-order at GameStop, priced $39.99. Its release represents a comprehensive victory for the 2011 grassroots campaign, and we suspect those involved are just happy to see it over here, special edition or no.

We like this project for its sheer simplicity. After all, recreating the hardware in the controller for a modern gaming system is next to impossible. [Guillermo A. Amaral B.] had a bunch of parts sitting around and decided to try his hand at recreating an original Nintendo Entertainment System controller.
If you’re not familiar with the electronics inside this brand of retro gaming hardware you might be surprised to find that there’s barely any logic hardware at all. The chip in the middle of the board is a 4021 parallel to serial shift register. It connects to the buttons and uses the clock signal coming through the cable to pulse out the button states over a serial wire. So all that [Guillermo] did was lay out the chip with connects for each button.
In the image above his thumb is obscuring the 5-way switch used for directional control and select (center click). The yellow and green buttons serve as A and B, with the start button on the opposite side of the board due to a mistake in his board layout. He does have some future plans for this. He’s working on a Raspberry Pi project that will monitor and record the controller serial data so that you can play it back. It sounds like a player piano for video games.
Want to see a really small version of this? The same hardware in a smaller package was put together a couple of months ago to build the world’s smallest NES controller.

The world gets its first look at the new Wii U and 3DS Super Smash Bros. games at this year's E3. In this week's Direct broadcast, Nintendo announced series designer Masahiro Sakurai is to debut screens of the new entries at the LA expo in June. Sakurai then clarified the news on Twitter, hinting there'll be more of the inter-icon fracases than just screens.
Sakurai tweeted he'd like to show both the Wii U and 3DS versions, and that, while "other games" have had visuals shown, he'd like to "release something better." It would be a bit surprising to only see screens, given Melee and Brawlboth were first showcased with trailers at E3 expos.
Nintendo also announced new Wii U Mario Kart and 3D Mario games are in development, and are to also be shown off at E3 2013. In their case there'll also be playable demos at the expo, but at this stage that seems a pipe dream for the new SSB games.

The most recent information about the Western release date for Game & Warioputs it somewhere in the first half of 2013. For Japan, however, the minigame (but not microgame!) collection has a firm release date. Nintendo of Japan is aiming its nose-and-mustache-shaped bow and targeting March 28.
There's still a lot we don't know about the Intelligent Systems-developed collection, so soon before its debut – like what's in it. So far, we've seen only four minigames: Fruit, Arrow, Shutter, and Ski.

Nintendo appears to be using the inferior 50Hz mode for games on the European Wii U Virtual Console, whereas other regions can use the 60Hz mode. You lot noticed the issue after downloading NES title Balloon Fight, which is available for 30p for 30 days as part of the service's special introductory offer.PAL 50Hz versions traditionally run slower (due to old European TVs having a slower refresh rate), with compressed graphics and borders. A video comparing the difference in speed between 50Hz and 60Hz is below.Nintendo of Europe used the 50Hz standard for games on the Wii's Virtual Console, too. This suggests that the Wii U versions come from the same code, although you'll have re-download a new version of each game to play it on the GamePad. These new versions will individually be made available over some time, Nintendo has said. Each will also incur a small additional cost. The issue is particularly surprising because, more recently, all NES games on the 3DS Virtual Console (including Balloon Fight) were 60Hz regardless of region.Gamers have reacted angrily to all this, flooding Wii U social network Miiverse with complaints."Good game, steal at 30p, but this has the PAL slowdown, so slower music and gameplay," one person said."This is the 21st century. Again with that 50Hz nonsense? Why must Europe still get the worst version?" another user queried.

YouTube user has reimagined popular TV series Downton Abbey as a 16-bit Super Nintendo game in the brilliant fake trailer below.
While sadly not playable, Kiley should be commended for not only composing a totally catchy chiptunes cover of the show's theme, but finding a way to convert the drudgery of service in a posh English estate into tried-and-true game mechanics in a way that totally fits the fiction. As a new footman, you'll have to collect missing cigars for a dinner party, help Mary Crawley spy on Mrs. Patmore - whom she suspects is trying to poison Matthew with her cooking - and aid Anna in fluffing pillows so you can read a letter from her jailed husband. Even setting a table recalls the climax of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where you have to deduce which of several spoons is meant for bouillon. All the while the comforting, self-assured Mr. Carson saves your progress, as every good butler should.

Research firm Screen Digest has suggested that Nintendo is behind the curve in a number of fields when it comes to next generation consoles.
While Wii U was first to market, senior principal analyst and head of games at Screen Digest Piers Harding-Rolls expects the next generation Xbox to launch this year, with PS4 following in 2014, and believes Nintendo will be playing catch up in a number of areas. He told Edge: "We believe Nintendo looks increasingly isolated in the market. It does not have the luxury of a wider device ecosystem play such as Sony, Apple or Microsoft and it is behind the curve in its online and cloud content strategies.
"We would like to see Nintendo be more aggressive in 'hinging' off its devices using its online platform - Nintendo Network - onto third-party devices as Microsoft is starting to do with Xbox Smartglass and Sony is doing with PlayStation Mobile.
"Neither of these solutions is significant at present but it does show that these companies are willing to engage users on the most popular third-party connected devices to drive relevance for their own products."
Harding-Rolls also expects Microsoft and Sony to more widely adopt subsidised pricing models for new hardware. "This will keep the platforms relatively competitive," he said. "Nintendo will be late to adopt a subsidised pricing strategy but could be forced to examine it if Microsoft and Sony push forward with it."

Nintendo will perform 'emergency maintenance' to its online services on January 28 and 29.
The maintenance will affect a number of Nintendo Network functions including the online Wii U and 3DS eShops, the DSi Shop and Wii Shopping Channel. The outages will also affect network services for Pokemon Black and White 1 and 2, and ranking/matchmaking functionality for Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper on Wii U. The full maintenance schedule is here.
"During the emergency maintenance, parts of the affected services may be intermittently unavailable," said Nintendo.
The nature of the 'emergency' went undisclosed.

When Battroborg hit shelves in Japan last June we were, admittedly, a tad jealous. Where were our tiny, motion controlled boxing bots? Well, if you can be just a bit more patient, the vicious little toys should be landing stateside in time for Christmas. Tomy was nice enough to bring them by our office for a little preview and to help us work out some intra-office tension. So, beyond the obvious Wii and Rock'em Sock'em Robots comparisons, what's it like piloting these puny pugilists through battle?
