This year’s release of Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros will sell Wii U hardware and help the machine hit its 3.6m unit sales target.
That’s according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who has told investors that the two titles are “the pillars of our entire marketing strategy for this year” and that “they will encourage those who do not own Wii U hardware to purchase it”.
That’s despite the fact that the critically applauded Super Mario 3D World was unable to create any significant sales uplift for the console.
Added Iwata: “As to whether our philosophy has changed or not, the basic idea that consumers reluctantly purchase hardware only because they want to play with appealing software remains unchanged.”
Iwata also confirmed that there aren’t currently enough Wii U units in the channel to meet its sales goals, but the ongoing losses the company incurs during manufacturing have already been factored in to the company’s partners.
“In order to sell 3.6m units, we have to produce some more hardware units on top of our current hardware inventory,” he added.
“However, since the loss arising due to the hardware production costs being higher than our trade price was taken into account in the previous fiscal year, you could assume that there will be almost no loss this fiscal year for the sales of the 3.6m hardware units.”
There will also be some more games announced for the console at E3.
“We are going to talk about other Wii U titles at E3 in Los Angeles in June,” he added. “Also, our internal software development teams directed by Shigeru Miyamoto are committed to developing several titles that focus on offering unique experiences only made possible with the Wii U GamePad in order for a large number of people to understand the Wii U GamePad’s significance.
“The titles we are preparing to show you at E3 vary from being nearly complete to still in the early phases of development but with the core of its appeal noticeable. Therefore, our strategy of focusing on software has not changed.”

Nintendo UK's online store is spreading its P-wings by introducing merchandise to its virtual shelves. The new line of products include clothes, figurines, console accessories and game guides, and includes items previously limited to outside of Europe.
There's some fun stuff in there, including piranha plant socks, a stylish Zelda hoodie, and our favorite, the goomba cap. The prices are fairly standard for official merchandise, but if you've got pounds in your pocket, you might be interested in the exclusive figurines. So far it's limited to Zelda and Metroid, and for £300 you can take Ganondorf home for tea.

When Nintendo designed Tomodachi Life, a bizarre life-sim that puts the company's Mii avatars in an exaggerated parody of reality, it probably didn't expect to provoke a marriage equality campaign. Community cries for 'Miiquality' petitioned Nintendo to add same-sex relationships to the title, but the company's initial response was sterile and dismissive. "Tomodachi Life was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game," Nintendo said. "We were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary." Intentional or not, the lack of same-sex relationships caused a stir. Now, Nintendo is apologizing officially.

Square Enix said on Monday that it is considering releasingDragon Quest X outside of Japan.
The subscription-based MMO launched in Japan on Wii in August 2012, on Wii U in March 2013, on PC last September, and on smartphones via cloud streaming in December.
The game has sold over one million copies and has around 300,000 daily active players in Japan, producer Yosuke Saito said last month.
Outlining growth plans in its annual financial report on Monday, Square Enix also said that it is planning the launch of unspecified "large-scale online titles developed by western studios" beginning during the current business year ending in March 2015.
Final Fantasy Agito will be released "soon" on iOS and Android devices, while Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will launch in mainland China this summer.
As previously forecast, Square Enix announced on Monday that it had posted net sales of 155 billion yen (£901.5m/$1.52b) and net income of 6.6 billion yen (£38.4m/$64.8m) for the business year ended March 31 2014.
The Japanese publisher raised its sales and profit guidance in early May, citing "strong" sales of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, an "encouraging start" for mobile game Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light, and "favourable sales" of both Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD and Tomb Raider Definitive Edition.
Square Enix sold 17.23 million games in the most recent financial year: 8.2 million in North America, 4.6 million in Japan and 4.08 million in Europe. It expects to sell 12 million games in the current business year, with a more even spread across the three key territories.
The company has also forecast annual net sales of 140-150 billion yen (£814m - £871m / $1.37b - $1.47b) and net income of 3.5-6.5 billion yen (£20.3m - £37.7m / $34.3m - $63.8m).

Nintendo of America has released a TV commercial for its upcoming 3DS game Tomodachi Life.
The life sim will be released in Europe and the US on June 6. In it, players become guardians of their Mii characters, ensuring they've got enough friends, food and clothing, and that they're satisfied.
As in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, players can also take screenshots of what their Miis gets up to and share them online.
Over the weekend, Nintendo issued an official apology following the uproar over the lack of a same-sex marriage option in Tomodachi Life.
Tomodachi Life is the first game in the series to be released in western territories. The 2009 DS original sold 3.76 million copies in Japan and its April 2013 3DS sequel has moved 1.82 million copies to date.

One of the best things about Super Mario 3D World is its soundtrack.
What's that? You don't believe me? Why, you insolent sod, have a listen to this and tell me it isn't like something straight out of classic Disney films.
That's what I thought. Now, what would you say if I told you that it was possible to get this track, as well as a further 76 tracks of similar orchestral goodness, all on two compact discs?
No, my friend, this isn't sorcery, it's... well, it's just a soundtrack CD. Chill out.
The point is, Super Mario 3D World has a brilliant musical score, and now you can get your hands on a two-disc CD version of it through the UK Club Nintendo store.
The only problem is that it'll set you back 3000 Stars, which means you'll have had to have registered a ton of Wii, DS, 3DS and Wii U games by now to be able to 'afford' it.
For most people, then, your best bet will be to keep an eye on eBay in case some cheeky beggar's bought it with their stars with the sole purpose of selling it on for some nifty dollar dollar.
By God though, it'd be worth it. Even the cover's amazing:

Nintendo has announced a UK release for Pokémon Art Academy, the latest version of its handheld illustrate-'em-up series.Due for release on 3DS this 4th July, the game contains Pokémon-themed variants of its usual art lessons, so you can learn how to paint Pikachu, trace Torchic and airbrush your Abra. It's the first we've heard of a Western launch for the game, which was previously announced for a June arrival in Japan. But a release here isn't too surprising - Nintendo is currently pushing Pokémon after the success of Pokémon X and Y last year. This autumn will see the launch of 3DS re-makes Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the first footage of which was revealed over the weekend.

Tomodachi Life, an upcoming 3DS game that places the Miis of a player and their acquaintances in various scenarios, has drawn criticism from fans over its lack of support for same-sex relationships. Nintendo of America recentlyexplained that the company "never intended to make any form of social commentary" with Tomodachi Life, but the bungling response only upset people further. With fans amassing awareness for the issue through theMiiquality hashtag, Nintendo has now issued an apology for "disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships."
"Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to change this game's design, and such a significant development change can't be accomplished with a post-ship patch," the statement continues. "We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone. We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players."
It's nice of Nintendo of America to play damage control, but since the response is from the company's American division, we wonder if the strive to be more inclusive would only be evident in Western versions of the next game. Of course, that's assuming that another Tomodachi game will be made in the first place.

The first chapter of Moon Chronicles, Renegade Kid's episodic, visually-upgraded remake of its 2009 first-person shooter for the DS, will make contact with the 3DS eShop on May 15. The game's official Twitter account transmittedthe release date's signal this week, reminding us that the first portion of the 3D-enabled Moon Chronicles will cost $8.99.
If the initial chapter's price is a bit steep to you, know that three additional DLC chapters will be offered for $1.99 apiece. Each episode carries four chapters of the original game, with the base $8.99 offering also including six VR missions. If the incoming content is received well enough, Renegade Kid has plans to offer a second season's worth sometime next year, with all-new content taking place after the original game's story.

Sonic: Lost World sales dried up in 2014; as of March 31, the Wii U and 3DS game shipped 710,000 units total since its launch in October 2013. The figures come from Sega Sammy's fiscal year report, and the company doesn't note if they include download sales or not.
Total War: Rome 2 was the company's best-performing game in the fiscal year, shifting 1.13 million copies by the end of March 2014. Football Manager 2014placed second at 790,000 units, with Company of Heroes 2 not too far behind with 680,000 shipments. In roughly its first month on sale in Japan, PS4 and PS3 entry Yakuza Restoration shipped 390,000 units.
Sega Sammy's consumer business posted year-on-year decline for packaged software, with the company blaming low sales on the "harsh market environment." The division shipped 8.73 million packaged games across April 2013 to March 2014, down 18 percent from the previous fiscal year. Sega Sammy expects that figure to rise substantially to 12.78 million for the fiscal year ending March 2015.

Nintendo's surprise reveal of Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Pokemon Omega Ruby was a bit vague to say the least. The company described the 3DS games as a "fresh take" on Game Boy Advance entries Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire, while a brief press release mentioned things like a "new adventure" and a "spectacular new world."
So, just what are these games? Step in Satoru Iwata to clear things up, or at least a little bit. In today's financial briefing, the Nintendo president described the games as "full remakes," which at least removes some of the confusion if not a lot of it.
Otherwise, details are as sparse as they were yesterday. At least we do know Nintendo's releasing both games worldwide in November this year.

[Andrew] is developing a game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Emulators are great for this, but [Andy] loves running on the real iron. To help, he’s created a dual port RAM interface for his NES. As the name implies, a dual port RAM is a memory with two separate data and address buses. The Cypress Semiconductor CY7C136 [Andy] used also includes arbitration logic to ensure that both ports don’t attempt to access the same memory cell and cause data corruption. In [Andy's] case the NES was on one side, oblivious to the new hardware. On the other side of the dual port RAM, [Andy] installed an ATmega164 running his own custom firmware.
The new hardware gives [Andy] a live view of what’s going on in the NES’s memory. He added a live memory view/edit screen similar to the FCEUX emulator. The window runs on a PC while the game itself is running on an NES. [Andy] was even able to add rudimentary break and step features by connecting his circuit to the Non Maskable Interrupt (NMI) line of the NES. By holding the NMI asserted, the ATmega can essentially freeze the game in progress.
[Andy] has even used his circuit to teach the NES some new tricks. By reading the timer and score memory locations on Ice Hockey, he was able to create a scoreboard and goal light. Similar techniques were used to give Contra a muzzle flash light which puts Ambilightsystems to shame.
We don’t know what [Andy] is planning next, but we hope it’s a source release so we can start hacking some some games ourselves!

We hope you liked Skylanders, because Nintendo is apparently setting up its own range of toys to accidentally tread under foot. At the company's financial briefing this morning, it outlined a Mario figure that could be used across multiple titles, somehow tying into game saves too. It's not the first for Nintendo's console: Pokemon Scramble connected NFC toys to the Wii U last year. Interestingly, Nintendo had apparently declined exclusivity on Activision's lucrative Skylanders series.
These physical characters and games, grouped together as NFP (which apparently stands for both NFC Featured Platform and Nintendo Figurine Platform), will debut at this year's E3, alongside a new IR reader for 3DSes that will make the toys compatible across both the handheld and the Wii. With 3DS sales currently totaling 43 million, and the Wii U struggling to top six million, it's probably a wise business decision.

Nintendo has no problem with its Mii-based Tomodachi Life being off-kilter, but when it comes to the handheld game's same-sex avatars being able to wed, well, that's a different story. Tomodachi Life is all about the interactions and relationships between an island full of Miis, and as two characters' dating progresses they'll eventually walk down the aisle, unlock a bigger home and have children -- so long as one is, say, Mario and the other is Princess Peach. A fan, urging the internet to use the "#Miiquality" hashtag across social media when requesting that the company change its stance. Nintendo's response? It told the Associated Press that it "never intended to make any form of social commentary" with the 3DS game's launch."The relationship options in the game represent a playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation. We hope that all of our fans will see that 'Tomodachi Life' was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game, and that we were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary."

Nintendo came close to surpassing $250 million sales in downloadable games and content in the past twelve months.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told investors that a possible fourth consecutive annual loss would be unacceptableDuring the financial period between April 2013 and March 2014, the platform holder made about 24 billion Yen ($235 million) from digital content.
Chief executive Satoru Iwata said this was due to a high proportion of customers accessing internet services through their 3DS and Wii U systems.
In an investor meeting on Thursday, in which Iwata apologised for Nintendo's third consecutive net loss (this time to the tune of $229 million), the executive explained how the digital side of the business was punching above its weight.
The graph below was presented to investors, showing a significant uptake in digital sales cross the past three years.
"This graph shows the transitions of download sales until the last fiscal year. As shown here, download sales had slowed down three-to-four years ago, but they have tripled in the last two years," Iwata explained.
He added that allowing people to download major packaged games was also a contributing factor to the upsurge in digital cash.
Iwata believes that the digital sales, considering Wii U is performing well below expectations, suggests future opportunities will be significant.
"When we consider that we have made this progress while Nintendo's overall business has not generally been expanding, I think further developing this business will be imperative for us to adapt to the changes in the business environment," he said.
Nintendo expects to sell less than 4 million Wii U consoles over the current financial year.
The Kyoto based corporation believes that 20 million Wii U games will be sold this year, a slight increase on the 19 million achieved in the prior financial term.
In terms of 3DS sales, Nintendo expects 12 million units to be sold worldwide this financial year. That would virtually match its 2013/14 financial year sales, in which the platform became a best-seller in numerous territories for an extended period, although it still failed to meet internal expectations.

Nintendo reportedly plans to launch new console platforms in emerging markets beginning next year.
President Satoru Iwata told Bloomberg: "We want to make new things, with new thinking rather than a cheaper version of what we currently have. The product and price balance must be made from scratch."
Microsoft recently announced plans to launch Xbox One in China this September after the country lifted a 14-year ban on the sale of foreign game consoles. Meanwhile, the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia division has opened a newChina Strategy Department.
While Iwata reiterated Nintendo's reluctance to enter the smartphone market on Thursday, he did announce a new near field communication product line called Nintendo Figurine Platform, which is designed to address weaker than expected Wii U and 3DS sales.
"We need to start a new business that will someday become one of our core activities," he said. "What is especially unique about NFP is that it is not classed as an accessory product of a certain software title but as a platform itself."
Nintendo will announce a number of NFP compatible games at E3 in June, and plans to release character figurines with built-in NFC functionality beginning this Christmas season. NFP will be compatible with Wii U software from the end of 2014, and with 3DS software from next year.
