You can't just make Pikachu your World Cup mascot and not put him on a bunch of merchandise. Adidas is well aware, as evidenced by the above glimpse (provided by Inside Games) at replica jerseys, which fans can purchase for 7,400 yen ($73) to support Japan's team in the coming tournament.
According to Siliconera's translation, the visual concept for the jersey relates to Adidas Japan's Enjin (Ring) Project, the name of which references the circle made by players huddling together. If you can imagine a team wearing this, hunched over with arms above each other's backs ... yup, the red stroke across the shoulderblades would form a ring. It's almost like somebody planned this or something!
If you're still lost on how Pikachu relates to soccer in the first place, Siliconera adds that the choice is meant to get more Japanese fans invested in their World Cup team, with an emphasis on drawing in younger fans. That makes sense - what appeals to younger kids more than Pikachu? More than candy and recess, anyway.

Nintendo has unleashed the official website for Mario Kart TV, a web-based replay hub for Mario Kart 8, which launched today. Players can watch and share races uploaded from the Mario Kart 8's TV mode at MarioKart.tv.
The site allows players to filter content based on character, courses and race types. Find an especially devious red shell-laden match? Replays can be shared via Facebook and Twitter.
Connecting to the site with a console's Nintendo Network account allows players to view their own uploaded content. While no mobile app was released for the replay viewer, GameSpot reports the site's videos are optimized for smartphones and tablets.
In the Joystiq review, weekend editor Thomas Schulenberg said Mario Kart 8 "is a solid extra lap on a series with a great foundation." As part of a promotion for the game's release, Nintendo is offering players a free digital copy from a selection of Wii U titles for a limited time.

A free update for Pikmin 3 has added a new way to command your adorable alien allies. The update adds stylus control via the Nintendo Wii U's GamePad touch screen, Nintendo Everything reports. Control options can be adjusted in the game's main menu.
With the update, Pikmin 3 now supports four control options, including the added touch interface: traditional GamePad buttons, Wii U Pro Controller, and the Wii's classic Remote and Nunchuk combo.
The change comes to Pikmin 3 in time for the game to be offered as a selection in Nintendo's Mario Kart 8 promotion, which offers players a free downloadable title from a limited list for purchasing Nintendo's hit racing title.

Earlier this week, we learned that the ultra, super, majorly difficult platformerAban Hawkins and the 1,001 Spikes - abbreviated to just 1,001 Spikes if you're feeling saucy - will be coming to PS4, PS Vita and Steam on June 3. Yesterday, a Nicalis representative sent Joystiq an addendum to that announcement: 1,001 Spikes will also be launching on the Wii U and 3DS on June 3. Hold your cheers of joy though, because there's a catch.
Apparently, the publisher discovered some last-minute issues with the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game, and were forced to choose between delaying the game or sending it out, bugs and all. Interestingly, they opted for the latter. "Our fans want to play the game and we don't plan to leave our Nintendo fans behind on a game they've been patiently waiting for," the representative informed Joystiq.
While a buggy game is never pleasant to experience, there is some good news for potential buyers. A special promotion will grant customers who already own a Nicalis game (VVVVVV, NightSky, Cave Story, Ikachan or Grinsia) on their 3DS a discount for 1,001 Spikes. These customers can purchase the 3DS version for $9.99 - 33 percent off the usual price of $14.99. And as for those bugs:
"Nintendo has assured us that an update could be issued within a couple of days of release to knock out those bugs," the Nicalis rep said. Hopefully doing so will be easier than navigating the game's insane levels.

Having already conquered the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with its inexplicably compelling blend of heavy machinery and virtual backbreaking drudgery, Farming Simulator 14 is now coming to the Vita and 3DS handhelds.
The official Farming Simulator Twitter account broke the news earlier today, though it failed to mention exactly when in June these games might appear. However, the official Farming Simulator 14website links to Amazon listings for both the 3DS and Vita games which claim they will appear on June 24.
Scant information is available on any new features these games will introduce to the classic Farm Simulator formula, though fans should be aware that neither the 3DS nor Vita games will have access to the plethora of mods and community-created content that have made the PC incarnation of Farming Simulator 14 such an engrossing, unexpected hit.

No, it isn't the end of the world and frogs are not falling from the skies. That really is a real-life car in Mario Kart 8. As part of a surreal collaboration between Nintendo and Mercedes Benz, Japanese players are getting the Mercedes GLA as a DLC kart this summer. The DLC is reportedly free, and there's also word of a GLA tournament in the fall.
The news is only for Japan so far and there's no confirmation we can expect the DLC in the West. A Nintendo UK spokesperson told Joystiq, "The announcement this time was made by Mercedes-Benz Japan regarding their collaboration in Japan with Nintendo Co. Limited."
However: "As for the information relating to the distribution of the GLA kart forMario Kart 8 outside Japan, we will be able to announce in the near future." So let's wait and see.
That kart is gonna take some getting used to, but the commercial Mercedes is using Mario in to promote the GLA may be even weirder. Check it out below the break.

Let's face it, if you're a Wii U owner you're well aware Mario Kart 8 is out tomorrow. It's the series' first HD entry, when you register it online you get acode for a free game, and you know this. But, maybe for some foul reason you're less Mario Kart 8 and more Mario Kart Hate. Luckily for you, you fiend, there are other games out on Nintendo systems this week.
First off there's Ittle Dew, a familiarly heroic adventure that's making a far too appropriate jump to Wii U. The influx of GBA games for Wii U continues withKlonoa: Empire of Dreams, and retro fans can also grab Mega Man Xtreme 2 on 3DS.
Sales-wise, a 33-percent cut pushes 3DS games Pushmo and Crashmo down to $4.69 and $6 respectively. That offer ends on June 13, a week before Pushmo World drops on Wii U.

An officially licensed adapter will allow Super Smash Bros. Melee veterans to play the upcoming Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. with GameCube controllers, Nintendo announced today.
The peripheral allows players to connect up to four GameCube controllers to the Wii U via a USB dongle. Nintendo has not announced whether WaveBird wireless controllers are supported, or if GameCube controller support is planned for other Wii U games.
Smash Bros. brawlers have plenty of input options to choose from, including Nintendo's own Wii U Pro Controller, Wii Classic Controllers, and PDP's upcoming Wired Fight Pad. The Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. will launch this winter.

Is Nintendo going to finally give us a ‘proper’ reveal of the new Legend of Zelda game on Wii U at E3 next month?
It’s impossible to say, but tweets from Zelda Williams – daughter of Robin Williams, who named her after Nintendo’s popular IP – point to something Zelda related in LA.
“Who's going to E3? I'll be doing something extra special there. More details soon!” she wrote. “I'm going to guarantee you, it's not what you think...”
Zelda (and her father) were involved in the promotion of Wii title Skyward Sword and featured as part of Nintendo’s 25thanniversary celebrations for the franchise.
It should be noted that her favourite Zelda game to date is N64’s Majora’s Mask – which itself has been rumoured for some Wind Waker style HD remake treatment.
All the way back at E3 2011 Nintendo showcased a demo reel featuring an HD video of a modern looking Link fighting a monster. In 2013 it confirmed that Zelda was in development for Wii U, pencilling in this year’s E3 for a proper reveal.
The company also admitted that the game nearly featured as part of ots E3 2013 presentation.

Bayonetta 2 has been classified in Australia, sparking speculation that publisher Nintendo may announce a release date soon.
The ratings board classified the game MA 15+ earlier this week, noting that it contains strong fantasy violence.
As part of its 2014 financial results briefing earlier this month, Nintendo listed the Platinum Games sequel for release this year in Japan, North America and Europe.
Bayonetta 2 was initially unveiled during a Nintendo Direct web broadcast in September 2012, when it was revealed to be a Wii U exclusive.
Published by Sega, the critically acclaimed original Bayonetta released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in Japan in October 2009, and in North America, Europe and Australia in January 2010.

Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media's legal dispute with Oculus VR wouldn't deter the Elder Scrolls firm from making Oculus Rift games, according to PR and marketing vice president Pete Hines.
Asked about the impact the lawsuit has on Bethesda's potential Oculus Rift plans, Hines told CVG: "I don't think that it's an incentive or a deterrent [to make Rift games]. I mean, that situation is what it is.
"We have and will continue to make decisions that we think are in the best interests of our games and our audience."
ZeniMax claims Oculus Rift was only made possible through years of its own research and investment. It alleges that former employee and now-Oculus chief technology officer John Carmack stole its property to aid the development of the virtual reality headset. Carmack has publicly derided the claims.
Oculus says Rift does not use a single line of ZeniMax code or technology and "will prove that all of its claims are false". The company has pointed to its recent $2 billion acquisition by Facebook as a likely cause for the legal action.
CVG's interview with Hines also covers upcoming survival horror gameThe Evil Within and the complications that caused the Elder Scrolls Online's recent console delay.

Nintendo has set expectations low, but the company could take advantage of the situation with a good showing at E3
[h=3]Nintendo of America[/h]
The situation facing Nintendo for E3 2014 is a strange one. The company has been losing money for the past couple of years, and its flagship Wii U console has consistently undersold Nintendo's projections; even the 3DS has been slowing down. Sales of software have also been less than expected. On the other hand, Nintendo's in a good position to have a successful E3 show. Expectations are low, the company is saving money (and further reducing expectations) by not holding a press event. What can we expect to see from Nintendo at E3 2014?
First, let's look at the landscape for Nintendo. The Wii U's sales are on track to be Nintendo's worst-selling console ever, and the situation is unlikely to change soon. The company is hoping to boost sales with Mario Kart 8 and the new Super Smash Bros., but third-party support is vanishing. Companies like Electronic Arts have no plans to put out Wii U versions of hit titles, and even Ubisoft (which has done very well with Wii titles like Just Dance) won't be displaying any Wii U titles at E3. Salvation won't be coming from third-party publishers.

The 3DS, which has been performing well after a rocky start, is slowing down, and Nintendo predicts lower sales this year of the hardware despite the introduction of the $129 2DS last Christmas. Overall, then, Nintendo is looking at a difficult year for its hardware.
This leads us to E3 2014, where Nintendo has (like last year) elected not to have a major press event, or even a presentation inside their booth as they did last year. Instead, the company will stage a Super Smash Bros. tournament and provide a Nintendo Direct video to fans everywhere. Essentially, the video will be Nintendo's press event, only produced in a carefully controlled environment at a considerable cost savings. What can we expect to find out from this video and from Nintendo's booth?
No new consoles
Nintendo may have concluded that the Wii U in its current form is not going to be a hit, and that a new console is probably warranted. But creating new hardware takes time, and it takes even more time to create software for it. If Nintendo has learned anything about its latest hardware introductions, it should be that killer software needs to be introduced with the hardware. So we aren't going to see new consoles this year, unless perhaps it's a new color.

Nintendo is planning a revenue-sharing affiliate program for those using gameplay footage of its games on YouTube. Video bloggers and "Let's Play" creators alike will need permission from the publisher to broadcast their gameplay clips, according to twotweets from the publisher (as translated byGamasutra).
Just over one year ago, Nintendo issued Content ID Match copyright claims on YouTube videos that featured gameplay clips from its suite of published titles. After the backlash that followed the House of Mario attempting to obtain the whole pie from YouTubers, it's now settling for a slice of it: The new affiliate program would see ad revenue from videos split among Nintendo, Google and the video creators themselves. Nintendo is apparently getting a head start, as it has already tagged recent gameplay videos, placing their advertisements on them.
It's still unknown whether YouTube's Content ID Match system would affect livestreaming platform Twitch, providing the reports that YouTube is in talks toacquire Twitch for $1 billion go through.

Do you want to take on the challengers of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U with a sense of fa-melee-iarity? Good news: third-party accessory manufacturer PDP is working with Nintendo to produce the Wired Fight Pad, a controller designed after the original, fan-favorite GameCube controller.
The Wired Fight Pad will connect via a Wii Remote's bottom port, so you'll already need to own said Remote to use the Fight Pad. The good news is, that means it's also compatible with the Wii. The Wired Fight Pad will work with any of that system's games that support the Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro.
The Wired Fight Pad is set to release alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with an estimated price of $24.99. We've been told to expect Smash sometimethis winter.

One of Nintendo’s less successful IPs could very well be on track for a Wii U resurrection.
Patents unearthed by NeoGAF look very much like Wii U Music and show how a player can assume the role of several musicians within a composition.
Specifically the documents outline a method via which the sound of a user’s current instrument is outputted via the GamePad and the rest of the track is heard through the TV.
While the game’s original E3 2006 unveiling at the hands of development legend Shigeru Miyamoto was memorable, the title itself failed to resonate with either critics or gamers and has gone on the become best known as one of Miyamoto’s rare misses.
Can a sequel on Wii U, even if technically accomplished, do anything to reverse that?

Super Smash Bros. uses the Wii U's near-field communication technology, if comments by Nintendo France MD Stephan Bole are accurate. Following the company's unveiling of NFC figurines, Bole told Le Figaro the tech features in the console version of the new fighter.
"E3 will be an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology on Nintendo consoles," Bole said (via Polygon). "NFC will be used in the Wii U version ofSuper Smash Bros."
Apart from the sense it makes given the huge roster of Nintendo's fighter, the comments are in line with what the company said earlier this month. President Satoru Iwata revealed Nintendo will showcase the Skylanders-like tech at next month's E3 conference, along with compatible games. Furthermore, Nintendo plans to launch the figurines by the end of this year, and Super Smash Bros. is due to hit Wii U this winter. What today's news does raise is the question of the 3DS Super Smash Bros, which is out this summer; Nintendo will release a NFC reader and writer for the handheld in the first half of 2015.
Bole's comments coincide with the unveiling of another returning Smash character, with Fire Emblem's Ike joining the burgeoning cast today - just in case you thought the House of Mario was done with the conveyor belt of reveals. The beefier-looking swordsman joins 29 other combatants already revealed for the upcoming brawler.
