The co-founder of Criterion has claimed Nintendo and EA were both markedly uninterested in marketing the Wii U version of Need For Speed: Most Wanted.
Now in charge of indie studio Three Fields Entertainment having left Criterion, Alex Ward recently stated on Twitter: "We will make games for all platforms where we can self-publish."
When a follower asked if this included Wii U, Ward replied: "Probably not to be honest, but never say never."
Ward was then accused by another follower of refusing to support Nintendo hardware, and "stealth releasing" Need For Speed: Most Wanted on Wii U (a suggestion that the game was not marketed).
"Totally wrong," Ward replied. "I did [support Wii U]. Second, I complained when the company didn't even bother to press the discs with our game on."
He continued: "Hey, we worked our arses off. Neither Nintendo or EA gave a shit about it. A group of us did try. Bitch and moan at the publishers, not the developers.
"We just did the coding. Like we had any choice over when it was released? Or the price? Everyone is so quick to blame the developers. Folks worked through New Year to deliver that. We tried to do our best.
"We even flew to Nintendo to personally demo in a bid for marketing support. There was none. The game was not even physically released initially in Europe. Members of the team could not even buy their own game. Do you think we were happy about that?
"Idris, Rob, Chris, Paul, Jim did what was asked of them. Everyone else let us down. Stuff like that pissed me off hence I left EA and have started my own company using my savings. So seeing as our families won't eat if we **** up, we will choose our platforms carefully."
The Wii U version of Need For Speed: Most Wanted was deemed the "definitive edition" by EA, offering a number of Wii U exclusive features and significantly better graphics than the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, due to its textures being based on the PC version of the game.

A new Smash Bros. 4 screenshot has revealed that the 3DS version will feature a stage set on the tropical island of the latest 3DS title, Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
This is the latest stage to be confirmed for the portable title, and comes after the prior revelation of the Animal Crossing stage in the Wii U version of the game, which differs greatly from the 3DS stage seen below.
Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS are being co-developed by Namco Bandai. The games have not yet been given release dates, though they are expected to launch in 2014.
Nintendo recently revealed that King Dedede will be returning as a playable character in the game.
Other confirmed characters include Capcom's Mega Man and Animal Crossing's Villager and Wii Fit Trainer, as well as Rosalina and Lumafrom Super Mario Galaxy.
Nintendo has also offered an update on gameplay changes it is making, stating that the development team is rethinking edge-hanging, a high-level strategy expert players could use to make battles a little bit harder for their opponents.

Nintendo of Europe announced a limited edition Mario Kart 8 is coming to the continent, and it includes a spiky blue collector's model that you probably shouldn't chuck at friends, even if you really want first place. Europeans can shell out for it when the racer launches on May 30, while Nintendo of America has yet to announce a similar edition as yet.
Nintendo also announced a Mario Kart 8 promo that harks back to the series' beginnings more than two decades ago - and to what is still the best entry in the series according to people who are right. Yes, SNES classic Super Mario Kart is swerving its way onto the Wii U Virtual Console in Europe on March 27, and if you buy it before June 30 you get a £5.49/8 euros discount on the downloadable version of Mario Kart 8.

After a delay that pulled its newest open world title from the roster of two console launches, Ubisoft has set a new release date for Watch Dogs: May 27, 2014. The new release date targets versions in development on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360 and PS3.
During a financial call in February, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot announced that the Wii U release of Watch Dogs would see its own separate delay, pushing the version's release beyond other platforms in order to "focus the team's resources where they could have the broadest possible benefit for both our customers and Ubisoft." No firm date for the Wii U version has been established.
Speaking with Joystiq, Watch Dogs Senior Producer Dominic Guay could only say the Wii U version would arrive "a few months" after the game's release on counterpart platforms.

UPDATE: Shantae Half-Genie Hero is targeted for an October 2014 release date, not August 2014 as previously stated. Kickstarter backers in the beta tier will receive early access in August 2014.
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse for Nintendo 3DS has been slightly delayed from its planned Q1 2014 release window, and no wonder! Genies are fickle. Pirates are no better, following fortune and trade winds wherever they may lead. It figures WayForward, the renowned 2D game developer behind Shantae, would have to delay the game with these wildcards in starring roles. That and it takes a lot of time to make a hand drawn, exploration-based platformer.
"Shantae and the Pirate's Curse will be in development for a couple more months while we add a few finishing touches," tweeted WayForward on Monday. "Almost there!"
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is the third game in WayForward's cult series that stretches back to the Capcom-published Shantae on Game Boy Color. Announced back in November 2012, Pirate's Curse is set to expand on the Metroidvania mix of exploration and action from the DSiWare game Shantae: Risky's Revenge.
It's also one of two Shantae games currently in production. Shortly after announcing Pirate's Curse, WayForward opened a Kickstarter fund for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC. After meeting its goal, that game was pegged for an August 2014 release. With the delay of Pirate's Curse it's not impossible that Hero will get pushed back as well. WayForward is also working on a PC remake of the old Namco arcade game Wonder Momo andthe Activision-backed Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark.

This week's round of eShop releases is more for the retro-heads among you. For starters NES nostalgics can to take to different kinds of green in Adventure Island 2 (3DS) and NES Open Tournament Golf (Wii U), while fans of 1980s anime Mysterious Cities of Gold may be tempted by 3DS puzzle-adventureSecret Paths.
On the new releases side, puzzler Blok Drop U has one of the cheapest launch prices (if not the cheapest) you'll find on Wii U, or any console for that matter. It's also one of the first HTML5 games on the system, so we may see others pitched at similar prices.
Talking of low prices and retro, Runner2 is getting a sale starting next week on March 10: The rhythmic auto-runner slides from $15 to $5 until 9AM PT/midday ET on March 17.

Do not pass "Go," do not collect 200 rupees, go straight to Kakariko Village jail. Tough luck, draw a Chance card. Oops, you've picked up the Pokeball Maintenance card. Pay the bank a cool 500 Pokedollars, chump.
These and other friendship-ending, family-rending frustrations can all be yours when USAopoly drops The Legend of Zelda and Pokemon Monopoly boardgames on the general public in 2014. Announced at Toy Fair International 2014 in February, USAopoly will extend its vast empire of licensed Monopoly boardgames with two of Nintendo's most recognized franchises. Both boards will cost $45.
The Pokemon board is specific in its selections for Boardwalk and Park Place proxies, sticking to the Kanto region Pokemon Leaf Green and Pokemon Fire Red. On the other hand, The Legend of Zelda Monopoly is a blank slate, as USAopoly hasn't said whether or not it will be tied to a specific game in the series. While Nintendo's done more in recent years to draw continuity betweenZelda games, they still vacillate in tone and aesthetic. Wind Waker Water Works next to the Twilight Princess Electric Company would look pretty freaky.
These will be the second and third Nintendo-based Monopoly sets out of USAopoly, following up from the more general Nintendo Collector's Editionboard that came out way back in 2006. How dated is that board? It's got placeholder art of Slippy from Star Fox Assault on it. A 2014 update is probably smart.
Monopoly isn't the only Parker Brothers classic getting some Nintendo loving. There will also be a Connect 4 Super Mario Bros. set this year. How are people supposed to know they won if the pieces are all gold coins, though? And there are only seven red coins in every stage, so balance is impossible! Someone didn't think this through properly.

Japanese developer Inti Creates (Mega Man 9, Mega Man ZX) will launch its latest game Azure Striker: Gunvolt via the Nintendo 3DS eShop this summer, with Mega Man character designer Keiji Inafune serving as executive producer.
Azure Striker: Gunvolt is a 2D side-scrolling action game starring a character with psychic powers, allowing him to harness the power of lightning for ranged attacks and other special abilities. The game shares much of its creative staff with Mighty No. 9, a Mega Man spiritual successor funded via Kickstarter last year.
Azure Striker: Gunvolt will premiere in the Japanese eShop (as Armed Striker: Gunvolt) this summer. A North American release date has not been confirmed, though the game's official website notes that an ESRB rating is pending.

Thinking about jumping into the world of Wii U console ownership? For a limited time, Nintendo's online store is offering refurbished Deluxe bundles for $200, knocking $50 off the console's regular price.
The bundle includes a black Wii U 32GB console, Wii U gamepad, pack-in NintendoLand game, adapters for the console and gamepad, a sensor bar for Wii controller compatibility and an HDMI cable. The console also carries a standard one year warranty.
The only caveat is the bundle is not eligible for Club Nintendo registration, meaning new owners can't earn coins toward special offers available from Nintendo. Though Nintendo says products in the bundle "may have minor cosmetic blemishes, it is guaranteed to be fully functional."
Nintendo's latest home console is home to some of our favorite exclusives, including 'Best of' titles Super Mario 3D World from 2013 and 2012's ZombiU. Some multiplatform stuff? You may find yourself waiting a little longer than on other consoles.

Our friends at Engadget report that Pennzoil and Nintendo have partnered up for what the 8-year old inside us could only describe as "the coolest commercial ever, next to those Stretch Armstrong guys." The two companies have brought the Mario Kart franchise into the real world with modified karts on a specially-designed track at the SXSW festival.
Icons representing familiar in-game weapons like the banana peel and red shell (as well as a Pennzoil icon) are spread throughout a 1,000-foot long track, and grant bonuses when activated. The Pennzoil icon, for example, will speed up a driver's kart. The karts are representative of Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser who - hey, imagine that! - will be appearing in Mario Kart 8, due this May.
This might seem like a strange partnership, but hey, it's not the first time Nintendo has spread to the real world to cross-promote products. Besides, the Big N couldn't have found a more appropriate partner - Pennzoil is owned by Shell. Shell. Get it? Cuz it's Mario Kart.

Childhood fears might seem silly now that we're all grown up, but it's amazing how strongly we could convince ourselves of basement monsters and lurking ghosts when we were alone in our darkened houses. Taking those fears on isn't always easy for a kid, but Ashlyn seems ready to bash her way through them all using toys and puppets in Hush, Game Studio 78's episodic action adventure game set in an abandoned orphanage.
Each of Hush's episodes will consist of three chapters built around specific fears. The first episode's "Fear of Thunder" chapter, for instance, will contain monsters that paralyze Ashlyn with loud noises, comparable to how claps of thunder leave some children immobile from fear. Fear of darkness, spiders and clowns are also among Hush's subject matter, just in case you've forgotten why you .
Game Studio 78 cites Alice: Madness Returns as an inspiration for Hush's surreal environment and twisted enemies, while also drawing comparisons to The Legend of Zelda series in reference to its puzzles. Since Ashlyn is facing fears, players will need to keep her braveness gauge filled as they explore - failing to do so means having to flee from battles, unless Ashlyn outright faints.
Hush is currently on Indiegogo and is planned to reach PC and Mac first, with Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U versions following. Android and iOS mobile ports will follow if their €100,000 stretch goal is met, but €50,000 is needed for development of the first three episodes on home platforms.
