Even with the fluctuating currency issues, Nintendo is far outpacing its rivals in console profitability. A May 2007 analysis of the profit/loss derived from the consoles of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo showed that Microsoft lost at least $126 per Xbox 360 unit and maybe as much as $300; Sony's PS3 lost $300 per console; and the Wii delivers a $92 of profit for each unit sold.
Nintendo announced in its most recent quarterly results that it had sold 5.2 million Wii consoles in the quarter, a 50 percent increase compared to the same period in 2007, and that profits jumped 34 percent. In Japan, however, Wii sales were cut in half. In total, Nintendo said that it had sold nearly 30 million Wiis since 2006.
Recent NPD Group data showed that since January 2008, Nintendo has sold 4 million Wii consoles, compared with Sony's 1.8 million PS3s and Microsoft's 1.6 million Xbox 360s.
So while Nintendo's financials look good overall, has the shortage affected the long-term prospects of the Wii in the ultracompetitive U.S. market? "Well, it depends on if you think that a loss sale of a Wii results in someone buying a competitive product or substitute, so they won't buy a Wii in the future," Pachter says. "And they [Nintendo] don't think so, nor do I."
In addition, because manufacturing costs are high, he adds, Nintendo appears to be reasoning that a "deferred sale" in the U.S. -- meaning that consumers will most likely wait for a Wii and eventually buy one -- is a strategy that's working quite well.
AMR's Richardson is less convinced. "I think you lose your lead-for every product that exists on the market they'll soon be a better version," he says. "In consumer electronics, you've got to be very fickle and pay close attention to the product lifecycle. You have to take a much more holistic approach from linking all of that demand sensing back to supply planning. And if this stuff is all coordinated inside Nintendo, it doesn't appear that way in the U.S. market."
So when will the U.S. shortage end? Nintendo pledged in mid-2008 to increase manufacturing capacity over the summer to meet the ongoing demand. It plans to sell 25 million Wiis during its upcoming fiscal year (which ends March 2009). Pachter expects Nintendo to manufacturer around 27 million consoles.
But, he adds, "It's just a question of when are they going to start showing up."

If you've been waiting on Bioware's Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, then you've been waiting on a definitive look at the game's combat system. Heck, we have! Well, boys and girls, the wait is over. Feast your eyeballs on the trailer above and tell us what you think in the comments!
Sega wanted to clear something up about MadWorld at Games Convention. You won't just be cruising the black and white streets of Mad City, tossing scores of chumps into meat grinders, slicing them in half with Dumpster lids and beheading them in style with daggers akimbo. There's more to it than that.
First of all, there are mini-game challenges, like the Death Press, in which Jack, the star of MadWorld, will have to toss as many bodies into a spike-filled crusher before time runs out. You know, to break the monotony of turning faces into pulp and being showered with blood.
Plus, there are driving sequences, specifically riding a motorcycle with a chainsaw in your right hand sequences. While the motorbike level we saw at Games Convention was nearly devoid of traffic (and losers to chainsaw), the final game will absolutely see plenty of carnage on the streets.
Finally, there are boss battles. The one we got a glimpse of featured a series of tornadoes moving in a serpentine path down a bridge, with a whirlwind tossing boss at the other end. The chainsaw versus giant turbine handed boss combat didn't get much screen time, as it faded to black as Platinum Games producer Atsushi Inaba scrapped with the tornado man.
There's a definite concern on our end that the endless goring of your enemies might lead to some repetition, so we hope these portions of the game help to shatter that. Until we go hands-on, we'll have to be satisfied with just looking. Like looking at these new screen shots. *hint hint*

Sega has said during a presentation of MadWorld today that it is working with ratings boards to make sure MadWorld gets the appropriate rating, following controversy over the Wii-exclusive title's extreme violence.
MadWorld came under fire recently when Watchdog groups called for the game to be banned, claiming its violent nature will "spoil" the family-friendly appeal of Wii.
"Yes, it's violent," admitted Sega marketing man David Corless. "We don't try to hide that, but as publishers, we see it as a fantasy game - it's fantasy violence. It's over the top. It's cartoony."
Corless added: "We also take the violence very seriously. We are working with the age rating boards, with PEGI and with BBFC. We're not at the end of the game's development, but we're working with them now to make sure that we don't go over the top.
"The game has been banned in Germany; there's no getting around that unfortunately. But we are taking it seriously and we're going to make sure that this game is rated for the appropriate audience," he said.
Let's hope it doesn't get toned down too much - we saw it earlier today and it looked flipping brilliant. Impressions soon.

Samba de Amigo on Wii will offer downloadable content when a trio of songs are added shortly after the game launches on 19th September.
"Mambo Mambo" by Lou Bega, "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow, and "Are you Going to Be My Girl" by Jet will join the main set-list of over 40 songs on 23rd September.
SEGA will announce regional pricing soon, apparently.
Samba de Amigo involves shaking your Wiimote and nunchuk along to on-screen prompts designed to match the rhythm of the music.
The Dreamcast original had actual maracas, but the Wiimote and nunchuk are up to the challenge, using the Wiimote speaker to create the same impression.

Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop for the Nintendo Wii is not a game for members of the press. It's nearly impossible for us to look at the game objectively after spending countless hours playing the highly superior Xbox 360 original. It's like reading War and Peace and then trying to fully appreciate the Cliff Notes version. It's can't begin to approach the level of polish, complexity, and the overall experience of the original, plus your friends might laugh at you if they catch you buying it. As I sat in on a hands on session with the title, I could see by the expressions on my peers' faces that no one seemed to be all that impressed.
No, Dead Rising for the Wii is for those folks who haven't owned a 360, haven't been steeped in Dead Rising press releases, news stories, previews, and reviews over the past couple of years - basically folks that don't read our website all that much. With that in mind, let's look at what's changing in the hobbled version of Dead Rising.
Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop uses a modified version of the engine for Resident Evil 4, so it might do the title a little more justice to consider it a Resident Evil parody rather than associate it with the original game. The change of engines modifies the entire feel of the game, giving it a more slow and plodding feel that its predecessor. You aim with the Wii remote, shoot with the trigger, and can either hit a button to initiate melee attacks or charge up your melee weapon by shaking the remote in order to unleash powerful special for more powerful strikes. The gun because much more important in the Wii version, as special melee maneuvers require that you stun your opponent with gunshots first. Even the lovable servo heads require a gunshot first, ruining the fun of running about willy-nilly tossing plastic heads all over the place.
In order to free up more CPU, Capcom had to sacrifice weapons. Any weapon that had a similar function as another has been condensed into one. This helps performance of course, but in exchange you lose the feeling of immersion you used to receive from being able to pick up nearly anything and use it as a weapon.
Of course the number of zombies on screen have been reduced, with the small demo level we experienced never showing more than a dozen zombies at a time, though they have upped variety a bit with the inclusion of evil poodle enemies and rare enemies like the electric police woman from the original game making her debut as a standard enemy.
There are some positive changes though. Overtime mode is unlocked from the get, go, and you no longer have to juggle side missions with your main objectives now that all of the side missions are required, a fact that Capcom PR thought might even make the game something players of the original might want to play through. Pretty sure they're wrong there, but the thought was nice.
Dead Rising: Shop Til You Drop might be one of the best zombie-shooting games the Wii has ever seen, but unless you've never been exposed to the original game you you might find some of the cuts a bit too deep.

Sonic Chronicles, the hedgehog's first foray into the world of role-playing, is the other good-looking Sonic game on the cards for 2008 - which is no surprise seeming as it's been put together by the skilled bods at BioWare.
The RPG veteran's vision of the Sonic world is certainly satisfying (and the art style's lovely) though unfortunately once again we have to put up with Sonic's massive cast of mates following him around.
Hold up, it looks like Sega's got even more Sonic Unleashed screenshots to offer us - this time from the Wii version, and it's looking pretty good in our humble estmation.
Make sure you have a look at yesterday's 360 and PS3 batch as well, and try to ignore the questionable-looking werewolf bits.
Just blue skies and 2D-style platforming... ah, bliss.
Nintendo has decided to run another Hanabi festival, which means various games that never made their way west or to Europe will be added to Virtual Console.
Top of the pops today is Super Mario RPG from the heady days of the SNES, bumped up to 900 Wii Points (approx GBP 6.30 / EUR 9) because, presumably, rare games are more expensive. Still, we get a two month head-start on the US, for once.
The other game, Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, was added for a limited time to Virtual Console back in a previous Hanabi Festival splurge. However, Lost Levels is back for good this time and costs 600 Wii Points (approx GBP 4.20 / EUR 6).
Future titles to look out for in the Hanabi Festival are Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa (NES), DoReMi Fanatasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure (SNES), Spelunker (NES) and Dig Dug (NES).
No word on how this will affect the alternating WiiWare / Virtual Console updates.

Way of the Pixel had a competition (if you can call it that, since nobody wins) a bit ago to create Gameboy-ized versions of modern games. They're here, and I pretty much want to play all of them. If you can't figure out what one is, just right click and check the image name, that's what I did. There are lots of great ones in there, but I think my favorites are BioShock (left), Phantom Dust (criminally unplayed game), Odin Sphere, Tenchu, and Dodonpachi. Thanks to Frank for pointing it out.

News via 1emulation of a new GBA Emulator for Windows, heres the details:
ReasonableGBA v0.1 released. This is a new GBA emulator, better than shiteGBA was.
ReasonableGBA is a development of my old emulator shiteGBA. It's no longer shite though, merely reasonable, hence the name change. It can run most GBA games, though there are still some bugs.
My obj 2 header tool has been updated and is near completion. The tool takes 3D .obj files and converts them into GL vertex data (including normals and texture co-ordinates). There are some small bugs that need ironing out. Currently runs correctly so long as your model is built out of quads and is all one mesh.
Second tool update is a little application I built to save time, I use it in conjuction with eRightSoft's SUPER video tool. My app finds all FLV files in your internet browsers cache, copies and renames them to a .flv file (this speeds up getting video files off of sites like youtube or megavideo). So you can then convert them to .dpg files with SUPER video tool.
Enjoy! -Rhys Thomas www.polygonprophecy.com
This program will let you edit any and all of the region information on your
Wii, and allow you to install System Menu 3.2 from any region if you so
desire. The setting changes are the result of a setting change library I've
been working on for a while called sysconf.c. The System Menu Installer
uses patchmii as a simple base for web installations. It also uses some
IOS patches (by bushing/waninkoko) in the event that the system menu
or IOS30 needs to be downgraded. The Setting changes have been
tested again and again, and the worst you can do to your system is
cause a semi-brick. The System Menu Installer is done in a way even
safer than Waninkoko's Downgrader, so there's certainly no worries there.
This software comes with NO WARRANTY WHATSOEVER. You may use this
software at your own risk. I can take no responsibility for any damage
caused by this application.
Please take note of the following:
-If setting.txt is corrupted for any reason, it is entirely possible that
your Wii will no longer boot.
-Be careful not to change Video mode to a mode unsupported by your
display.
-If you change your Country code, you will be unable to receive any
pending gifts you have in the Wii Shop Channel. (The shop will also
warn you of this)
-If you set the EULA to Read, you may be accessing Nintendo
Network Services illegally. You should only change this setting to
"read" if you have actually read and accepted the EULA for the
Country code you have set.
Compiling:
To compile this, you will need libogc cvs with the patch in libogc_patches
applied, and you will have to provide System Menu identification items
in the data directory.
License:
Patchmii is licensed under the GPLv2, and as such a copy of the license is
included. The non-patchmii material is under a BSD-like license.
Credits:
bushing, svpe, and everyone else for their wonderful work on patchmii.
Waninkoko for his title_version check IOS patch, and for inspiring me to
do a better job.
Anyone brave enough to test for me. ChipD, SoraK05, crediar.
And a shout out to SquidMan who fights many of the same fights I do.
Have fun guys
