News/release from Schmendrick :
Hi everyone,
As the title suggests, I'm making a Liero adaptation for the DS. I figured I'd upload a working version too, maybe people'd get a little enthusiastic about it then
[EDIT]
I should add the controls
Menus:
Pretty standard: D-pad and A/B/Start for navigating/modifying
Level editor:
Stylus to draw, Up/Down for brush size, Left/Right for brush type, B for save menu; Select Yes, input a name with the stylus, and press OK
Ingame:
D-Pad to walk/aim, A to jump, B to fire, X for Ninja Rope, Y for digging, L/R to switch weapons
[/EDIT]
There are still a few issues with this game, however:
* The game runs, as stated before, really slow on emulators. Try playing it on your DS for smooth gameplay;
* Most weapons work, except for laser type weapons (laser, gauss gun, etc) and direction steerable weapons (missile);
* Using a Big Nuke isn't the best thing to do: It uses up all the sprites and can sometimes mess up the game;
* There's a weird bug that allows weapons to move through the ground;
* Sometimes when picking up weapon bonuses the game freezes;
* There's no AI or multiplayer: See first post;
* You can draw a game for a single 'session': As soon as you turn off your DS the level will be gone;
* Bonuses will move through the ground when it appears underground.
I'll try to fix the level loading myself (I'd like to get a list of available levels to choose from), but if you have any code ready for that, I'll gladly hear about it As for now level saving is disabled too, to make sure everything else does work. You do have to select yes to save, and input a name (press OK when done), I don't think you can play the level otherwise.
Other than that, the game pretty much works as it should.
Please try it out, tell me what you think, and if possible help me out with the liblobby/efslib usage;D

News/release from jsds
My first completed PALib application. After looking into 3D stuff and not really completing anything, I needed something simple and got this idea when I realized after 8 years Catholic schooling [and now 10 years after that] I was forgetting to say some of the basic prayers. Also, I forgot all about the Rosary and this helped me relearn and revisit Rosary basics. I certainly will meditate with the Rosary more, now that I have this. Its funny I can play Madden 09 and then say the Rosary all on my DS!
http://therosaryds.googlecode.com
More info:
Say, learn, and practice saying the Rosary on a Nintendo DS! A wonderful new way to enjoy this traditional Christocentric prayer. Do you need an easy way to brush-up on your Hail Marys, Our Fathers, Apostles' Creed, and Glory Be to the Father prayers? Try out The RosaryDS.
Features
Learn and practice the Rosary prayers while reading the screen.
Press the 'Pray with Me' button for a voice to read with you.
Automatically knows the day and date for the Mystery scriptures.
Extras feature.
What is the Rosary?
The Rosary is made up of twenty "mysteries" (significant events or moments in the life of Jesus and Mary), which, following the Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, are grouped into four series. The Rosary is made of beads which represent which prayer is to be recited. Normally, the person saying the rosary holds on to the current bead in which they are reciting.
The first of the four mysteries contains joyful mysteries (recited on Mondays and Saturdays); the second, the mysteries of light (Thursdays); the third, the sorrowful mysteries (Tuesdays and Fridays); and the fourth, the glorious mysteries (Wednesdays and Sundays).
"This indication is not intended to limit a rightful freedom in personal and community prayer, where account needs to be taken of spiritual and pastoral needs and of the occurrence of particular liturgical celebrations which might call for suitable adaptations." (Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 38).

News via playeradvance
µ Library is a new library for Nintendo DS. Basically, it is meant to use the 3D GPU to create nice 2D games very easily, using a different approach than existing libraries (quite similar to OSLib).
The 3D GPU provides additional effects over the 2D GPU, like full transparency with alpha channel (objects can blend amongst them), a larger number of sprites (up to 1536 instead of 128), no zoom or rotation limit (2x with the 2D GPU), a larger limit for the sprite size (2048x2048 instead of 64x64). It is also possible to draw primitives like lines, rectangles, etc. allowing nice effects like in Yoshi's island for example
µLibrary also provides a low level layer and is open to the hardware. You can also mix 2D and 3D in a single project.
The problem of using the 3D GPU is clear: you can only use one screen at a time, or 2 screens but at 30 fps. However, µLibrary is fully compatible with PALib and you can use it to handle the second screen at 60 fps. It's a good solution if you do not plan to use the second screen intensively: displaying a BG with some sprites and get the stylus state could be enough, and you can concentrate on the main screen which is driven by µLibrary.
Here is a small list of functionalities offered by µLibrary:
Supported image formats: PNG, GIF, JPG
Special image effects: stretching, tinting (4 corners), mirroring, rotation (with a defined center), selection of an image frame to display (just like on spritesheets).
18-bit render quality instead of 15-bit: provides 8 times more colors!
Virtual file system: it is possible to load files independantly from the actual support (RAM, libFat, GBFS are supported by default, but you can define your own). Allows to create more easily software that are compatible with all existing linkers
Untextured geometry (rectangles, gradients, lines, etc.)
Basic message box system
VideoGL wrapper for texture and palette loading in VRAM: it is now possible to load and unload things dynamically. Furthermore, it is more flexible (you can choose which banks you want to use for what, etc.)
Keypad and touchscreen handler namely with support of stylus speed and double click and support of autorepeated keys (menus for example).
Includes 2 splash screens
Low level wrapper to draw primitives
Text system using the same font format as OSLib
Performance is good, one of the examples shows that an unoptimized C++ code that draws 400 balls bouncing on the screen uses less than 15% of CPU...
A few examples are supplied, as well as a Doxygen documentation and a small .chm documentation with a FAQ. There are also 2 templates for VHAM, Programmers Notepad or just make, one with PALib and one without it.
The render method is similar to a sheet of paper: you first draw a background, then put some mountains, then some trees, some characters and so on: you draw your objects in the order they should appear on the screen (the first is behind, the last one is over the others).
23.08.08 | µLibrary 1.11
An update to µLibrary, correcting a few bugs.

Again: She's 17, she's blonde and she only faces "problems" with her hair and make up.
No need to worry about anything when Sunny cruises with her rich parents the Caribbean to celebrate their wedding day.
But suddenly a thunderstorm hits the ship, Sunny falls overboard into a life boat. When she regains consciousness, she notices herself being washed ashore on the beach of an island. She has no idea either where she is or where her parents and all the other cruise shippers are - she's lost.
This is how the PC version of Steve Ince's adventure game So Blonde starts. Back then, Sunny faced that beautiful Caribbean scenery - now, in So Blonde for Wii and Nintendo DS, this has changed: The island appears dark, no one is to see at the shores and strange black sand crunches underneath Sunny's feet. Rugged rocks border the beaches - Sunny has to make up something to get to the inner island. What was that up there on the cliff? Wasn't there a man? If so, why does he ignore Sunny's cry for help? Sunny will face a new adventure...
dtp entertainment and Wizarbox have announced the adventure game So Blonde for Wii and Nintendo DS which is a completely new adventure game, based on the beautiful heroine of the already-released PC versions. This time, the game's story, again written by adventure gaming legend Steve Ince, makes Sunny explore the dark side of the Forgotten Island, where she stranded.
Some of the incidents happening on the island are the same as in the PC version - but this time, Steve Ince drives the story into a completely new direction. Other islanders are coming to the fore and are taking over the lead roles in So Blonde for Wii and Nintendo DS.
Both versions' controls have been adapted to fit Wii Remote, Nunchuk and Nintendo DS-Touchpen easily. So, point & click control feels as it's meant to be. Also the party mini games included in So Blonde benefit from Nintendo's intuitive control systems.
dtp entertainment is going to release So Blonde for Wii and Nintendo DS in 2009.

Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) and System 3 announced today that Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli is now available in North America for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 computer entertainment systems, Wii, and Nintendo DS.
"Creating Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli has been a labor of love. Our obsession with capturing the Ferrari mystique is something racing game fans and auto aficionados will savor," said Mark Cale, CEO at System 3. "Activision is the best partner imaginable to distribute the game in North America, so we are in a fantastic position."
Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli is a re-creation of Ferrari's own racing series, where drivers unleash the world's most powerful, elegant cars on premiere international race tracks. The title was given a uniquely magical touch from GP2 driver Bruno Senna, nephew of F1 legend Ayrton, who acted as technical consultant on the game's handling.
"It's been refreshing to be a part of a racing title that takes itself seriously," said Dave Oxford, Activision Publishing. "Ferraris are elite performance machines and Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli simulates the exhilaration of driving them flawlessly."
Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli is a graphical beast - especially when running at 1080p on PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system. The game has 15 international racing circuits along with multiple gameplay modes such as Ferrari Challenge Seasons, Time Trial, Quick Race, and Endurance. The 16 competitor online multiplayer action is unmatched in terms of framerate and fun, even allowing Ferrari fanatics to race against European players who own the game. Downloadable content will be continually released for the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli community beginning in September.

Alien Crush Returns is a sci-fi pinball game based on the classic TurboGrafx-16 Alien Crush series from Hudson Entertainment. This unique sci-fi take on pinball includes enemies, power-ups, bonus stages and hidden surprises we know players will love."
For players who are confident in their alien crushing skills, they can go online to play against a friend to see who can get the higher score! Alien Crush Returns is the only pinball game for WiiWare that lets gamers compete head to head online. In addition, the game includes online leader boards for score-obsessed pinball players.
