Do you remember the last time? When the Wii launched at the tail end of 2006, it was to an air of excited curiosity that went well beyond the borders of core gamers, with Nintendo conjuring what ran close to a full-blown phenomenon. ... Nintendo's masterstroke, of course, has been resurrecting the ultimate hardcore poster girl with the announcement that Bayonetta 2 is heading exclusively to the Wii U. There's something slightly incongruous about an over-sexed, incredibly violent action game rubbing shoulders with Mario and co., but then again that's exactly what makes the proposition so very exciting. ... There's still one very important section of the market that may prove a little tougher to persuade. Right now it's harder to see the broader appeal of the Wii U, and it's not simply a case of fearing that it'll fail to replicate the success of its predecessor — there's every chance that it could endure the same rocky start that plagued Nintendo's 3DS.

Wii U the best place to make Bayonetta 2 successful, says Platinum Games CEO
Nintendo is dedicated to establishing the future of the games industry with the launch of the Wii U, the CEO of Platinum Games has said.
On the heels of the reveal of Bayonetta 2, Tatsuya Minami said the developer had chosen to release the game exclusively on the Wii U as it believes it can make the franchise stronger and reach a wider array of users on the next-gen system than on other consoles.
Minami added that whilst the announcement of Bayonetta 2 may have shocked fans, it had not intended to alienate users from the franchise.
“Bayonetta has fans the world over, and we would never dream of alienating them from participating in the future of Platinum Games,” he said.
"That being said, the console games market is in a state of upheaval, so establishing a new game franchise requires a considerable amount of will, determination, and love.

But console giant aware it must make each entry unique to avoid tarnishing its flagship franchise
There is no danger of Nintendo using the Mario franchise too much and milking it dry, the console giant’s Reggie Fils-Aime has said.
Speaking to gamesindustry, the Nintendo of America CEO said that developers at the company were always aware of the need to make each new entry in the Mario series unique to avoid the franchise growing tired.
He said that if it didn’t offer anything new or groundbreaking in Mario games, it would “kill the golden goose that lays the golden egg”.
The latest entry in the hugely successful and longstanding franchise, New Super Mario Bros U, is set to launch with Nintendo’s next-gen Wii U console.
It will be the third entry in as many years to release under the same brand, as well as a number of other Mario-themed titles.

Activision has thrown its full weight behind Nintendo's Wii U with a quartet of games led by its flagship shooter Call of Duty.
Activision publishing executive Eric Hirshberg stood on Nintendo's stage at a special press conference in New York to state that Wii U owners will get "the full Call of Duty" experience. He explained the game will be displayed in full HD, at sixty frames per second, adding that the Wii U was fully capable of hosting the type of games Activision wants to create.
As well as Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, the publisher will release 007 Legends, Transformers Prime and Skylanders Giants for the console.
The Wii U will be released in the US on November 18, priced at $299 for the basic model and $349 for the premium version.

Platinum Games' Project P-100 has been officially titled 'The Wonderful 101'.
The new moniker was revealed earlier today during the Nintendo Direct broadcast, whereBayonetta 2 was also revealed.Little is known about The Wonderful 101, but its influences are obvious. Visually it is very similar to Viewtiful Joe, a Capcom property developed by former Platinum Games staffers during their time at Clover Studio. The gameplay looks to be inspired by much-loved Nintendo classic Pikmin.
Here's the official description: "Earth is under attack from an invasion of enormous aliens, and the only thing that can protect the planet is a group of unlikely, yet mighty, heroes with special abilities. Unfortunately, the aliens are too powerful for the heroes to fight individually. They must join forces and work together to defeat their common enemy. These uniquely different heroes can morph into powerful weapons to crush the invaders or turn into objects like a giant fist or bridge to interact with and traverse the environments".

September 14th, 2012, 01:32 Posted By: wraggster
"There is a lot to ask you"Satoru Shibata said what we were all thinking when his boss Mr Iwata beamed into Europe's Nintendo Direct this afternoon.
The silence since Wii U's unveiling over a year ago has been deafening. Press and consumer confusion has given way to indifference, and this year's uninspiring E3 showcase did little to change that. Finally, we have a November 30th release date and a launch plan, but the big questions won't go away.
What is Wii U? Is it a suped-up Wii? Is it Nintendo's answer to iPad? Is it aimed at the hardcore or the family market? The launch software and pricing strategy revealed today suggests that Nintendo wants Wii U to somehow play all of these roles.
A large part of Wii's breathtaking success was because of its simplicity. One console, one intuitive controller, one killer app - Wii, its Remote and Wii Sports seduced the world. Even today, Wii sits way ahead of 360 and PS3 in terms of installed base. When Nintendo plays to its strengths, it makes accessible, colourful, life-affirming games for extraordinarily successful consoles.
Three launch SKUs for Europe shows that Nintendo's vision for Wii U isn't nearly as clear, or as daring. Basic, Premium and a ZombiU bundle speak of Nintendo's attempt to please both families and the hardcore. Extra Gamepads, Pro Controllers and how the Wii Remote fits in to all of this adds to the sprawling number of options available to the consumer.
And the muddled media messaging rumbles on, too: Four press briefings, one this morning for Japan, then later three simultaneously across Japan, the US and Europe. TVii was announced in the US, but nowhere else. Black Ops 2 was mentioned in passing in Europe's feed, and yet in the US, Activision talked its flagship shooter up while also confirming 007 Legends, Transformers Prime and Skylanders Giants on Wii U.
Thankfully for Nintendo, Wii U will not be judged on its fumbled reveal. Though the launch plan smacks of indecision, let's not allow that to overshadow some potentially brilliant videogames. I have no doubt that Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros U will both be excellent, and both Rayman Legends and LEGO City Undercover look ideal for a Nintendo console.
But does anyone care about Mass Effect 3 and Arkham City on Wii U? Will FIFA 13 really be improved with extra GamePad functionality? Tekken, Assassins Creed 3, Ninja Gaiden, Darksiders 2 - all hardcore games coming to Wii U, but to be blunt, they are unlikely to steer 360 or PS3 owners away from the console they already own. The reveal of Bayonetta 2 was today's biggest surprise, a game apparently rescued from the abyss by a Nintendo keen to seduce its small but vocal fanbase. A smart move in terms of reputation, but perhaps not commercially. Wii U's success does not depend on how well EA and Activision can port over its 360 and PS3 games, plonking a map screen on the GamePad. Nintendo consoles have always relied upon the genius of its first party software, widespread appeal and affordability. Wii U's Premium bundle encapsulates Nintendo's conundrum - a higher-priced, 'hardcore' black Wii U with greater storage space, but a family game like Nintendo Land bundled in with it.
Wii U will be just fine this Christmas with Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U leading the charge. After the honeymoon period is over, though, I would love to see Nintendo emerge with a clearer vision and a more focused strategy for Wii U. Right now, less than two months from launch, there are still questions to be answered.

Unlike in Japan, US-residing Wii U owners will not be able to purchase a second Gamepad controller from stores.
So confirmed Nintendo of America's director of PR Marc Franklin, who told Shacknews after today's Wii U New York event that US gamers will only be able to purchase a second Gamepad or replace a broken one) by contacting Nintendo customer support.Nintendo of Japan will be offering standalone Gamepads for the hefty price of 13,440 yen (£107/$172), but Franklin says that doing so in US 'might cause retail confusion' since there are currently no announced games which support a second Gamepad controller.
Nintendo has previously confirmed that Wii U hardware can support two tablet Game Pads simultaneously, but games that take advantage of this shouldn't be expected until some time after launch.
All local multiplayer games for Wii U so far use a combination of a single Gamepad controller and multiple Wii Remotes.

The Nintendo Wii U may only have 8 to 32GB of internal memory, but the company's taking a decidedly open approach to expanding that memory: add your own. "You can plug in a full-on three terabyte hard drive if you want. I'll love you as a digital consumer," Nintendo America CEO and president Reggie Fils-Aime told us during a post-press conference investor Q&A. Much like Sony's PlayStation 3, the Wii U allows for expansion of memory via USB, whether that memory be Flash or otherwise. Fils-Aime explained that, with the continuously dropping price of memory, there was little reason to offer pricing for the Wii U -- available in $300 and $350 -- tied to an evolving hardware model.
"The reason we did it that way is that the cost of that type of storage memory is plummeting. What we didn't want to do is tie a profit model to something that's gonna rapidly decline over time. We'll let the consumer buy as much as they want, as cheaply as they want," Fils-Aime said.
Fils-Aime also confirmed that the Wii U doesn't have TiVO hardware built into it -- functionality will require an existing TiVO box. The same goes for DVR functionality, which Fils-Aime said Nintendo doesn't want consumers to bear the expense of.

Nintendo TVii will support "all" cable and dish carriers in the US and Canada, Nintendo director of strategic partnership Zach Fountain told Engadget this afternoon. He said that no major carriers are excluded, and the only requirement for signing up is inputting your cable company's account information to the Wii U. DVR and TiVO functionality are plugged in similarly, where users input information via web, and services resultantly pop up on the Wii U. Nintendo TVii launches with the Wii U on November 18 in the US and Canada for free, and remains exclusive to North America for the time being.http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/13/n...tvii-carriers/

"We will continue to sell the Wii," Nintendo America president and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime told investors today in a Q&A followup to the company's big Wii U event in New York City. "In the US, the Wii has sold about 40 million units. We believe that there continues to be an opportunity with the Wii." However, where Fils-Aime sees the most opportunity may not be where you expect. "I'm responsible for Canada, and Latin America as well," he said. "We think there's opportunity in both of those markets, especially Latin America." The Wii is currently offered by Nintendo in North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe, but not Latin America. The Wii ranges from $140 to $250, depending on what it comes with."You can reach price points, you can reach consumers that, candidly, we won't be able to reach with the Wii U. That's gonna continue to be an opportunity," he said. Fils-Aime and Nintendo also have their eyes on Eastern Europe. "On a global base, certainly there are markets in Eastern Europe. There are a number of other markets where if Wii has an attractive price point, it'll do well."He also stood behind the console continuing to sell in its currently available markets alongside the Wii U after the new console launches this November. "We do believe there's still opportunity for the Wii, and we will continue to sell the Wii side-by-side for some period of time." Unsurprisingly, he didn't say exactly how long Nintendo is planning that support, nor would he say if we should expect a price drop for the aging console, but if we had to guess, we'd say "The Wii will drop in price" and "soon."http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/13/nintendo-wii-latin-america-eastern-europe/

THQ's apocalyptic adventures arrive day-and-date with new system
At its Wii U press briefing today, Nintendo today announced dozens of games to arrive during the system's "launch window." However, that window extends through March of 2013, leaving the day-one lineup enveloped in uncertainty.
THQ has since shed a small bit of light on the matter, confirming that Darksiders II is scheduled to arrive in stores alongside Nintendo's new hardware.
Released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC last month, Darksiders II topped the NPD's retail sales chart in its debut with a modest 247,000 copies sold. THQ is billing the Wii U version of the game as containing five hours of extra content, and new features designed to take advantage of the Wii U GamePad.

Activision's next Call of Duty, Black Ops 2, outing is definitely heading to Nintendo's Wii U.
Joystiq has spotted a demo booth for the hotly anticipated shooter, confirming that it will be released for the new console. The revelation came moments before Nintendo began simultaneous worldwide broadcasts revealing launch plans in the US and Europe.
A Wii U SKU of Black Ops 2 has been rumoured before and, unlike Modern Warfare studio Infinity Ward, Black Ops developer Treyarch has often ensured that its own Call of Duty outings come to Nintendo platforms.
No details have been given, such as release date or price, but it's a safe bet that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will be present at Wii U's launch.
Nintendo is due to announce new third-party titles during today's online press conferences, including official confirmation of Black Ops 2.
UPDATE: Black Ops 2 was indeed confirmed for Wii U by none other than Activision's Eric Hirshberg during Nintendo's conference in New York.
The Activision exec confirmed the new Call of Duty will run at 60 frames per second on Wii U – even when playing online, according to VG247.
The game will support the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, the Pro Controller and the Wii U GamePad. The latter will allow a second player to play co-operatively via the tablet screen, rather than splitting the main TV.
Activision will also release Skylanders Giants, 007 Legends, WipeOut 3 and Transformers Prime for Wii U - though oddly these were not on Nintendo UK's release list, which stretches up to March 2013.

Nintendo and Ubisoft have teamed up to create a special ZombiU launch bundle for the UK and Europe.
The SKU was confirmed by Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata during today's Nintendo Direct, during which the platform holder announced it will release its next console on November 30th.
The ZombiU Premium pack will contain a black 32GB model of Wii U, a black Pro Controller and a copy of Ubisoft's hotly anticipated survival horror game ZombiU.
It is not clear if this pack will include NintendoLand like the standard Premium pack, but it's unlikely.
The ZombiU Premium pack will be released in the UK and Europe on November 30th. It was not confirmed for Japan.

Wii U editions of FIFA 13, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Mass Effect 3, Rayman Legends and more will be available on day one when the Nintendo console arrives in November.
The platform holder released a list of first and third-party titles due for both the November 30th release date and 'launch window' - the months following the new console's debut.
FIFA 13, Rayman Legends and Mass Effect 3: Special Edition are amongst the third-party hits due on day one. Each will feature unique Wii U controls and additional features, such as Mass Effect's interactive back story comic to bring Nintendo gamers up to speed with Shepard's adventures.
Also set for launch is Ubisoft's survival horror title ZombiU, which Nintendo announced will also be available in a special bundle with the Premium model of Wii U.
Nintendo's launch titles will be New Super Mario Bros U and NintendoLand. The latter will be included in the console's standard Premium pack.
Nintendo even confirmed some interesting download games that will be live on day one, each with exclusive content: Trine 2 Director's Cut, Nano Assault Neo and Toki Tori 2.
The platform holder also listed several titles as 'launch window' releases. Given that Nintendo of Europe boss Satoru Shibata confirmed Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate will launch in March 2013, it is safe to assume this 'window' covers everything from December to March.
The following games will be released on November 30th:
- FIFA 13 (EA)
- Mass Effect 3: Special Edition (EA)
- New Super Mario Bros U (Nintendo)
- NintendoLand (Nintendo)

Interestingly, Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 does not appear on this list – despite being confirmed by Nintendo of America's simultaneous press conference.
UPDATED: Black Ops 2 has been confirmed as a launch title by a Nintendo UK press release. The list of launch day and launch window titles has also been expanded.

Hot on the heels of MCV revealing the estimated UK prices, several retailers have gone live with their own Wii U price tags.
Both retailers is currently taking pre-orders for all three SKUs: the Basic, the Premium and the special ZombiU pack.
Tesco is asking for £249 for Basic, £329 for the ZombiU bundle and£299 for the Premium model.
This is inline with estimates based on trade prices revealed by high-end retail sources, which we reported on earlier.
Amazon was offering lower prices, but has since bumped them up to £250 for the Basic SKU and £285 for the Premium. Interestingly, it doesn't seem to offering the ZombiU bundle at the time of writing.
Similarly, ShopTo has opted for a Basic price of £247.85, a Premium price of £279.85.
GAME has gone slightly higher at £259.99 (Basic), £309.99 (Premium) and £349.99 (ZombiU). The specialist is asking for a £20 deposit for each.
But it's SimplyGames that currently has the lowest prices, offering the Premium pack for a low £249.99 andthe Basic pack for £209.99.
We'll bring you more prices as they emerge.

Nintendo gave Wii U's western prospects a further shot in the arm this afternoon with the announcement that Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will be released simultaneously for Wii U and 3DS in March.
The news was revealed during this afternoon's Nintendo Direct broadcast, hosted by the company's European president Satoru Shibata. Capcom's Ryozo Tsujimoto appeared on screen to reveal the game and the compatibility between the two versions.
Save files will be transferrable between Wii U and 3DS, and while there is no cross-platform multiplayer, those on Wii U will be able to play with 3DS players who are connected to the same wireless network.
The announcement might have been overshadowed by the surprise revelation of the Wii U exclusive Bayonetta 2, but both show that Nintendo is serious about appealing to core gamers who felt short-changed by Wii's family-friendly focus.
It's been a busy day for Nintendo news, with announcements of release dates in Japan, Europe and the US, the Wii U launch line-up and more besides.

Nintendo has revealed the games that will launch alongside its Wii U console in the UK on November 30.
Presented by European president Satoru Shibata during a Nintendo Direct web broadcast earlier today, the full line-up includes two firstparty games in the form of New Super Mario Bros. U - which will allow players to bring their Miis into Mario's world - and Nintendo Land, the asymmetric multiplayer minigame collection.
Electronic Arts and Ubisoft are also contributing two games each to the initial roster, the former offering up Mass Effect 3 Special Edition and FIFA 13, while the latter delivers Rayman Legends andZombiU.
A further three games will make launch day: Frozenbyte's Trine 2Director's Cut, Shin'en's Nano Assault Neo and Two Tribes' Toki Tori 2.
It's a list made up of many familiar faces, which may be disappointing to those hoping for a little more Nintendo magic - onlyZombiU, New Super Mario Bros. U and Nintendo Land represent completely new titles.
But it's worth keeping in mind that the other games have been reworked with the GamePad controller in mind, and many will be finding a brand new audience in Nintendo's market.
And, of course, what may appear a relatively conservative line-up will stand Nintendo in good stead when it comes to attracting players that have looked to other consoles in the past over Nintendo's more idiosyncratic output.
That launch day line-up in full:
- New Super Mario Bros. U
- Nintendo Land
- Mass Effect 3 Special Edition
- FIFA 13
- Rayman Legends
- ZombiU.
- Trine 2 Director's Cut
- Nano Assault Neo
- Toki Tori 2
And here's the launch window line up (for the period November 30 to March 2013):
- Aliens: Colonial Marines
- Assassin's Creed III
- Batman: Arkham City Armoured Edition
- Darksiders 2
- Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power Of Two
- Game & Wario
- Game Party Champions
- Just Dance 4
- Lego City: Undercover
- Madden NFL 13
- Marvel Avengers Battle Fo Earth
- Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
- NBA 2K13
- Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge
- Rabbids Land
- Rise Of The Guardians: The Video Game
- Runner 2: Future Legend Of Rhythm Alien
- Scribblenauts Unlimited
- Sing Party
- Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
- Sports Connection
- Tank! Tank! Tank!
- Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Wii U Edition
- Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper
- Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2012
