Replacing damaged GamePads is set to cost Wii U owners "a fee," Nintendo revealed today. Last week the company disclosed that Wii U is launching in North America without additional GamePads available at retail, and that damaged GamePads can be replaced via Nintendo's customer service. Today, however, Nintendo told Polygon this replacement service isn't free.
Nintendo didn't disclose any further details, nor did the company elaborate on the future price of additional GamePads when those become available. In Japan, an additional GamePad is retail priced at ¥13,440 ($173). The Wii Ulaunches in North America on November 18, priced at $300 for the 8GB Basic set and $350 for the 32GB Premium set.

But Wii U not as revolutionary as the Wii Remote, admits creative director Peter Shea
Developers and consumers should never underestimate Nintendo despite the mixed reaction the Wii U has received, says the creative director of Firebrand Games.
Speaking to The Guardian, the Glasgow developer’s Peter Shea, whose studio is working on an unannounced title for Wii U, said Nintendo had been written off many times before when it launched systems such as the DS and Wii, which went on to be huge successes for the company.
He also highlighted the fact that Nintendo was one of the best games developers in the world, meaning its exclusives were still a big pull for consumers to buy their consoles.
Shea said too many people in the media had focused on the Wii U’s graphical capabilities rather than its tablet-style gamepad, although he admitted there was still confusion surrounding just how developers could harness the controller.
“There is still a degree of uncertainty about exactly what you can, should and must do with the Wii U, almost as if Nintendo is still working this out for itself, or not quite ready to show all its cards,” said Shea.

Nordic Games today announced the final selection of songs to complete the tracklist for the sensational We Sing 80s due for release on September 28th.
The final 8 songs have now been revealed to complete the full 30 track listing. In celebration of the launch of the 80s sing-a-long game, the “coming soon” trailer has also been released, featuring a host of songs to get you and friends in the 80s party mood. The trailer can be viewed by using this link.
The final batch of songs is:
· Blondie – The Tide is High
· Sabrina – The Boys (Summertime Love)
· Culture Club – Do You Really Want to Hurt Me
· The Bangles – Eternal Flame
· T'Pau – China in Your Hand
· Dexy’s Midnight Runners – Come on Eileen
· Duran Duran – Rio
· Tiffany – I Think We’re Alone Now
The Tide Is High was sung by the ever famous Blondie in 1980, in a reggae/ska style including horns and strings. The chart success of The Tide is High was visible as it soared to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, also reaching number 1 on the UK singles chart. The success of that song could also be remembered by the more recent Atomic Kitten’s number 1 hit.
When Italian singer Sabrina released The Boys (Summertime Love) as her third single it achieved great success as a number 1 single in many countries, including Spain, Switzerland, France and Italy. The Boys (Summertime Love) was so popular that is it was the first single to be released by Sabrina in the UK.
Culture Club had their biggest hit with Do You Really Want To Hurt Me to date as it maintained its number 1 status in the UK singles chart for 3 weeks in October 1982. First released in the US and Canada, lead singer of Culture Club, Boy George provided a smooth voice to go with the Reggae tones of the track.
Eternal Flame was released by The Bangles in 1989. The single was a hit as it reached number 1 in 9 countries, including huge chart success in the UK, US and Australia. The ballad was inspired by two eternal flames, one at the gravesite of Elvis Presley and the other at a local synagogue of which the song writer Billy Steinberg attended as a child.
British band T’Pau sung China in Your Hand and released it as a single in October 1987. The songs meteoric rise to the top of the charts saw China in Your Hand maintain a 5 week stint at number 1. Further single chart success featured the track as number 1 in Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, Norway and Switzerland.
Come On Eileen was a standout 80s song by the Dexy’s Midnight Runners and was a number 1 hit in the UK. A drum beat, bass guitar and piano feature in the song throughout making it a catchy dance tune. Come on Eileen’s lyric itself was loosely inspired by the song A Man Like Me by Jimmy James and the Vagabonds, a British soul group in the 1960s.
Duran Duran released the infamous Rio worldwide on 1 November 1982 from its same named album. Rio was a Top 10 hit in the UK and peaked at number 9. The music video symbolised 1980s glamour and excess along with its synthesized instrumental, which is a key feature of the song.
I Think We’re Alone Now by Tiffany was a re-energised version in 1987 taken from Tommy James & the Shondells original. In the UK Singles chart, I Think We’re Alone Now retained its number 1 status for 3 weeks. It was also the 18th highest selling single in 1987. Number 1 singles chart success featured in countries such as Canada, Ireland, New Zealand Norway and US.

The 3DS version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will not feature online support when it comes out next March in Europe and North America. On the official Capcom Unity forums, a Capcom admin stated there were "no plans for online mode on the 3DS version."Senior vice president of planning and business development Christian Svensson confirmed this and added, "I'd have loved to have seen online as well for 3DS but it twas not to be. Sorry."Svensson also noted that the Wii U version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will be using Nintendo's servers as the third-party KDDI hosted Monster Hunter Tri servers will retire at an unspecified time.Worryingly, Svensson said that he doesn't think save data will transfer from Tri to its special edition on Wii U and 3DS. "I do not believe save transfers from Wii to Wii U or 3DS will be possible that I'm aware of. You get to experience some portion of the original title again. Remember, it's about the journey, not the destination." Uh huh.Elsewhere, Svensson noted that "there won't be a hard bundle" of the the Wii U and 3DS versions of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, but he'd like to create a "soft bundle" purchasing option on Capcom's store, though nothing is official yet.

The new Pokémon Mystery Dungeon coming to 3DS is stepping up the visuals, this Japanese trailer showing off a dramatic improvement from the last entryon DS. Of course that's not surprising given the new hardware, nor is the inclusion of some recent Pokémon. But taking photos of cups, globes, and lamps to open up in-game portals? Yes, that one is still surprising. Apparently anything round does the trick for the 3DS camera – so much for our Pikachu slippers idea.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Magnagate and the Infinite Labyrinth, to give the game its full translated title, comes to Japan later this year. There's no word yet on a Western release.

Pokémon fans have been crying out for a full 3D adventure since the break-out success of the Game Boy originals over a decade ago, yet the main Pokémon adventure series remains top-down 2D.
Producer Junichi Masuda explained why this is in a recent chat with Game Informer, starting with the challenges of retaining its art style."For the Pokémon characters, one of the reasons we use sprites, at least currently, is because we like to have more of a comical kind of look, like an animation. This kind of visual style is what we want to do for the Pokémon games," he said.
"If we were able to take that style we have now and have it translate into 3D with no problems; that is definitely something we would be into."
Someone send this man a copy of Okami.
Masuda also seemed concerned with how Pokemon's accessibility would convert in 3D. "It's not just about the visual appearance either," he went on. "The feeling and the control of the character is also very important to us. There is definitely a certain feeling you have when you control these 2D characters. It may be different if we switched over to 3D."
The latest Pokémon quest, Pokémon Black & White 2, is out in US on October 7, followed by an October 12 launch in EU.

From Twitter talk to mainstream media coverage, Nintendo's big briefing was lost in the shadow of Apple's iPhone 5 unveiling
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
Last week, GamesIndustry International ran an article asking whether Nintendo's Wii U launch announcements would be overshadowed by Apple's long-awaited iPhone 5 unveiling from the day before. As we've since discovered, the answer was an emphatic "Yes!"
But a few letters and some punctuation doesn't quite cover it, so I went looking for some less subjective assessments of how the week's two big tech to-dos turned out. Twitter trend analytics service Hashtags.org helped out on that front with a handy graph showing the use of #iPhone5 and #WiiU tags from Tuesday night through Thursday afternoon.
Hashtags.org data underscores the challenge Nintendo faced in cutting through the buzz over Apple's latest iPhone.
It's not a fair fight by any means. Even at the Wii U hashtag's peak use in the moments after the Nintendo conference concluded, the flashy new console was trailing the Twitter buzz surrounding the IPhone 5. And that was almost a full day after all the details of Apple's new phone had been confirmed in a presentation that wasn't even streamed online.
While it's obvious that Apple and Nintendo's social buzz operate in different orders of magnitude these days, it wasn't always that way. A Google Trends comparison of the search terms "Wii" and "iPhone" (below) shows that as recently as the 2009 holiday season, the two were at least in the same ballpark.
Context-light data aside, a lap around some of the biggest mainstream news sites in the world Thursday afternoon revealed more anecdotal evidence of the Wii U event's difficulty creating a stir.
Several hours after Nintendo wrapped up its event, Time.com's Technland blog had four featured stories at the top of the page, and the Wii U couldn't push news from the Apple event out of any one of them. Nintendo's new console was all-but-invisible on the New York Times site, appearing on neither the technology nor the arts section front pages. The Wall Street Journal at least gave the Wii U news a thumbnail picture and headline in its technology section, but it was posted well into the afternoon and displayed underneath 10 iPhone-related headlines.
Google Trends shows holiday 2009 as the last time Wii search volume was on par with that of the iPhone.
Across the pond, The Guardian's tech section gave the Wii U prominent placement on its front page, but saved the featured art slot for an iPhone follow-up. The Daily Mail science section did the same. And El Mundo carried the Wii U news on its tech section front, but without art, and subordinate to a blog post about how leaks had made the Apple event seem routine.
And then there was the Daily Telegraph, which, like its peers, covered the Wii U, but tossed the news into the virtual back pages, beneath an awe-inspiring all-Apple assault of articles, with separate stories for the device's earphones, analysts' reaction, picture galleries, and an editorial stating that the event yielded "no surprises."
Perhaps the most telling moment of the day's mainstream media trawl came in the way USA Today covered the event. Back in 2005, console gaming was front-page news for the paper. Nintendo even let USA Today spill the beans on the Wii (then called the Revolution) hours before its big Electronic Entertainment Expo briefing that featured the system's unveiling as its finale. Seven years later, Nintendo just doesn't carry the same urgency for the paper. Moments after Nintendo's Wii U event ended, I couldn't find the news anywhere on the USA Today site, not even on its game-specific page. Instead, I found a farewell post from the paper's Game Hunters blog, explaining that the paper and its sites are undergoing a massive redesign, and the game-specific blog "won't be a part of that plan."
As for follow-ups, The Sun today posted a follow-up story on the Wii U, but it's not quite a marketing triumph for Nintendo when the headline screams, "Will you be picking up a Wii U? Here's five reasons not to." Among other things, the article says the system is "dramatically overpriced," will be outdated in a year, and is unnecessary considering Sony's recently announced PlayStation Vita-PS3 cross-functionality.
The top of the Daily Telegraph's tech section front page on Thursday. Not pictured: The Wii U launch date story.
According to freelance journalist Chris Morris (who has covered games for CNN, Forbes, Variety, and more), the problem isn't that big media cares less about traditional gaming; it's that there's less to care about. "Retail sales are down considerably (at least as seen through NPD)," Morris toldGamesIndustry. "The consoles are long in the tooth. And there hasn't been a surprise breakaway blockbuster for some time. Call of Duty is still a huge seller, but those numbers are never a surprise now. Those are the sorts of things that ping the radar of many mainstream outlets."
Compare that to the mobile and social spaces that have attracted headlines in recent years, from Apple's annual iPhone unveilings to the Zynga and Facebook IPOs. While Morris expects that phones and tablets will continue growing in gaming significance, he added that the new generation of traditional consoles (and even big releases along the lines of a new Grand Theft Auto) could make gaming coverage more appealing to mainstream media's gatekeepers.
"Convincing editors to write about the video game industry has always been a dicey affair for as long as I've been doing this for national outlets (over 15 years now)," Morris said. "And since games seem to be largely running on autopilot these days, that makes it even harder. But I think it's cyclical, just like this industry."
As for the Wii U specifically, Morris noted that the original Wii was not an instant phenomenon either, benefiting from inspired PR and marketing work and post-launch supply shortages that made it the hottest holiday gift of the year.
"If the Wii U proves to be as groundbreaking as the Wii, we'll likely see another surge of coverage," Morris said. "But so far, the general reaction from investors and the general public to the system has been a collective shoulder shrug. Many people see it simply as a Wii HD (which underscores the marketing problem Nintendo faces). Also, Nintendo has done virtually nothing to market it, withholding key details until just recently. So there hasn't been anything to write about."

Pre-orders for the Wii U Deluxe edition have apparently reached their allotted numbers across all US Gamestop stores.
A report out of Polygon claims that reservations for the currently definitive Wii U package have been filled ‘company wide’ in America. The basic bundle is likely to follow suit sometime soon as well.
Stores from a variety of states confirmed the news to the outlet, with a few adding they hit 50 per cent of their respective allotments within hours of the release date announcement.
The sources also explained they were unsure if more Deluxe editions would be available either prior to or after the console’s launch in November.
Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter stated last week that he expected Nintendo would initially manufacture no more than “1m units per month to start, so expect 1m U.S., 1m Europe, 1m UK.”
