Steel Diver sequel gets free multiplayer as Rusty's Real Deal Baseball lets players "haggle" over cost of DLC
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
Nintendo is continuing to explore alternative business models, as president Satoru Iwata unveiled its latest experiments with free-to-play functions in the company's latest Nintendo Direct presentation.
Iwata detailed two downloadable 3DS games during the presentation, both of which attempt to monetize players after offering them a core part of the game for free as a trial or demo. First up was Steel Diver: Sub Wars, which was launched on the 3DS eShop immediately following the Nintendo Direct presentation. Described as a "contemplative" first-person shooter that can be enjoyed by those not skilled at fast-paced gameplay, Sub Wars is available as a free trial version with two playable submarines, full access to multiplayer mode, and the introductory portion of the single-player mode. Players who then buy the full game will receive access to a larger array of submarines and the rest of the single-player campaign.
In April, Nintendo will also release Rusty's Real Deal Baseball on the 3DS eShop. A collection of minigames inspired by the great American pastime, Real Deal Baseball will give players a free demo, along with the option of purchasing additional minigame modes for $4 each. However, Nintendo is introducing a new wrinkle to the business model by allowing players to "haggle" with in-game mascot Rusty over the price of these downloadable add-ons. Players can bring the asking price down either by giving Rusty in-game items, or by "listening to his problems [to] improve his mood."
Nintendo has tried out a handful of free-to-play approaches in the past, most notably with Wii Sports Club and Wii Fit U. In Wii Sports Club, players can download the minigames as 24-hour timed trials, after which they can play all the sports for $2 a day or purchase unlimited access to portions of the game on a $10 per sport basis. As for Wii Fit U, Nintendo offered a month-long trial of the downloadable version of the game for free until the end of January, with full access unlocked for those who purchased a $20 Fit Meter as well.

Nintendo tonight made a number of 3DS announcements - including news it is developing a football management title.
Entitled Nintendo Pocket Football Club, the game lets 3DS owners build their own football team and train up the team using cards. Think of a stripped down, cutesy Football Manager. It is an eShop only game and arrives on April 17th.
Nintendo also revealed that the delay Mario Golf: World Tour is scheduled to hit stores on May 2nd, while Kirby: Triple Deluxe is scheduled for a May 16th launch.
Both follow Yoshi's New Island, which has already been confirmed for a March 14th date, and Nintendo has confirmed the game will launch alongside a special edition version of 3DS XL.
Other dates included new that Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl will launch on May 2nd, while Japan-conquering Monster Hunter 4 won't be arriving in Europe until 2015.
There was a slew of a digital announcements, too. Alongside Nintendo Pocket Football Club, Pokemon Link: Battle! – the latest game in the puzzle series – is coming to eShop on March 13th, while a sequel to Steel Diver - named Sub Wars – was also revealed, although not dated.
Meanwhile, fans of Level 5's Guild01 series will be delighted to hear the much requested Weapon Shop de Omasse is coming to Europe on February 20th. To celebrate, all other titles in the series of small, quirky indie games have been reduced on the eShop to just £2.69 for a limited period.

Having already conquered Steam, the PlayStation 3 and Vita, Stick It To The Manwill next bring its pink-limbed telekinesis to Nintendo's Wii U.
Developed by Swedish indie studio Zoink!, Stick It To The Man is a puzzle-platformer starring Ray, an unassuming fellow who somehow finds himself with a giant pink arm jutting out of his brain. Thanks to video game logic, Ray can use this inexplicable limb to manipulate the world around him and read other people's thoughts – a helpful attribute given that Ray is framed for a crime by "The Man" and must use his powers to avoid paying for a crime he didn't commit.
Unique to the Wii U incarnation of Stick It To The Man are Gamepad controls. Though we lack an exact description of how this new element functions, Zoink! describes it as an "innovative way of using the GamePad to mindread characters in the game, further separating the mindreading world from Ray's world."
So far no price point has been established for the Wii U version of Stick It To The Man, though with the Steam version at $15 and the PlayStation iterations at $13, it seems likely that the Wii U game will be somewhere in that area.

During its UK Nintendo Direct presentation yesterday, Nintendo revealed a Yoshi 3DS XL system – just the hardware, no Yoshi game included – heading to Europe on March 14, Tiny Cartridge points out.
Earlier this month, we caught wind of a Yoshi's New Island 3DS XL bundlerumored to launch on March 14, but a hardware-software collection hasn't been announced just yet. There's no word on a North American launch for the Yoshi system.
Ace Attorney creator Shu Takumi confirmed that he is working on a new entry in the series that will shift those games in a new direction. Japan gets aMonster Hunter 4 3DS XL on March 27, this one based on the dual-horned, hairy beast Rajang. That system was announced during Nintendo's Japanese stream of Nintendo Direct.
This whole "three streams for three different regions all at the same time" process is making it tough to keep track of everything, at least if you're a disembodied, global internet person-simulation like us.

Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl, the latest entry in Nippon Ichi Software's cult-favorite dungeon crawling series, will finally reach European shores on May 2.
Like all Etrian Odyssey games, Untold sees players navigating a series of labyrinthine structures from a first-person perspective while battling fiends in turn-based fashion. Mechanically it's a very classic, arguably dated take on the roleplaying genre, but these archaic elements are countered by modern aesthetics, sound and the convenience of being able to map your surroundings directly on the 3DS touchscreen. Danny's review of the North American release awarded the game 4 of 5 stars, alternately describing Etrian Odyssey Untold as "an enjoyable nostalgia trip for Etrian Odyssey veterans" and "the best entry point in the series."
Publisher NIS America Europe has yet to reveal a price point for the European release of Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl.

Since making Mutant Mudds Deluxe, an improved version of platformer Mutant Mudds, available on Wii U, Steam and PSN last year, developer Renegade Kid has seen the best sales on Nintendo's console - even better than PSN and Steam combined.
Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham revealed the news on Twitter earlier this week. Watsham added in a follow-up tweet that 3DS has undoubtedly been the most popular platform for Mutant Mudds Deluxe, which was unlocked as a free content download on 3DS in the original Mutant Mudds game.
The varying length of availability on each platform is worth noting when comparing sales. Mutant Mudds Deluxe arrived first on 3DS in early 2012, followed by ports to PC and iOS later in the year. A Steam version was made available last November, then the PS3 and PS Vita versions launched in December. Watsham didn't say where iOS fits into all of this.
Renegade Kid is currently working on a few different games for 3DS, including atmospheric first-person shooter Moon Chronicles, loot-focused platformerTreasurenauts and horror FPS Cult County. Renegade Kid has also promised a sequel to Mutant Mudds, but development is currently on hold until work onTreasurenauts has been completed.

Squids Odyssey has slingshotted past its 2013 fall release date on the 3DS and Wii U eShop and is readjusting itself to target this spring. Odyssey is a turn-based, tactical RPG that lets players fight battles by flinging ocean life into their foes. Antagonists have been mutated by an ooze-like pollutant, but they don't seem keen on using their powers for good like our half-shelled friends.
Odyssey is a compilation of existing entries Squids and Squids Wild West, but it adds a new campaign, a new Squid hero and reworked controls for the Wii U and 3DS. Players can assemble teams from 15 Squids across four classes to take on Odyssey's 90+ missions. There are also more than 65 stat-boosting helmets to strap onto Squids, in case you were worried about safety gear for your arsenal of sea-creature bullets.

Nintendo announced a 3DS mini-game collection by the name of Rusty's Real Deal Baseball during today's Nintendo Direct livestream. The game is free to download, and offers one demo game by default. The rest are cartridges that players purchase for their "Nontendo 4DS," a small console inside the game that houses all the baseball mini-games.
The catch to Rusty's Real Deal Baseball is the haggling system within the game, in which players attempt to talk the mini-game store's owner (Rusty, who happens to be a dog) into lowering the real-life prices of the mini-games. This is accomplished not only by chatting Rusty up at the right times, but by bribing him with items earned within the games players already own until the shopkeeper (or one of his kids) announces the minimum price has been met. Completing rounds in mini-games also earns players collectible stamps, which unlock items for use in bargaining.
Nintendo first released the game as Darumeshi Sports Store in Japan in August 2013.

Weapon Shop de Omasse, the final title in Level-5's Guild 01 series, will reach the 3DS North American eShop on February 20, Nintendo announced today.Omasse's comical, light-hearted plot is the result of a collaboration between Level-5 and comedian Yoshiyuki Hirai. In Omasse, Oyaji and his apprentice Yuuhan manage an item shop that equips heroes with the weapons they need to take on valiant quests.
Players forge weapons by hammering weapons on the 3DS' lower screen. Players tap out rhythms immediately after hearing them, achieving a higher level of craftsmanship according to their accuracy.
A content rating for Omasse from the Australian Classification Board popped up earlier this year.

The news was confirmed in the Super Smash Bros Miiverse community, where Sakurai regularly posts screenshots from the upcoming Wii U and 3DS title.
"The Home-Run Bat in this game is black," Sakurai said in his latest post, highlighting the bat's new design, "and it's so powerful that your eyes might bug out!"
The bat is considered by Smash Bros tournament players to be one of the most powerful weapons in the game. Though most Smash Bros weapons can only be swung normally, the bat can also be swung as a forward smash attack (a more powerful attack).
When swung like this the bat causes massive knock-back if it connects, leading to a likely knock-out in most circumstances.
It can also be thrown, doing 20% damage if it hits, making it effective from long range too.
Although series lead Sakurai is heading up the latest Smash Bros. project, Namco Bandai is handling development duties with a team including producer Masaya Kobayashi (Ridge Racer) and director Yoshito Higuchi (SoulCalibur).
"All the top creators from Namco Bandai are gathered here to create a never-before-seen dream team for this project," Kobayashi said when the partnership was announced in June 2012.
Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS have not yet been given release dates, though they are expected to launch in 2014.

Marvelous AQL's next project is a Nintendo 3DS simulation-RPG developed by veteran Rune Factory series staff, Japanese publication Famitsu announcedtoday.
Kinki no Maguna (Forbidden Magna) was previously teased in a countdown siteculminating in today's Famitsu reveal. Few specifics regarding the project have been announced, though more details will be revealed when the official site opens on February 17.
The announcement follows up on the recent closure of Rune Factory series developer Neverland. The studio filed for bankruptcy late last year, citing "changes in the business environment" for its financial troubles.
