There's been a surprising amount of chatter recently about some sort of "Christmas surprise" coming out of Nintendo on Monday, Dec. 25. The source of all this speculation, as far as we can figure it, is a Nov. 30 post on RumorReporter.com that coyly suggests "you might want to keep an eye on your Wii's WiiConnect24 service leading up to this Christmas. Nintendo's sending a nifty gift... a surprise."
The only cited source for this information? "A friend of mine from Germany, who works for a very legitimate gaming production and publication." And really, if you can't trust some guy's unnamed German friend who works for an unnamed "legitimate" gaming company, who can you trust?
The extreme sketchiness of this tip hasn't stopped the 'net from rampant speculation on what the big surprise might be. The current leading contender seems to be free Virtual Console games. As GamersReports notes, a little Firefox hacking can turn up Wii Shop pages for upcoming games Super Mario Bros., ToeJam & Earl and R-Type that list the price as "0 points / Free." The report is careful to note this as a rumor, but still holds out hope for "a real Christmas miracle, though."
We don't buy it. As noted on the original hacking guide on Following Revolution, "any unreleased game says free for now, as it's just a placeholder for price" which will be set later. Some might say that the "free" message where the "download" button usually appears proves that the games are indeed going to be offered gratis, but it would be a relatively simple process for Nintendo to set that message as the default for any page with an unset price. At best, this proves that the virtual console has the functionality to offer products for free -- something we've long known was planned for the system's Opera browser.
But the greatest argument against this Christmas surprise is that it's bad business. Giving away Super Mario Bros., a title that is likely to be one of the Virtual Console's biggest sellers, is not a smart move for a company that obviously values profits. The positive PR for the move likely wouldn't offset the hundreds of thousands of dollars lost to the free downloads.
We suppose we could be wrong here, and that some huge surprise could show up on our systems come Christmas morning. Just don't get your hopes up, is all.

Sony may be trailing Nintendo in the handheld sector, but there is one area were Sony clearly dominates—fancy, expensive cases within which to carry your portable of choice. From Emilio Pucci to Porter to Yoshida to Puma, the number of options a fashion conscious PSP owner has is remarkable.
Now, Nintendo is getting into the game, partnering with United Arrows to release a series of pricey DS Lite cases from Briefing, Whitehouse Cox, and United Arrows sub-brand Beauty & Youth. These handsome leather and suede cases range from 8400 yen ($71 USD) to 16800 yen ($142 USD) and are worth every single penny. Or yen. Label whore that I am, I'll humbly request a review sample of each.

The pictures, videos and articles of lines and shortages surrounding Wii restocks in North America makes for compelling viewing. Unfortunately, it also looks like it's leading to some stupid behaviour, with some Australians assuming the shortages in the US translate into shortages globally. Hint: if you read it on CNN, it's probably not local.
Sensing a scam, Australians are snapping up Wiis and selling them off on eBay to crazed, desperate shoppers, often for double the retail price. Only problem is the Wii is available in stores here so long as you a bit of searching, especially at some of the big department stores, and "there are continuous shipments going out from here on", according to Nintendo Australia.
Take a deep breath. There's plenty for everyone

Nice contest from Games radar
Ever felt like being a racing driver; an off-road speed demon or a GT ace? Well, now's your chance to experience the thrill of the racetrack - we've teamed up with Ubisoft to offer one lucky winner a copy of Monster 4x4 World Circuit and GT Pro Series, along with copies of Rayman Raving Rabbids and Open Season. And as if that wasn't enough, the prize includes a brand new Wii console to play them on, too. Yowsers!
Of course, you'll also get the groovy plastic steering wheel that comes with GT Pro Series so that you can slot in your Wii-mote and make an instant wireless steering wheel to cane the tracks with on Wii racing games. It's a whole bundle of fun and you could win it. The prize will be sent out in around February or March 2007 so there's still plenty of time to practise your air steering technique with your hands or a plate.
So what do you have to do to be in with a chance of winning this insanely cool console bundle? Just email us your answer to the following question:
What is the full name of Ubisoft's new Monster Truck racing game for Wii?
a) Big cars going fast
b) Monster 4x4 World Circuit
c) Monster Mash
If you think you know the answer, click here to email us with your answer, name and full address. The closing date for entries is Wednesday 17 January 2007.

December 20th, 2006, 18:50 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has promised that the Wii will not suffer from a lack of software titles as other Nintendo consoles have done in the past.
Speaking to Newsweek, Fils-Aime highlighted three games - Zelda: Twilight Princess ("arguably the best game we've ever made"), Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy - as examples of key titles for the Wii.
He said that Metroid was down for a release "early in 2007", while Mario Galaxy will be "strategically" timed "to make sure that we continue driving momentum through 2007".
"How do I answer the question, "Will there be no drought," and "How will we make sure that there are fantastic titles for Wii?" The answer is Zelda, Metroid and Mario. Which is a pretty darn good lineup," Fils-Aime concluded.
When then asked if he'd repeat George Bush's infamous "read my lips" pledge to deliver games at a steady pace, the NoA president added, "I thought I just did."
Speaking to MTV News recently, Fils-Aime said that Metroid Prime 3: Corruption would be the next big first party title after WarioWare: Smooth Moves (January) and Mario Party 8 (March), while Mario Galaxy would arrive sometime between March and Christmas 2007.

Two former Nintendo of America executives are set to be recognised for their contributions to videogaming by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences.
Minoru Arakawa, who was president of NoA, and former chairman Howard Lincoln will be presented with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the DICE Summit, which takes place in Las Vegas on February 8.
Arakawa was responsible for establishing Nintendo of America in 1980, and remained with the company until 2002. Lincoln's career in gaming began in 1981 when he was hired as a legal advisor for Nintendo, and he also continued to work for the platform holder throughout the following decades.
The awards will be handed over by EA boss Larry Probst, who commented, "Both are pioneers whose contribution to Nintendo and to the game industry has had a profound impact on interactive entertainment. These men personify the industry's highest ideals for integrity, creativity and innovation."
AIAS president Joseph Olin added, "The impact of the work done by Minoru Arakawa and Howard Lincoln can still be felt today. The creation of the licensed publishing model, quality approval for third party games and peripherals, and the fostering of innovative sales and marketing programs, played a significant part of Nintendo's success then, and are at the foundation of the consumer interactive entertainment business."

Nintendo has labelled a lawsuit which alleges the company to be engaging in "unfair or deceptive practices" as "completely without merit."
The suit claims the wrist strap for the controller of the recently released Wii console is ineffective for its intended use and Nintendo has breached the warranty of the device.
Filed on December 6th, the suit is seeking to become a class-action, with anyone who has suffered similar problems able to join.
Nintendo has offered an official rebuttal to the lawsuit, stating: "We believe the lawsuit to be completely without merit."
"Nintendo has a long tradition of delivering high-quality products and excellent customer service, and we take all reports from our customers seriously."
"At the time we became aware of the lawsuit, we had already taken appropriate steps to reinforce with consumers the proper use of the Wii Remote and had made stronger replacement wrist straps available. This suit has had no effect on those efforts," said the company.
Shortly after the console was released, Nintendo said that it would investigate clams that the Wii strap was prone to breaking, and last week the company offered to replace the item while insisting the peripheral had passed relevant safety tests.
However, the lawsuit, which was filed in Austin, Texas, seeks a refund or replacement strap, reimbursement of legal fees and "other and further relief as the Court deems just and proper."
"The controller is an essential component of any video game console, and so plaintiff is unable to use the Nintendo Wii for its intended purposes as a result of the broken wrist band. Accordingly, it renders the Wii console, which retails in the United States for $250, useless," details the lawsuit.

EA's Tokyo development studio is working on a DS version of Theme Park, the publisher has confirmed.
The latest incarnation of the popular fairground simulation will, as ever, allow you to create your dream-park and fill it with stomach-churning rides, tacky shops, and 'Butlins' sideshows. It's a familiar description of an old franchise, but EA believes the DS can bring a new, intuitive approach to the series via the touch-screen interface.
"Theme Park is one of EA's long standing properties, and we are excited to breathe new life into the series by bringing it to the NDS platform for the first time ever," said Stan Chow, general manager of EA Japan. "Taking advantage of the unique controls in the NDS, we are able to create an easy-to-pick-up game that will have the depth to satisfy fans of the series, and also be accessible to lighter and new gamers with its user-friendly controls."
The game is due for release in spring 2007.

While the console launch frenzy has given us some exciting innards to look at lately, it's good to see someone finally take a big step away from that potentially hazardous (and sued) Wiimote, pick up a screwdriver, and delve right in. Similar to the precise movements that splayed the Wii itself, these folks used utmost caution (and a fairly nice digicam, too) when dissecting their brand new Wiimote. Beneath the casing was the IR sensor, capacitors, a Broadcom BCM2042 Bluetooth chip, vibration motor, LEDs, accelerometer, EEPROM, and a myriad of other random forms of circuitry. Interestingly enough, the kids behind the scenes got a little carried away and found that the "EEPROM contained all the constants like Bluetooth ID, firmware revision, etc.," while the Wiimote "functionality was burned into the Broadcom" chip itself. So if cramming a SIXAXIS controller into a model airplane is too amateur for you, crack open that Wiimote (before it does the same to you) and get to hacking.

Nintendo will allow US Wii owners to download Super Mario Bros. (NES), Toe Jam & Earl (Megadrive) and R-Type (Turbografx) for free on Christmas Day as part of a festive gift to its customers, according to internet rumours.
This would be an amazing promotional gift for Nintendo fans in the US, but we're sceptical of the chances. Nintendo hasn't announced anything about it and no notifications have come through to our US Wii's here at CVG; what would be the point of not promoting such a fantastic give-away?
Despite our scepticism, CVG has contacted Nintendo and is currently awaiting feedback. Check back for the official line in a short while.

Any new console launch is bound to be covered by publications that don't usually touch games, it's a sign that games are becoming bigger. And it's even better for the national press if anything goes slightly wrong, like the non-issue with the wrist strap. We haven't even nearly snapped any of ours.
A story in free rag London Lite on December 19 reports that Nintendo will introduce a range of health-orientated games, such as workouts. For a start Nintendo hasn't announced anything of the sort, though it surely could at any moment.
But the best bit is the paper's description of how you play Wii. It says "The computers, which already have games such as boxing and tennis, are controlled by controlling a wireless box in mid-air."
Computers? Wireless box? Mid-air? Our mum's could write a better description than that. Must have been a slow news day or the editor needed to fill a page with shoddy reporting like this, games magazine and websites will always be around.

Nintendo fans looking forward to their next big Wii game or their next Zelda fix are just going to have to hold tight a little longer than they may have anticipated. According to CVG and their "sources close to Nintendo" we shouldn't expect to see either Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption or The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass until at the earliest third quarter of 2007.
While titles like Wario Ware Smooth Moves, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and (hopefully) Fire Emblem will help fill the void, the wait for what will surely be top-tier 40+ hour adventures now seems heartbreaking.
Nintendo spokesfolk would not confirm a late shipping window to the CVG crew, but did commit to a calendar year 2007 release date for all three. The odds of one of those marquee games slipping into '08 wouldn't surprise me one bit, though.

From the House of Mouse today comes an announcement about two brand new Wii games based on big budget movie franchises.
Disney is set to release video game tie-ins to next summers sure-to-be-blockbuster flicks Pirates of The Carribean 3: At World's End and Meet The Robinsons, the latest CG animated film from the company. Details are extremely scant at this very early stage, but both titles are due out in the first half of next year.

news via maysville
Around 9 p.m. the night before the popular Nintendo Wii was to go on sale at Wal-Mart, Victor Hamm of Aberdeen arrived at the Maysville location to wait for the release.
In the lawn and garden portion of the store, Hamm said, were nine chairs -- the same number of game systems which were to go on sale the next day. The first nine people in those chairs would be the lucky recipients of the Wii.
"They did it fair and square," said Hamm about the way Wal-Mart handled the demand for the game. "There was a lot of people upset with them, coming in and cussing them."
Hamm said those in the chairs were given tickets, which they could then trade in to purchase the system.
Hamm purchased the system for his two sons, despite their requests that he not spend his night at the store. Still, Hamm said his sons were "pretty thrilled about it" once he actually had the system.
"It does everything," he said about the Wii. "It's pretty neat."
Hamm said he paid $250 for the system, but as soon as he walked out of the store, someone made him an offer to purchase the console.
"It's one of the hottest things, that and the PlayStation 3," he said. "As soon as I walked out of Wal-Mart I had someone offer me $400 for it."
Still, Hamm did not sell, adding that he did not spend the night in Wal-Mart only to sell the item he waited for so long.
The Nintendo Wii is simply one of the items high on the demand list for Christmas shoppers. Electronics in general seem to be popular, with the PlayStation 3 as popular, if not more so, than the Wii.
"As soon as we get any of those, they're sold out," said Daniel Forsythe, an associate in the electronics department at Wal-Mart, regarding the Wii and PS3.
The first time the PS3 was available, Forsythe said people waited two full days for the system. They waited overnight for the Wii.
A similar demand was seen at Kmart. However, according to Nancy Frodge, the electronics manager at Kmart, the Nintendo DS, a handheld game, has joined the ranks of the Wii and PS3, in demand, but not available.
"Availability is just limited," she said.
Looking for the items online is nearly as frustrating, with many of the Wii systems for sale on eBay for $400, or more, and the PS3 ranging around $800.
Also popular this year are televisions, DVDs such as "Over the Hedge," CDs, MP3 players, and other items.
Aside from electronics, hot items in the toy department include TMX Elmo, Baby Alive dolls, Disney "Cars" characters and Fur Real pets.
"That stuff we just can't keep in," said Daniel Sammons, who works in the toy department.
Sammons said the store not only gets requests from customers in-store, but also receives calls about the items daily.
One item the local Wal-Mart never received, but was requested, was a $300 Fur Real pet pony called Butterscotch.
"We just couldn't get it," he said.
At Kmart, Frodge said popular items also included Dora the Explorer items and the Fly Pen, which assists students as they work on homework.
Out shopping Tuesday afternoon was Beverly Appleman who was nearly finished with her Christmas shopping.
"I haven't wanted anything that has not been available," she said.
On her Christmas shopping list were items ranging from Barbies, tractors, wagons and "Cars" items to "practical things like socks or sweatshirts." Appleman said she was shopping for an age range of 7 to 75 years old.
Rebecca Sweeney of May's Lick was also out Tuesday, purchasing a Josh Groban CD for her mother. She was also shopping for items such as UK apparel for her brother, a senior who plans to begin school at UK next year, and tools for her father. Sweeney said her brother would also like video games, as he was one of the lucky people to manage to purchase a Wii.
