If you know your Rare history, you probably know that Conker's Bad Fur Daybegan life as a tame, kid-friendly game and evolved into the foul-mouthed 'mature' title that reached your Nintendo 64. Have you wondered what that original squirrel adventure looked like in action, however? Rare is happy to help. It just posted unreleased footage of the game when it was still known asTwelve Tales: Conker 64. To say that this early version was playing it safe would be an understatement. As you'll see below, Conker's companion Berry (aka Berri) wasn't nearly so sexualized. Meanwhile, the gameplay mechanics involved innocuous things like unicycles and differently-themed hats -- no feces monsters here.

Six games are to receive a discounted re-release on 3DS.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Star Fox 64 3D, Nintendogs + Cats, Mario Tennis Open, Yoshi’s New Island and Mario Party: Island Tour are the six games that will kick off the offer when they roll out on October 16th.
Nintendo said that between them these titles have sold 3.8m units across Europe.
What Nintendo hasn’t specified is how much these Selects titles will be sold for.
Nintendo previously released a discounted 20-title strong Selects range for Wii. There have not yet been any Wii U specific Selects releases.

Owners of older versions of Nintendo’s 3DS won’t be able to play one of its upcoming titles in 3D.
Perfectly Nintendo reports that Hyrule Warriors Legends’ developers faced a bit of a challenge porting the Wii U game onto the handheld hardware, primarily due to the high number of enemies on-screen. To solve this problem it has disabled stereoscopic 3D on all hardware bar the new 3DS and New 3DS XL.
This helps because to display in 3D the console has to output two separate images to the top screen, as well as a third image to the bottom screen. Newer hardware is able to handle this thanks to its beefed up innards.
This isn’t the first time Nintendo has segregated owners of its older and newer hardware. RPG outing Xenoblade Chronicles is only compatible the 3DS’ modern variants.
In the interview producer Yosuke Hayashi added that he hopes to make Hyrule Warriors Legends Amiibo compatible and that all of the DLC characters found in the Wii U game will make the trip to 3DS, although owners will not be able to transfer them between the two games.

Nintendo has patented a new controller design that features scroll wheels on its top two shoulders.
The patent document appeared online yesterday after originally being filed back in February of this year (thanks, NeoGAF).
Nintendo's documentation shows designs for a touchscreen controller similar to that of the Wii U, although with only two face buttons instead of four.
Each shoulder also sports a scrollable button to be used with the index finger of each hand, or with the thumb of one hand when the controller is held in portrait like a book.
The wheels could be used for scrolling through an inventory of items, for example, or zooming in and out of an environment.
Nintendo is likely now deep into the design stage of its upcoming Wii U successor, currently code-named NX, although whether this innovation makes it into the final product remains to be seen.
Last month it was revealed that the company had patented designs for a games console that lacked a disc drive. Its controller also had a display on it.
Nintendo will discuss NX in more detail next year, the company's late president Satoru Iwata said.

The Boston Globe reports (based on Kotaku's story earlier this month) that Nintendo is cracking down on YouTube videos which show speedruns of its games -- computer-guided play that skips completely human hands pressing buttons on a controller. Why? The article notes that these play-throughs"require the use of ROMs, digital backup files of the original game that can be freely passed from computer to computer, or downloaded from well-known websites. Therefore, Nintendo reasons — and YouTube is clearly sympathetic to this reasoning — there are copyright issues at play, since players aren’t using the (ancient) original game cartridges, or newer copies sold directly online by Nintendo."Legally justifiable or not, this seems unlikely to build goodwill with some of Nintendo's most nostalgic fans.

Mario may have cut his teeth hopping barrels as "Jumpman" in Donkey Kongback in 1981, but his true claim to fame came with Super Mario Bros. Created by acclaimed video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, that game launched in September 1985, landing on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)/Famicom consoles. This year, the highly influential Mario series celebrates its 30th birthday, having entertained generations of arcade and console fans throughout several iterations over three decades. The impact of Nintendo's iconic Mario and his player-two bro Luigi on pop culture has gone far beyond just gaming itself; they've appeared in cartoons, movies, comics and even art. To join in celebrating 30 years of Super Mario Bros., we've put together a photo album of all things Mario over the years.

Nintendo has announced its fan-pleasing Nintendo Direct announcement shows will resume.
The company has not released a Nintendo Direct following the passing of company president Satoru Iwata in July. The broadcasts were typically presented at least in part by him.
Now, Nintendo has said the shows will continue at some point - although there is currently no schedule for when this will be.
"Nintendo Directs will continue," a company spokesperson told IGN, "but we have no details to provide now on who will be featured or the topics that will be covered."
The last Nintendo Direct broadcast took place in May, before the company's E3 Digital Event in June.
This week Nintendo named a new company president: Tatsumi Kimishima, a long-time top-ranking exec and former Nintendo of America leader.
Nintendo uses its Direct shows to speak directly to its fans, informing them of release dates and announcements for upcoming Wii U, 3DS and Amiibo launches.
Over this summer, Nintendo chose to release information simply over its social media channels instead.
But perhaps we'll be hearing more about the busy end of year season in a Nintendo Direct sooner rather than later - and maybe even something on Pikmin 4?

The new president of Nintendo expected the Wii U to fail – that’s one of many claims to be made in the Japanese press in the aftermath of the appointment of Nintendo’s new president.
Former Nintendo of America boss Tatsumi Kimishima was yesterday named as the successor to late boss Satoru Iwata. However, the change in leadership won’t bring about a change of strategy, it seems.
“The Nikkei quotes new Nintendo boss Kimishima as saying there won’t be changes in the basic strategy set up by former president Iwata,” Japanese business analyst Serkan Totosaid. “Kimishima says the challenge is now to identify new projects [and] cultivate the right human resources to reach Nintendo-like profits again.
“The Nikkei also quotes Nintendo’s Genyo Takeda as saying the aim is to establish a future-proof group leadership system inside Nintendo.”
It is also claimed that Kimishima doesn’t expect his appointment to be a long-term one.
“Kimishima says Iwata didn’t give him instructions how to run the company,” Toto added. “He says he is elected for one year and doesn’t know what will come next [and] he is not against company outsiders to lead Nintendo one day.
“Kimishima also confirms that Nintendo’s smartphone and IP-related plans won’t change [and] the task is now to develop new businesses.”
Nikkei’s article also addressed the concerns that a perceived ‘numbers man’ has been put in charge of a creative company.
“Kimishima predicted Wii U’s failure when it was introduced by warning it’s too similar to the original Wii,” Tot went on. “Despite his business background, he is quoted as saying it’s wrong to lead a gaming company on numbers alone.
“The Nikkei claims Kimishima wasn’t Iwata’s favourite choice. Nintendo was first looking for somebody younger but didn’t have the personnel. The article also suggests the [appointment] was a rushed decision because the holiday season, where Nintendo makes 50 per cent plus of sales, is near.”

Something happened when we were broadcasting the Wii U's Super Mario Maker on Playdate last week. Sean Buckley and myself (and almost assuredly someone from Twitch chat) thought it'd be a great idea to play through levels that the community made, live on the internet. And guess what? That's absolutely what we want to do, but we'll need your help. For a future stream we'd love to do nothing but play custom levels created exclusively by our loyalPlaydate viewers. All you need to do is take the ID code for your masterpiece and drop it in an email to EngadgetPlaydate@gmail.com. It's easy! We're playing pretty loose with the rules too. You can send us a couple of your favorites (but fewer than 30) if you're having a tough time narrowing it down to just one, and all that we ask if you not have anything lewd contained therein.

September 14th, 2015, 21:23 Posted By: wraggster
here’s been a fan rumour doing the rounds for several years that claimed the events depicted in NES title Super Mario Bros 3 took place on a theatre stage.
The reason? There are a handful of visual markers pointing to such a fact. The game opens, for instance, with the raising of a red curtain, and some of the assets on the title screen have a shadow, as if they were hung in front of the background.
The theme continues in the game, too, where blocks are not only shadowed but also appear to be screwed into the level itself. Platforms, meanwhile, are suspended by ropes from above.
In addition, levels end by passing into a black area, almost as if Mario were exiting the stage.

After Satoru Iwata's passing, Nintendo has announced its new company president today -- and no, it's not the legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Instead, the console maker has promoted Tatsumi Kimishima (above left), a name that's probably unfamiliar to most of the gaming populace. Until now he's been a managing director at Nintendo, overseeing the human resources division. Not the most exciting role, but since he joined the company in 2000 Kimishima has also been chief financial officer for the Pokémon Company, president of Pokémon USA, and president of Nintendo of America.

Nintendo is going all-out to support, Super Mario Maker, which launches tomorrow (September 11th).
The platform holder is planning a huge promotion for the game spanning into 2016.
“I’d say our marketing push is on the same kind of level as [Mario Kart 8],” Nintendo UK product manager Remy van Leeuwen told MCV.
“It’s really one of our big titles this year and it’s definitely in parity with Splatoon this year.
“Super Mario Maker is the next evolution in 2D Mario games. It’s not only here to shake up that formula, but also provide content that will delight the community.”

Club Nintendo, the rewards scheme that let people buy games and other items with stars earned by registering Nintendo products, is selling its last item: a Goodbye Coin.
Tempted to cash in?
2000 stars gets you the coin, described as a "commemorative thank you" by Nintendo.
The silver-plated coin is stamped with the waving Super Mario Bros., as well as "thank you" in Japanese on one side. The Club Nintendo logo is on the other side.
Nintendo announced its plan to close Club Nintendo back in January 2015. The rewards system, formerly known as Nintendo VIP 24:7, began life in 2002 alongside the launch of the GameCube. A new loyalty program is in the works, Nintendo has said.

In a bizarre turn of events, police have taken two men into custody for threatening the Pokémon World Championships in Boston. Investigators from the Boston Police Department (BPD) were tipped off after James Stumbo and Kevin North, 27 and 18 respectively, posted an image of an AR-15 and shotgun on Facebook, saying "(we) are ready for worlds Boston here we come!!!." Police searched their car yesterday and discovered the two weapons, along with hundreds of rounds of ammunition and a hunting knife. What makes it bizarre is that both players had actually qualified for the World Championships -- no easy feat -- and Stumbo was even the Nebraska state Pokémon champion.
